Chapter 10

"Okay, so clearly not ms. Hanaki" Ayako said, trepidation coloring her tone.

The knocking sounds died down at that exclamation, clearly appeased by the phrase.

"But Mai saw Ms. Hanaki in her dream? Right?" Yasu said, his hand rubbing through his hair as he looked in Naru's direction, clear confusion on his face.

Naru had his thinking cap on, I could tell.

"Miss Hara, can you speak to him?" Naru's voice was quiet, contemplative. Like he knew something no one else did. I should know, because that's usually what happens on our cases, we are always the last to know.

"I can try. He seems complacent enough"

"He's still here then?"

"Yes, near the door way"

All of us turned our head to the door way, it was empty of course. I'm not sure what we were expecting. We've been on dozens of cases and very rarely do we all glance an apparition. Especially one as spiritually weak as Mr. Hanaki.

"I want to know why Ms. Hanaki's twin would feel compelled to murder her neice?"

We were shocked into silence. Literally. I mean if we were in an anime our jaws would be to the floor. A twin. The possibility doesn't seem likely, however at the same time, it seems plausible

Ugh, my brain hurts.

"A twin sister?" Monk whispered looking positively awestruck.

"Yes, the phenomenon occurs when a fertilized egg splits to form two embryos, resulting in two identical beings. This is taught in basic biology. I thought you would be smart enough to know this" Naru said taking three long strides to stand beside Masako.

I giggled, Monk just looked so affronted at Naru's explanation.

Well, I laughed in my head, if I were to voice my amusement outloud there is no doubt I would be assaulted with my own lecture on my average academic acheivments.

Not fun. Trust me.

"He says that it was his fault, not hers." Masako said, her tone was quiet with confusion. "I don't understand. How is this your fault?"

The temperature in the room began to get cooler. Not cold exactly, but I could feel goose flesh run the length of my arms. Masko gave a slight nod of her head and her eyes drifted closed for a few moments. When they opened again, it looked like she lost the shine in them. Almost as if there was no life in them at all.

Ah. A possesion. That makes sense. Kind of wish could do that, maybe be a bit more useful to cases.

...

...

You know what nevermind. That thought just terrified the living daylights outta me.

"Why did your wifes sister, murder your daughter? Again Naru's question rang throught the air.

Masako -er- shook his head.

"I was...in an intamate relationship with her. I didn't want my sweet Maika to know. When her mother was at work, Yui would come to visit me, she was ahem, pleasurable company when Ren was busy with her company".

My gut twisted. This man was disgusting.

"How did Maika not know it was her aunt?" John asked, "It doesn't make much sense".

"But it does" Mr. Hanaki spoke "Maika never met her aunt, or wasn't supposed to meet her. In fact, Ren didn't even want her to know she existed. You see, when they were younger, Ren was engaged to another man before me. Until she found Yui naked in bed with him that is. She was so furious she refused to see her anymore".

My gut twisted again in anger.

"SO YOU THOUGHT IT WAS OKAY TO DO IT TO HER AGAIN?" I yelled, unbelievable. How could anyone be so damn heartless. Masakos face twisted in frantic fear for a moment before she, no, HE spoke again.

"I wasn't cheating! I mean, I met her a few years ago at a business formal, I just fell in love with her! She's Rens IDENTICAL twin, they're practically considered the same person!"

Naru's jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth grind against eachother. Lins eyes shot quickly in his direction. I felt as if I was missing some major piece of a puzzle.

"Wrong. Twins have two seperate bodies, two seperate functioning brains, and two different personalities and lifestyles. The only thing Ms. Hanaki and her sister have in common is face. The only ones who refuse to aknowledge that fact is the ignorant."

HIs voice was like ice. I had never heard him sound so angry before. It scared me to be honest, if this was naru's 'mean voice' then every insult he's ever hurtled my way was docile and sweet. He was so mad in fact, I feared for a brief moment that he might deck Masako in the face. But it's Naru, so that thought in irrational.

"BUT-!" Mr. Hanaki said, his voice shuttering and high.

