I was out in the park until almost midnight. Robin was nowhere to be found. I started to fall asleep on the grass until I heard footsteps heading my way.
"Think she's drunk or somethin'?"
"I dunno. Ain't that Rex's friend?"
"Boss'll be mad if we do anythin' to her. Should we take her back to him?"
I looked up at the two, beefy men. They were dressed in thick, course pants that would probably never rip with clown makeup.
"Go away. I'm not drunk. I'm waiting for a friend." I grumbled. "What are a couple of thugs of Joker's doing here anyway?"
"We just got off work." They said in unison.
"Great. Go be off work somewhere else." I muttered.
"Sheesh, you try and take care of the lady and look what happens." One said.
"No, wait, I'm sorry." I sat up. "I've just had a rough day and my friend is running sorta late."
"Wanna tell us about it?" One offered.
"Thanks… But nah. You guys go home. It's late. Go be with your families." I smiled at them. They were the nicest people I had met all day.
"If you need us, you just come a callin'."
"Yeah, any kid o' Joker's is good on our terms."
I knew they were only doing this because there was a chance they could get promoted or something. But a kind word was a kind word. A kind offer was a kind offer. I watched them leave and felt much better than I had.
I laid back and wondered if I should stay there and wait a bit more or leave. I didn't wait much longer.
Robin ran up to me, huffing and puffing, out of breath.
"What happen to you?" I looked up at him. He was hunched over, hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath.
"On patrol all night." He managed. "Sorry for being late. I came as fast as I could."
I sat up. "Sit your butt down before you stroke out."
He nearly collapsed on the grass.
"So, I'm harmless, huh?" I smirked.
"How did… He went to see you."
"Broad daylight. Never heard of Batsy chilling out, following people in broad daylight. I thought your work went at night, with all the criminals." I shrugged.
Robin cussed under his breath. "Yeah. I tried to convince him that you were harmless, but…"
"He doesn't believe either of us."
"You threw a car. And from his ranting today, you almost pulled a kid through a chain link fence."
"He insulted my mother." I thought about the incident and frowned.
"That isn't an excuse."
"Quit being a goody goody, I wasn't gonna hurt him." I muttered. "I just wanted to scare him."
"Well, you did. Batman said that kid had a mental breakdown."
"Good." I snorted.
"If you're a supervillain, you're a weird one, that's for sure." He watched me. "You really aren't into hurting people."
I got quiet.
"Something wrong? You tend to make snarky remarks when I say things like that." He scooted closer to me.
"Today, Batman told me I should check myself in to Arkham." I swallowed dryly. "And my friends—or, they used to be my friends—looked at me like I was a monster. They called Rex a freak and Harley a dumb blonde and the Joker… Well, they were right about Joker, but… And the day before, before I met you, I watched Penguin shoot a girl. Because she didn't bring me a glass of water. I didn't even want a glass of water." I curled in on myself, bringing my legs to my chest.
"I…"
"I don't know if I can handle living like this. Having Gotham's criminals at my doorstep worrying about me but also being, well, criminals and killing people." I tightened my scarf a little more. "I can't even walk around without people looking at me like I should die unless I cover myself up."
"I don't know about any of that." He began rubbing my back. "But I know what it's like to run around wearing a mask."
I looked up at him and he grinned. I laughed in spite of myself.
"I'm sorry you've had to see what you've seen. And I'm sorry your friends are assholes. And I'm sorry that… Um… People can be cruel?" He was running out of things to apologize for and he didn't even need to be apologizing.
"There are only a few select people in the world that can stand the sight of me." I leaned into his arm as it wrapped around me. "And all of them are nuts."
"I'm nuts, am I?" He laughed.
"You've got to be. You should check yourself into Arkham first. Then will follow my dad and his boyfriend. All of y'all are crazier than Joker or Harley." I muttered.
"Let's go then. I'll check myself in right now. You can watch. They'll tell you I'm not crazy." He smiled.
"Let's not go that far. They might think you mean to check in me instead of you." I giggled nervously, hoping he wasn't serious.
"Then I guess you'll just have to take it from me that I am perfectly sane."
"You run around in a cape and rubber suit and fight crime." I pointed out.
"It's not rubber." He frowned. "It's made up of a highly flexible, bullet proof—"
"I don't need the specifications of your dress, princess." I laughed.
He rolled his eyes. "Well it's cool. My outfit is cool. I look cool. Right?"
"So cool, Robin. So cool. Just add some ladder shades."
"Okay, okay." He grinned. "Enough bashing on my suit."
"So does Batman know you're here?" I looked around.
"Probably. That old man knows everything." He muttered. "Not a lick of privacy."
"That sucks." I nodded. That was my life for the last year, I realized.
"It's not so bad. Cool gear, fighting crime." He pulled out a small, thin cylinder, 'bout as big around as a quarter and maybe six inches long. He seemed to be fond of it. "I think I made a good decision."
"I think so too."
"Why's that?" He played with the cylinder absentmindedly.
"Because if you weren't Robin, who knows what kind of fruit loop could be watching me right now."
"Like Batman over there?" He barely motioned to a building about a hundred yards from where we were.
Yuck, he was watching us.
"Exactly." I glowered at the building, not knowing where he was but hoping that my death gaze was reaching him.
Robin's arm squeezed me gently. Or tightly, I didn't know, but it felt gentle to me. Everything about my senses had been messed up since the accident.
"Sorry for being late earlier." Robin said. "I, uh, hope it doesn't mean that I don't get a second date."
"Hm, well, I have to look at my schedule and see." I glanced at my nails as though I had a lot going on.
"Oh, well, if you're busy…" He scratched his head awkwardly.
Huh, awkward Robin was kinda cute.
"Robin, I have no plans for the rest of my life. I look like a shark, remember?" I rolled my eyes.
"Oh! So, tomorrow okay with you?" He asked eagerly.
"Sure, same place?"
"Yeah. Probably a similar time, unless I can GET OUT OF PATROL EARLY." He raised his voice so Batman would hear. Not that Batsy reacted or anything. "I need to get some sleep."
"Yeah, me too…" I found that I didn't want to go to sleep.
"How about tomorrow we go somewhere? Maybe like out to eat?" He offered.
"S-sure." I smiled shyly.
"Okay. Just be here tomorrow and I'll come pick you up. We can take my bike." He grinned.
"Bike?"
"Yeah." He stood and helped me to my feet. "It goes blindingly fast, just you wait!"
"Night, Robin." I clasped my hands together.
"Night, Harmony." He gave me a small wave before running off toward the building where Batman was no doubt scowling at me.
