Recap
"Mummy. Mummy. Mummy? Mummy?" they all chant,
"What's happening?" Rose shouts scared, I pull away from the wall and head over to them, the doctor, Rose and Jack, not the patient's.
"I don't know." he comments the patients and Doctor Constantine all stand up.
"You know she really doesn't like those words." I announced to the man getting a look for the statement,
"Mummy." the all ask,
"You know it's always London that this happens to hardly anywhere else why is that?" I ask
"Don't let them touch you." The doctor said ignoring my comment,
"What happens if they touch us?" Rose questioned,
"You're looking at it." "Sweetie" we answer, the sweetie from me obviously, the patients close in on the Doctor, Rose, myself and Jack.
"Help me, mummy." they all asked, I shudder, it was really creepy to have people say that with voices not their own, or the voice of their inner child,
"Mummy. Mummy. Mummy. Mummy. Mummy. Mummy." they kept chanting and I knew what was coming next.
XXX
The gas mask people - as I haven't yet came up with a creative name-have surrounded us. Then finally the Doctor stares sternly around at them.
"Go to your room." he ordered them, as they seemed to be in the mind of a child why not treat them like one I guess. The gas mask people hesitate. "Go to your room!" he shouts again, the gas-mask people cock their heads to one side and I sigh, it's working. Rose and Jack look at one another while I struggle to keep a straight face. "I mean it! I am very, very angry with you. I am very, VERY cross! Go - to - your - ROOM!" I flinch at the last shout, he points violently in no particular direction, and miraculously, all the gas-mask people turn meekly away. I let out a sigh of relief as the patients and staff in the hospital climb back onto their beds.
The Doctor sighs with relief seeming to share my thoughts.
"I'm really glad that worked." he said I interrupt,
"Yeah those would've been TERRIBLE last words." I snigger before feeling the urge to cough, I tense my shoulders and force it back drawing Roses attention I give her a smile.
Rose is now sitting by one of the beds, looking at one of the gas mask people. Jack settles down in a chair.
"Why are they all wearing gas masks?" Rose questioned, I let out a sigh,
"They're not wearing them Rosie."
"She's right. Those masks are flesh and bone." Jack explains, I was now sitting on the table next to him as I felt a little tired,
"How was your con supposed to work?" the Doctor snapped,
"Why don't you ask Princess here?" he asked, I sigh and rub my temples,
"Jackie... Please?" he lets out a sigh,
"Simple enough. Find some harmless piece of space-junk... let the nearest Time Agent track it back to Earth. Convince him it's valuable, name a price. When he's put 50% up front - oops! A German bomb falls on it, destroys it forever. He never gets to see what he's paid for. Never knows he's been had. I buy him a drink with his own money, and we discuss dumb luck. The perfect self-cleaning con."
"Yeah. Perfect." the Doctor agreed sarcastically,
"The London Blitz is great for self-cleaners - Pompeii's nice if you want to make a vacation of it though, but you've got to set your alarm for volcano day." he said with a layed back tone, I raise my hand and slap the back of his head making him wince, "Getting a hint of disapproval." he continues,
"Take a look around the room. This is what your 'harmless piece of space-junk' did." the Doctor snarled,
"It was a burnt-out medical transporter - it was empty." Jack defended, The Doctor looks darkly at him and walks off and Jack turns to me. "Princess, I swear it was empty I didn't..." he trails off I sigh again
"I know you think that but the next time you do something like this check inside properly and then make sure it lands somewhere deserted, Jackie you can't know if it hurt anyone because you weren't there."
"Rose. 'Lexa'." I look over at my nickname,
"We getting out of here?" Rose questioned, I shake my head
"We're going upstairs." the doctor and I say in sync,
"You know that's creepy when you do that Alex." Rose commented. I shrug and stick my tongue out at her like the mature woman I am and she grins. Rose follows after the Doctor. Jack gets up and calls after him.
"I even programmed the flight computer so it wouldn't land on anything living - I harmed no-one! I don't know what's happening here, but believe me - I had nothing to do with it." he tried desperately to defend himself, I grab his hand and pull him along,
"I'll tell you what's happening. You forgot to set your alarm clock. It's volcano day." the Doctor snapped,
"I know he's done something wrong but can you give it a rest you're not helping me at the minute." I snap as I tense and force back another cough. Just then siren goes off in the distance.
"What's that?" Rose demanded,
"The all-clear." Jack answered,
"I wish." the doctor muttered. He leaves the ward, Rose, myself and Jack follow him I however leave the two alone and catch up to the Doctor.
"Do you have a tissue or something disposable?" I question, he pauses and goes into his pocket bringing out a pack of tissues, "Cheers." I take it open the pack and pull out one of them holding it to my mouth and let the cough I had held back rip through my throat, after I was done I fold it over and wipe around my mouth before tossing it into the medical waste bin that we had just passed,
"It's getting worse." the Doctor observed, I scoff,
"What gave it away." I deadpan before glancing over my shoulder, "I told her." I state as we walk up the stairs, he pauses before continuing on like it hadn't said anything, "You can't pretend it's not gonna happen, you're right it is getting worse, I'm getting tired easily, my headaches are getting more frequent and so are the coughing fits, at this rate I might not even make it to game station." I explain he looks back at me,
"How did you tell her?" he asked, I let out a chuckle,
"I dropped them bomb shell on her just before we met Jack, didn't really get the chance to ask me anything." I shrug
"Mr Spock? Princess?" I hear Jack call, I roll my eyes
"Why does he call you Princess." the Doctor scoffed, I roll my eyes,
"I told him to focus on finding you and he called me a perfect princess, then the nickname stuck." I comment just as Rose calls out,
"Doctor? Alex?" just as they run past the flight of stairs we had walked up we pop our heads over,
"Have you got a blaster?" the Doctor called down as I called,
"Come on, Rose, you as well captain flirt." Rose and Jack skid to a halt and backtrack.
"Sure!" Jackie calls as they run up the stairs and find themselves standing outside a door, dull in colour it reminded me of the bunker doors from the shelters.
"The night your space-junk landed, someone was hurt. This was where they were taken." the Doctor explained
"What happened?" Rose inquires, the Doctor looked over at me, I hold my hands up
"Oh no, no interference from me this time." he sighs and looks back at Rose,
"Let's find out." before he turned to Jack, "Get it open." Jack grins at the chance to show off and pulls out his blaster as we stand back,
"What's wrong with your sonic screwdriver?" Rose questions quietly,
"Nothing." the Doctor whispers back I then whisper to Rose,
"He's embarrassed about having a sonic screw driver because Jack has a sonic blaster, there's just one problem with his weapon of choice." Jack's blaster cuts a perfectly square hole around the lock of the door and it squeaks open.
"Sonic blaster, 51st century. Weapon Factories of Villengard?" the doctor said showing his knowledge,
"You've been to the factories?" Jack asked in surprise, The doctor then takes the blaster from Jack looking it over saying,
"Once."
