Percy POV 14 years old
As Percy walked the halls on the first day of high school, he had not been prepared for this. He was prepared for being pelted with objects and tortured, as he was a freshman. He was not ready for the hungry stares he got from the girls and some of the guys at the school. Annabeth walked beside him, now a good four inches shorter than him. Percy at 5'11'' and Annabeth at 5'7''.
Percy's windblown hair was just at that rebel length where it brushed his eyelashes and hid his eyebrows. Percy bright sea-green eyes contrasted deeply with his ebony hair and tanned skin. Annabeth on the other hand had the curliest beach-blonde hair and piercing gray eyes, She had a tanned complexion also. All in all they were both thoroughly attractive.
Percy and Annabeth found their friends on their way to the lockers. Sadly they found that they all only had one period in common, math, of course math of all subjects. Only Percy and Thalia had the same lunch and they always argued. Annabeth, Grover and Nico had the same lunch but they were never really that close. Nico thought that Annabeth was a know-it-all and Annabeth thought that Nico was too gloomy but they still could make polite conversation.
So Percy and Nico walked to Biology while Annabeth walked to Chemistry and Grover and Thalia went to Latin class. Percy decided to make small talk with his younger cousin, Nico had been spared from dyslexia unlike the other two cousins, Thalia and him. Nico was also very smart though a bit depressed which is why he was in highschool not 8th grade. Sadly Nico's older sister, Bianca, was in a coma.
"Hey, Percy, you know what I just realized tastes really good? Coffee! Grover was having some this morning and it smelled really good, so I said, 'Why don't I try it?' so I tried it, at first it was really bitter but then I added some sugar and creamer and it tasted amazing! Do you like coffee 'cause I really, really, really, rea-"
"Hey, Nico, will you do me a favor and just shut up!" Percy shouted, Nico recoiled at the sound of Percy's tone,
"Don't think I've forgotten that it's your fault why Bianca's this way Percy, it's all your fault." Nico practically whispered, then Nico walked faster so he passed Percy.
Percy's eyes widened and he bit his lip remembering the day when Bianca got injured.
FLASHBACK!
"Percy, c'mon I wanna go look at the lake from the cliff!" Screamed Bianca
"Coming Bi! Are you sure this is a good idea, I mean something bad could happen."
Percy said worriedly, Bianca just rolled her eyes at Percy's antics. She grabbed Percy's hand and dragged him towards the cliff. Percy shook Bianca off saying that he could walk for himself. Bianca tripped over a vine of ivy and fell and hit her head on a rock, she fell unconscious. Percy panicked for a little while, then remembering he should get Bianca to the campsite. Percy scooped her up in his arms and picked his way through the wooded terrain back to the campsite.
Once there he called for help from Thalia and Annabeth, Annabeth stayed behind to get Bianca comfortable while Thalia ran to get an adult. There was no blood but nevertheless the nurse said to get an ambulance. Turn's out the nurse was right, if Bianca had gotten there later she might have died.
FLASHBACK OVER!
Percy was zoned out and then to make matters worse the teacher asked him a question.
"Mr. Jackson, hmmm... What is the most common fish in the Pacific Ocean?" Somehow Percy knew the answer.
"The Eastern Pacific Tuna, sir." The teacher turned away, a bit baffled that the troublesome boy knew the answer the rather difficult question. Percy on the other hand went back to remembering
FLASHBACK!
Percy had tried bundle up that evening, he headed to the hospital, which was only a couple of blocks away. He had effectively avoided Nico for a couple of weeks after the one confrontation about how he did nothing to help Bianca. Percy hoped he wouldn't see Nico there as he already had enough guilt on his shoulders without someone else telling him it was his fault too. Gabe had tortured Percy effectively and so Percy had snuck out to see Bianca. Percy checked his watch and cursed, it was already 8 p.m. and the hospital visiting hours were over at 9 p.m. Percy arrived at the hospital and went towards the ward.
