Character's Thoughts or mindtalk somethin
"Who are you?" Kuroko asked wih a tilt of his head, eyeing the redhead curiously. The tight hold on his hands slackened and his eyes were suspicious, no clue of recognition in his eyes. Akashi was completely forgotten at the time Kuroko woke up.
"I..." Akashi tried to speak, but his mind at this situation formed no coherent words. The look on his face was filled with happiness at the sudden news of Kuroko's sight, but the sudden realization of not remembering the redhead, devastated him.
Kenji seemed to look at Kuroko in a confused manner, the nurses and Dr. Shintarou too. The silence was unbearable for Akashi, the atmosphere making him a little nauseous. His whole being is feeling weird, it hurts him. Especially his heart, that sounded like it stopped beating.
"Kuroko-san, are you clearly positive that you have no memories whatsoever from Akashi-san? Nothing at all?" Dr. Shintarou finally spoke up, his shocked demeanor changed to a rather presumptuous one. Kuroko shook his head, feeling quite sad. "I apologize. I'm assumptive, I have no memories of Akashi-san."
The nurses gave Akashi a grievous look, including Dr. Shintarou. The bespectacled doctor shook his head sadly, "I see. Akashi-san, is that... alright with you?"
Akashi didn't answer, his eyes were glued to the floor. The silence was unbearable for him once again, plus the fact that everyone is staring at him. The redhead nodded silently, approving of his state. His gaze still didn't waver from the ground.
"I'm sorry Akashi-san. I really am..." Kuroko looks concerned and worried. He probably figured that both of them had a very good relationship, best friends he thought. The light bluenette grabbed Akashi's hand and gripped it. Akashi's heart hurted once he was called 'Akashi-san', since he was used to 'Akashi-kun' from his lover.
Dr. Shintarou tapped the pen in his clipboard and waved, "I'll leave you alone for now. I'm giving you time to adjust your ability to see. Until next time Kuroko-san." The nurses fumbled their way out, wanting to get out of this awkward atmosphered room. Kenji wanted to stay and give guidance to Kuroko, but the pleading and beseeching look from Akashi made his mind think otherwise. The old man stood up and nodded in renunciation at Kuroko, which Kuroko replied with another nod but of compliance.
Once they were all out and only the two red and blue were left, the silence returned again. Their hands were long gone from their touches, now far away on where they can't even see each other. No words were exchanged, not even looks, no communication at all. The lingering pain in Akashi's pain is still there, Kuroko was void of all emotion. The light bluenette seemed to sense the unspeaking aura of Akashi, so he decided to speak.
"Where's Kenji-san?" Kuroko asked carelessly.
Akashi didn't answer for awhile, letting the words that came out from Kuroko's mouth melt in the nerves of his mind. The light bluenette was more concerned of where the old man is, not even mentioning the fact that he has forgotten him. It hurt, a lot.
"Out... To give us time to talk..." Akashi quietly said, not more than a whisper. But Kuroko didn't miss the hurt tone in it. The silence said Kuroko's apology, making Akashi crouch down low from his seat, relaxing his tense shoulders.
"Ah..." Kuroko opened his mouth, but closed it, hesitating on his words. Worried that he might hurt Akashi more. Akashi didn't seem to mind, it even looked like he wasn't paying attention, since his heterochromatic eyes were directed outside the window, looking at a couple sitting under a tree and whispering sweet nothings in their ears.
Kuroko frowned, "Akashi-san?"
Akashi flinched his gaze returning back at Kuroko. "Ah, yes?"
"I was... meaning to ask. What was our relationship before... my amnesia?" Kuroko twiddled his fingers, not really sure on how to act in front of someone he doesn't know that well, a stranger.
Akashi didn't want to answer, he didn't want to surprise the light bluenette. He didn't want to hurt him too. The redhead remembered what Dr. Shintarou said, about not letting Kuroko think to much since it was dangerous. He didn't want Kuroko to get hurt again, it pains him to think of Kuroko screaming and ripping his scalp off. So...
"We were good friends. Really good friends, perhaps." Akashi said nonchalantly.
"I see... I'm glad that its nothing too close. I was really worried..." Kuroko smiled slightly and chuckled lightly. "Umm, how often do you visit me?"