"Well, they gone now. Destroyed. The main reactor went critical. vaporized the lot." Jack informed, the Doctor gave him the blaster and I snigger,
"Like I said - once. There's a banana grove there, now. I like bananas. Bananas are good." the Doctor grinned,
"If he says it had nothing to do with him, it's a lie." I announce pushing the door open and walking as the Doctor's pleasant smile dropped from his face to a look of defence,
"OI!" I turn and face him,
"Tell me I'm wrong?" he opens his mouth before closing it and looking sullen,"Yeah I thought so." The Doctor passes me as he walks into the room. Rose goes over to Jack,
"Nice blast pattern." She compliments,
"Digital." he answers back,
"Squareness gun." Rose comments with a grin,
"Yeah." he nodded with a smile of his own,
"I like it." She turns and walks into the room. Jack laughs, then follows her. The Doctor switches a light on. The room looks as though it has been vandalised. The window is broken and there is stuff all over the floor.
"What d'you think?" the Doctor question the two of them, I lent on the table facing the door,
"SOMETHING got out of here..." he said putting the emphsis on the something.
"Yeah. And?" the Doctor urged him to continue,
"Something powerful. Angry." Jack said looking around the room at the destruction,
"Powerful and angry." the Doctor repeated, Jack enters a room off the side. The floors and walls are covered with a child's drawings. There are a few toys on the floor and a little bed in the corner and my heart broke at the sight, children shouldn't be locked up like this, just because they don't understand them.
"A child? I suppose this explains 'mummy'." Jack theorised, I nod my head
"How could a child do this?" Rose questioned looking around the room that was in ruins, The Doctor plays a tape of Doctor Constantine talking to the Child.
"Do you know where you are?" Constantine asked
"Are you my mummy?" Jamie asked, I could just imagine his head tilted to the side as he asked,
"Are you aware of what's around you? Can you... see?" Constantine continued,
"Are you my mummy?" Jamie repeated,
"What do you want? Do you know-" Constantine was cut off
"I want my mummy. Are you my mummy? I want my mummy! Are you my mummy?" Jamie continued to ask repetitively, he must be so scared, and all he wants is his mum and she can't even admit that she is his mum until the very end when people were going to die, every single one of the drawings covering the wall are of the child's mother. "Are you my mummy? Mummy? Mummy?" I look over at the door knowing he would soon be there,
"Doctor, I've heard this voice before." Rose informs sounding shaken
"Me too." the Doctor admits,
"Mummy?" Jamie asked from the tape,
"Always, "are you my mummy?". Like he doesn't know." Rose commented still oking at the drawings,
"Mummy?" his voice sounds again,
"Why doesn't he know?" Rose asked to no one in particular,
"Are you there, mummy? Mummy?" Jamie asked, and that was the end of of the tape,
"Mummy? Please, mummy? Mummy?" This time his voice didn't come from the tape, I looked at the door and sure enough Jamie was standing there in the doorway looking into the room. The Doctor is pacing around the room.
"Doctor?" Rose asked looking at him in concern,
"Can you sense it?" the Doctor asked not stopping his pacing,
"Sense what?" Jack questioned,
"Coming out of the walls, can you feel it?" he continued to ask not bothering with Jacks question just hinting,
"Mummy?" Jamie asked as I continued to look at the poor boy who had been broken, The Doctor stops to look around at Rose, Jack and me.
"Funny little human brains, how do you get around in those things?" he asked looking at us, I don't answer I don't think he expected an answer,
"When he's stressed, he likes to insult species." Rose explains, I smile a little but can't bring a proper one to my face as I looked at the boy,
"Rose, I'm thinking." the Doctor snaps not looking over or stopping his pacing,
"Cuts himself shaving, does half an hour in life forms he's cleverer than..." I let out a chuckle as she continues to ignore the alien,
"There are these children living rough around the bomb site. They come out during air-raids looking for food." the Doctor said and for once I felt a little lost, but not for long,
"Mummy, please?" I flinch slightly at the sound of his voice, it sounded so innocent and yet he could do more damage than a full grown man,
"Suppose they were there when this thing - whatever it was - landed?" the Doctor said spitting the idea out and I knew where he was going again,
"It was a med-ship. It was harmless." Jack snaps,
"Yes, you keep saying. 'Harmless'. Suppose one of them was affected - altered?" the Doctor said ignoring his protest as he continued on with his idea,
"Altered how?" Rose asked,
"I'm here!" Jamie called out and i look over at him again not realising that I had looked away,
"It's afraid. Terribly afraid, and powerful. It doesn't know it yet, but it will do." the Doctor lets out a small laugh as he seems to realise what I had known for a while now, "It's got the power of a god, and I just sent it to its room." as the Doctor stops pacing the crackling noise from the tape becomes more pronounced and the others seem to notice the noise,
"Doctor..." Rose calls scared suddenly,
"I'm here. Can't you see me?" Jamie asked looking at everyone in the room,
"What's that noise?" Rose continues
"End of thee tape sweetie, ran out a little while ago." I inform her calmly,
"It ran out about 30 seconds ago." the Doctor continued,
"I'm here, now. Can't you see me?" Jamie calls again and if I weren't looking at him I would have imagined him stamping his feet in a little tantrum,
"I sent it to it's room. THIS is its room." the Doctor explains as he turns on his heel to see the child standing by the machine
"Are you my mummy?" he asked cocking his head as he looked at Rose, "Mummy?"
"Doctor?" Rose asked the fear in her voice tripling,
"Okay... on my signal... make for the door. NOW!" he shouted. He violently produces a banana and points it threateningly at the Child. The Doctor grins and produces Jack's sonic blaster, blasting a square hole in the wall I let out a snort at Jacks face.
"Go! Now! Don't drop the banana!" He tells Jack and I shake my head, Jack hops through the hole in the wall just after us,
"Why not?!" he shouted at the Doctor,
"Good source of potassium!" he said with a grin, looking around I find we are back in a corridor. Jamie approaches us from inside the room. Grabbing his sonic blaster off the Doctor jack snaps
"Give me that!"
"Are you my mummy?" Jamie asked again, Jack points the blaster at the wall, and it rebuilds itself, blocking the Child out.
"Digital rewind." Jack explains as he tosses banana back to the Doctor, "Nice switch." he complimented,
"It's from the Groves of Villengard. I thought it was appropriate." he answered with a grin, I sigh
"Yes because that is so mature, your over nine hundred and you switch the man's gun with a banana." I comment sarcastically "Why am I traveling with you again?" I question playfully
"There's really a banana grove in the heart of Villengard and you did that?" Jack asked incredulously,
"Bananas are good." the doctor replies simply, The Child- Jamie thumps the wall from the other side, cracking it.
"Doctor!" Rose and I interrupt,
"Come on!" he shouted pulling off down the corridor, we rushed down a short flight of stairs and down another corridor, before we encounter all the patients bursting out of the ward calling 'mummy'. we hastily backtrack, but they find the gas mask people coming from that direction too. We were back where we had started and trapped like rats and then Jamie broke through the wall, I couldn't keep from flinching at the way the wall broke with such a loud sound.