"Hey Bi, it's me, Percy, Nico seriously blames me for getting you into a coma. I feel really bad, I mean it is my fault, I know you would probably tell me that I'm crazy but I know it's my fault. I really miss you Bi, we all do, Thalia can't go a week without shedding at least one tear. And I know you know Thalia so it's ridiculous to think about. Nico, he really hates me and Annabeth, well, she doesn't blame me but you can see our friendship is a bit splintered, even if that's just because we found out we're not blood related." Percy let out a dry laugh,
"You would probably call me a coward and laugh, but your younger brother is seriously scary. I mean I can't get over what I've done, I know I would get really upset if Annabeth was in a coma and Thalia was the only one there and she could have saved her but didn't/ I don't blame Nico for taking out his anger on me, it's all my fault."
Percy now had tears streaming down his face, he kissed Bianca on the forehead and said goodbye. Percy left the hospital but on his way to the main exit, Nico saw him.
"What the heck Percy! You have no right to see her, you're the reason why she's like this!"
"Nico, I-I-I" Percy stuttered, he stopped, but his head down, and walked out. He walked in the below freezing weather with his head down and in his threadbare jacket. Percy shivered against the wet snow and furious winds. Percy made his way back home, silver tears running down his frozen face. His heart ached for the fun loving Nico he once knew.
FLASHBACK OVER!
The bell rung and Percy headed to his next class, English, which he had with Annabeth.
LINE BREAK LIKE BREAN LEKE BRIAN LINE BREAK HEHEHE
Percy and Annabeth walked home and Percy poured out his feelings about Nico and how Nico was reacting.
"-Annabeth I just don't know what to do. We used to be great friends and now he despises me. I mean he has a good reason, it's just that I really feel bad and I know it's my fault it's just that I already feel bad enough without him telling me and life is just so hard when your former friend won't talk to you and I-"
"Percy, you need to stop blaming yourself," Annabeth held up a hand as if she knew Percy was going to interrupt, "It's not all your fault, you didn't trip her so it's not your fault."
Percy nodded to show that he heard Annabeth. Percy still didn't believe that what Annabeth said was true. They walked home in silence. Annabeth took out her key and opened the door. Percy raced to his room and took out the photos of all the good time that Bianca and the rest had spent together, as one big happy family.
Then Percy came across a bunch of pictures of him and a bunch of his other friends. Percy was sponsored by a company to go and compete in a nation-wide swimming meet along with many other swimmers around the area. He met a couple of friends in the two weeks he had been there. On the back was all of their numbers so he could call them anytime.
Reyna, a Hispanic girl with glossy black curls and obsidian eyes who reminded Percy of Annabeth was standing next to Percy while Reyna's crazy boyfriend who was obsessed with fire, Leo, another Hispanic, had his arm around Reyna's shoulders. Then Hazel, an African American girl with cinnamon colored hair and warm brown eyes was standing next to her boyfriend, a Chinese boy who was tall and muscular and next to Percy. Then Piper, a part Cherokee girl, with her choppy brown hair and multicolored eyes stood behind Hazel and next to her boyfriend, Jason who had neat blond hair and bright blue eyes and happened to be Thalia's brother.
Percy smiled sadly at the memory and decided to call Leo up because that who he was closest to in the whole group. He called Leo, and Leo picked up on the fourth ring.
"Hey, my friend, I haven't heard from you in a while. Anyway, who is this?" Leo said.
"Hey Leo, it's me Percy. Remember me?"
"Oh, yea, hey Perce, what brings you to call after all this time?"
"Oh nothing, just looking at all those pictures we took."
"I remember those, man that was the greatest time ever. I just loved it, anyway, I have to go but I'll call you later OK, text me, that's a better way to reach me, I mean, I'm more reliable that way."
"Got you, bye Leo."
"Bye, my little friend-who-happens-to-be-older-and-taller-than-me." Percy hung up and laughed. What was a bad day turned out better than he expected. Percy texted all of his old friends and went downstairs to do his dreaded homework.
