Ha Ni stood there, unable to move. Her heart raced faster and faster as she came to terms with what's happening.
"EOMONIE!" Ha Ni yelled. Suddenly, something squeezed her abdomen, hard. The pain shot through her like a dart and she could nothing, but crouch and wait for it to go.
Geum Hee hastily told the delivery guy to wait and rushed into the kitchen. She already knew what it was.
"I will get your hospital bag!" Geum Hi sprinted off and came back in a flash.
The contractions seemed to have gone away and Ha Ni could stand.
"Should we call an ambulance?" Ha Ni asked with a trembling voice, "He isn't meant to be born today", Ha Ni whispered quietly.
"By the time the ambulance came, you would have given birth already!" Seung Jo's mother exclaimed.
"Then what should we do?" Ha Ni asked, "Hurry!"
Geum Hee ran to the delivery man who was still waiting at the door patiently, oblivious of what was happening inside.
"We need your car!"
The man looked up, surprised.
"What? But I need to make deliveries after yours; you've already held me up, no way am I going to give you a ride!"
…
"Hurry up!" Geum Hee yelled at the delivery man, whose name was Park Sul.
"Okay, okay! I can't race through traffic, y'know!"
Beads of sweat were forming on Ha Ni's forehead, but she didn't make a fuss, knowing it'll make her mother-in-law even more worried.
Park Sul turned around to look at the mess in the back seats. Packages were everywhere, and boxes were everywhere.
"Yah! Geum Hi-ssi! There are fragile vases behind you, be care-"
CRACK!
Geum Hee didn't seem to notice.
Park Sul rubbed his forehead, "I am going to get a right old telling off for this".
"Call Seung Jo", Ha Ni said.
Geum Hee took Ha Ni's phone and dialled Seung Jo's number.
"Seung Jo!" Ha Ni's mother-in-law said as he picked up, "Ha Ni's in labour! Yes… we are going to Parang Hospital. We are… about 5 minutes away from it".
Ha Ni
It feels so weird. It hurts, but it also feels… comforting. Our baby is really coming. Once we entered the hospital, Seung Jo raced towards us, panic written across his face. Why was Seung Jo panicking? He's never been panicked.
"Are you alright?" his eyes searching mine like I was an open book.
"I'm fine. The last contraction passed about 2 minutes ago", I answered.
Seung Jo turned to his mom, "Did you bring newborn baby clothes in the hospital bag?"
"Um… no. I will go back to get them", Geum Hee said hurriedly. She hugged me carefully and wished me luck; then left.
"Dr. Baek! Dr. Baek! You are needed- oh", Seung Jo's assistant nurse looks flustered as she takes in the scene. Hmph. It's that nurse again.
"Can you get another doctor to fill in for me? My wife is in labour", Seung Jo answered coolly. I feel my stomach flutter as he says 'wife'. It feels so surreal now.
We get referred to a room, had a quick check up (the baby is in the right position!), and now we are waiting for the baby.
Seung Jo is sitting on the side of the bed. It's really now, that I realize that once Han Jo is born, everything is going to change. It won't be just us two anymore. It just won't be the same. I feel a shiver run down my body. I don't want anything to change.
"Seung Jo…" I mumbled.
He looks up from his phone immediately.
"I'm scared", my voice slowly progressing to a whisper. To my horror, my eyes brim with tears. His eyes soften as he leans over and gently presses his lips on my forehead.
"After he is born… would things change between us?"
"Stupid," he starts, "Why would anything change between us?"
…
Half an hour later, nothing has happened. I am sucking disdainfully at the straw of my juice box. I downed 3 juice boxes in this half hour. Seung Jo is still browsing on his phone and hasn't said a word. I lean over his shoulder to see what he is looking at. Involuntarily, I gasp.
"S-seung Jo!"
"What?"
"Y-you're looking for houses!"
"Yes, I am", he says nonchalantly.
"B-but, we never spoke about it…"
I slump down on the pillow, not because I am shocked to find Seung Jo browsing houses.
"I was meaning to tell you tonight, but you went into labour", Seung Jo said without looking up from his phone.
"It's happening…" I say.
"Yes, we're moving out of mom's house", he replies, "I guess it really is happening".
"No, no. Not that, Seung Jo. The baby is coming".
Seung Jo's body instantly stiffens.
He pages the midwives. His hands slip into mine slowly.
"Squeeze as hard as it can when it hurts", he says.
Seung Jo
Ha Ni's face scrunches up as little and I feel a little prick in my heart. And for once in my life I feel helpless. Her hands are in fists, clutching the covers as if there's no tomorrow. I slowly slip my hand into hers.
"Squeeze as hard as it can when it hurts", I say.
"But… wouldn't that hurt you?" she says. Trust Ha Ni to be worrying about that right now.
Some midwives rush in. It's time.
A/N: Y I DO SO MANY OOCnesss?!""?Qwr It's actually so hard to write as Seung Jo in this situation, because tbh, I wouldn't know what he'd do. Anyways, only two more chapters to go! Thanks for reading!