"It's keeping us here so it can get at us." the Doctor theorised, I roll my eyes.
"I thought that was obvious?" Jack points his blaster in each direction whilst questioning,
"It's controlling them?" I shake my head 'Dear lord they're idiots.'
"It IS them. It's every living thing in this hospital." the Doctor informed ignoring my snide comment,
"Okay. This can function as a sonic blaster, a sonic cannon, and a triple-enfolded sonic disrupter. Doc, what you got?" I grin as Jack asked that question, I couldn't wait for this argument I bet River would love to be here, my grin dropped at that thought, she wouldn't make it this far, she wouldn't even get to Martha... but then again neither will I, I wont even make it to 10... I shake my head again and get ride of those thoughts. The Doctor had since taken out his sonic screwdriver from his pocket, but Jack's not looking as he is too busy brandishing his sonic device at the gas mask people.
"A sonic, er... oh, never mind." the Doctor dismissed trying to keep himself from mentioning,
"What?" Jack shouted still switching his gun to different angles, The Doctor ignoring him turns to face the other group of gas mask people, switching on his sonic screwdriver.
"It's sonic, okay? Let's leave it at that." the Doctor insisted and my grin returned, I know it was not the best time to find something funny but what can I say I had become something of an adrenaline junkie since traveling with the man in the time traveling sexy blue box.
"Disrupter? Cannon? What?" Jack continued to press and it was getting on the Doctors nerves that he didn't seem to have anything as good as that... well in his mind I always loved the sonic,
"It's sonic! Totally sonic! I am sonic-ed up!" the doctor avoided and my grin got bigger if that was possible.
"A sonic WHAT?!" Jack shouted, this time the Doctor turned on him,
"SCREWDRIVER!" I let out a laugh and look over to Rose who seemed to be getting sick of the conversation when our lives were in danger, Jack spins around. At that moment, Jamie finally manages to punch through the wall, he begins to climb through the hole.
"Rose sweetie, anytime now." I shout, taking that as a go ahead for her she grabs onto Jack's wrist and makes him point the sonic blaster at the floor.
"Going down!" she shouted, I brace myself knowing this was going to be nothing good for my system at the time. She blasts a hole in the floor and we all fall in a messy heap on the floor of the ward below. I let out a groan and slowly stand up, Jack hurriedly activates the digital rewind, closing the hole so we aren't followed. "Doctor, Alex, are you okay?" Rose questions,
"Peachy." I gasp straightening my top,
"Could've used a warning...!" the Doctor complained, I elbow him,
"Ugh, the gratitude." Rose says with a sigh before getting up herself,
"Who has a sonic screwdriver?" Jack asked with sarcasm,
"I do!" The Doctor snapped, Rose looks around ignoring them and I grab a tissue as I cough into it the dust aggravating my throat,
"Light!" Rose said still looking around, I don't move but make sure to wipe my face before they come on, sill having to keep it from Jack, suddenly my phone went off and I answer,
"Hello?"
"Hi" Jacks voice says, I sigh
"Why are you calling and where are you?" I ask him,
"From the hub about a week after we found the diagnosis."
"Well it's good to be synced for a while it's the same with me now get to the why please."
"I want you to come for a check up Owens insisting as well." Jack responded,
"Well if he's insisting how can I refuse?" I say with sarcasm,
"Are you coming or not princess?" I let out a sigh
"Sure and I've just found out that I can't punch you for the gifts." I whine with a pout, he laughs
"See you soon."
"Bye." I hung up and found the boys still talking.
"There's gotta be a light switch!" Rose said still moving around the dark,
"Never had a long night? Never had a lot of cabinets to put up?" I snigger at this, I would have reminded him of that when River told him to go build a cabinet and he complained, Rose finally finds a switch and turns the lights on.
"Probably should have warned you about this." I admit, as the gas-mask people lying in the beds sit up and start calling 'mummy'.
"Door." Jack states ending their argument, we rush to the door as the patients start getting out of bed, it locked, Jack tries to blast it open but his sonic blaster doesn't work. "Damn it!" he snaps, I turn to Rose and start talking,
"You know how I said there was one thing wrong with the weapon?" she nods "Your about to find out." I say with a grin, I didn't get a smile but then I wasnt expecting one because of what I had told her, Jack steps back allowing the Doctor to use his sonic screwdriver instead. He whacks the sonic blaster angrily.
"It's the special features, they really drain the battery." I was still grinning as Jack admitted this,
"The battery?!" Rose blurts finally smiling, The Doctor opens the door and we dash through it. "That's so LAME." she continues and I let out another chuckle, we were now in the storeroom where Jack disappears, The Doctor slams the door shut behind us and locks it with his sonic screwdriver. Jack runs to the window,
"I was gonna send for another one, but SOMEBODY'S gonna blow up the factory." he reasons glaring at the doctor, I sigh,
"Boy's enough with your petty arguments this isn't the time." my voice came out sharp but I didn't care I was holding back another fit of coughs and I was tired,
Jack glared at the Doctor.
"Oh, I know - first day I met him, he blew my job up. That's practically how he communicates." Rose agreed, I sigh,
"Rosie sweetie, that's not really helping matters."
"Okay, that door should hold it for a bit." The Doctor said ignoring us all,
"The door?! The WALL didn't stop it!" I just lean against the wall,
"Well, it's gotta FIND us first! Come on, we're not done yet! Assets, assets!" the Doctor urged looking around the room,
"Well, I've got a banana, and at a pinch you could put up some shelves." Jack said sarcastically, the Doctor still ignoring him strode over to the window,
"Window-" Jack cut him off shooting the idea in the foot,
"Barred, sheer drop outside. Seven stories."
"And no other exits. Alex what have you got?" she asked looking over at me, I bend down to my boot and pull out two knives and then grab the sai's from their holsters on my arms holding one in each hand and the two knives in the left whilst spinning the sai in my right.
"Nothing much that can help, these people are still alive with fast regenerative abilities and I'd rather not hurt a child no matter how powerful." I drone replacing each weapon carefully, Jack settled in a chair comfortably.
"Well, the assets conversation went in a flash, didn't it?" he asks rhetorically,
"Jack Harkness I swear to god if you don't shut up you will never have sex again, am I clear?" I threaten and he straightened up nodding, The Doctor turns and eyes him for a moment, then looks at Rose and me.
"So, where'd you pick this one up, then?" he demanded, I just look at him,
"Doctor..." Rose warns,
"They were hanging from a barrage balloon, I had an invisible spaceship. I never stood a CHANCE." Jack explained, Rose looks ever so slightly uncomfortable.
"Okay, one, we want to get out of here. Two, we CAN'T get out of here. Have I missed anything?" the Doctor asked looking out the window, Rose looks in Jack's direction.
"Yeah... Jack just disappeared." Rose answered in wonder as to how he did it, The Doctor spins around to see Jack's empty.
XXX
Rose suddenly turns on me.
