Chapter 9: The Chunin Exams Begin

Swordsmanwielder: Yeah, I thought the OVA was cute, and decided to add it in here since I didn't do the two missions that Naruto's team actually tool in between Wave and the Chunin Exams.

(A month later)

Naruto sighed as he collapsed into his bed after getting out of the shower. The past month had been boring to say the least. Team Seven had gotten a couple of interesting missions, but none of them were long enough, or hard enough to be classified as a joint mission. Team eight had been stuck doing d-rank missions during that time. The upside, at least to Naruto, was that the blonde got to spend more time with Konohamaru, increase his sealing and sensing abilities, and he had time to rearrange some of the things in the Uzumaki compound.

Getting out of bed the blonde walked to his bathroom and grabbed his headband off the sink. If he could have seen the mirror, he would have seen something that no one had seen in roughly eight years. His eyes hadn't been completely destroyed, and although his sight could be save it wasn't as if he was walking around with two holes in his head. His eyes were clouded to the point that they almost resembled the Byakugan. There was a scar that stretched from one temple to the next, going across his eyelids. (1)

Tying his headband in place Naruto headed towards his training ground. The bright side of the day would most likely be that Team Eight wouldn't be taking a d-rank mission. Naruto had overheard Anko and Kurenai talking about how Team Eight had been kept in Konoha so they would have more time to train for the upcoming Chunin Exams. Since the exam was a week away, the jonin were going to call off training and missions to give the team a few days to rest.

When Naruto got to the training ground, he was a little surprised that Kiba and Akamaru had beaten him. The brunette usually showed up right at the last second. Feeling how warm Kiba's chakra was, made Naruto's heart beat a little faster. "Good morning Kiba-kun." The blonde said with a smile.

Kiba blushed as Naruto walked into the clearing. "Good morning Naruto." Kiba scratched the back of his head as Akamaru, from the inside of his hood, poked his head over the brunette's shoulder.

As Naruto moved towards Kiba he could tell something was on the Inuzuka's mind. "Is everything alright?"

Kiba almost jumped when Naruto asked that, before laughing at himself. "Yeah, I am just being stupid." After saying that Kiba took one of Naruto's hand in his. "Hey Naruto, I was wondering if later tonight you wanted to go do something? It could be our first official date, ya know."

Kiba could see the blush creeping onto Naruto's face, along with a smile that made Kiba's heart flutter slightly. "I would love to Kiba-kun."

Kurenai, who had been in the clearing under a genjutsu the whole time decided to let the boy's know she was there and release them. As she appeared they jumped apart, startled at her sudden appearance. After they calmed down she spoke. "Anko won't be here this morning and I can go tell Hinata this, but we won't have training or missions for the rest of the week. Here are the applications for the Chunin Exams, if you want to participate then be at the academy at eight in the morning on Monday." As she handed the boy's the forms, she disappeared.

Naruto chuckled as he was handed the form. "Scientia effusio (Knowledge absorption)" As the blonde muttered the spell, he could tell what was on the form. All it said is that 'I Kurenai Yuhi have recommended Team Eight, consisting of Naruto Uzumaki, Kiba Inuzuka, and Hinata Hyuga for this year's Chunin Exams.'

Smirking Kiba pocketed the form. "We are going to destroy the exams this year."

Naruto smiled at the taller boy's confidence. "While I know we are good, you have to keep in mind that the other villages will only send their best genin." Kiba looked at Naruto, worried that the boy was scared. At least until he saw the smile on the blonde's face. "There is no use worrying about it. I suggest that you get your mom to train you for the next four days, and take Saturday and Sunday off to rest. I am guessing that the jonin have some extra work, which is why we aren't getting trained by them."

Kiba nodded at the blonde's reasoning. "So what do you want to do now? I was hoping to train for a little while and then shower before our date."

Naruto shifted his feet slightly. "I am not really sure what we should do. Umm, do you have any idea of what we are going to do?"

Kiba scratched the back of his head, blushing. "Not really, I guess we should figure that out."

An hour later Naruto was walking back to the Uzumaki compound. Kiba had decided that they should go out to eat, but neither of them felt like sitting in a restaurant getting stared at. The brunette then decided that they could get some food to go and have a picnic. Naruto had been the one to suggest having it at a lake near his compound. When Naruto got to the compound he walked towards a tree before taking a leaf from it. Two days ago the group had learned their affinities. Naruto's main affinity was wind, Kiba had earth, and Hinata had fire.

