Chapter Ten

BPOV

I hadn't heard from Edward since he dropped me off but Rosalie had text me to let me know that everything was packed and they would be by the diner at six to pick us up. I was glad that we were going to have some time alone, well together, but alone in some retrospect. The comment he made about the bra I deliberately left in his room had me hot and bothered for most of the day.

Things went pretty smoothly when I got to the diner for my first shift. Sam was running the shift again and left me with Alice to show me around. After a few broken glasses behind the bar Sam decided to get me waiting a few tables thinking that maybe taking orders would be more up my alley. A decision I'm sure he was regretting right away as soon as Mike Newton walked into the restaurant and placed his hands firmly on my ass.

I'd been so distracted by everything that was going on I had found my patience was wearing thing. Not to mention I hadn't expected my first night on the job to end with Alice laughing behind me as Sam handed over an ice pack that I immediately put on my knuckles.

"Bastard had it coming," Alice laughed as she wiped down the counter trying to suppress her laughter as I was sure she was reliving the moment my fist made contact with Newton's face.

"You're a feisty one that's for sure," Sam teased, "you two can probably head off anyway. We've got things covered."

"Are you sure?" I asked, "I spent the last twenty minutes sitting down."

"Watching Newton get beaten by a girl was well worth it," Sam smirked; Alice took off her apron folding it over her arms. "Have a good weekend guys."

We bid our farewells walking out of the restaurant with the icepack still pressed firmly to my hand. I sensed him near before I saw him, my heart skipped a beat when I saw him leaning against the side of his Volvo standing next to Jasper engaged in a conversation.

"Is Jasper single?" Alice interrupted my thoughts.

"Yes," I answered without thinking, I was too focused on my secret boyfriend to even acknowledge her fully as she linked her arm with me leading us over to the two cars.

"Hurt yourself straightening your hair?" Emmett's loud voice boomed from the red truck beside Edward's Volvo. Edward's hands dropped from his pocket reaching for me from what I assumed were instinct.

"What did you do?" He asked gently pulling back the ice pack to look closer.

"She decked Newton for touching her ass," Alice said proudly reminding me we weren't alone. I pulled my hand away from Edward's touch with a small whimper. His eyes burnt into mine when I replaced the icepack to the hand.

"Where'd you get the truck Emmett?" I asked noticing the red vehicle.

"Charlie bought it for you actually," Emmett answered, "said he thought it was time with you working and all that you had your own vehicle."

"Okay, so Rose and I will drive the truck and follow you guys in Edward's car." Emmett pointed out, "we need to hit the road."

"We can discuss accident prone Bella's adventures when we get set up," Rose smirked, "among other things."

There was silence as Edward opened up the door for me in a gesture I knew Alice would be questioning me on later, I pushed it to the back of my mind as we started on the drive and I stole glances at Edward. His hair was messier than normal, he gripped his temple numerous times, a habit I noticed he did a lot after everything in Phoenix. He reached across to me a few times out of habit before reaching back before we even touched.

It was just under half hour before we reached La Push; the beach was beautiful in the moonlight. We spent around half hour setting up the tents while the boys set up our campfire and we started to think about dinner. I sat on a log resting my hand in my lap when everyone slowly descended around us each taking a seat passing around drinks and a bag of chips. I had Alice on one side and Edward on the other with a first aid kit.

"I wish you guys could have seen it," Alice piped up excitedly referring back to the incident with Mike. "He fell to the ground faster than anything I've ever seen."

Jasper sat beside her while Emmett and Rosalie stretched out on the ground infront of the log on the blanket they'd set up. Tension was in the air as all of us except for Alice knew we wanted to discuss the voicemail. Edward was checking out the swelling which had started to go down but was still a little purple.

"Are you okay?" Edward whispered, I nodded just relishing his touch.

"When do you guy go back to Phoenix?" Alice asked.

"Two days," Jasper admitted. "You should come to Phoenix, you would like it there."

"Maybe I could get Renee to let us stay for a bit before our final year?" I suggested, hoping that maybe creating some plans would make it easier for Alice to not hate me straight away.

"Alright," Rosalie turned around so her back was to the warmth of the fire. "Can we just get rid of the elephant in the room?"