"When were you gonna tell me?" she asked, the doctor looked sharply at us, I didn't play dumb, it was best to get this out of the way,
"I've known about it for three maybe four days you know how it is in the TARDIS." I answer my voice void of emotion
"Still doesn't answer my question." she accused, I sigh and sit in Jacks chair,
"I figured the first day that I didn't want you to know but then after a few hours I decided against it, it would have made me like him." I spat, I saw the Doctor flinch,
"Like who?" Rose coaxed, I point at the doctor,
"He's known for a while before I found out, I didn't even find out from him." I whisper,
"Who did you find out from?" Rose questioned,
"Remember when I went to Cardiff? well I met up with a few friends, I had been coughing up a bit of blood since, with Adam, well I coughed up blood in front of them and one of my friends was a Doctor, we went to... his practice I suppose and he ran the tests, everyone was upset with the results, and after a while I went back to where you were, where I had my friend drop me off. The coughing got more common from there, so I just had a feeling and went to the med-bay, found the file and lost it." I say with a shrug,
"And you had to tell me you were dying when we were hanging from a barrage balloon?"
"Well it was either then while I had the guts or not at all." I argue, she opens her mouth, "Look Rose I know that I should tell people but I don't want a fuss made over me because of the inevitable, I'm going to die, I know that and I accept it, but I just want to live normally for what ever time I have left, that means aunt Jackie can't know and I don't want Jack knowing either, not even Mickey, okay?" she just nods and I lean my head back on the wall with my eyes closed to pass time.
XXX
My eyes were still closed and they assumed I was asleep, Rose hadn't said a word to him about what I had told her,
"Okay." I hear Rose speak "So he's vanished into thin air. Why is it always the GREAT looking ones who do that?" she asked, I open my eyes and grin again, The Doctor peers up at her, giving her a look.
"I'm making an effort not to be insulted." the Doctor commented, I don't give away that I'm awake, I always loved it when Rose wound him up, She waved her hand to dismiss his comment before continuing
"I mean... men."
"Okay. Thanks. That REALLY helped." he responded sarcastically, the old radio springs to life and Jack's voice transmits through it and I sit forward leaning on my knees.
"Rose? Doctor? Princess? Can you hear me?" Jack asked, the Doctor scoffing at the Princess part, whats eating his nerves, they both hurry over to the radio, the Doctor picking it up while I didn't bother, it was the best part about being in the know, you didn't have to put in the most work. "I'm back on my ship." Jack continued, "Used the emergency teleport. Sorry I couldn't take you." The Doctor, in some confusion, holds the wires that have been ripped out of the radio. "It's security-keyed to my molecular structure. I'm working on it - hang in there."
"How're you speaking to us?" the Doctor finally asked,
"Om-Com. I can call anything with a speaker grill."
"Now there's a coincidence." the Doctor mutters,
"What is?" Jack asks,
"The Child can Om-Com too." I state boardly,
"It can?" Rose asked looking slightly scared,
"Anything with a speaker grill. Even the TARDIS phone." The Doctor explained with a nod,
"What, you mean the Child can phone us?" Rose questioned and cue Jamie please,
"And I can hear you. Coming to find you. Coming to fiiiiind you." Jamie sang through the radio,
"Doctor, can you hear that?" Jack demanded over the radio,
"Loud and clear." The Alien answered,
"I'll try to block out the signal. Least I can do." Jack said already working on it,
"Coming to find you, mummy!" Jamie continues to taunt,
"Remember this one, Rose? Princess?" and then Glenn Miller's 'Moonlight Serenade' sounds through the room Jamie's voice gone, I grinned as Rose looks ever so slightly uncomfortable as the Doctor turns to look at us questioningly.
"Our song." Rose explained, his expression doesn't change as he nods, he didn't like the answer, Rose shifts around in embarrassment.
XXX
Rose had sat in a wheelchair and was now shuffling around in it clearly board as I hummed to Moonlight Serenade as it was still playing, the buzzing of the sonic screwdriver in the background makes Rose spins the wheel chair around in the Doctor's direction.
"What you doing?" Rose questioned, the Doctor still holding the sonic to the wall near the window answers,
"Trying to set up a resonation pattern in the concrete. Loosen the bars." I let out a groan,
"Doctor, if it can't resonate wood what makes concrete so different, and even if it did it would take years to do, a hundred at least."
"How do you know that?" he questioned not looking away from his work, I wave my hand dismissively,
"Past, present and future thing, you wont remember for a while."
"You don't think he's coming back, do ya?" Rose questioned from her seat,
"Wouldn't bet my life." the doctor says curtly,
"I would, but then again..." I trail off, not the Jack I know at the moment he was unpredictable,
"Why don't you trust him?" Rose demanded,
"Why do you?" The Doctor countered,
"Saved my life. Bloke-wise, that's up there with flossing. And Alex believes he will." Rose defends, The Doctor does not answer. Rose looks at him for a moment and then nudges me nodding to him.
"I trust him 'cos he's like you." Rose said before I imput
"Except with dating and dancing." he seems to pause at that, shooting me a look.
"What?" Rose asked amused,
"You just assume I'm..." he trails at a loss for words,
"What?" I ask cocking my head to the side,
"You just assume that I don't... dance." he states, I let a grin stretch my lips, I know he does dance,
"What, are you telling me you DO... dance?" Rose commented also wearing a sly grin,
"Nine hundred years old, me. I've been around a bit. I think you can assume that at some point I've DANCED." he said defensively,
"I bet you have." I say with mock lust, Rose grins even more.
"You?!" She exclaimed in pretend shock,
"Problem?" The Doctor asked.
"Doesn't the universe implode or something if you... dance?" I let out a chuckle at what I know is going through her head,
"Well, I've got the moves but I wouldn't want to boast." He said off handedly, Rose still grinning gets up from the wheelchair and turns up the music. The Doctor looks around, completely wrong-footed. Rose walks slowly over to me and my smile drops as she grabbed my hand pulling me from my seat, the Doctor looks back at the wall determinedly,
"You've got the moves?" She asked again, The Doctor looks back at her. "Show me your moves. Dance with Alex."
"Rose, I'm trying to resonate concrete, and Lexa looks a little uncomfortable with the idea." the Doctor squirmed,
"Jack'll be back, he'll get us out. So come on - the world doesn't end 'cos the Doctor dances. And Alex will get over it, not the first dance she's had." That made me grin, she wasn't referring to dancing on a dance floor, he turned at the comment though, he snaps off his sonic screwdriver, replaces it in his jacket pocket and steps away from the window towards us, an odd expression on his face. He stands in front of me for a moment. He takes Roses hands, Rose staring up at him almost apprehensively. He turns her hands over and looks at them. Knowing what he's looking for I hold my hands up so he doesn't have to grab them. He does anyway.
"Barrage balloon?" he questioned,
"... What?" Rose asked looking completely lost,
"You were hanging from a barrage balloon." he states, I shrug,
"I like to be a bit of an acrobat."
"Oh... yeah. About two minutes after you left us. Thousands of feet above London - middle of a German air-raid - Union Jack ALL over my chest." I grin.