"Everyday."
Kuroko's eyes widened, "Wow, so we must be pretty close huh?"
Akashi smiled bitterly, "Yeah..." He didn't want to look at Kuroko, the happy tone of Kuroko's voice hurted him, what more if he saw the expression. "Really... really close friends..." It was barely a whisper, no one heard it but himself.
"That's nice. I've been alone since I was born, you're my very first friend, unless I have forgotten more about my past." The light bluenette leaned back, letting his back rest. His mind thought of something rather out of topic, but his curious nature made him ask. "What do you call me, Akashi-san?"
Akashi's eyebrows narrowed a bit. "Eh?"
"Kuroko-kun, Kuroko-san, Tetsu-san. What do you call me?"
"Oh, umm... Tetsuya."
Kuroko chuckled, "Hahaha, we are close." Akashi smiled and chuckled too. It made Kuroko smile even wider. "Finally..."
Akashi stopped chuckling and looked questionably at the light bluenette. "Hm?"
Kuroko looked at Akashi straight in the eyes and smiled with pure happiness. "You finally smiled." Akashi didn't know how to react to that, his eyes are wide and his mouth slightly open. Pink dusted his cheeks, not really being aware of it. Kuroko chuckled again, poking Akashi's cheeks. "You've been depressed by the fact that I forgot you. Its really nice to see you smile, your smile is really beautiful."
This felt familiar to Akashi. Really familiar.
Akashi composed himself and smiled back. "Your smile is beautiful as well, Tetsuya."
Kuroko's cheeks also dusted pink, his gaze anywhere but on Akashi's. His fingers fidgeting in the slightest bits.
This felt like... old times. But...
"You say some embarrassing things... Akashi-san..."
Something's missing. No, wait... Everything's missing...
Akashi's smile fell, feeling incredibly empty and lonely. Kuroko is no longer a part of him, nothing but a mere friend. And for the umpteenth time this day, it still hurt. It's not like it made him want to die, since he didn't want to leave Kuroko alone. But the feeling of being forgotten by the person that you love the most, the only one you'll ever love, its unbearable.
Another awkward silence commenced. The silence was finally broken when the door opened and Kenji came in. Kenji greeted both Kuroko and Akashi, announcing that lunch is coming soon and a nurse will come in later on and bring it inside the room.
Akashi took out his smartphone and opened the drawer, taking out a charger. The redhead connected the charger to the electricity plug and he opened his homescreen. He fiddled about, trying to find something and his thumb continuously tapped on the screen, he opened an app and left it there. Pressing the button on the side that will make the screen black, he took in a long breath and left his phone on the side table. Akashi turned to Kenji,
"Takeda, my phone is quite low on the battery, I'll leave it here and please don't touch it." Akashi sat up leaving his phone and is making his way out of the room.
Kenji nodded and took Akashi's seat. "Where will you be going?"
"I'll make a visit to the Music Room and I'll buy food. The food downstairs is quite...bland and boring. Oh and is Tetsuya allowed to drink anything?" Akashi stopped and glanced at Kuroko. Kuroko shrugged in reply and turned to Kenji.
The old man tapped his finger to the side table, "Yes of course. He's allowed to eat anything. There's nothing really affecting his stomach or other digestive organs." Akashi nodded and left with a wave. Leaving Kuroko with Kenji and making his way to the abandoned Music Room, where Kuroko and him met.
The redhead's fingers brushed the dusted grand piano, trailing clean marks. He lifted his hand and saw dust particles bunched up at the tip of his fingers. Brushing it away, he took a rag at the corner and made his way to the bathroom.
Akashi turned on the tap and washed the rag, squeezing out the water after washing but not completely. He turned off the tap afterwards, twisted the rag and squeezed it again. He exited the bathroom, leaving the light on and went back to the grand piano. He stared at it for a while before letting the rag fall on the whites and black of keys. He wiped away all the dust and dirt that was stuck in the piano.