"What elephant?" Alice asked confused. I choked slightly as Edward released my hand into my lap and inched himself away from me. With everything that happened this morning I hadn't really given enough time to think of a plan of attack to talk to Alice about this. She was going to hate me; there was no way about it. "Why are you all so serious?"

"Alice," Edward started turning so he could see his sister completely, giving her his attention. His lips curled into a frown when Jasper placed one hand around Alice's waist pulling her close. "We need to talk."

"About?"

"Phoenix."

Her breath hitched and we all watched her carefully, the truth was we all knew and she didn't. It wasn't right to lie to her anymore, I didn't want to lose her but she needed to know that I'd been lying to her, and she needed to know the truth about Carlina.

Her breathing picked up and tears slowly started to form in her eyes but fought against their release.

"Alice," I whispered. "I-."

"I didn't force Carlina to run away with me," Edward blurted out faster than any of us could react.

"What?"

"I wasn't dating Carlina," Edward watched his sister carefully with each word that crossed his lips.

"What are you talking about?" Her voice went up a pitch but she spoke somewhat calmly. "You took my best friend and were off gallivanting with her like she was the love of your life."

"No I didn't." His voice was firm but even I could tell the agitation at her assumption. "I never looked at her that."

"Don't lie to me Edward, I'm not stupid."

"Then stop acting like it," Edward spat back at her. "You are acting like an ignorant brat, shut up and-"

I couldn't take it anymore. "Carlina was fucking my boyfriend." Alice dropped her cup on the ground and stared at me. "Can you to stop the god damn fighting." Glaring between the two I forced myself to take a deep breath knowing that Alice was in fact an innocent party of this.

"You're lying," Alice whispered, "she didn't have a boyfriend."

"Oh she did," I told her matter of factly. "They were so into each other that she two months pregnant when she came to Phoenix."

"I took her to Phoenix because she needed to tell him," Edward admitted, "I took her as her friend, she needed support."

"Edward didn't know about Zack until he caught Zack and I arguing," I admitted with the memories flashing across my mind with fresh hurt. "Zack played it off as casual infront of me, still trying to maintain his relationship with me."

"Where were you when she died?" Alice asked, the one question we all knew was coming, this was the moment of truth.

"Just tell her will you," Rose bit back throwing back the drink in her hand quicker than she thought possible. "We have more important things to worry about."

"What is Rosalie talking about?" I shifted nervously in my seat. "Edward? Where were you?"

"I was with Bella," Edward admitted. "By her side in hospital."

"Oh," Alice said calmly. "Why?"

"It was the night before we'd decided to head back home, Carlina had enough of Zack denying her and we were having one final catch up with our new friends." He pointed at Emmett and Jasper as he said this. "Despite what you think Bella, Jasper and I are actually very good friends, he's been keeping an eye on you for me." I smiled at Jasper knowing how much he had been there for me after he returned back to Forks. "She was drunk and high when I took her back to the hotel. We didn't make it, a drunk driver hit the side of the car."

"Why didn't you save her?" Alice asked seriously.

"Because he saved me," I whispered to her, tears falling down my own cheeks as everything clicked into place. My guilt, his guilt, everything. "If he didn't love me he would have saved her instead."

"Bella," Emmett growled, "he didn't save you only because he loved you. He did go back for Carlina."

Edward looked at him stunned. "He pulled you out of the car, when he got closer to the car it caught fire."

"Emmett and I were a few cars behind when we stopped and saw," Rosalie looked down at her empty cup lost in thought. "I'm glad he got you out Bella."

"Why are you telling me all this? Why now?"

"I didn't want to lie to you Alice," I told her honestly, "but I didn't want to lose your friendship either."

"Why would you lose my friendship? It's not your fault Carlina died."

"I've been dating Bella for over a year now," Edward linked his fingers with mine as if to prove the point.

"Okay."

"Okay?" Edward asked as my mouth dropped. "That's it? Okay?"

"You really think I'm stupid don't you?" She smirked right in my direction. "Next time you decide to have sex with my brother you might want to remember how thin the walls are."

I couldn't fight the blush that crept onto my face as Emmett and Rosalie burst out laughing.

"Fuck you Emmett," I threw the bag of chips at him.

"So you are okay with your brother and I?"

"Perfectly okay," Alice smiled. "He just needs to play nice with Jasper now since he'll be around a lot more."

"Will I?" Jasper said from his spot beside her.

"If you'd like?"
