Oliver had fetched a blanket and a glass of water for Felicity, now he sat beside her on the couch, with Diggle sitting across from them.
"What happened at the hospital?" Oliver asked, purposely directing his question at his friend instead of Felicity.
"Oliver, this man is sick. I've seen a lot in Afghanistan, but that…" Diggle shook his head. "He's incredibly good at playing mind games."
Felicity moved closer to Oliver and he put his arm around her. "You shouldn't have taken her to the hospital, Diggle."
The bodyguard was just about to defend himself when Felicity interrupted. "Oliver, you can't blame Diggle, if he hadn't taken me, I would have gone there alone without telling you."
The CEO drew in a sharp breath at the thought of Felicity alone with her stepfather.
"I have to deal with this at some point. All those years I thought I'd gotten over it, but I just suppressed it. I overestimated my own strength, I guess it's going to take more time still." The IT girl hung her head.
"No matter how long it takes, we'll be there for you and make sure he can never hurt you again", Diggle said.
Felicity raised her head and looked at him with glassy eyes. "How, Diggle? You heard him, he will wait for me, he's almost gotten the two of you out of his way already."
Oliver looked at the bodyguard questioningly.
"Edward Andrews thinks that with you in prison and me no longer working for you, it will be easier for him to get to her. It was Felicity he wanted all along, he had already watched her before he met her mother." Diggle's voice had changed, gotten more dangerous. Felicity was like a sister for him and just like Oliver he felt the need to protect her.
Oliver's muscles tensed and in his mind Andrews died in the most horrible way possible for about the hundredth time. Felicity's stomach rebelled. She jumped up and ran to the bathroom.
Oliver wanted to follow her but Diggle stopped him. "Oliver, we have to get this guy, but I don't know if that will be enough. This man has a severe psychological dysfunction. He will wait for Felicity, not matter for how long he's going to prison."
"I know." Oliver scrubbed his hands across his face. "But I need evidence. If the Arrow kills Edward Andrews now, Oliver Queen can't prove his innocence."
Diggle nodded. "Guess the Arrow should pay Edward a visit and make him talk."
"My thoughts as well, but I'm not sure I could restrain myself." Oliver's voice sounded dangerous; he shook his head as if he wanted to get rid of that thought as quickly as possible. "Did he say anything else?"
Diggle pulled a face. "He only married her mother to get to her. You are a major thorn in his side and," he stopped for a moment, "he said if he can't get Felicity, he'll wait to get her children."
Oliver's heart seemed to stop for a moment. Felicity's children. Usually that thought filled him with warmth, now it sent an icy shiver down his spine. For him, her children meant his children. As the biggest playboy of Starling City he had never thought about marriage or children – until Felicity had appeared on the scene. He had always ignored the thought, a wife and kids had no place in his life, but with Felicity the thought seemed to be just perfect.
The blond IT girl looked pale when she came back into the living room. She sat back down on the couch and wrapped the blanket tightly around herself again. Oliver put his hand on her knee. "Are you okay?"
"Mhhmmm, yes…. I just needed to throw up… the thought that…. it's okay." She forced a smile.
"Come here." Oliver pulled her against him. "Diggle and I will keep you safe. We already thought of something."
Felicity let her head rest against his shoulder and closed her eyes. In his arms she was safe, she'd known that from the moment he had appeared in her office with the bullet-riddled laptop. In spite of his little lies she had immediately trusted him. Her thoughts started to drift until she fell asleep. Oliver didn't move a muscle, afraid he'd wake her up.
Diggle watched, amused. Oliver deserved this happiness. Around Felicity, the bodyguard had discovered a new side to his friend. Beside the Arrow Oliver, who was cold as ice, and the billionaire who didn't have to worry about anything, there was also Oliver, the family man, who loved his family and Felicity with all of his heart and wanted to protect them from all evil.
Night had fallen over Starling City. The Arrow was standing on the roof of a high-rise and looked over to the house across the street. Andrews had already been in town longer than anybody had thought. Tonight he would get him, he was sure of that, he only hoped that he wouldn't lose control.
Felicity's stepfather sat down on the couch, wincing in pain. Oliver Queen would pay for getting involved with his girl and for the broken ribs. The light in the room began to flicker before it went out completely. He tried to get up, but a hand pressed him back. The only thing he could see was the outline of a man with a hood on his head.
"Edward Andrews, you have hurt someone who is under my protection. Now you will pay for that", the Arrow said, closing his fingers around the man's throat.
"I don't know what you're talking about", Andrews croaked.
"Felicity Smoak", Oliver was very close to losing control completely.
Edward Andrews started to laugh. "My little Lissy has interesting friends in this city; a billionaire , an bodyguard and an archer."
Oliver's grip tightened. "What did you do to her?" Oliver had to hear it, he needed the man's confession on tape as evidence.
"Go ahead, kill me and save your little girlfriend. But with my death you will send an innocent man to prison." Edward's voice grew weaker but it was still triumphant.
Damn it, the guy was clever, cold as ice and devious as the devil. Oliver's blood was boiling and his muscles almost thrummed with tension. He grabbed an arrow and rammed it forcefully into Andrews' thigh. "If I see you anywhere close to Felicity Smoak, I will kill you."
While Andrews cried out in pain, the Arrow planted a bug and silently left the apartment.
