Chapter ten
JPOV
"Okay, on one condition" I tell her; my mind already set on keeping her away from her former drug addiction. She went through rehab once and I don't want her addicted again.
The phone call Felix made to me was the one that made me realize that I had to save Isa from herself. These emotions I have for Isa are new to me, but I want to embrace it. I want to protect Isa from every danger in this cruel world.
"And what is the condition?"
"You give me the drugs that you bought today, and you stop using."
I hear her gasp.
"That's blackmail," she says. "Angela is a person who needs help, and with this…"
"I also want to help you, Isa." I interrupt her. "You became addicted because of your ex."
"So," she whines. "It's my life and body."
"That's true, but I lo…" I stop, almost saying that I love her. Do I love her? Yes, I do. I love the way she smiles and how it reaches her eyes. The way she acts to protect someone, showing how good her heart is.
"Yes?" she urges, making me realize that she's waiting for me.
"I like you, and I care about you. We made promises to each other and I'm trying to keep mine."
There was a small pause before she finally answered.
"I can't promise what you want, but I can always try," she says. "I will try."
I hear the hesitation, but also a small promise.
"I will see you home," I tell her. "We need to talk, but first I have to take care of business with Felix and Demetri."
"Okay," she mumbles, and I barely hear her. "I'm going to tell Ca-… Dr. Cullen that Angela can come and stay with us. Goodbye." I hear her slip, but I'm not sure what to make of it. So I choose to ignore it.
"Okay, goodbye."
I hang up and walk around the hallways above the restaurant. Every room looks like a brothel. Most of them were painted in dark colors, with a small hint of dark red in each and one. The room I was currently looking at had black walls and red curtains.
I sigh.
"Boss." Demetri's voice comes from bellow, so I leave and make my way downstairs, closing the door behind me. I'm hoping we can solve this problem.
I can't believe that I let Alice go, but I have a feeling that I can use her. She has more information she isn't telling me.
She had set up a whole prostitute circle behind my back and got away with it. I had to find out exactly how long this had been going on.
"There you are." Demetri looks worried when I enter the dining room. "What's going on?"
"A lot," I respond. "Alice is fired, but I need someone to eye her closely."
I start explain the events of the past couple of hours. I find myself becoming sick of everything. Yeah, sick. Even if I'm a mob boss, that doesn't mean I kidnap young girls to sell them to customers. The other side that makes me sick is the fact that Alice could pull this off behind my back.
My father would be turning in to his grave if he knew that one of my employees betrayed the family.
"Shit," Demetri mumbles. "What are you going to do?"
"Find who's behind this all. I still can't believe Alice initiated this. The money she transferred has to go to somebody. I already ordered Jacob to find more about the account."
"What do you want me to do, Boss?" Demetri asks.
"Wait," I answer. "Felix and you are going to follow Alice. She will make a mistake, and you will be there to witness it.
Demetri nods and I turn to leave. "I'm going home. Close the restaurant. Izzy is going to renovate everything before re-opening it."
I open the restaurant door, but then turn and address Demetri again.
"Afterwards, come to my place. I want to discuss our plans."
He nods and walks to the back.
"Oh, and Demetri." He stops and looks at me. "All of the rooms upstairs need to be destroyed. We could make apartments out of them or something. Anything to hide it."
I close the door and make my way to my car.
LGOR
I don't know how long I sat in the living room, but I jump when I hear a door opening. Charlotte walks into the living room with a laundry basket in her hands.
"Oh, it's you", I say disappointed that it isn't Isa.
"It's great to see you too," she smiles. "Though I think you weren't expecting me."
"I thought Isa came home," I answer truthfully.
Charlotte smiles knowingly, before walking to the stairs.
"Charlotte," I call. She stops walking and turns around. "I'm expecting an extra guest. Can you prepare another room?"
"Of course," she says. "Who are we expecting?"
"A girl," I answer. "Angela."
I stay vague with information, until I have all the information myself.
My cell rings and I pick up. "Yes," I answer without look at the ID.
"Boss," Felix greets me professionally. "We are leaving the hospital. Do I bring them to the restaurant or your place?"
"My place," I order him. "We'll have the meeting in this office."