"I already said I told you so." Rose grins as she rolls her eyes, The Doctor raises his eyebrows.
"I've travelled with a lot of people, but you two are setting new records for jeopardy-friendly." he says skeptically,
"Well, we try." I throw out, He goes back to examining our hands.
"Is this you dancing? 'Cos I've got notes." Rose comments sarcastically,
"Hanging from a rope a thousand feet above London. Not a cut, not a bruise." he continues ignoring her, He shows her, her own hands.
"Yeah, I know. Captain Jack fixed me up... Alex didn't have anything wrong."
"I was hanging upside down." I answer.
"Oh, we're calling him 'Captain Jack' now, are we?" I could hear the jealously in his voice and smiled,
"Well, his name's Jack and he's a captain..." I comment off handedly looking at my nails, I was thinking of painting them, I just couldn't decide on whether it should be blue black or silver...
"He's not really a captain, Lexa." I grin,
"D'you know what I think? I think you're experiencing Captain envy." Rose teased, The Doctor half nods, not denying this. He takes my hands and we begin to dance. I was a little shocked should have been Rose not me, "You'll find your feet at the end of your legs. You may care to move them." Rose continues, I was still aware of my surroundings,
"If ever he was a captain, he's been defrocked." he informed Rose whilst moving closer to me, that was when our surroundings changed, I looked over at Jack with a grin,
"Yeah? Shame I missed that." Rose said with a smile,
"Actually, I quit. Nobody takes my frock." Jack cut in making the other two look over in surprised shock, I pull away and go to sit in Jacks chair with a grin, "Most people notice when they've been teleported Princess here did. You guys are so sweet. Sorry about the delay. I had to take the nav-com offline to override the teleport security."
"You can spend ten minutes overriding your own protocols? Maybe you should remember whose ship it is." The Doctor snapped,
"Oh, I do. She was GORGEOUS." Rose smiles "Like I told her - be back in five minutes." He ducks into a compartment underneath the console. The Doctor was looking around at the ship, I had become pretty good at ignoring the feeling in the pit of my stomach, live for what happens worry about the consequences when your dying.
"This is a Chula ship." The Doctor observes, I roll my eyes, good observation captain
"Yeah, just like that medical transporter. Only, this one IS dangerous." he called up, I press my foot into his side, "Hey." he growls, The Doctor snaps his fingers, and his hand is instantly surrounded by nanogenes.
"They're what fixed my hands up! Jack called 'em, um..." Rose struggled to remember,
"Nanogenes." I supply,
"Nanogenes, yeah." she said snapping her fingers,
"Sub-atomic robots. There's millions of them in here, see? Burned my hand on the console when we landed - all better now. They activate when the bulk head's sealed. Check you out for damage, fix any physical flaws." he said grimly, Rose beams. The Doctor banishes the nanogenes with a wave of his hand and turns to Jack. "Take us to the crash site. I need to see your space junk." he orders,
"As soon as I get the nav-com back online." he announces as though the doctor was a nagging parent, The Doctor looks mildly annoyed and I can't help but snort. He sent me a glare and I sigh leaning back in the chair, "Make yourself comfortable. Carry on with whatever it was you were..." he gesture's between the Doctor and I, "... doing."
"We were talking about dancing!" The Doctor said innocently,
"It didn't look like talking." Jack mutters,
"Didn't feel like dancing." I call out after him, "Dance with Rose I'm tired." The Doctor looks at me, rather naïvely.
XXX
Jack had banished me from his seat so I sat on his lap as he talked to Rose, the Doctor was sulking, not taking part in the conversation,
"So, you used to BE a Time Agent - now you're trying to con them?" She repeated to make sure she had it right, I nod my head,
"If it makes me sound any better, it's not for the money." he offers
"No but it is a nice side bonus isn't it?" he grins and nods at my counter argument,
"For what?" she asked
"Woke up one day when I was working for them - found they'd stolen two years of my memories. I'd like them back." I squeeze his arm,
"They stole your memories?" Rose asked in disbelief,
"You know I never liked Time agents they mess up way to many events." I mutter,
"Two years of my life. No idea what I did." Jack admitted ashamed, The Doctor was watching him. "Your friend over there doesn't trust me. And for all I know... he's right not to." just as Rose opens her mouth to speak the computer bleeps. "Okay, we're good to go." I get up from his lap and sit down on the bed, the Doctor looks up.
"Crash site?" Jack asked,
"Yep." I say popping the 'p'.
XXX
The ride there was silent, but then again there was a lot at stake, we had been here for a few minutes now and we began to make our way over to the rail station near the bomb site and peer over the barbed wire.
"There it is." Jack announces and then he spots one of his friends on duty, I couldn't remember his name but he was pacing up and down. "Ay, they've got Algy on duty. Must be important." he decides,
"We've gotta get past." the Doctor whispers,
"The words 'distract the guard' head in mine and Alex's general direction." Rose said straightening her top,
"Sorry sweetie but they don't come our way this time." I try to dissuade
"Yeah I don't think that'd be such a good idea." Jack joins in,
"Don't worry... we can handle it." Rose insists,
"Rose..." I try,
"I've got to know Algy quite well since I've been in town. Trust me. You're not his type. I'll distract him." and with that Jack walks away, I don't follow what with him being like my brother it would be pretty weird to see him flirt, especially when I've seen him with Ianto before, "Don't wait up." he called, I shake my head with a smile, Rose and the Doctor look at each other.
"Relax, he's a 51st century guy. He's just a bit more flexible when it comes to dancing." the Doctor said with a grin,
"HOW flexible?" Rose demanded, I grin putting my arm around her shoulders,
"You know when you caught that guy talking about how flexible I am in bed?" she cringed but nodded, "Well, he can do that to anything." I looked over to the Doctor to see he seemed to have gone a bit pink at my comment, I give him a sly wink,
"Well, by his time, you lot have spread out across half the galaxy." The Doctor said carrying on my explanation,
"Meaning?" Rose prompted,
"So many species, so little time..." he grinned rubbing his hands together,
"What, that's what we do when we get out there? That's our mission? We seek new life, and... and..." she was at a loss for words,
"Dance." the Doctor snickered,
"Put it this way Rosie, he'd do the horazontle (Sorry for the spelling.) tango with anything that has a pulse." Jack jumps down onto the rail track on the bomb site, where Algy is pacing they exchange a few words before he starts coughing, falling to his knees. Before our eyes, his face transforms into a gas mask. Jack is horror-struck. The other soldiers begin to hurry over. I felt slightly sick at what I had just seen.
"Stay back!" The Doctor shouted at the advancing men,
"You men! Stay away!" Jack ordered, we rush over to Jack, and Algy - who is lying on the floor, lifeless. Rose stares down at him in shock.
"The effect's become air-borne. Accelerating." I state looking at the man turned inner child,
"What's keeping US safe?" Rose questioned,
"Nothing." The Doctor stated,
"Not a bloody thing." I followed more bluntly, the air-raid siren sounds. Jack looks up at the sky,
"Ah, here they come again." he said,
"All we need. Didn't you say a bomb was gonna land... HERE?" Rose asked with a panicked look, I grin and nod Jack also nods with less enthusiasm. Someone-Nancy-is singing in the background.