Spending a few hours trying to cut a leaf with his chakra had gotten rid of some of the energy, but the blonde, while sweating, still had over seventy-five percent of his chakra left. Getting up he made as many shadow clones as he could to work on the exercise while he went inside to shower again, needing to remove the sweat that had accumulated while he was training, and change. Right before he stepped in the shower, Naruto fell against a wall, and lost consciousness.

Naruto woke and as he opened his eyes he shot up. He looked around surprised that he could actually see his surroundings. Reaching up and touching his eyes he could still feel the scar and he wasn't sure what was going on. He looked around, staring at the red and blue pipes running along the broken down stone walls. He could feel a numbness creep into the tips of his fingers as his heart started racing. He had to lean against the wall as he started having breathing troubles.

Calm down and breathe child.

Hearing the soft tone the voice spoke with, Naruto tried to listen to it. Closing his eyes he concentrated on the familiar blackness. "What is going on?" He asked aloud.

You are in your mind, the shock of being able to see in here caused you to have a panic attack.

"My mind," Naruto mumbled. "Does that mean you are the Kyuubi no Kitsune"

Yes I am, now follow the pipes and we will talk.

Not sure what else he could do the blonde started walking until he came to a room that was twice the size of the Hokage Monument. In the room was a giant cage filled with darkness, with two blood-red eyes and a large set of sharp, gleaming teeth exposed.

We meet at last young one.

"Hello Kyuubi" Naruto said, not really sure what he was supposed to say.

Are you scared boy, nervous maybe?

"A little, would any sane person be completely fine meeting you face to face for the first time?" The blonde asked before chuckling at the thought of Kiba trying to act like he wasn't scared. As the picture entered his head, Naruto heard a deep chuckle from the Kyuubi.

Your puppy would be shaking in his boots while yelling up at me. Most likely insulting me for the things you had to go through.

Naruto shifted slightly, knowing the demon was right. "So what now? How did I get here when I have been trying to contact you for a month?"

You are here because of your clones outside. When you create so many for training, it allows my chakra more freedom. You should be safe making one hundred clones for training, but any more than that will be rough on the seal. The damage it could cause would be dangerous for you.

Naruto was unsure why the demon was telling him this, but before he could ask the demon spoke again.

You were expecting me to be aggressive child?

Stunned the blonde could do little more than nod.

You know there was a time when I would have wanted to rip you apart. If I could have killed you the night I attacked, I would have. When I tried your parents threw themselves in the way.

At this point a screen appeared and Naruto watched his parents' last moment. Tears were leaking from his eyes. "Why did you show me this?"

Do you hate me child?

As the question was asked, Naruto looked up, tears in his eyes, and directly into the Bijuu's eyes. "No"

That is why I told you. I have watched you for years. Watched you grow, saw your first step, first word, and so many other things. I know more about you then anyone in the village. The kind nature you have towards those who wronged you. Now go, you need to get ready for your first date after all.

As soon as the Kyuubi said that, Naruto found himself back in his bathroom. "Kyuubi"

A few seconds later he heard a deep yawn. 'You simply need to think to talk to me child. Although I am surprised you want to.'

Starting the water and letting it warm up the blonde took off his headband. 'Umm, I have actually been wanting to ask you about my sensing abilities.'

Another yawn was heard. 'We will talk tomorrow, I am going to take a nap so that you can have some alone time with your puppy.'

Naruto stripped and stepped into the shower, allowing the water to wash over him as the Kyuubi's words ran through his mind. He thought about how the Bijuu talked about watching him grow and it gave him a strange feeling. He had actually had someone watching over him since birth. 'Even if he didn't want to be with me, he has watched over me my whole life. Like a father would.' The last thought made things too complicated for the blonde to deal with. Sighing he climbed out of the shower and grabbed a towel. Drying off he started getting dressed.

He had decided to wear his normal outfit, and decided in this case meant he didn't have anything else to wear. As he finished getting dressed he heard a knock at the door. Since Naruto could feel Kiba's chakra. Rushing to the door, Naruto smiled brightly as he opened it.

(Kiba PoV)

I knocked on the door, waiting for Naruto. I was wearing my training cloths, having been to worried about getting the food ready to focus on wearing something different. I couldn't believe that we were going on our first official date. We had kissed some, and spent a lot of time together, and even tried to eat alone once, although Ino and her team interrupted that one, we haven't done this yet. I am feeling nervous and it shows as I shift my feet uncomfortably. As the door opens though I feel everything else just sort of disappeared. All I could think about was how Naruto's damp hair wasn't as spiky and how that single bead of water was flowing down his neck. I looked at his lips and wanted to kiss them again. It was then I realized that he was talking.