I hang up and see that Charlotte is still standing at the bottom of the stairs. "They're on their way home, I suspect," she states.
I simply nod. She turns around and walks upstairs.
I run my hands through my hair, sighing before sitting back down on the sofa. I don't know how long I can keep these feelings at bay. I'm starting to realize that I don't merely like Isabella Matthews, I love her.
The fact that I'm a Mob boss is the reason that I'm not pursuing her. I have to be honest with her, but I'm afraid that once I tell her what my real job is she will run away, and that's something I can't handle.
I close my eyes and picture a future with Isa. I must have been tired because the next thing I know I'm being woken up to the sound of the front door opening and voices entering the house.
I jump up and walk toward them. Isa, Angela, and Felix are walking in.
"Isa," I greet her curtly. Not wanting to give anything away. I hold my hand out to her, indicating that I want something. Her eyes grow big, but she goes into her bag and takes something out.
I know she's scared of Angela's reaction, but she also sees that I'm not giving in. She has to give me the drugs; that was part of the deal.
She puts the little bag in my hand. "Happy?" she yells, before storming passed us and up the stairs.
Angela's eyes widen when she sees what is put in my hand. "Is that…?"
"Angela," I ignore her question. "I will send someone to show you your room. Do you have anything with you?"
"The only clothes I have are the uniforms."
Understanding, I nod. "Tomorrow you can go shopping. There will be somebody going with you."
She gives me a small smile. I turn around and see that Charlotte is coming down the stairs.
"Jasper, the guestroom is ready," she says with a smile.
"Great, can you show Angela around?" I request, looking at Angela. "Angela, this is Charlotte, my cook, but also the housekeeper. If you need anything you can always ask her."
Charlottes steps closer to her and takes Angela's hand. "Come on, my dear."
I look to Felix, who hasn't said a thing the whole time.
"Thanks for calling me about Isa."
"It's my job, Boss."
"What did the doctor say?"
"I don't know," he answers. "I wasn't in the room. Isa told me that we have to wait for the results of the tests."
"I suspected something like that. The drugs?"
"I don't know, Boss," Felix groans. "It's like she avoids any talk about drugs. Hers or Angela's drugs."
I have a feeling that he is keeping something from me. I step closer to him. "What's wrong?"
"There will be two drug addicts in your house, Boss," he starts. "What if they want to buy stuff?"
"I understand your worries, Felix." I reply with a nod. "I know that we'll have to be careful around them. Certainly around Isa."
I hear the worry even in my voice. I'm scared that I will lose her to the drugs before I even have a chance to have her.
A knock on the door reminds me that we are expecting another guest, Demetri. I open the door and see him standing with a worried look.
"Let's go upstairs," I tell him, not even bothering with greetings.
LGOR
"Do you already know where the money is going?" Demetri asks after I told Felix and him everything.
Both had shocked looks, not believing that Alice isn't as innocent as she played herself to be. I still had trouble believing it myself. The deceit is so much bigger than the restaurant, and I have to find out what she did.
"Jacob is busy with it. I hope to get an answer soon."
"Alice?" Felix questions. "What are we going to do with her?"
"The sole reason she's still alive is because she knows the truth. She won't tell us willingly, but maybe she will do it without her own knowledge."
"What is your plan, Boss?" Demetri asks.
"Gather some good people," I communicate. "People you trust your lives with."
I turn around, walking to the sole window in my office. Normally, when having "business" meetings, I hold them in another building down town.
Today, I don't want to be too far away from Isa. The love I have for her has made it hard to leave her, but also my distrust in her drug addiction is also causing me to stay close.
My office has one large window overlooking the grounds of my home, but the other walls are nothing but big floor to ceiling bookcases lined with hundreds of books. I love to read, but I unfortunately don't have the time for it. The desk is a family heritance, and belonged to my great-grandfather. It passes from generation to generation when leadership is passed down.
I turn around to look at my most loyal employees.
"They have to follow Alice. I want to know every little detail of her life from now on. Nothing will be a secret anymore. I want to know where she goes, who she meets, and what she eats." I demand. "If she's fucking the milk man, I want to know. If she trips and falls on her dumb ass, I want to know. If she picks her nose, I better fucking know about it. Understand?"