"Never mind about that. If the contaminants air-borne now, there's hours left." the Doctor informs,
"For what?" Jack inquired,
"'Til nothing. 'Til forever. For the entire human race. And can anyone else hear singing?" he asked randomly, she really did have a nice voice, it's coming from the shed in which Nancy has been locked up, I think it was anyway.
Rock-a-by baby, on the tree tops,
when the wind blows the cradle will rock...
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
and down will come baby, cradle and all.
The doctor opens the door and pokes his head in, and then motions for her to keep on singing
"Rock-a-by baby..." she shakes her cuffed hand,
on the tree tops, when the wind blows the cradle will rock...
The Doctor approaches her, taking his sonic screwdriver out of his jacket pocket and flicks it on beginning to unlock her handcuffs, Rose and Jack appear in the doorway with me then the handcuffs snap open, Nancy stands, and we all leave the shed, leaving Jenkins fast asleep.
XXX
We headed to the medical transporter, and the closer I got the more my stomach hurt, the boys uncover the med ship as Nancy, Rose and I watch,
"You see? Just an ambulance." Jack says pointedly to the doctor, this seemed to draw Nancy's attention,
"That's an ambulance?" she asked, Rose placed an arm around her shoulder,
"It's hard to explain, it's... it's from another world." she struggled to explain,
"They've been trying to get in." Jack observes looking at the controls,
"Of COURSE they have." the doctor snaps, Jack begins to enter the code. "They think they've got their hands on Hitler's latest secret weapon. What're you doing?" he finally asks,
"Well, the sooner you see this thing is empty, the sooner you'll see I had nothing to do with it." Jack explained and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him, he had no idea how wrong he was... The controls explode with sparks, and we all jump backwards as the alarm goes off. "Didn't happen last time." he muttered,
"It hadn't crashed last time. They're the emergency protocols." the Doctor argued,
"Doctor, what IS that?" Rose finally asked, A red light on the control panel flashes. "Doctor!" she shouts pointing over to the other side of the bomb site, the gates were shaking,
"Captain, secure those gates!" the Doctor ordered,
"Why?" he questions, I sigh
"Jack don't argue, lets go." I snap pulling him in the direction of the gates, getting there Jack and I push on the gate one side each and it slams shut. "Come on back we go." I walked back and sat on the med ship whilst they worked on getting the thing open. God my stomach hurt.
XXX
Jack opens the hatch of the med-ship.
"It's empty. Look at it." he says to the both of us, I groan, as Rose and Nancy join us.
"Jack you're an idiot." I deadpan
"What do you expect in a Chula medical transporter? Bandages? Cough drops? Rose?" the Doctor asked looking at her.
"I dunno." she answers looking clueless.
"Yes, you do." he says holding his hands up in the same gesture he had on Jacks ship and it hits her
"Nanogenes!" she exclaims, the doctor turns to Jack,
"It wasn't empty, Captain. There was enough nanogenes in there to rebuild a species." Jack pales considerably and looks quite shaken,
"Oh, God." he gasps finally understanding what he's done.
"Getting it now, are we? When the ship crashes, the nanogenes escape. Billions upon billions of them, ready to fix all the cuts and bruises in the whole world. But what they find first is a dead child, probably killed earlier that night and wearing a gas mask." he explains with a bit of venom in his voice,
"And they brought him back to life? They can DO that?" Rose asked skeptically,
"What's life? Life's easy. A quirk of matter. Nature's way of keeping meat fresh. Nothing to a nanogene. One problem, though - these nanogenes - they're not like the ones on your ship. This lot have never seen a human being before. Don't know what a human being's supposed to look like." as he says this Jack, Rose and Nancy soak in all the words, "All they've got to go on is one little body, and there's not a lot left. But they carry right on. They do what they're programmed to do, they patch it up. Can't tell what's gas mask and what's skull, but they do their best. Then off they fly - off they go, work to be done. 'Cos you see NOW they THINK they know what people should look like and it's time to fix all the rest." he said before I interrupt he was close to shouting
"And they won't ever stop. They won't ever, ever stop. The entire Human Race is gonna be torn down and rebuilt in the form of one terrified child looking for its mother, and NOTHING in the world can stop it." I say softly, Jack is abashed, shaken.
"I didn't know." Jack says adamantly, The Doctor fixes him with a cold stare for a few seconds, and then goes back to examining the med-ship, starting work with his sonic screwdriver Nancy stares into the distance, beyond the fence the gas mask people have arrived, still calling 'mummy' and it still sends shivers up my spine.
"Rose?" Nancy asked scared, Rose and I head over to the frightened girl, following her gaze we see the gas mask people stumble towards us over the rail-track. They are quite a distance away, but still too close for comfort. Rose rushes back to the med-ship, and looks again at the flashing red light on the control panel. I don't leave Nancy's side as I look out at them,
"It's bringing the gas mask people here, isn't it?" Rose asked the Doctor,
"The ship thinks it's under attack. It's calling up the troops. Standard protocol." he explains not looking over, they were getting closer by the minute,
"But... the gas mask people aren't troops..." Rose contradicts,
"They are now. This is a battle-field ambulance. The nanogenes don't just fix you up - they get you ready for the front line. Equip you, programme you." he bites out, his experience from the war coming through in his voice,
"That's why the Child's so strong. Why it could do that phoning thing." Rose realises.
"Uh huh." I call over, they were still getting closer and Nancy was beginning to panic slightly,
"It's a fully equipped Chula warrior, yes. All that weapons tech in the hands of a hysterical four year old - looking for his mummy. And now there's an army of them." the Doctor continues to speak as though I had not made a sound, the gas mask people surrounded the fence. The four of them look around nervously whilst I keep a calm face. We win I know this.
"Why don't they attack?" Jack asked as he watched the children sway from side to side,
"Good little soldiers. Waiting for their commander." the Doctor answers still looking around,
"The child?" Jack asked in disbelief,
"Jamie." Nancy and I corrected, I hadn't called him the child unless I had to, he was Jamie,
"What?" Jack questioned in confusion,
"Not 'the child'. Jamie." Nancy snaps glaring at him, The Doctor looks at her.
"So, how long until the bomb falls?" Rose asked looking at the sky nervously,
"Any second." Jack informs looking at his watch,
"What's the matter, Captain? Bit close to the volcano for you?" the Doctor bit out,
"Doctor enough, it isn't helping matters yes he did this but what about in 1869 who's fault was that? Don't blame him when you've made the same mistake." I snarl, he had no right to do this when he had done the same and worse.
"He's just a little boy." Nancy sobbed,
"I know." the Doctor said softly,
"He's just a little boy who wants his mummy." she continued,
"I know. There isn't a little boy born who wouldn't tear the world apart to save his mummy. And this little boy can." the Doctor said,
"So what're we gonna DO?" Rose asked
"I don't know." he answered, Rose sighs. Tears well in Nancy's eyes.
