It was New Years' Eve. On this day, my family would usually go to the shrine and pray for luck. As a traditional custom, my mother and I would help each other out in wearing the kimono. For this New Year, I had decided to wear purple coloured kimono, with dark purple coloured obi (sash) around the body, complete with sandals. My hair was tied to a bun and I pinned it neatly to make sure it stayed at its position throughout the night.
We left for the shrine in the evening as the station will be fully packed with people. There were a lot of people wearing the traditional costumes too. The journey to the shrine will take about 40 minutes by train. I texted Murasakibara if he is going to the shrine. I never celebrated the New Year with other people aside from my family members and sometimes with friends who happened to go to the same shrine as I do.
"Shrine? Yeah, I am going. Which shrine are you heading to?"
"Meiji shrine. What about you, Atsushi?"
"Likewise. See you later."
"OK. See you later."
My heart raced nervously when I knew Murasakibara is also going to the same shrine as my family does. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but I'm very excited to see Atsushi and what he'll be wearing. Although secretly I wished he would wear the men's kimono for a more traditional feel.
When we arrived at the shrine, many shrine goers crowded the place. I had to stay close to my parents to make sure I won't get lost. This wasn't my first time coming to this shrine but my parents were scared that I'll be kidnapped or something if I don't stay within their eye sights. Being the only daughter is an important thing to my parents.
After praying, I asked my parents for permission if they allowed me to go with a friend for the rest of the night. They asked me about this 'friend' of mine, and I told them that he is a classmate. Suspicious as they were about this 'friend', they wanted to see him. I wasn't sure if my parents realized at that point that Murasakibara is my boyfriend but they insisted of seeing him first, before letting me off.
My parents and I decided to wait for Murasakibara at the ramen shop. It was easy to spot a tall purple-head giant coming to our way and I stood up to greet Murasakibara. I knew I was nervous of my parents meeting him because there were times when I told them about Mura-kun and my mom was definitely interested in meeting this 'Mura-kun'.
"Hajimemashite, Murasakibara desu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu." (Nice to meet you, I'm Murasakibara. Please treat me well.)
My parents were shocked by his height as he is taller than my parents. I am born to family with 'tall' genetics but even Mura-kun beat both of my parents, height-wise. Mura-kun was wearing what I had imagined: Men's kimono. He sat beside me, facing my parents. The situation wasn't tense but I can't help but to think that I wouldn't be able to spend time with Atsushi after this meet.
"My daughter wishes to meet up with you, Murasakibara-kun. She is my only daughter and if anything happens to her, I won't forgive you." My father said it sternly and I admit, he wasn't like this for most of the time. Murasakibara's expression was a bit serious too, not the droopy eyes "I'm-not-interested" look. I guess my father can be overprotective, unlike my mom.
"Darling, let her go out with him. I'm sure both of them will be fine, they're mature now. Don't worry too much." My mother told my father with her hands over his. She knew I'll be OK since I told her about me going out with Mura-kun a couple of times, to which thank God she never told my father about it, or otherwise I would've locked up in the house.
"Don't worry; I will make sure your daughter is safe and sound." Murasakibara said with determination as I saw it in his eyes. I smiled in embarrassment as I just had an idea where Mura-kun is my security guard, protecting me wherever I go. I didn't let this imagination slid too far away from my main intention, which was to get my parents (especially my father's) approval. I looked up to my father, and said "Daddy, I'll take care of myself too! I promise!" He looked at me and Murasakibara before giving his approval look.
"Alright. Stay safe then you two."
I was happy when my father gave us the approval to go out on my own. Murasakibara and I stood up from our seat, bowed to my parents and thanking them before we took our leave. Once out of their sight, I cuddled Mura-kun's arm as I needed warmth.
"I hope my father didn't scare you, Atsushi. He is very protective of his only daughter."
"He did… But I tried not to show my nervousness too much…" I chuckled when I heard what Mura-kun had just said. "By the way, you looked really beautiful today, with your hair and kimono and all…" He said that as he looked at me. My eyes met his and shy away from his gaze.
"Arigato, Atsushi. I liked what you're wearing today too. It's like…." I stopped at what I was about to say because thinking about it was embarrassing.
"Like…?" Murasakibara questioned right after, he wasn't too sure what him wearing men's kimono is.
"Like we had just gotten married" I blurted out low in voice, unable to hide the pink flush. Murasakibara gave me small peck in the cheek to my surprise, and teased, "I thought we were already?" I hit him at his shoulders lightly before we both broke out in laughter.
"You know… I purposely wore a purple kimono today because I was hoping to go out with you in this, and I'm glad we are…" I said as we reached to an open area where fireworks were about to light up.
"Oh… It doesn't matter what colour anyways, you would still be beautiful…" I grinned at Mura-kun's words and stood closely next to him. Our hands were held together, waiting for the fireworks. "Atsushi, thank you for being here with me, I really appreciate it."
"Not a big deal. I'm here because you asked me to, and I don't mind coming since it's for you…" I turned to Mura-kun and hugged him close to me. My hands wrapped around his body and I felt his hands around my waist. It was a silent and enjoyable moment. No words to describe what I felt, but the emotions that was poured in; I felt it with this hug.
A sudden loud bang broke out in the sky, causing me to hug tightly at Atsushi due to a sudden shock, only to realize it was just the fireworks dashing onto the night sky. I looked up at the fireworks, being mesmerized by the colours, the patterns and the scenery. Both of us witnessed the New Year's fireworks display. It was for a long duration but nevertheless, enjoyable.
"Happy New Year, Atsushi." I said to him when the fireworks ended. "I hope this year we will get along well, and…"
"and…?"
"and… and I love you."
There wasn't any reply from Mura-kun but he took me by the lips and kissed me. His lips just stayed at mine without any movement for about 5 seconds, before our lips parted. Mura-kun looked at me in the with his purpled-eyes, saying "I love you too. This year we'll spend more quality time together. Happy New Year."