The rag dirtied in every thread, wet dust stuck in between. When Akashi couldn't handle the dirt anymore, he went back to the bathroom and wash the rag. Squeezing it damp, he went back to the piano and wiped the uncleaned spots. He repeated this action until he passed the corner of the front. His hand accidentally pressed too much and some keys were down, making a sound. Akashi's fingers twitched in slight surprise and he stared intensely at the keys that he pressed.
Memories flooded his mind of him and his ex-lover. Their piano playings, their duets on some songs, those memorable moments, those laughs. His bangs hid his eyes quite dramatically, underneath those strands of hair are pair eyes that had a trance in them. His hand moved by itself and wiped the remaining and last spots on where the dust is until the whole white and black keys are cleaned.
Akashi stood there for a few minutes, his mind elsewhere in the past. His hand eventually became heavy and accidentally pressed on some white keys of the piano and that reverted him back to the present. The redhead's eyes became resentful and he threw the rag angrily away from him, and landed on a wooden bench in the audience chairs. He furiously kicked the piano and sat down, the piano moving a centimeter away from where it is.
His fingers impassively arranging themselves above chosen keys and staying there. Those heterochromatic eyes scanned his fingers to see if the keys he was about to press were in the right positions. His right middle finger is positioned on the 5th octave's A white key and his left pinky is positioned on the 3rd octave's F# black key. After taking a deep breath, he finally pressed and closed his eyes. His fingers pressing the memorized keys and taking in the whole piece in his ears, the melody making great sense to the song while the bass recognizing the melody gives more emotion and understanding.
As what it is, it's like storytelling. But his mind determines the story, it is his own story. His mind formed unconscious words, and his vocals made a rather fitting tune on those words. He poured all his feelings on those sung lyrics that he made in his own mind, in his own consciousness. It's... quite surprising to him that he was capable of such a thing.
"If there is a road made just for you,
The road is right there in your heart..."
"What I long to do is give my heart to you,
So that you can always hold it close..."
He stopped for the rest and pressed on the keys quite hard, getting to the chorus. Words filled his mind and he just sang it out loud, not really in the mood to even think about those words, just sing it.
"Holding you, holding you,
It's in you, river flows in you
Slowly, just more slowly
There's a flowing river inside me too
Holding you, holding you,
It's in you, river flows in you
Waiting, I'll be waiting,
I'll be waiting for the river flows in us..."
His fingers pressed hard against the keys, not even caring to break it or if the notes are played too loud. He didn't care anymore. He played the chorus really emotionally, the words void in his mind. Instead, what replaced the lyrics was memories of Kuroko and him. Such memorable ones that he couldn't even dream of forgetting, his heart hurted just by thinking about it but he didn't care. Even if his Tetsuya has forgotten him, he is still his Tetsuya. Part of him didn't want to give up on the teal-haired boy but also a part of him just wanted to leave, be far away from this painful memory, and move on.
Akashi didn't notice his eyes blurring with tears, until one drop fell down on an untouched key. His hand unconsciously reached out to press that wet key and the song stopped as he pressed a wrong key. His hands fisted tightly and he banged on the wooden leather chair. His shoulders hunched up as he tried to hide the tears from no one, but himself. Heterochromatic eyes darkening at the shadows that surrounded it and he raised his hands and rested it on the top of the piano, his hands still fisted.
A gasp resounded from his lips, and then another one. "Tetsuya...! I... I'm so sorry...!" His mind screamed profanities at himself, saying that it's all his fault that's why Kuroko is like that, but he didn't want to blame himself. He gasped again and sniffed, his nose becoming a little cloggy. He hid his face in his arms as teardrop after teardrop fell down on the keys below him and sometimes, he bangs his fisted hand on the top of the piano in anger.
Knowing his Tetsuya, the teal-haired boy would probably scold the redhead bluntly, smile, and then pull Akashi in his lap or chest and stroke his hair to comfort him. He wanted Kuroko to do that to him now, Akashi knows it's childish but he felt alone.
'Compose a song, play that song on concertos, and also play that for me in my music room. I will just be there, I won't leave you, so please... Live and play me songs. Play me 'River Flows in You', play me your own song.'
Akashi heard an all too familiar voice in his head. One voice and phrase that he had yet to forget, soft spoken, and well meant.
'So please... Akashi-kun... Don't cry... I'll always be here for you. And there will come a time where we'll meet again, up there.'