"She really doesn't like those words you know." I call not looking over.
"It's my fault." Nancy laments, the calls of 'mummy' start,
"No." the Doctor denies,
"It is. It's all my fault." Nancy said again, the calls of 'mummy' become louder,
"How can it be your-" the Doctor start to ask gently before cutting off looking around at the gas mask people, positioned behind the fence, calling for their mummy - and then back at Nancy, who is sobbing uncontrollably. He stares at her and then it dawns on him...
"Nancy, what age are you? Twenty? Twenty-one? Older than you look, yes?" he asked putting the pieces together, 'give the man a medal.' I think sarcastically, a bomb lands nearby. Rose and Jack flinch.
"Doctor - that bomb. We've got seconds." Jack warns, another lands.
"You can teleport us out." Rose said to Jack, the Doctor is paying them no attention, eyes fixed on the sobbing Nancy.
"Not you guys. The nav-com's back online. Gonna take too long to override the protocols." Jack said sadly,
"So it's volcano day. Do what you've got to do." the Doctor snaps not looking away from Nancy,
"Jack?" Rose asks betrayal in her voice, Jack looks at us almost apologetically. He makes his decision and teleports himself out.
"How old were you five years ago? Fifteen? Sixteen? Old enough to give birth, anyway." the Doctor says to Nancy answering his own question. Nancy, still sobbing, glances up at him and then away again, shame faced. "He's not your brother, is he?" he questioned gently, Nancy shakes her head, tearful. "A teenage single mother in 1941. So you hid. You lied." Nancy nods, tears streaming down her face. "You even lied to him." he whispered, Nancy broke down even more, the gates swing open, Jamie standing at the forefront of an army of gas mask people, ready to charge.
"Are you my mummy?" he asks, I cringe, how must she feel hearing that?
"He's gonna keep asking, Nancy. He's never gonna stop. Tell him." the Doctor coaxed softly, she gives no answer, the gas mask people begin to walk forward. "Nancy... the future of the human race is in your hands. Trust me... and tell him." Nancy sniffs, still tearful. Jamie approaching us.
"Are you my mummy?" he asked again, the Doctor gives Nancy a gentle push in the direction of the Child. "Are you my mummy? Are you my mummy?" he kept asking, finally Nancy whispers,
"Yes." then again in a stronger voice "Yes. I AM your mummy." I felt tears sting my eyes, this was another thing I wouldn't be able to experiance... I wouldn't be able to look at a child and see my own features looking back at me... Nancy faces him as he slowly forward.
"Mummy?" he asked,
"I'm here." Nancy calls out,
"Are you my mummy?" I flinch, Nancy kneels before him,
"I'm here." she whispers,
"Are you my mummy?" Jamie asked again, each time I flinched,
"Yes." she answers once more he voice a slightly broken whisper,
"He doesn't understand. There's not enough of him left." the Doctor says to us, Nancy looks at her little boy.
"I am your mummy. I will always be your mummy. I'm so sorry." Nancy admits tearfully, and the tears that sting my eyes spill down my cheeks, she takes him into her arms, no longer caring what will happen, the nanogenes surround them, making them glow with a golden light and a small smile lit my face. "I am so, so sorry." She continues to apologise
"What's happening?" Rose asked, Nancy, still hugging her little boy, has her eyes closed and is stroking his hair. "Doctor, it's changing her, we should-" I grab her arm to hold her back as the doctor holds his out also,
"Shh!" he whispers excitedly, he stares intently at the two of them surrounded by the nanogenes. "Come on, please. Come on, you CLEVER little nanogenes - figure it out! The mother. She's the mother! There's gotta be enough information, figure it out!" he pleads,
"What's happening?" Rose asked looking at them in awe and worry,
"See? Recognizing the same DNA." he says pointing to the nanogenes, Nancy falls away from the child to the ground, and the nanogenes disappear. The Doctor and Rose rush over, the Doctor staring down at the child, hardly daring to hope. I hadn't moved from my spot, "Oh, come on. Give me a day like this. Give me this one." i hear him beg, he reaches out to the gas mask... and removes it, revealing a perfectly ordinary, very sweet little boy underneath. Nancy stares in delighted wonder and the Doctor laughs ecstatically. He lifts the little boy into the air, swinging him around and I finally let out a quiet sob. "Ah-ha-ha! Welcome back! Twenty years 'til pop music - you're gonna love it." he exclaims with a laugh, and he hugs Jamie, still laughing.
"What happened?" Nancy asked in wonder,
"The nanogenes recognised the superior information - the parent DNA. They didn't change YOU because YOU changed them! Haha!" he explained as he placed Jamie in front of her, "Mother knows best!" he beamed, Nancy is nearly crying from happiness
"Jamie...!" A bomb lands nearby breaking the tender moment and I wipe my tears looking at the sky waiting for Jack to appear.
"Doctor, that bomb..." I hear Rose,
"Taken care of it." the Doctor said unconcerned,
"How?" Rose asked in wonder
"Psychology!" he answers gesturing between Jamie and Nancy, the bomb plummets towards us... and is snatched out of the air by a blue force field, Jacks tractor beam. A moment later, Jack appears hovering in the tunnel of light. He calls down to us.
"Doctor!"
"Good lad!" the alien praises,
"The bomb's already commenced detonation. I've put it in stasis but it won't last long." Jack shouted,
"Change of plan - don't need the bomb. Can you get rid of it? Safely as you can?" he asked,
"Rose?" Jack bellowed,
"Yeah?" she shouted back,
"Goodbye. Princess-"
"I'll see you soon Jack." I shouted not letting him say the word that hurts people time and again, he disappears. Rose looks slightly let down - and then he reappears. "By the way - love the tee-shirt." He grins. Rose returns the grin, pulling the tee-shirt down embarrassedly. Jack disappears Doctor walks a few paces away, staring intently at his hands, he summoned the nanogenes and they flutter around his hands.
"What're you doing?" Rose questioned,
"Software patch. Gonna email the upgrade. You want moves, Rose? I'll give you moves." he said cockily, i force a grin, as he throws the nanogenes away from him, towards the gasmask people who are still milling around on the train track. The Doctor gives his widest grin as the gas mask people fall to the floor, the nanogenes surrounding them. "Everybody lives, Rose, 'Lexa. Just this once. Everybody lives!" he shouts in pure joy, and the gas mask people get to their feet - except they are no longer gas mask people, they're normal human beings. The Doctor bounds over to Doctor Constantine. "Doctor Constantine. Who never left his patients. Back on your feet, constant doctor! World doesn't wanna get by without you just yet, and I don't blame it one bit." he gesture to the people around us, "These are your patients. All better, now!"
"Yes, yes... so it seems. They also seem to be standing around in a disused railway station. Is there any particular reason for that?" The good doctor asked utterly baffled,
"Yeah, well, you know - cutbacks. Listen, whatever was wrong with them in the past, you're probably gonna find that they're cured. Just tell them what a great doctor you are. Don't make a big thing of it. Okay?" the alien Doctor said beaming and he rushes back to Rose and I.
