'ello, peoples of the earth!
So, this is the last chapter of Style. I must confess, I'm doing a victory dance after I post this. I didn't think I would see the day I would mark it complete! (Actually, that's an exaggeration. But it's not that far off from being true.)
And, for the last time, I get to thank CaylithTheGolden, Zenkid100, Lux's Sister, and katierosefun for reviewing this story. As usual, you guys are awesome sauce. :)
At last, I now present Chapter 10 of Style. Hope y'all enjoy!
"What's taking them so long?" Caleb groaned. He threw his head against the back of his chair. "We should be on the shuttle by now!"
Kira rolled her eyes. "For the last time, we need to be patient. Master Unduli said she'd come get us when she and Master Billaba are finished on the bridge, remember? Really, Caleb, it hasn't been that long."
"But I'm bored."
"Then read one of the datapads over there."
Caleb raised an eyebrow. "No. You know I hate reading."
That was another thing about Caleb Kira had never understood. Honestly, she didn't know why anyone at all would hate reading. Still, she should've known that her suggestion would get that kind of reaction from him, so she tried again. "We could find somewhere to spar."
This time, Caleb smirked. "Nice try, Kiki, but you're not to use your arm, remember? Medic's orders."
"It was worth a shot."
The Padawans lapsed back into silence. Kira went back to the file about the native flora of Felucia on the datapad she was reading. She liked that this file included pictures, as she had not yet been to the planet famous for its colorful jungles.
Caleb stood up so fast his chair tipped over. It clanged to the floor loudly, and Kira looked up from her datapad. "Caleb, I get that you're bored, but could you please try to stay quiet? I'm trying to read."
By this time, Caleb was standing near the window, looking out at the debris left over from the battle. Kira followed his gaze. The Fist floated in orbit not far from the Tranquility, and she couldn't help but notice that there were parts of the ship that had been damaged in the battle. She could imagine Obi-Wan standing on the bridge, perhaps watching the cleanup efforts or speaking to Cody about how to proceed with whatever new orders they'd been given, orders that Kira was looking forward to helping carry out.
"You're not reading."
Caleb's voice startled Kira out of her thoughts. Sighing, she laid the datapad aside. "No, I'm not," she said.
"Then what are you thinking about?"
"Whoever said I was thinking?"
Kira could practically hear the smirk in Caleb's voice. "The Force shifts when you're thinking really hard about something. So what are you thinking about?"
Kira raised an eye marking, surprised Caleb had been able to read her so easily. "You're not the only impatient one around here," she admitted. "I'm as anxious to see my Master as you are to get back to the Fist."
Caleb turned from the window. "Yeah?"
Kira nodded. "He's like a father to me."
Caleb didn't make a smart remark like Kira had been certain he would. Instead, he sat beside her on the cot. "I can't say Master Depa's like a mother," he said. "More like a crazy aunt."
Kira giggled. "I don't think Master Billaba's crazy," she remarked. "You're more crazy than she is. At least she thinks before she acts."
In response, Caleb whacked Kira on the arm. She retaliated in kind, and soon the two Padawans were playfully fighting each other. Kira almost fell off the cot because she was giggling so much, especially when Caleb started to tickle her.
Which is why both Padawans' hair and clothes were rumpled when the door slid open to admit Luminara and Depa. Caleb was first to see their company, and he sat up so suddenly that Kira fell off the cot with a loud, startled shriek. "Hello, Masters!" he said, pretending Kira wasn't on the floor right behind him.
Depa looked as if she was trying not to laugh as Kira regained her composure and stood up from the floor, clearing her throat to keep from giggling at the situation. "Masters," she said with a bow.
Luminara's eyes twinkled with mirth, though she kept a straight face. "If you two are quite finished, there is a shuttle waiting in the hangar bay to transport you and Master Billaba to the Fist," she said in a soft, lilting voice. "Master Kenobi is anxiously awaiting your arrival."
"But you may wish to straighten up first," Depa added.
Kira blushed, suddenly finding the floor very interesting. "Yes, Masters."
"Meet me in the hangar when you're finished," Depa said. "I'll wait for you near our transport."
"We'll be there soon, Master Depa," Caleb replied.
As soon as the two women left, Kira looked up to see Caleb grinning teasingly at her. "What? You're acting like you're embarrassed to be seen with me."
"Because right now, I am," Kira said. She walked past Caleb to the refresher. "Let's just get ready to go. I don't want to keep Master Billaba waiting."