"Yes, Boss," they both say in unison.
"When do we start?" Felix asks.
"Yesterday," I answer dryly. "She has been lying to me for God knows how long, and I want to know the truth as soon as possible."
"We're on it." They both nod before leaving the room.
I turn back to look out the window and I see Isa sitting in the garden, talking to Angela.
"If I want to know what happened, she is my first clue." I tell myself. I decide to go talk to her.
Walking downstairs, I meet Charlotte and she gives me a questioning look.
"What's wrong?"
"There is something wrong with that young girl," she states. "I can't put a finger on it, but I don't trust her."
"Maybe your feelings are wrong."
"When have they ever been wrong?"
I shake my head and pass her, heading to the garden.
"You will see, Jasper," she calls. "I'm never wrong."
In the garden I see that Angela is fidgeting in her seat, but I'm blaming that on her body that is probably beginning to detox. Isa stands a few feet further looking at her cell. I walk over to the bench and sit next to Angela.
There is a light breeze, but the temperature is nice. I look around my garden and I'm impressed at how it looks. The gardener does an amazing job. There are flowers everywhere, and I even have a small forest.
At the back is the guesthouse where Charlotte lives, and the pool house.
"Mr. Whitlock," Angela greets me formally. She's now wearing black sweat pants and a black sweater. Her hair is in a loose bun, and all her make-up is removed.
"Call me Jasper, Angela." I smile. "How are you doing?"
"Better." She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. Her hands grip the bench tightly. "But it is also hard, very hard."
"If you want," I start to explain. "I can help you find someone to talk to."
She looks at me, surprised at the suggestion.
"It's very important during your recovering that you talk a lot."
She nods. "Understandable, but will it help to not want the stuff. I crave it."
"I don't know how long you were given those drugs, Angela, but it will become easier. Your need for drugs will lessen."
"I'm scared."
I understand her fear, but I can't help her with it. I can only look for help for her, and once she's in rehab professional people will support her.
"You will get there," I encourage her. I look straight into her eyes and notice a flickering of some kind of emotion, but it disappeared before I could describe it.
"I hope."
There grows a silence between us, neither of us saying anything. I look at the place, where Isa stood several minutes earlier, only to see she's disappeared.
I still want to question Angela, but I also want to know where Isa is at the moment. Closing my eyes, I put my thoughts in order.
These feelings are difficult to ignore, and it makes it hard to think rationally. I have to find out what Alice's plan was, what she did.
"I have to talk to you," I finally say to Angela; ignoring the want to be with Isa.
"About what?" Angela answers.
"Can you remember anything?" I ask.
She pauses for a moment, but doesn't answer. She just gives me a confused look.
"Anything, the kidnapping, the…" I stop talking and look at her. I can see tears forming in her eyes. "I really need to know everything."
"It's hard to remember. I know I was taken by couple of guys."
"Do you remember what they looked like?"
She shakes her head. "Everything about that night is fuzzy. I've been trying to remember."
"And during your time at Breaking Dawn?"
"I was forced to use cocaine, until one day I couldn't live without it. It's like it took over my body, and during the high everything I did was like an out of body experience. I've been living in a haze for almost six months."
"Six?" I questioned her, remembering she told Isa something else. I hate liars. "You told Isa four?"
"Uhm," Angela stutters. "Four or six. It's actually hazy. I don't know the time I've been there."
I didn't trust her words, but it's possible that she doesn't remember the correct timing. She was mostly high.
"Right." I stand up. "Thank you for the information. I'm sorry that I had to put you through all this questioning. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of all of this."
"It's okay."
I smile at her before walking back to the house. I'm going to look for Isa. I have to talk to her. I can feel the love growing for her, and I think I can't hide it for much longer. I want to tell her as soon as possible.
The conversation with Angela also lingers in my mind. Her slip of her time at Breaking Dawn made wonder if she is telling the truth or not.
"Jasper," the most beautiful voice calls out. I look up to see Isa standing in the doorframe of the kitchen. "Day dreaming?"
I smile. "A little?"
"Can I know about who?"
I take a step closer to her. "Why do you assume it's a who and not a what?"