"No, those are the facts. And you have yet to answer the question. Why did she kill her?" Naru said, cutting off his protest with a hard tone.

"She was under...lets say mental stress..."

"Like a mental affliction?" John said, his chin resting on his finger as he listened intently.

"If you wanna put it that way I guess?" Our ghost friend said as he took a deep breath and continued, "She put herself in Rens life when ever she was out of town, and would play the role of Maika's mother. I knew it was wrong, really I did! But they both looked so happy, figured what was the harm you know?"

"She killed your daughter. Thats the harm, or did you forget that?" Lin said, his voice hard. It was so uncharacteristic that I turned my head in his direction so fast I think I got whiplash.

"right..." His voice got sad, and quiet, "I started to notice it, a couple months into our em...intamacy, but she would tell me things that she thought was wrong with Maika"

I shuddered and the murder in my dreams flashed quickly before my eyes "Flaws" I muttered under my breath.

"Wrong? Wrong how?" Ayako said, a tinge of anger lining her tone.

"Her fingers are to chubby, she would say, and tell me she always had slender fingers when she was a child and so her daughter should have as well", His breath shuddered "or that her ears stuck out a bit to much, making her look more like Ren than herself."

"But that wasn't her daughter, you should have stopped this, you should have been her father and protected her", Monk seethed.

"I know, I'm sorry"

"If you were sorry, you would have stopped her, and gotten her some proffessional help. Clearly Yui needed medical and mental attention" Naru said, his voice was more neutral now, almost as if he was trying to detach himself from the conversation.

well, emotionally at least.

"What happened after that?" Yasu interrupted.

"The things she would say began to become a lot more frequent. Almost everytime we were together she would mention something about Maika, but I loved her you know, so I thought, I thought that it was worth it-!"

"Did you love your daughter Mr. Hanaki? I said, angrily, I could feel tears gathering at the corners of my eyes, and I wished for once that I wasn't so damn emotional.

"Yes! Of course I loved her, She was my baby!"

"Then it wasn't worth it" Tears slipped down my eyes and he froze looking at me.

"You look alot like her, I bet she would look like you when she grows up."

I stepped back from him, grabbing on to monks sleeve as Masako reached her hand towards me.

"She won't grow up Mr. Hanaki...she was murdered." Naru said, averting his attention away from me. I let out a sigh of relief and shivered slightly. Monk shifted and let go of his sleeve and felt him wrap his arm around my shoulders and hug me sofly to his side.

"I know that!" He cried, it sounded strange coming out of Masakos mouth, greivous and a little bit deranged. "Its my fault shes dead! I know that!"

"How?" John's voice was quiet compared to the screaming, but I think that's what made it seem louder. "You say it was your fault, but all evidence suggests Yui is the culprit".

"I didn't stop her..." his voice was so sad, I almost felt bad for him. Almost.

He is stil a two timing jerface afterall.

"That's true, an accesory to murder maybe, but not the actual murderer." Ayako said scathingly. I knew she wasn't much of a fan of our ghostly cheat.

"I-I can't be here anymore!" He wailed and Masako bent at the knees falling unconcious. John caught her by the shoulders and knelt of the floor beside her.

"So we know who did it at least" Yasu scratched the back of his head in a confused manner. I didn't blame him. Its not exactly easy to tell the police 'hey we know who killed the little girl! How? Oh her dead dad told us'.

Yea, thats not really gonna go down that well. That would be like a one way ticket to the looney toons bin!

"I wanna swear" I said, a grumpy pout pulling at my lips.

"Go for it! Loud and proud Mai" Yasu said laughing abit,

From the corner of my eye I saw john shaking his head, and 'Oh Lord' mumbled quietly under his breath. Lin and Naru turned away from me, getting right back to work -as usual-, and Monk and Ayako had the audacity to look amused.

I swear!
Sometimes.

Never..

I never swear! I'm too much of a goodie goodie.

"DAMNIT!" I yelled and stomped my way out of base, and heard the obnoxious laugh of yasu behind me.

"You go girl!" He yelled laughing more.

All done!