Akashi chuckled and wiped away his tears. His mind forming an image where Kuroko is in front of him, saying those words with such love and care. The meaning of that phrase alone was almost ironic to Akashi, yet he still understood. "Don't be stupid Tetsuya. Don't say that as if you know that you're gonna die... Nothing's happened...yet..."
'I'm just making you prepared, Akashi-kun.'
Akashi's heterochromatic eyes blurred as a flow of tears threatened to fall out again. This time, he covered his eyes with both of his palms and bared his teeth. "I know... But you didn't prepare me for this... What will I do now that you've forgotten me? I haven't prepared for this yet..."
...
...
'Akashi-kun. Is it beautiful? The view, I mean.'
No...
'I'm also happy that you trust me as much as I trust you, Akashi-kun.'
I have to...
'I'll try my best Akashi-kun... I won't leave you, ever...'
I have to make Tetsuya remember me..! Tetsuya was so brave, he didn't even fear his own tumor, yet why am I like this? Tetsuya is much more braver than me... I just feel so cowardly...
'I'm just making you prepared, Akashi-kun.'
Then, should I be strong for Tetsuya too?
'I'll try my best Akashi-kun... I won't leave you, ever...'
Yeah... I probably...no... I will definitely be strong for Tetsuya. I'll never leave him ever.
'I love you too, Akashi-kun...'
Kenji almost flinched when the door to the room suddenly opened. Akashi entered the room quietly and closed the door softly as he saw Kuroko napping. The old's man's eyes brightened and he stood up, directing to Akashi.
"Ah, there you are! What took you so long Akashi-san?"
"I apologize, I ate there since there weren't so much people."
"Ah, I see. You see, something came up..."
Akashi raised one of his eyebrows questioningly at the sudden relief of the old man. "Is there something wrong Takeda?"
Kenji scratched the back of his neck and protested whether he should speak or not. The old man sighed and smiled softly, "Well you see, my boss suddenly called me a while ago and he needed to talk to me right away, regarding my leaves. And... If you aren't that much busy, can you be with Kuroko-san for the whole night? I'll probably be given the night shift tonight and...well..." He chuckled and trailed off his words.
Akashi smiled and nodded, "Its fine Takeda. That's much more important than my piano practice. I can stay here as long as you aren't here." Kenji smiled back in huge relief and he waved.
"Thank you Akashi-san, well, I'll be going now." And with the close of the door, he dissapeared from sight. Akashi sighed and sat down on the seat next to the bed, placing the paper bag on side table. He opened it and took out the milkshake he bought for Kuroko and bended down the other side to open the mini fridge that almost camouflaged with the white of the room. He placed the cold beverage inside and closed the cold appliance.
Akashi's relaxed when he yawned and something in his back seemed to crack back in place appreciatingly and he sat back and exhaled slowly. His eyes wandered around the room, then to Tetsuya, then to the phone that he left in the side table.
He removed the plug and reconnected the charger, his screen opened at the intrusion of energy. Entering the password, a voice recorder tab came up with the numbers read as '01:58:06' and it was still counting.
He stopped it and saved the voice file. Before playing it, he took out his earphones and plugged it in the socket then in his ears. He sat back and closed his eyes as he listened.
Most parts were useless conversations and he wanted to skip so badly, yet his mind wanted to not miss anything, even a small detail. Though when silences occur, he skipped in 5 second intervals until he hears a voice. After a long time, nothing interested him or gave him any hints, until...
'Kenji-kun, how close, as friends, are Akashi-kun and me?'
'Friends...?'
'Yes, both of us are close friends right? Akashi-kun himself told me so. But he looked like he didn't want to discuss about it.'
'... Akashi-san...'
'I have something like a feeling that he was the only one who befriended me after all this years. Akashi-kun seemed really kind. He must really be the bestest friend ever, I wish that I didn't forget about him.'
'Kuroko-san... Uhh...'
'Hm? Yes Kenji-san? Is there something wrong?'
'If Akashi-kun was listening to us now he'd probably be angry when I tell this to you, but what he's doing is beyond cowardly and just too stupid'
Akashi chuckled at how right Kenji was, that was a really cowardly thing for him to do. To just run away from the past like that.