(Normal PoV)

Naruto opened the door and when it opened Kiba was in front of him. Naruto of course knew he was there the moment he knocked. Naruto could feel heat coming from his boyfriend's chakra. It wasn't the warmth they normally shared, it was different. The feeling almost made Naruto shiver although he didn't know why. "Kiba, are you ready." When the Inuzuka didn't answer Naruto talked louder. "KIBA!"

Kiba almost jumped when he heard his name. "Sorry Naru." He said with a blush. "Are you ready to go."

When Naruto nodded the two headed off. When they got the lake they ate in peace, enjoying each other's company, and after eating a nice meal. At least it was nice to them as Kiba had picked up ramen from Ichiraku's, sealed away in a scroll that Naruto had given him, for the blonde as well as a couple hamburgers for himself. After they had ate Naruto laid his head on Kiba's lap and looked at the stars. Kiba was alright with it, but he had noticed that something was on Naruto's mind. "What is wrong Naru?"

Naruto wasn't really sure how to put it into words, but even with Kiba he couldn't seem to shake the thoughts he had in relation to the Kyuubi. When he explained what happened, Naruto expected Kiba to think he was an idiot. "So what particularly are you worried about?"

Naruto smiled at his Kiba's question. "To be honest I am not sure. I have doubts that he might be manipulating me, but what worries me more is what I thought. I mean he had been the source of a lot of pain in my life, but it isn't like it is his fault. He didn't choose to be sealed in me, and he didn't make the villagers attack me."

Kiba grabbed Naruto's hand and squeezed it. "I don't really know what to tell you, ya know. Still I trust you to make the right decision." After staying at the lake for another hour the two decided to head back home. When they got to the back to the Uzumaki Compound, Naruto kissed Kiba, before pulling away fast enough that the brunette could respond. "Good night Kiba-kun." As he rushed back inside Naruto whispered the words he was too scared to end the night on. "I love you"

Unbeknownst to Naruto Kiba had chakra channeled into his ears and heard it. The brunette then whispered, "I love you too Naru." before walking away, a big silly grin on his face.

The blonde walked towards his room when Kyuubi spoke to him. 'Next time you should tell him you love him.'

Naruto almost jumped out of his skin at the voice. 'I thought you were sleeping.'

A light chuckle echoed through the blonde's head. 'I was sleeping to give you your privacy, but I woke up a few seconds before you ran inside. I know you well enough to know that you are worried that if say it he won't say it back. He will though child.'

Naruto thought about what to say when he thought about what Kiba told him when they got back from Wave. 'He doesn't want to hide his feelings from me, why should I hide mine from him.' With that in mind Naruto laid down and went to bed.

(Saturday afternoon)

Naruto's week had been a whirlwind so far. He had talked quite a bit the Kyuubi and learned a few things from the fox. He learned that his sensing ability came from his family, and that he could sense more emotions then Mito could is because of his lost sight. When one sense is lost the others strengthen after all. He also learned about his family's chakra chains, which Kyuubi was helping him recreate as it would give him a ranged weapon.

He didn't get to see Kiba since they were both training their asses off, but today Tsume was throwing a dinner for Team Eight to celebrate their nomination. As Naruto was walking down the street towards the Inuzuka Compound he felt Konohamaru's chakra. The bad part was that the boy's chakra was moving fast, and changing directions every few seconds indicating distress. Moving towards him, he could tell the boy was running from Sakura of all people.

Following their chakra signatures, Naruto saw Konohamaru about to bump into a ninja. He had just gotten close enough to hear them, when the two collided. Instantly Konohamaru tried to apologize, stating that it was an accident. When the ninja, who Naruto guessed was here for the exams, Picked Konohamaru up and drew his fist back, chakra coating the fist in preparation for the hit. It was a hit that wouldn't come though as Naruto slammed his hand into the ground, causing chakra chains to shoot from the ground and wrap around the teen, including his mouth.

As he moved forward taking Konohamaru from the teen's grip, Naruto narrowed his eyes. "What is going on here?"

Of course Sakura added her two cents. "And what are two Sand nin doing here?"

Temari was sweating after seeing what happened to Kankuro. "My name is Temari, and this is my brother Kankuro. We are here to take the Chunin Exams. Kankuro overreacted when that child bumped into him."

At this point Naruto felt a dark chakra in the tree to his right, but before he could speak Kyuubi did. 'Kit, the child in the tree houses the Ichibi. He is the most unstable and tends to drive his container insane, be careful.'

Logging the information away, Naruto spoke. "Well you three will have to come with me."

