If it hadn't been for Smithy sending her home, she wouldn't be here.

She had been feeling a tad under the weather for a few days when Smithy caught her dozing in the computer room. Instead of yelling, he had sent her home with instruction to go and see the doctor.

A visit to the doctor had turned into the ambulance ride to the hospital and numerous tests. As she lay in the bed, the hospital smells of antiseptic crept up her nostrils and she could hear the bustle around her.

"Ms Noble?" A white coated doctor asked entering her cubicle.

"Yes?"

"I am Matt Giles; I'll be your doctor whilst you are here."

"You make it sound like I will be here for a while, doctor!" Diane quipped, trying to gulp down the feeling rising in her throat.

"We still have a number of tests to run."

"Will I be here overnight?"

"Yes, at least until tomorrow."

"Is there somewhere I can call work to let them know?"

"I will get the nurse to get you a phone."

Diane waited whilst the phone line connected then rang.

"Inspector Smith."

"Smithy, it's Diane."

"What's up Diane, what did the doctor say?"

"He has given me tomorrow off on sick leave. I'll bring in the doctors certificate the day after."

"Okay, have a rest, all right? See you on Sunday."

Having just finished her breakfast, she was not exactly expecting the doctor to appear, but appear he did with a grim expression that made her stomach sink.

"Diane, I have the results from your blood tests."

She nodded silently.

"The test results show that you have Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia".
