Another Beginning
Chapter Ten
...
Hazel was screwed. Really screwed. It made her wonder who on Earth had so little common sense they thought it would be a good idea to give an 11 year old security clearance of a level 8 agent. She really needed to have a talk with her uncle, ASAP.
Well, as soon as she finished dealing with the situation at hand. If she ever managed to deal with it, that is. The logical part of her brain told her to make a run for it. The 'Stark-ified' part told her to not. She gulped, growing more and more uncomfortable under the man's scrutinizing gaze. Hazel found herself desperately wanting to escape, despite the fact there was a definite zero percent possibility the god could escape the glass cage.
If she hadn't been so carefully avoiding his gaze, she would've noticed the slight confusion flicker across his eyes.
"Are you not the child of Stark?" She jumped, clearly not expecting him to speak. "I can see recklessness runs through the bloodlines." His tone was icy, yet… Curious. She blinked. He stared.
"…Uncle Tony and I aren't even related by blood." She had no idea what even prompted her to say such thing. Didn't she think of Uncle Tony as family? She'd never even considered saying otherwise. Suddenly, she felt a surge of anger pass through her. Who was this man to question whether or not she was worthy to be considered family? The slight throbbing in her forehead had now grown into a burning sensation- almost as if her mind was about to be shattered to pieces. She couldn't move. "Not that any of your business." The coldness in her voice surprised even herself. It was as if all the rage and anger there was in the world had suddenly hit her in the head.
But there wasn't time to worry about petty things like how pissed off she must've sounded- if she didn't get out of the room, she was going to die.
Hazel all but scrambled back to the Infirmary- the burning sensation had dwelled down, but if anything, she felt worse. There was something in her- protesting. She wasn't even sure what it was protesting against. She felt nauseous. Clinging tightly to the bed, she gasped for air. It was as if all the air had been sucked right out of her. Maybe she was screaming. Maybe she wasn't. She tried to scream for help over and over again, up to the point her throat started to bleed- but she still couldn't hear a thing.
'OhgodohgodohgodohgodohgodI'mDying…'
The last thing she saw before a blinding white light took over was a dark figure walking towards her.
...
'The infirmary is too white' Hazel thought warily, glancing up towards the ceiling. She could feel beads of sweat dripping down her forehead, and her breaths were still somewhat ragged and shallow. 'What the hell happened?'
"Hazel!" Wincing at the sudden shrill of noise, Hazel turned to see Hermione sitting on the edge of her bed. "Oh…Sorry." Hermione muttered sheepishly, glancing at her best friend. "Are you alright now?"
"Mm… What happened?"
"Oh! You must not remember- you passed out on the Jet. Mr. Stark and Agent Coulson brought you here." Hazel frowned.
"Wait…What? No, I meant after that." It was Hermione's turn to be confused.
"Well… Nothing! A few agents took turns looking after you. I came as soon as they told me you were awake again." Hazel blinked tiredly. Nothing made sense. "Well, Mr. Stark- your uncle and I did check up on you once. You said you weren't leaving." She gave her friend a worried look. "Speaking of that…"
"No, no, no! I meant… Ugh…" She groaned, a sudden jolt of pain shooting through her forehead. "...Nothing happened after that?" Her friend shook her head, confused.
"Nothing. Well, agent Romanoff did come in once to check up on you, actually. Other than that, some agent named Jemma was told to run some tests on a sample your blood. From what she could tell, you'll be fine. Though, we do still need to get you to a medic once we land. She was the closest thing to one we had at the moment."
"We're landing?"
"Of course!" Hermione scoffed. "We need to get you to a proper Wizarding hospital, don't we?"
"…I guess." Hazel sighed, somewhat dejected. "Hey, what happened to the brown bag over by the corner?" She frowned- she was positive there had been one. It practically reeked of tuna.
"I think they put it in the fridge once they realized you weren't going to be awake any time soon. Let me get it. You must be hungry" Hermione said, tossing Hazel the brown lunch bag she had seen earlier. Seeing the troubled look on her friend's face, Hermione frowned. "What is it?"
"It's… Ham." If possible, Hermione frowned even further. It was a very frowny day for everyone, apparently.
"And…?"
"It was Tuna." Hazel muttered, shaking her head. She was going insane.
"Don't be ridiculous, Hazel. You don't even LIKE tuna…"
"That's the point!"
"Hazel, are you sure you're going to be alright? Did anything happen?" Hazel turned to stare at her friend solemnly. On one hand, she was going to sound even crazier than she usually did. Not to mention a lecture was definitely in order. I mean, really? Casually wandering around the Helicarrier when a dangerous criminal god alien thing was on the loose. Even to her, it sounded more like a suicide mission rather than a stroll in the park. Especially since she had only just recently pissed of said dangerous criminal god alien thing.
But what if she was actually in danger? It certainly felt like it. Wouldn't it better to tell them beforehand?
Then again, she was prone to having nightmares. Maybe it was just… a vivid hallucination produced by the sudden draining of her magical core. Yes, that certainly seemed possible. She was tired, achy, and it was probably just a result of her magical core telling her to dial it down a bit.
'Yes, that was probably- no, definitely it.' She thought, smiling.
"No, I'm fine, 'Mione. Just tired, I guess. Quite an eventful day, if I say so myself!" The two of laughed, not noticing the sudden flicker of ruby red in the place of the normally warm and chocolate brown eyes.
