Moon-chan: I know I'm a horrible person for making you all wait so long just for this chapter, but I promise that I know where I am going with this so no worries that I have problems with plot or anything. I hope that you're all liking the story and that some of you are still guessing Arete's origins…though I doubt it, and if you are this chapter pretty much clears up any and all of them!
Chapter 10
Arete stared at Wally and Artemis as they left the warehouse never once loosing contact with each other. It was as though the two couldn't stand to be separated again after being apart for so long. In the corner Seeress was laying on Robin's cot one arm under her head as she dreamed. Batgirl and Nightwing would occasionally glance over to check on her to make sure that she was still sleeping; apparently out of all of them she had gotten the least amount of sleep in the past two days. Watching them all the time traveling girl snuck off to a distant corner of the ware house her body shaking with an unknown emotion as she pulled a picture out of the secret compartment in her bow. It had five people in it. A tall man with an infectious smile standing with his arm around a smirking blonde woman who had her arms around two of the children in the picture the two were identical except for their genders and hair color. The boy had black hair and the girl had the same hair color as the man. Standing in the middle of it all was Arete herself the same smile as the man on her lips. This was her family and she would do anything and everything that she could make sure that nothing hurt them, past, present or future. She wasn't like Jack. She knew more than anyone else what could happen if what NightLily had sent them to do didn't go off without a hitch. She knew that there was much more at stake than what everyone else thought. This battle with the Reach would determine a lot of things most of them not even noticed by anyone other than the speedsters who had knowledge of the time stream. Looking at the picture one could see the resolve that took over the silver-green eyes of the preteen. "Don't worry Me, I'll be home soon," she whispered to the image of the blonde woman. Standing she slipped the picture back into its hiding place and started to prepare herself for what was to come. It was going to be a long week, and then she had to tie some loose ends. She glanced at the bracelet on her left wrist and knew that she couldn't use it until all was well. Until her mission was complete she could not use that piece of technology that her father had made her for her tenth birthday.
I woke to Dick leaning over me, concern obvious on his handsome visage. I blinked up at him, it wasn't normal for the usually stoic young man to show his feelings on his sleeve, though I could remember a time when he would show a lot more than this. It was apparent to anyone who knew him when he was younger that there was something that had acted as a catalyst and caused him to stop acting like the fun loving person that he used to be. "I know very well that Alfred taught you not to lean over girls while they are asleep," I stated as I rubbed the sleep out of my grey eyes. This comment caused a bark of forced laughter to escape Dick.
"Sure he did, but then Bruce went and tossed that lesson out the window, didn't he?" he retorted in response to my statement. I sighed in mock frustration. I was still too tired to muster up any real reaction, heck anyone would be.
"Give me a minute will you," I muttered as I pushed him away so that I could sit up. Mentally I was thanking Tim for the use of the cot even though I could've just ridden my bike back to my apartment on the other side of town. Once I sat up I felt dizzy. I knew why, but there were other factors too, like the fact that there was the ever constant hum of mental conversation due to M'gann's mind link with the rest of the team.
A few moments later with some added distance between myself and the former boy blunder I looked over at Speedshot who was sitting still in a corner her silvery-green eyes following the movements of the other people in the room like a hawk. She wasn't letting anything escape her, and if her mother was who I suspected her to be this was no surprise. She was well trained and she looked to be no more than twelve maybe thirteen. Watching her was like doing a study on contained electricity, at any moment the sparks could ignite. Frost wasn't too far from the girl either. It seemed that he had taken it upon himself to keep an eye on the green clad speedster. He kept muttering about his imminent demise if something happened to her, and though there was little funny about the topic I couldn't help the chuckle that escaped my lips. I was so out of it that my mind took the simplest things and perverted them into something that was not remotely similar to what it actually was. I really needed to some sleep let me tell you. Once the weirdness had passed for the most part and I was able to gain some modicum of my composure I made my way over to where the rest of the senior members of the team had gathered to start planning the upcoming battle on the Reach ships. Yet another one that I would be monitoring from here…yup, they didn't think that I could handle myself in the field even though Batman and the Flash had been my mentors in a since. The reason they gave me though wasn't that I wasn't a capable warrior; no it had to do with my power. Savage would try to take me away from the Team so that he could make use of my farseeing. It was a useful ability, but as I've already said I cannot speak of what I see until it has occurred. This didn't seem to make any kind of impression on either Babs or Dick, and they were backed up by Wally so it was a unanimous stay put order. It made me so frustrated! There was nothing that I could do, but sit and wait for the one moment where fate held the strings of all those that I cared about. If I had anything to do with it the worst of the possible outcomes that I had seen would never even have the chance to come to fruition.
