Chapter 10
It was, hot.
The gang had managed to find each other in the sand and find a bar not to far off in the distance, in a small little village. Appa hid under a blanket of sand and Aang told the big guy, not to sneeze. In the bar they had gotten a few drinks and found a middle aged man with a map, a map to a library that would actually end up being really important to the group. They had taken the man and his map back to Appa and flew in search of a "Long Forgotten library", with the histories of
pretty much everything". Or, so the guy with the map had said.
"Are you telling me library may or may not exist?" Toph asked the, New guy. "Why didn't you tell us before?"
"You would not have taken me if I told you that there was a possibility of it not existing." The explorer replied.
Toph sighed and slid onto Appa's back. "Why are we wasting our time t-"
"Because" Aang started. "This library hold's century's of knowledge, knowledge that could give us a hint to-"
"Bring down the Fire Nation." Toph groaned, finishing the Avatar's sentence.
Three hours.
The gang was working in shifts, one would sleep and the rest would keep look out, except for Toph who actually didn't mind. Aang sat next to Toph, resting his arm around her shoulder. "I've really missed you, Toph." He said to her, closing his eyes, to nap. Toph blushed at how 'comfortable' Aang has been around her. Sokka stared at the two and raised an eyebrow. No way Toph and Aang! He thought to himself. He shook his head. No, no way.
Quite a bit of time had passed by and now Toph was staring out from behind Appa's saddle, bored, she came up with an ingenious plan."I found it!" she shouted.
"Where?" Sokka and Katara ask running to where Toph was.
"That's what it will sound like when one of you, finds it." She replied waving a hand in front of her eyes.
"Toph" The siblings complained flopping down onto the saddle.
"What's a tower doing out in the middle of no where?" Aang asked, he had Appa land in front of it.
"That's not a plain tower, see." Sokka who had taken over map duty, as he usually did, held up the picture of the library, pointing to the top of the main ceiling. It had a long spike protruding from it, with a window.
"Guys, look" Katara whispered. A fox holding a scroll stopped in front of them.
"Oh my it must be one of the Knowledge Seekers!" The professor exclaimed watching as the animal defied gravity climbing straight up the side of the spike and disappearing into the window.
"I'll stay here and look after Appa." Toph offered. "You guys, go find out how to stop the Fire Rejects." She laughed at her insult. The group nodded and quickly rushed the opening to the ancient library.
At first I was confused when we ditched our Ostrich-horses in a small sea side village. Until Iroh clarified that Ba Sing Se was across the water. That was when I had realized how big this nation was. Now, I was sitting in the corner of a ship watching Zuko and Iroh, I mean Mushy and Lee talk. It was amusing the way Lee could go from relatively at ease, to angry in approximately, three point five seconds. I sighed "He's a jumbled man." The bowl of 'food' in my hand was nothing but rotten crap. How can anyone eat this? I walked over to Zuko who was complaining. "Look around Uncle, we are not tourist, we are refugee's, I'm sick of eating rotten food and sleeping in the dirt, I'm tired of living like this."
Iroh listened to Zuko complain with a patience that made him nearly a saint in my eyes. I smelled the rotten slop once more before a wave of anger rushed my body and I impulsively dropped the bowl over the side of the railing, watching it hit the small wakes below, then disappear into the dark depths of this worlds mysterious sea's. "Give it a break." I groaned, turning towards Zuko, my elbow leaning on the railing. "You think these people aren't tired of this either, look at the shit they gave us to 'eat', look at how we are thrown onto this shity boat, look at how the guards who patrol, behave, they don't care about anyone. We are all refugees, we are all treated like garbage, do they sleep in the dirt because they want to?"
Iroh and Zuko stared at me with wide eyes, surely taken back by my sudden wave of passion on this topic.
"They do not want to, does that mother want her child to be cold at night, or hungry?" I asked. "No." I shook my head. "There is no use in complaining, something instead, needs to be done."
A guilty look crossed his face as he looked away from me.
"I agree."
The voice came from behind us. We turned to see who or what it was.
"My names Jet." It was a kid, no, a man, a young man around Zuko's age and height, he stepped out from the shadow's of the poorly lit vessel we rode. A long piece of straw stuck out from the corner of his thin mouth. His hair was shaggy and dark brown, but it worked and his pointy brows gave him a crazy and fierce kind of look. He was a bit, attractive. I could feel my cheeks flush. Zuko caught Keana's reaction and glared at this 'Jet' person. But, his focus seemed to hover over Keana.
"These are my Freedom fighters." Jet said, two others stepping out of the shadows. "Smeller-Bee and Longshot."
"Hey" Smeller-Bee nodded. My eye's widened he's a she!
"Hi." I replied, my voice weak. I was feeling guilty, my body reacting one way, my brain the other. The only men I trusted at the moment where Iroh and Zuko, and that was still a bit 'sketchy'. Yet, I found jet almost attractive, enough so that it flustered me. I started to feel horrible, I tried to fight the feeling.
"Hello." Said Zuko, somehow ending up in front of me.
Jet winked at me then looked at Zuko. My heart skipped a beat and I felt nausea roll over me, I hated being winked at, and yet...here I was, blushing. "I hear that the Captain is eating like a king , meanwhile, us refugee's feed off his rotten scraps." He scoffed. "It doesn't seem fair does it." He started grinning madly.
Iroh appeared behind the shaggy haired kid. "What kind of king?"
"The fat, happy, kind." Jet replied.
I watched as Iroh literally had drool drip down the corner of his mouth. I smirked at the old man's reaction. He certainly liked his food.
"I think I know what you're saying." I was destracted by Jet's words, I knew what he meant, an acquisition of sorts. I would do anything at the moment to focus on something else."I'm in."
Jet smirked. "Great, so Lee." He looked at Zuko. "Do you wanna help us liberate some food?"
Zuko threw his bowl over his shoulder and into the dark waters below. "Sure."
I smirked. "This will be fun." I whispered to Zuko who just glared at me. "I don't trust that guy." He told me, in a low whisper. I looked up at the prince. "The enemy of my enemy, is my friend." I followed the Freedom fighters.
Zuko watched Keana walk away, he shook his head. "Who is she?" He wondered.