The hangar bay on the Fist wasn't much different from the hangar bay on the Tranquility - both were large rooms built out of cold, gray steel filled with clones going about their duties. However, to Kira, it felt like a whole different place, especially when she spotted Obi-Wan and Cody waiting near the landing zone to greet them.
"Well, look who decided to show up!" Cody teased loudly as the Jedi stepped off the shuttle.
"Good to see you, too, Cody," Kira said, grinning. She brushed a stray hair from her braid behind her ear. "I couldn't leave the men to have all the fun, could I?"
"Of course not," Cody said. "Welcome back, Commander."
Obi-Wan spoke up. "It's good to see you safe, Kira," he said. "I heard you had quite the adventure."
"And what an adventure it was! But it's good to be home," Kira replied.
"Yes, home is where we'll be heading next. Master Unduli's troops will be handling the cleanup this time, so you will have some time to recover from your ordeal." Obi-Wan smiled. "I trust you learned some things, my young apprentice?"
"Yes, Master," Kira said. She couldn't help smirking. "Never let Caleb make a fire by himself."
"I heard that!" Caleb interrupted. "And that only happened once, and it wasn't even my fault!"
"Then explain how that fire got out of control if you didn't do anything to it, because there was no wind to blame!"
Obi-Wan shook his head as the two teenagers launched into yet another argument. Depa, who stood beside him, sighed. "Your turn to take care of them, Master Kenobi," she said, jutting her thumb out at the arguing Padawans.
"Oh, Master Billaba, I couldn't possibly deprive you of their pleasant company," Obi-Wan replied.
"Ah, but you would be doing no such thing."
In front of the Masters, the Padawans were still going at it. "You know, you're not doing very well for a girl who's going to be the next Negotiator," Caleb remarked.
"For the last time, I hate politics, and I'm not going to be a negotiator!" Kira protested a little louder than was appropriate, her hands on her hips in what she hoped was a slightly intimidating manner.
"Right now, neither of you are negotiating very well," Depa said, at last stepping in and separating the Padawans. "Perhaps you two should take a break from each other for a while."
"Yes, I believe that sounds like a plan." Obi-Wan stepped forward and placed a hand on Kira's shoulder. "I assume we will see you again when we land on Coruscant?"
"Of course you will, Master Kenobi." Her hand firmly on Caleb's shoulder, Depa guided him out of the hangar bay.
Kira sheepishly glanced up at Obi-Wan. "I suppose I still need to learn not to provoke Caleb, too? "
"Oh, yes," Obi-Wan replied. "It's easy to do, isn't it?"
"Very, Master!"
Obi-Wan offered a small smile. "I know it's hard to ignore, Padawan, but sometimes the best solution is simply to walk away. Now, I believe the Admiral is waiting on the bridge. Care to join me or would you prefer to get some rest?"
Kira grinned. "I'll be right behind you, Master."
A lighthearted end for this story, but I can't promise a similiar ending for the next. After all, the next one will cover Order 66! (Caroline, don't you even THINK about putting the title in your review!)
Kira: Again, I hate that foreshadowing poodoo.
Me: And again, you hate everything I do. Have you packed everything yet?
Kira: No. Caleb hid my toothbrush.
Me: Sorry, everyone. I'm going on a desperately needed week-long vacation tomorrow, and SOME people didn't bother to pack until the last minute. -_-
Kira: It's not my fault!
Me: Yes it is. CALEB! Get in here!
Caleb: WHAT!?
Me: Go get Kira's toothbrush. NOW.
Caleb: But I don't want to!
Me: DO IT.
Caleb: *sighs* Fiiiiiiine.
Me: Kira, would you like to pick some music?
Kira: Yes, please! :D
Tablet: And they'll tell you now you're the lucky one, but can you tell me now you're the lucky one...
Me: Well, guys, I'll see y'all next time! Be sure to keep a lookout for the next story in the Eyes Open Saga (yup, that's what we're calling it now!), as I will be posting it next Monday! Oh, and keep the tissues nearby in later chapters, especially if you've read katierosefun's Begin Again series.
Kira: Wait, what's gonna happen? Is Cadena involved!?
Me: Girly, you have no idea.
Caleb: Here's the toothbrush.
Kira: At last! Now I can finish up!
Me: Anyway, we'll see y'all next Monday, and don't forget to review if you liked it, hated it, or wanted to light it up and watch it burn! Guys?
All: THANKS FOR CLICKING IN AND MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU! :)