When Blue Beetle told us about the Reach's secondary plan I leapt into action knowing full well that I had to start moving or they never would let me help. I was paired with one of the Zatanna and Dr. Fate, both of whom knew that something was brewing in the air due to their mystic powers. I helped them disable the Doomsday device that we were assigned and then I heard the Flash speak over the comms. It was then that I muttered my spell. "Ekat em morf ereh ot ereht, eht dne fo lla dlouhs I liaf. A srevol lerrauq ereht lliw ton eb, sa I lliw ti, os ti lliw eb!" (A/N: Yeah I know I should translate, but it is fairly straight forward *sticks out tongue.) I could feel the shock of the team as I disappeared from where the other two magicians were. I landed there just as Luthor told Bart and Barry to start running opposite the flow of energy that the chrysalis was giving off. I was frozen to the spot nothing I could do until Wally got here which was not even a moment later. Not even then did the pressure on me from some outside force abate. It was as though the same thing that kept me from voicing the images I see was pressing down on me in this exact moment. So as the rest of my foster family fought to save the Earth I fought a force that I couldn't even see…not that they would acknowledge it if they did, these are men of science that we're talking about here.
Once of the rest of the team had arrived in the Bio-ship they were all surprised to see me standing not far from the running speedsters. I dimly heard the sound of Blue's voice saying "What do you mean cease…" when the pressure suddenly dispersed and my body leapt forward taking with it my one worded spell, "STOP!" I know that Dick had leapt forward to try and stop me when he saw that I was running toward the vortex of energy, but unbeknownst to myself I had done something more than I had intended with my thoughtless command.
Arete and Jack stared at the scene before them witnessing the transformation that they knew would happen. Seeress's hair changed from brown to its natural copper color then that too faded to white as all the mystic energy that she had in her body was used to power that one command she had unwittingly given. Arete watched in awe as the latent powers that the young woman held awakened in a torrent of power. As Ally ran tiny lavender and grey lily's sprung up in the snow, but other than the running girl and the two people sent to this time by NightLily everything had stopped, not a sound was made, but despite this the spell could only hold so long and her magic was running low from the earlier battle. Just when she was about to grab hold of Wally he disappeared without a trace.
While the rest of the team dwelt with Artemis and the sudden disappearance of Wally, Arete and Jack gathered the now snow white haired Seeress and placed her within the Bio ship. Jack turned to Arete and gave her a calculating look before asking, "How much time did Lily say it would be before her powers completely rejuvenate and she wakes up?"
Arete didn't even look up from where she had been staring at Ally when she answered, "She said to give it a day and then call her. After that we aren't on our own anymore. We were just the witnesses to the awakening, now we just need to make sure that we can get the portals opened when she wakes." She motioned to Ally. Apparently there was something brewing, what did NightLily have planned and what was to come in the near future for our heroes.
In another time and another place a robotic figure came upon a prone figure in the middle of a desolate town in Missouri. "So it had begun," it said with a computerized male voice. "Let us just see if those meddlesome children can take you back a second time."
The unconscious being did not respond, burns running up and down his body where it could be seen through the tears in the fabric of the clothes that he was wearing. The robot pulled an inhibitor collar from the many inside where its stomach should have been and placed it around the unaware hero's neck. "We shall see if the Light doesn't succeed with me as their leader now."
High in the sky a shiver went down the spine of a woman in black kelvar-leather costume a hood pulled over her hair strands of the copper tresses peeking out from beneath. She looked down at her left hand where her ring lay just hidden underneath her fingerless gauntlets. She touched her ear and said into it, "Flash, G.A., Nightwing, you guys might want to gather up the rest of the old team and the kids…we're going on a trip." She didn't wait for an answer before she swept away from the control panel; her mind was already on other matters. Some things were more important than making sure that the Mad Hatter had enough tea in Arkam.
Moon-chan: Okay, so what did you think? Who do think the mysterious figures are? Do any of you want me to update sooner…well if you do please drop a review or PM me, either or and I will love to hear any and all comments. All I ask it that you all be polite about it, no crude language. Also I am aware that my grammar and my spelling stink in areas so please bare with me, I am dyslexic, thank you. Until next time….Caio!