'Stupid...? What... Is there something wrong Kenji-san?'
'Well you see, Kuroko-san... You and Akashi-san weren't exactly friends, nor best friends...'
'Eh..? Then were we enemies then, or rivals?'
'Both of you were lovers.'
'... Huh...? Lovers...? But how...'
'It's a long story Kuroko-san, but you will understand if Akashi-san told you. I don't know what happened to him that made him think like that but... I hope that he will fix these odds floating around soon, or maybe later.'
'But aren't we...both guys...?'
'Haha, that's what's so interesting about you two. Both of you don't even worry about those silly things and just think about how you love each other. It's nice, really. Love has no boundaries indeed.'
'...'
'It reminds me of my youth... Of how I loved my wife...'
'No boundaries... Then why... Why did Akashi-kun lie to me...?'
'I have no right to answer that. Ask Akashi-san yourself.'
'Yeah... I think I will.'
'That's better now.'
'Umm...'
'Is there something wrong?'
'I... I think I'm getting drowsy. I'm just going to nap for a while Kenji-san.'
'That's fine, sleep tight.'
'I will.'
The conversation ended and no more voices were left except the ringing of a phone somewhere on '1:30:00', a beep, and Kenji who seemed to talk to someone and was slowly backing away from the voice recorder, and the closing of the door of the room. That probably was his boss.
Akashi sighed and closed the voice recorder app, went back to homescreen and checked if there were messages. None. He closed his phone and put it back in the side table. He stared at Kuroko afterwards and lifted his hand to caress Kuroko's pale but quite rosy cheeks. The light bluenette seemed to stir in his sleep and his long eyelashes flattered and snapped open, revealing big teal-haired irises. The irises looked as if its still sleepy but then it got used to the light and it directed the the redhead who is now touching his cheek.
"Akashi...kun?" Kuroko asked slowly, the sleep still affecting him.
Akashi smiled and pulled back his hand, "Tetsuya."
Kuroko sat up and looked at his surroundings, remembering that he's in the hospital. Yet his mind lingered on the dream he had before Akashi woke him up.
What dream you ask? Well, the dream included him and Akashi sitting in the park. Well, Kuroko was sitting and Akashi is lying down with his head on Kuroko's lap. Both were talking about something, yet Kuroko couldn't hear Akashi nor himself, it was like whispers.
He can do nothing but wait and just watch. Kuroko smiled as he saw himself and Akashi seeming to enjoy each other's company. He light bluenette perked up when he saw Akashi stand up and run away and he felt lonely. Even the 'Kuroko' from his dream felt lonely, but not long after, Akashi came back with a bucket in hand. Kuroko peeked inside and it was...sand? Well, it looked exactly like sand so it must be. He looked at himself and Akashi once again as Akashi seemed to be like talking about something...depressing. The sad smiles and fake laughs said it all.
And then Kuroko's eyes widened when himself from his dream looked as if he saw a dead body and suddenly, Akashi is crying. And not just crying, he was sobbing like there was no tomorrow, clinging into his dream self as if his life depend on it. He saw himself comforting Akashi and suddenly, his dream self was pushed down and they were both making up. Tongues clashed and twirled around each other and Akashi lifted his shirt up. Kissing a trail from his neck and downwards then... he woke up.
It all looked so real. It felt like a memory, a memory that he had forgotten. He wanted to remember, everything that both him and Akashi had. For some reason, at the mention of Akashi and him after the dream, his heart beat crazily.
"Tetsuya. Here." Akashi pushed something cold in Kuroko's hand and he almost flinched at the sudden coldness.
"Eh? What's this? Coke?" Kuroko asked as he studied the cold beverage. 'It's white...'
Akashi shook his head and smiled, "It's your favourite."
Kuroko tilted his head in confusion. Favorite, he has no favorites. Well, as far as he can remember...
'I've never tried milkshakes before. And I don't have any favorites, Akashi-kun. I'll eat anything that you offer me.'
Eh...? What is this... Why am I remembering something now..?
Kuroko looked at Akashi and the latter just raised his eyebrows, "Well? Try it."