"Just guessing." She also takes a step closer. We are almost face to face, and I feel the need to kiss her growing.
Realizing that I have to talk to her before I can kiss her again, I take a step back.
"We need to talk." I say.
"Oh," she says, and it sounded as if she was disappointed.
"If we go any further in this... friendship," I explain. "We need to talk."
I take her hand and lead her to the living room. Sitting on the sofa, I pull her with me.
"What do you want to talk about?" she asks me. "You know everything."
"Not everything, Isa." She looks away, but I take her chin in my hand and make her look at me. "And you don't know everything either."
I take a deep breath, before starting my story.
"I…" My phone rings before I can say the first word. I take it out of my pocket and looked at the ID.
Demetri
I look at Isa, who looks at me eagerly, waiting for what I'm going to tell her.
"I'm sorry. I have to take this." Standing up, I push the green button. "Yes."
"Bad news, Boss." Demetri greets me. "Alice is gone."
"What!?" I scream into the phone. "How?"
"I don't know," he answers. "She's not at the apartment you gave her."
"She had to move out," I tell him. "So it's normal that she isn't there."
"We thought about that, Boss." He tries to explain what has happened. "But all her clothes and stuff are still here."
This isn't normal. Alice wouldn't leave her stuff behind. There is something going on.
"Look for her. We have to find her." I say. "The longer she is missing, the more problems she can cause."
"Will do, Boss."
I hang up, not needing to say anything more. I walk back to the living room to see it empty. I hope to find her in the kitchen.
"Jasper," Charlotte greets me. "Dinner is ready. I already called Angela and Bella."
I smile weakly, disappointed that Isa isn't here. Angela is the first to walk into the room.
"Did you see Isa?" I ask her. She shakes her head and goes sits down in front of a plate.
It looks like Charlotte has made another of my favorites; vegetables stew.
LGOR
Ten minutes into dinner, Isa still didn't show up. I wonder where she is.
"Charlotte," Charlotte looks up from the dishes. "Did you let Isa know dinner is ready?"
"Of course, Jasper," she answers. "She was just walking upstairs. She told me she would be right back."
I look at Angela, who just shrugs before taking another bite. I stand up. "I'm going to see if she's upstairs."
They both nodded and I left the kitchen, taking the stairs to Isa's room.
I find her looking out the window.
"Isa," I whisper. She turns around and I can see her red eyes. I step closer to her. "Everything alright?"
"I'm fine," she lies.
"Don't lie to me, Isa," I command. "I can see that you've been crying. What happened?"
"Nothing," she tells another lie. "I just realized something."
"What?"
"I don't know how to tell you, Jasper." This time I have a feeling that she's telling the truth. "It's complicated."
"We have time," I say. "But first you have to eat something."
I take her hand and lead her back to the kitchen. I make her sit next to Angela and give her a plate.
"Enjoy your meal." She smiles and starts eating. It looks like she was hungry, because her plate is soon empty. "Hungry?"
"Uhm, a bit," she answers sheepishly. "Is there a little more?"
I take her plate and fill it with more vegetables stew. "It's Charlotte's famous dish. Everybody in the family loves it."
"It's delicious."
"I'm going to my room." Angela stands up, leaving the room without another word, but this is Isa and mine chance to have our talk.
"Where is Charlotte?" Isa asks.
"I think she went back to the guesthouse." I tell her. "Normally, she leaves after dinner."
"Oh." She takes another bite and casts her eyes down.
"We need to talk," I tell her.
"Yes, we should."
She puts down her fork and looks me straight in the eyes. I have a feeling this conversation isn't going to go the way I want.
"Jasper," she hesitates and closes her eyes. Taking a deep breath, she opens her eyes again. I put my finger on her lips to keep her silent.
"Shh," I say. "It's okay."
"It's not okay, Jasper."
"Why not?"
"Because…" She stops talking, and her posture is telling me that she is over thinking everything. She has a closed pose, her hands in her lap and her eyes are cast down. She looks up. "I still love Anthony."
A/N:
Was this what you expected? Or did you think something else?
What will Jasper do with Bella's confession and what is Bella really thinking?
Let me know and stay tuned in for the next chapter.
P.S. Maybe you get a surprise if you review...
