A/N Just changed a couple things for continuity
Hopefully you guys like this! Part 2 of my 3 chapter arc thing! Yay!
This chapter is a bit more angsty and contains mature content. Just a small warning :)
Title from the song 'With Me' by Sum 41
I'm thinking I might stick with the lyrics as titles, and maybe go back and change the other chapters. Just a personal preference of mine haha :)
With Everything I Won't Let This Go
Rhett set Scarlett down on a chair that had been placed outside Bonnie's room. He could see the exhaustion that had been etched on her face, and he narrowed it down to sheer force of will as the reason she was not currently an unconscious heap on the floor.
It was two hours before Doctor Meade emerged; he was sweating and dishevelled but had an uplifting look of relief on his kind face. He stood before him Scarlett leaning ever so slightly against him,
"She is out of danger." Rhett's whole body loosened with relief and gratitude and beside him he felt Scarlett collapse beside him, instinctively he caught her and cradled her in his arms. Doctor Mead immediately went into action, ushering Rhett into her room and placing her on the bed with orders for bed rest for another week. Rhett agreed dismissively eager for more news of Bonnie.
"As I said she is out of danger. She has a broken wrist and a concussion, she is sedated now, but I would have one of your servants check on her every few hours. I have made sure there is no bleeding of the brain, and there seem to be no internal injuries. Your daughter is incredibly lucky Mister Butler. I will be back tomorrow too check on her and will visit regularly." Rhett nodded,
"You have my eternal gratitude Doctor Meade." He waved it off dismissively, slightly uncomfortable with the forwardness of the man.
"Yes well, make sure that Scarlett remains on bed rest. I mean it; she can not handle so much strenuous activity. Good day Mister Butler." He tipped his head and walked out leaving Rhett alone in Scarlett's bedroom.
He walked over to Scarlett's prone form and pressed a kiss to her forehead before heading to Bonnie's room.
Scarlett woke up in the darkness of her room. She couldn't remember how she got there, but knew that Rhett would have had something to do with it. Slowly, she got up from her place in the bed, tightened a wrapper around her and made her way to Bonnie's room. She entered to see Rhett sitting beside her daughters prone form. He looked to be sobbing softly, and Scarlett longed to reach out and touch him, to comfort him.
"Rhett?" She called softly walking toward the man; he looked back at her. His eyes were bloodshot, and his clothes and hair disheveled.
"Scarlett! You should be in bed." She hushed him and kneeled down next to him,
"I couldn't possibly be sleeping knowing you are here." Rhett hung his head, and Scarlett touched his cheek. He was almost startled by the tender gesture, but after a moment raised his own hand to press it against hers.
They sat in silence for a time taking comfort in each other, before Rhett suddenly was crying again.
"Rhett what is it? What's wrong." He wouldn't answer instead he sat there silent tears trialing down his tanned face. Scarlett scrambled to the front of him grasping his head in her hands and forcing him to look at her. She almost dropped it in shock. Rhett looked old. She had always known that he was not as young as he looked, but at this moment she could see the age etched into him. It was in his skin; his eyes and she could see the small shocks of grey in his moustache and hair. "Rhett, please tell me."
Then just as suddenly as he had begun to cry he began to laugh. It was hollow and dark and Scarlett grew scared by it. Oh Lord! She thought in dread, he's lost his mind! She was shaking him gently now urging him to snap out of his lunacy. "Rhett Butler I swear if you have gone mad I will-"
"I haven't gone mad my dear. I have simply realized that I have killed one of my children, almost killed another and almost caused the death of my wife. It's a startling revelation to learn that you seem to have a subconscious need to destroy anything you care about." Scarlett was stunned for a moment, before cracking her hand across his face.
"This is not your fault. None of it is."
"Whatever you may delude yourself with-" his cheek burned again,
"It. Is. Not. Your. Fault." She hissed jerking his head to look at her, "what happened to Bonnie was her own fault, she would not listen. She never listens."
"Because I spoil her. See the root of the problem is me." She slapped him again, gentler this time, but the sharp sting still reverberated through him. "I would appreciate it if you would stop hitting me."
"Not until you admit that nothing was your fault."
"I won't" She made a move to hit him again, but Rhett caught her, and bore his eyes into hers.
"Don't you see I can't. I am filled with guilt, every time I look at you, see how frail and sick you are I feel sick, and all I can think is that I have done that to you. I should be looking at you, and you should be carrying a child, our child. All I can see and hear every time I close my eyes is your scream when you fell, or all the blood that pooled around you. I can't say it's not my fault, because if I do there is no one else to blame!" He buried his face again, and Scarlett could not stop the tears that began to pour from her eyes.
