Gibbs watched his son sleep. He knew that any minute he would be taken back to prepare for surgery. Tony's condition ended up improving enough to where. They were able to delay the surgery until the next morning. So Gibbs was able to eat dinner and get some sleep before the operation. The night before he underwent a battery of test to confirm that he was physically stable enough to donate a kidney. Doctor Harris was amazed at how healthy he was. At nearly fifty-five Gibbs was in better physical condition than some people in their thirties that the doctor had encountered. He had also met with the hospital psychologist to make sure he was emotionally stable enough for the procedure. Gibbs placed his had hand on Tony's shoulder and looked into his eyes. Tony had been checked every hour for fever or declining condition.

"How is he Jethro?" Ducky asked from the doorway.

"His last exam was about half an hour ago and so far so good." Gibbs explained.

"That's excellent." Ducky replied.

"I hope he is still doing well before we start pre-op. If he is too sick. They can't do the surgery and he could die." Gibbs explained.

"I am sure if he's been fine this long he will be fine in half an hour but Anthony is not what I came here to discuss. I am more interested in knowing that you really are up for this." Ducky explained.

"The hospital shrink said I was stable enough to donate." Gibbs replied.

"I know she did but no therapist on Earth knows you as well as I do." Ducky explained.

"I am up for this. I just want to help my son." Gibbs replied.

"There are a few more things that I would like to discuss with you." Ducky replied.

"What?" Gibbs asked.

"Well first off are you one hundred percent sure that you are ready to give up your job?" Ducky asked.

"YES! DUCK! I AM AND I AM GOD DAMMED SICK OF YOU TRYING TO TALK ME OUT OF IT! I AM GOING TO BE TOO FUCKING OLD FOR THE JOB IN A FEW GOD DAMMED MONTHS ANYWAY! I AM NOT GOING TO WATCH MY SON DIE! SO I CAN GO IN THE FIELD FOR ANOTHER FOUR FREAKING MONTHS! GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS AND REALIZE THAT THIS IS MY FUCKING DECISION AND NOT YOURS! I AM FUCKING DOING IT! GET OVER IT AND ACCEPT IT!" Gibbs snapped.

"Well I guess I am behind you one hundred percent then." Ducky replied taken aback. He had never heard Jethro yell like that outside of interrogation.

"I am glad we have an understanding." Gibbs replied.

"Just know that you are putting your own life in danger and for the sake of your family especially Anthony. I just want to be sure that you are one hundred and ten percent committed to giving Anthony your kidney." Ducky explained.

"Trust me Duck I am committed one hundred and twenty percent. Tony has a lot ahead of him and well I've lived my life." Gibbs replied.

"Well then best of luck to you," Ducky replied smiling.

"Bss?" Tony asked groggily.

"I'm right here Tony." Gibbs replied.

"Nt sre 'm ging t mke t." Tony grumbled.

"Yes you are." Gibbs assured.

"kled kd dsrve t de." Tony replied.

"Tony you didn't kill a kid. The psycho bitch who targeted her. For the sole purpose of getting back together with her dad killed her. You made a mistake and it had tragic consequences." Gibbs assured.

"Wy sde hrt?" Tony asked.

"You took a really hard hit to your side and because of internal bleeding. They had to remove your left kidney and spleen." Gibbs explained.

"Wll b k?" Tony asked.

"Yes unfortunately your right kidney is failing. That stupid plague you had picked the worst possible time to rear its ugly head. You are going to be fine." Gibbs explained.

"Snds lke dyin." Tony replied.

"You are going to be fine they are giving you a transplant." Gibbs replied.

"Grt smby ese ded." Tony sighed.

"No Tony it is a living donor. Somebody who cares very deeply about you and needs you." Gibbs explained.

"Wo?" Tony asked.

"Me I am giving you my kidney." Gibbs replied.

"Cnt d tht bss." Tony replied.

"I am doing it. You are my son and mean the world to me." Gibbs replied.

"bt u cnt fld anmre." Tony said.

"Tony I am going to be at retirement age in November anyway. I can and will retire four months early for you." Gibbs replied.

"'m nt wth t." Tony mumbled before falling back asleep.

"Yes you are. This is the only way I will be able to live with myself again." Gibbs whispered kissing Tony on the forehead.

"Jethro may I speak with you in the hallway?" Ducky asked quietly.

"Yeah sure." Gibbs replied.

"What do you need to talk to me about Duck?" Gibbs asked.

"There is something else you need to know about Anthony's transplant." Ducky replied.

"The doctors told me everything and I am doing it!" Gibbs barked.

"This is not about you. This is about Anthony." Ducky replied.

"What?" Gibbs asked face draining of color.

"You aren't the only one who can no longer go into the field." Ducky informed him.

"But Tony still has two kidney's." Gibbs tried to argue.

"Yes but only one of them is functional." Ducky replied.

"Oh yeah." Gibbs whispered.

"The good news is that once Anthony recovers there is no reason that he cannot take another position at NCIS. Same with you. I know that you would both despise desk jobs and with you not having a college degree I am not sure you could take a professional support staff position. Anthony probably could though if he wanted to since he has a criminology degree. However I think the best position for both of you would be training agents at FLETC." Ducky explained.

"OK" Gibbs replied.

"Agent Gibbs we are ready for you." Dr. Goldman said exiting Tony's room.

Gibbs nodded and followed the doctor down the hall. His and Tony's lives were about to change forever. He would be back on his feet in no time but Tony had a long and painful road ahead of him. Ducky watched his friend walk away and prayed that both him and Anthony came out strong.
