Chapter 10: Peter

I wake to a dry feeling in my throat. Not due to the fact I'm thirsty, but because I am nervous. We have two whole days here to fill, two whole days in Candor where we have nothing to do at all.

I climb out of bed and the cold air wraps around my bare legs - Candor doesn't put the heating on in here, wastes their money. As I am pulling on my trousers, I hear a knock on the door.

"Peter, move your ass! We need to wake up sleepy head."

I smile as I remember our conversation last night. Both Eric and I agreed that we were to wake Tris by throwing a bucket of cold water on her head, as our best friend she would both hate and love us for waking her up this way.

Eric bangs on my door. I march over with my trousers still undone. I swing the door open, "will you shut up!"

He holds his hands in the air in defence, "Alright grumpy, can I come in?"

I move aside and shut the door behind him. I finish getting changed and lie down beside him on my bed.

"Was this your old room?" Eric asks.

I laugh, "No. I lived with my family, if I stayed in Candor I would have been given my own apartment - a bit like Dauntless."

"I envy Abnegation, they all have their own houses! If I didn't have someone living above me, I would be so happy!"

"Do you have bad neighbours?" I ask.

Eric sits up and turns to face me, "They have parties every day, get drunk, play loud music, don't get to sleep until 3am. I'm expected to be up and working at 6:30, it's bullshit, Peter."

"Then ask to move, tell Max he will let you."

"No room left at the moment due to the elderly not being kicked out, I ain't got nowhere to stay."

"You can stay at mine; the sofa is free. Tris would be fine giving you the sofa also. We're your friends, all you have to do is ask, Eric."

He smiles at me, "Thanks, Peter. Hey, what's the time?"

I look at the clock that is sitting beside my bedside: 6:43. I turn to look at Eric, "Let's do this."

We walk out my room, checking there is no one outside, we shouldn't be out until half 8. We need to get to the cleaners' rooms, where everything is stored, that is located on the third floor - we are on the fifth.

"Back stairs?" whispers Eric.

I think for a moment, what would have less Candor security. "No not that way, security it high down there."

"Wow, they must be smarter than Dauntless."

"They aren't, I promise you that." I think to back when I used to live here, I remember that when I was 8 there was a small room in which a ladder was located - it will get us to the fourth floor at least. "This way."

We locate the ladder and get up to the fourth floor with ease. "What now, Candor?"

"For me to punch you in the face, Erudite."

"I'm being serious!"

After crouching for a while, I stand up straight and walk straight out into the open.

"What the hell are you doing!" whispers Eric.

"Going to the fifth floor like we need to. They don't put security anywhere up here. They trust the people of this faction."

We are able to walk casually down the corridors leading to the cleaner's rooms. I know it won't be locked. The cleaners start at 7:30.

The journey to and from the cleaner's room was long and the large bucket of water was extremely heavy for us. When we eventually reach Tris's door, a familiar face is there to greet us. Four.

"And what are you two lunatics planning to do?" He has his arms crossed over his chest and has one eyebrow up. Four looks as though he is our father and has caught us up after bedtime. We stand for a moment, shocked that he has found us out. We know that he won't tell Candor on us but telling Dauntless is another option.

"We just thought we should give Tris a nice wakeup call this morning, and Peter knew where to get a bucket of water so we thought Candor was the only place that we could do it.," Eric explains as though he doesn't want to get told off.

"What a lovely thought that you had for Tris. I mean she must be so elated for this to happen to her."

"Hey, Four, you wanna help? I mean it would be better if we had someone to help this plan as the runaway is going to be hell, as Tris is very fast."

Four stops and thinks for a second before a smile crosses his face, "I'll help yes, but I am going to be the person out the door first."

We laugh and agree that Four has nothing to do with the water. I whip out the skeleton key card that I got given in case one of our group forgot or loses theirs; I put it into the door, the locks undo and the door opens.

The three of us quietly move to the side of Tris's bed. We lift up the bucket and tilt it to its side, so the water come pouring down, straight onto Tris's face.