'How is it?'
Kuroko put the end of the straw between his lips and sipped slowly, the cold shake touched his tongue and an all too familiar taste filled his senses. Kuroko swallowed and drunk up some more until it was too cold.
Akashi eyed him curiously, "How is it?"
'I think this will be my favorite drink from now on, Akashi-kun.'
"I think this will be my favorite drink from now on, Akashi-kun." Kuroko smiled brightly, that looked too much like his smile when he first tried the cold beverage. Truthfully, Kuroko seemed like he wanted to cry at that moment he said that. He didn't know why but...saying that just hurts. And he can hear a voice saying that too, that sounded like himself, yet...
"T-Tetsuya..." Akashi suddenly muttered shakily, his heterochromatic eyes wide from the memory. The redhead didn't look too much differently, it seemed like he wanted to cry too
Kuroko looked at Akashi and took in the sight. Akashi's eyes were half-lidded and his eyebrows were curved in a very sad expression, his lips in a sad smile, and his hands slightly trembling. He saw Akashi look up at him and Akashi's eyes widened again, his hand lifting to touch Kuroko's cheeks. But Kuroko didn't protest at all, but was surprised.
"Tetsuya... Why are you crying?" The hands that caressed his cheeks wiped away the warm trail and rubbed a spot in his temples.
"I...I don't know..." The light bluenette stuttered and wiped a trail of tears in his other cheek.
"Do you...remember?" Akashi asked slowly, letting his hand fall down on the bedside.
"Why..." Kuroko's eyes were hidden behind bangs. His expression couldn't be seen by Akashi and this confused the redhead.
"Tetsuya?"
"Why... Why didn't you tell me..." Kuroko's eyes were still hidden.
Akashi looked almost knowing and guilty, "W-Why didn't I tell you what?"
"Why didn't you tell me that we were lovers back then?" The light bluenette showed his eyes and Akashi felt guiltier when he saw the betrayed look on Kuroko's face. "Why didn't you tell me something so important...?"
Akashi opened his mouth to speak, yet no words came out, just air. He closed it just to open it once again, but with courage this time. "I didn't want you to get hurt again."
"Get hurt by what?! I'll be more hurt when you didn't tell me!" Kuroko wanted to thrash around in anger, even though it's out of character of him, but still.
"When you remember..! What will happen when I tell you when you clearly don't remember? Of course you'll over-think yourself and you'll get hurt again..." Akashi stated his reasons but not looking straight in Kuroko's eyes. "You don't get it... When I saw you scream in pain everytime you try to remember something... I don't want to see you like that again. I'm scared okay...?"
Kuroko, who still looked like he was betrayed, stared at Akashi. "Scared of what...?"
Akashi smiled bitterly, "Of losing you... I'm not that strong." Kuroko's eyes widened at the all too familiar scene and his betrayed expression slowly turned into a smiling one. He swatted at Akashi's head lightly and that made Akashi look back at him.
"Stupid. What do you think will happen when I don't remember you? Of course you'll lose me too, so you have no choice but to tell me."
"But..." Akashi was suddenly interrupted by a finger on his lips.
"Then I'll promise you one thing." Kuroko started, his eyes filling with happiness and relief. Akashi looked at him that clearly asked 'What is it?'
"I'll try not to think about it too much okay? We will still be lovers, yet I will try to remember slowly so that it won't hurt me, okay?"
Akashi looked like he was protesting inside his head, but the reassuring look from Kuroko made him think of the other side's protest. "Look, Akashi-kun, when you prove me wrong, at least you will have the decency and reason to say 'I told you so.'"
The redhead chuckled and smiled, he removed the finger blocking his lips and spoke up, "Okay, I'll trust you on that one." Kuroko chuckled in harmony and grabbed Akashi's hand, interlocking it with his.
"But when something happens to you..." Akashi brought up once again, tightening the hold on his hand, not too tight to actually hurt though. His eyes were very serious too.
Kuroko looked up at him with curious eyes, "Hm?"
Akashi's expression turned from 360 degrees and he laughed, "I told you so." And Kuroko laughed with him, their hands still interlocking. This moment will definitely be a memory that they won't ever forget.