"Right, you lot! Lots to do! Beat the Germans, save the world - don't forget the Welfare State!" he shouts from on top of the med ship, Constantine smiles. He and his patients begin to walk away, and the Doctor bends down to the control. He speaks to us. "Setting this to self-destruct, soon as everybody's clear. History says there was an explosion here. Who am I to argue with history?" he asked,
"Usually the first in line." Rose and I answer with a grin. The Doctor looks at us and grins. We grin back.
XXX
We enter the TARDIS, the Doctor still chatting away happily.
"The nanogenes will clean up the mess and switch themselves off - because I just told them to. Nancy and Jamie will go to Doctor Constantine for help - ditto - all in all, all things considered - fantastic!" Rose smiles at his enthusiasm.
"Look at you, beaming away like you're Father Christmas!" she says with a fond beam...
"Who says I'm not, red-bicycle-when-you-were-twelve?" he contradicts pointing at her,
"What?!" she demanded startled,
"And everybody lives, Rose! Everybody lives!" he throws his arms wide to embrace the moment, he hits a switch on the console, "I need more days like this."
"Doctor..." Rose asks hesitantly,
"Go on, ask me anything. I'm on FIRE!" he exclaimed with a huge grin,
"What about Jack?" she asked, quietly, the Doctor's smile fades, and he carries on working, as though he doesn't want to answer this. "Why'd he say goodbye?" she pressed, still no answer. The Doctor stares intently at the console.
XXX
I open the TARDIS door and see Jack sitting the chair holding a drink and talking,
"Funny thing... last time I was sentenced to death, I ordered four hyper-vodkas for my breakfast. All a bit of a blur after that. Woke up in bed with BOTH my executioners. Hmm, lovely couple. They stayed in touch!" he pauses before adding a thoughtful, "Can't say that about most executioners." he lets out another laugh "Anyway. Thanks for everything, computer. It's been great."
"Well then now that you've made you goodbye, I think it's time we get out of here." I say as Moonlight serenade plays in the background Rose and the Doctor attempting too dance. Jack spins around looking at me in shock.
"Princess?" he asked uncertainly, rolling my eyes I stride forward grab his hand and yank him to his feet and then continue to drag him from his ship into the TARDIS. Rose and the Doctor are waltzing around to 'Moonlight Serenade'. Rose is teaching the Doctor dances moves, making okaying noises as they dance. Jack looks around at the sheer size of the place, compared with the outside and I loved the look on his face.
"Right, and turn..." Rose instructs, He spins her around, getting her arm all twisted.
"Okay, okay, try and spin me again, but this time - don't get my arm up my back!" she said with an exasperated sigh, The Doctor looks sheepish. "No extra points for a half-nelson." the Doctor sounding put out complains
"I'm SURE I used to know this stuff." he looks at Jack calling over, "Close the door, will you. Your ship's about to blow up - there's gonna be a draft."
"I got it." I say holding my hand up and clicking my fingers closing the doors, Rose grins and leans against one of the pillars. The Doctor flicks a switch and the engines start up. "Welcome to the TARDIS." he continues,
"Much bigger on the inside..." Jack says with a grin,
"You'd better be." The Doctor says,
"I think what the Doctor's TRYING to say is... you may cut in." Rose said holding her hand out, they grin and she takes his hand, as if to dance with him.
"Rose! I've just remembered!" the Doctor exclaims,
"What?" she asked curiously, and 'In The Mood' blares out of the speakers - wherever they are. Lights flash all around the room, and the Doctor moves towards Rose in time to the music, clicking his fingers.
"I can dance!" he says excitedly,
"Actually, Doctor... I thought Jack might like this dance." Rose said hesitant,
"He would which is why he's going to dance with me, we never did finish our dance did we." I said walking over to the Doctor and taking his hand as he grinned, Jack and Rose grin as they to start to dance to the music. He spins me perfectly. Jack and Rose watches us as they dance with big smiles on their faces as we dance around the console room, perfect partners. The Doctor suddenly throws me backwards over his arm, earning a whoop of delight from Rose and a gasp of surprise from me. Jack rolls his eyes, still smiling and dips Rose getting her to giggle. Rose pulls herself up, and sags onto his shoulder.
after a while I was just sitting on the jump seat the music was now Moonlight serenade again, Rose had shown Jack to a room before going too her own.
"You know." I said suddenly, drawing the doctor's attention "Ever since I found out I was going to die," he flinched "I've been going over the things that I'm never going to be able to do... I wasn't going to meet the people that you get to, not now... but that was all I thought about, I'm not going to be able to travel with you... Today really gave me another side of things..." I hiccup, trying to breathe properly, "I'm never going to be able to get married, but the one thing that kills me inside... I'm never going to have a child call me mummy..." I sob, the doctor walks over to me and pulls me into his arms, "And it j-just hurts so much, I want all of the normal things and I can't have them... Is it really to much to ask, why can't I have that?" I cry for a few minutes before realising that I was crying on the Doctor, pulling myself back I stop crying "Sorry, I uh- I'm gonna head to bed, get some sleep." I say walking away before he can speak and heading to my room.
Walking into the room I look at my desk and see the vortex manipulator, I could go see Jack... my Jack. He said he wanted to do a check up. So that's what I did, I got the manipulator strapped it to my wrist and set the co-ordinates,
'Torchwood hub. November 22nd. 2005.' and then I was on a floor, in the hub... in front of Jack.
"Jackie." I croak "I'm here for my appointment." I try with a smile, giving me a hand up we go to the med scanner getting Owen to run the scan and diagnostics. He went pale at the readings "So how am I looking doc?" I question...
"Andy." his voice cracks.
"That bad huh?" I ask with a tilt of my head,
"You've only got a week and a half left at most..." my forced smile drops for a second before I put it back in place,
"Right then, I had better make the most of it." I say getting up, "Jack can I talk to you in the office?" I ask before walking out of the med-center and to Jacks office, Jack closes the door behind him and I launch myself into his arms and just let go of the tears again. Is this my punishment?
XXX
Yeah I know really late I started writing this just after Christmas, but then I got distracted, first by other 'Doctor Who?' fanfics, and then I got into 'Sherlock', and then I started to read 'Vampire Diaries', I am happy to announce I have moved on from Klaus and am now an Elijah fan. I still like Klaus don't get me wrong he is really cute, but I just like the older mature type at the minute. Which now leads me to the last distraction and loss of motivation for this chapter, I started to write a vampire diaries fanfic. Elijah/OC it's not up yet and wont be for a while because I want to write the season out before posting it and having you all wait weeks for a new chapter if you do indeed read it.
I haven't decided on a name or summary yet so I cant give you an out line...
Now onto what you think of this chapter, Yeah there's a lot of angst for me, I nearly cried myself when she cried to the Doctor... Not long until the end of the story now, please keep reading. And leave a review if you could, I get so little for this story but a lot of readers...
Thanks for reading and sorry for the late update.
Shadow OUT!