Rhett wasn't sure what had come over him. Perhaps he was going mad. He hadn't meant to burden Scarlett with this; he hadn't meant to reveal his deep guilt. He heard Scarlett stand and could not help but feel grateful that she was leaving. Instead of leaving, however, he felt her move to his lap and placed her hand under his chin. He raised his head and saw that she was crying too, guilt washed over him again, and he moved to turn away, she refused. She leant into him and kissed his cheek softly before wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him into her. After a moment, he encircled her tiny frame inhaling her scent and softly pressing kisses of thanks into her hair.
"Scarlett darling, you should go get some rest."
"I think you should too."
"I must stay here and-" She pressed a finger to his lip,
"You must rest. I will not have you looking so haggard for the children tomorrow."
"Scarlett-" She shushed him again,
"Please Rhett, I am tired and wish to go to bed with my husband." He nodded mutely, and she stood from his lap before allowing him to lead her to her bedroom. He hovered at the door, faintly aware of the promise he had made her, stating in no uncertain terms that he would not return to her bed until she met his terms, at this present time, however, he did not seem to care.
Scarlett took his hand and led him in, noticing his hesitation she prayed to God that he would not suddenly decide to keep his promise of never returning to her."It's all right Rhett; I want you to come in." Rhett looked at her raising his eyebrow. She walked over to the chaise before gently removing her wrapper, Rhett felt his arousal heighten and berated himself for his weakness. She turned, noticing that he was still rooted in his spot just inside the door she walked to him. She moved toward him before closing the door gently and smiling slyly. Rhett was sure she was aware of the effect she had on him, and it vexed him that she could be so naive but so brazen all at once. It also excited him. She brushed past him letting her hair cascade down her back in raven waves, that was his last straw.
Rhett grabbed her before pushing her back against the wall
"Do you have any idea what you do to me Scarlett?" he whispered huskily in her ear. "Do you?" She shook her head, a deep feeling of excitement growing in her belly. "You make me weak" he grumbled pressing rough kisses along her shoulder, Scarlett clawed at his vest clumsily unbuttoning it while Rhett pushed the shoulders of her nightgown down, a brief wish that she was wearing something slightly more alluring flashed through her mind, but vanished when Rhett softly grazed his teeth along her collarbone while clutching her chest. A soft moan of pleasure passed through her lips, and she pushed herself into him.
"Rhett, please…" She wasn't sure what she was asking for, but Rhett did not seem willing to comply. His hands were roaming up and down the flat panes of her body, scrunching the thin material of her nightgown with each touch. Rhett trailed kisses up her shoulder along her neck and face before he stopped at her lips and took a step back.
"I can't Scarlett." Scarlett stared at him in shock, "you aren't well, you aren't thinking clearly, I won't take advantage of you again."
"You aren't… How could you.." her mind was a muddled mess, hazed with her desire for him. He moved to leave and Scarlett panicked, this was her one chance at having him back. "Rhett wait, please" he paused at the door handle, "I want this, I want you." She slid her nightgown off and stood there completely exposed. He turned around, and his expression became bewildered as he began scrutinising her. Scarlett began regretting her decision. She was too thin she knew, and she was still acutely aware of some persistent bruises that peppered her ribcage. She started to squirm under his gaze, she wanted to pick up her nightgown and bury herself in it. He was going to reject her, laugh at her and leave her. His mouth opened, and she waited holding her breath.
Rhett stalked toward her before grabbing her arms roughly,
"God you're beautiful." He growled pressing his lips to hers. Scarlett reacted enthusiastically quickly un-tucking his shirt before helping him out of it. Scarlett stopped and stared in awe at his chest. It was broad and tanned with black hair scattered across it. Scarlett outlined the scar on his abdomen with something akin to childlike awe, and Rhett felt himself smile as the scar began to tingle under her touch, he grasped her hand and claimed her lips again, feeling them bruise from his relentless assault. Scarlett's small hands began to maneuver his trousers, her fingers clumsily untying them in a frazzled desperation. Once he had discarded them Rhett picked her up and felt her wrap her legs around him, desperate for her Rhett charged to the bed and felt only gladness in the hours that followed.
So I couldn't actually bring myself to kill Bonnie. It was the only thing in this story I was completely unsure about. In the end I decided I really didn't want to have to write like a minimum 3 chapters trying to deal with the death and everything so I just kept her around. Even though I find her to be annoying. But anyways Bonnie lives... yayyy...
The slaps were fun to write. I've always wanted to slap the sense into Rhett so here I have Scarlett doing it for me!
Hopefully Rhett isn't too OOC. I'm using that scene from the movie where Rhett's all totally like 'I killed her' after the fall, and taking my interpretation of his emotions from there. That and his descriptions in the book. So Yeah.
It's been really easy for me to be writing this part. Often I have a couple of setbacks while writing but this part is just flowing, so there might be another chapter within the next day or two. Maybe even in a few hours, since it's like late afternoon here in Oz.
Reviews are always enjoyed :)