Kankuro was in no shape to argue, and Temari was to shocked by Naruto saying three to say anything. As such Gaara floated down from the tree on a cloud of sand. "I can assure you that this won't happen again. My brother is an embarrassment."

Feeling the dark chakra made Naruto nervous, but something had to be done. "I am sorry, but you will have to come with me. There will need to be a report filed seeing as how your teammate attempted to attack the Sandaime's grandson."

That statement cause Temari's eyes to widen and Naruto could feel her chakra swirling chaotically in all directions. "We didn't know he was-"

Naruto cut her off though. "It doesn't matter. The fact is that this could have cause an international incident and lead to another war. Now if you do not come with me I will be forced to detain you as well Temari. After all you were involved. Gaara, you should come as well. While you could be spared from punishment, it is possible that their actions will have you removed from the village and forbidden to take the exams."

Feeling the darkness in Gaara's chakra grow stronger, made the blonde tense at least until the redhead spoke. "We will come with you."

Naruto nodded and created a chakra chain from his arm that lifted the bond Kankuro. "Kono-kun you will need to come as well." The small child instantly nodded and followed, staying as close to Naruto as he could.

It took an hour after getting to the Hokage Tower, but it was decided that Kankuro and Temari would be unable to be promoted to chunin during the exams no matter what they did. Gaara had calmed down when he learned he could participate and the three had left in a hurry after that. Naruto had learned that the children were the Kazekage's, and assumed that was why there were allowed to stay in the village.

Getting to the Inuzuka Compound twenty minutes later, the blonde felt tired. After having to explain to his boyfriend why he was late, and then explain why Gaara should be avoided at all cost, all Naruto wanted to do was go home and sleep. As he got ready to leave though Kiba wrapped his arms around the blonde. "I love you Naru." The dog-nin whispered.

Leaning back into him Naruto had a smile on his face. "I love you too Kiba-kun." He whispered back as the Inuzuka pulled him away from the door.

"You should stay here tonight." Kiba muttered. "It would be the same thing as sleeping in the same tent, ya know." Naruto wasn't sure what to say as Kiba pulled him upstairs. When they got the the brunette's room they collapsed on the bed and Kiba pulled Naruto as close as he could.

After shifting to where Kiba was on his back one arm curled around Naruto, the blonde curled into his side with head on the taller boy's chest, the blonde was too comfortable to leave. As Kiba called Akamaru up onto the bed Naruto smiled. After a few minutes both boys were fast asleep, not knowing that Tsume had snapped a picture of them the moment they had.

(Monday morning)

Kiba woke up with Naruto in his arms once again. He had managed to keep the blonde at his house for a second night in a row after the blonde had gotten a change of clothes and the things he thought he might need for the exam. Looking at the sleeping face of the blonde made Kiba smile. He wondered if Naruto ever really removed his blindfold, or headband, as even when sleeping the blonde seemed to keep it covered.

As shifted, thinking that he should probably get up, Naruto stirred. The blonde woke up feeling Kiba' chakra next to him, the smell of the brunette encompassing him. Akamaru who was sleeping at the foot of the bed, woke up to the movement of the two and barked, what Naruto assumed was good morning, before stretching in the cute way all dogs do. Facing Kiba, Naruto gave the boy a kiss right on his fang mark. "Good morning Kiba-kun."

Kiba captured the smaller boy's lips. "Good morning Naru. We should start getting ready for the exams." Naruto nodded and the two boy's got out of bed, and rushed through their morning rituals. Naruto showered first, before rushing downstairs while Kiba got in the shower with Akamaru. That was a habit Naruto hadn't known about until the night before.

Shaking his head Naruto grabbed something to drink out of the fridge. Although he still felt awkward doing that. He had asked Tsume the morning before if he could get something to drink and got told that he didn't have to ask when he was at the compound. There was also the fact that both Hana and Tsume had things to do this morning.

After Kiba got out of the shower, and made breakfast for the three of them, as it turns out he is a better cook then Naruto as he had to learn to cook for himself when he was learning how to make food for Akamaru. The three ate rather quickly and left. When they were a block away from the academy, Naruto could feel Hinata enter his range, running to meet them at the front gate. She got there at roughly the same time as Naruto, Kiba, and Akamaru. As they walked into the building Naruto could feel chakra running through a couple rooms above them.

Going towards the stairs he spoke. "There is a genjutsu ahead, we should ignore and just move on. If anyone does fall for it, it means less competition. It seems like the exams have already started, and remember to stay clear of Gaara, I can feel his dark chakra from here."
