Worries

xox

Mercedes didn't understand where the excitement has gone. When she first found out she was pregnant, she could hardly contain herself, and neither could Sam. They'd been trying for so long, and now they were finally getting what they wanted. Finally starting the family she and Sam always dreamed of. Everything was perfect. Their family and friends are beyond exicted

So what's wrong?

It started with a few sleepless nights here and there. Mercedes lay awake running over and over in her head all the things that could go wrong with the pregnancy and the delivery. She would work herself up until she was convinced that the baby wasn't going to survive the pregnancy. And even if it did, what about all the things that could go wrong in infancy?

And oh god, what about SIDS?

Mercedes didn't tell Sam at first. She didn't want him to worry. But when he started to notice her sleeping fitfully night after night, and the dark bags under her eyes, and her decreasing enthusiasm, she had to explain.

Now she was cooking dinner for Sam at home, waiting for him to get back from his meeting with his editor. She was reading a pregnancy book that tells you everything to expect while you're expecting. It all seemed harmless and like it will run smoothly, every little warning sets her stomach in knots.

Sam arrived home right as Mercedes finished the main course for dinner. "Hey babe!" he said, grinning from ear to ear. He walked over to her and kissed her temple before giving her a big hug.

"You have to see what I bought today. I saw it in this shop window on my way home and had to buy it. You know how we've been trying to figure out how to decorate the nursery? Well you're just gonna know when you see this. It's perfect."

Mercedes smiled at his enthusiasm and tried to muster the energy to be as excited as he is.

"Show me in a minute, okay? I've got to finish up dinner. Are you hungry?"

"Starving. How was your day?" he asked as he set his backpack against the table before sitting down.

"It was alright," she said absentmindedly as began serving Sam his dinner "I've been reading that book," She pointed to the book that was on the counter.

"Learning anything new?" He asked.

"Um, yeah a bit," She said, avoiding the topic of things to avoid as they could lead to stillbirths that popped into her head. She didn't want Sam to see her get worked up, it would ruin his good mood.

"What do you have to show me?" She asks.

"Oh yeah!" he says, bouncing up and grabbing his backpack. He pulled out a large stuffed Winnie the Pooh and sets it on the table. "Isn't it perfect?! We both loved Winnie the Pooh as kids. It only makes sense that our kid will too. And if we decorate the nursery with that theme, then it doesn't matter if we have a boy or a girl. It will work either way! We could paint the room light blue like the sky, With little clouds and everything and even decorate it with stuffed animals of all the characters!" He could barely contain his excitement, and it's adorable, but she just didn't seem to get through her fears to share his feelings.

"That's a great idea, Sam. It really is perfect," she smiled, trying to mask her mixed bag of emotions.

But they've together too long for that to work, "What is it, babe?" he asked, setting the Pooh Bear aside and grabbing her hands. "Have you been, you know, thinking again?"

Mercedes chuckled at his choice of words, but she knew what he meant. "No, no, I'm fine."

Sam brushed a stray hair from Mercedes' face and looked her straight in the eyes so she can't avoid his gaze, "Don't lie to me, Mercedes. I'm your husband. I can see right through that."

"Okay," She sighed. "It's just, I was reading that book, and it has all of these warnings of what you shouldn't do when you're pregnant and I did some of the stuff before I knew I was pregnant and they say it could lead to-" She would have continued rambling without noticing the increase in her breath or the tears streaming down her face if Sam hadn't stopped her.

"Mercedes..Cedes..Babe. Shhh. Calm down," He said, getting up out of his chair wrapping his arms around her. "You can't keep doing this to yourself." He pulled away to look at her and brushed away some of the tears from her eyes. She could see the worry in his face and it tears her up inside.

"I'm sorry," She said, more tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Didn't apologize, honey," he said, kissing the top of her head. "Just listen to me. If anything was going wrong, we would know. We were just at the doctors a few days ago, and you have another checkup next week. Leave the medical stuff up to the doctors. Stop trying to diagnose yourself or figure out everything that could be wrong. That's never healthy. Plus I know that everything is perfect in there," he said as he placed his hand on her belly.

Mercedes wrapped her arms around her husband and burrowed her face in his chest, "I love you so much."

"I love you too, Mercedes. Just, try to relax. You're worrying me."

Mercedes nodded finally wiping the tears from her eyes and smiled up at him, "I know. I will." She said, looking at the stuffed Winnie the Pooh on the table, and for once, she felt like it was true. She finally felt at peace, and more excited for this baby than she had been in a long time.
