This is the longest chapter I've written ever!
It's over 7k words!
It started as 3k. I noticed one thing that didn't make sense, had to rewrite over half the chapter (about 2k words of it) and managed to just keep going and going, to make the new bit fit, and the reactions like I imagined them.
The moment you've all been waiting for. The letters are discovered.
Thanks to my Beta - Michy Drarry Shipper for being an awesome Beta, and also Hato-ryou-chan who has been a great help for this story too. (go read their stories, you won't be disappointed, trust me!)
Thanks to everyone reading this story, and to those that are leaving reviews. I love reading the reviews.
Christmas Eve came quickly, and on that morning, Sirius came bounding into the shop, with a Christmas hat on his head. His gaze fell on the handsome man behind the counter, who was serving a couple of early morning customers.
"Remus," he called, happily, and the sandy haired man looked over at him with a grin, before turning back to the customers. Sirius watched him put their books into a carrier bag, and pass them their change and receipt. Remus smiled at the couple, wishing them a Merry Christmas, and Sirius started walking towards the counter, hoping to get a kiss in before any more customers needed serving. Christmas eve was bound to be busy, with a lot of people forgetting to get presents until last minute.
He noticed a couple of girls hovering nearby, pretending to look at one of the bookcases, but they were whispering, and giggling.
He watched them for a moment, and noticed one seemed to be trying to catch Remus' eye. She was smiling in his direction, and Sirius could tell by her posture that she was sticking her chest out slightly. He laughed to himself, knowing full well that was doing nothing for Remus at all.
Sirius watched Remus' eyes trail around the store, as the customer he was serving left. His eyes fell on the girls, and moved to the brunette, who was watching him, as she gave him the biggest smile, and attempted to look seductive. Remus' gaze shifted away quickly.
As Sirius walked past, he heard the girl talking to her friend. "Okay, I'm going to do it, I'm going to talk to him."
Sirius let out a snort. Remus was taken. How dare she?
He reached the counter and carefully looked over his man. His. Not theirs. He knew it was quite possessive of him, but he wanted the girls to go away.
He looked back at the girls, and noticed the small blonde one was nudging her friend and whispering, and looking pretty desperate, in his opinion. A quick check of Remus revealed that he was trying not to glare at her. Was Remus feeling as possessive as him? He quite liked the thought of that. He noticed the girls starting to edge towards the counter.
He grinned as he remembered back to Remus' reaction on his first day, the look on his face when he quoted Shakespeare to Lily. He waited until Remus met his gaze, before dropping to the floor onto one knee. He took Remus' hand in his own, and grinned at the blush on Remus' face as he realised what was going on.
"I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone," he said, dramatically.
Remus' eyes widened. "Did you actually read The Fellowship of the Ring?" He sounded impressed.
Sirius nodded, proud of himself.
"You know you're in love when you don't want to fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams," Remus responded, immediately thinking of a Dr. Seuss quote that he had always liked, and Sirius stood up.
"My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, both are infinite," he murmured, moving closer to Remus.
"I think you win," Remus whispered, his mind going blank as he focused on the words Sirius had just said to him.
"I like yours best," Sirius informed him, as he pulled some mistletoe from his pocket.
The girls were watching them, looking a bit uncertain, but they gave the boys their best flirty looks as they saw the mistletoe, and Sirius turned to wink at them.
Sirius raised it above Remus' head, and brought his other hand to Remus' face, gently stroking a hand up his jaw, and into his hair, before his lips gently pressed against Remus'. As quickly as he had started, the kiss was over, and Sirius put the mistletoe back in his pocket. "I missed you," he whispered.
"Missed you too," Remus replied, dazed, a massive smile on his face. He had seen the wink that Sirius had shot the girls who had been watching him, before kissing him. He didn't mind Sirius kissing him, because he didn't like the one watching Sirius either. Sirius was his. "You saw me a few minutes ago before you went out to get yourself a Christmas hat."
"The mistletoe too," Sirius added. "Plus I got something for you."
Remus nodded. "Christmas hat, mistletoe, and whatever you got for me" he corrected himself, smiling.
"I know, but any time away from you..." Sirius said, giving in to the temptation of pressing his lips to Remus' again.
"Shops closing half day," Sirius continued. "I can't wait to start my Christmas with you."
"You know, this is the first time I've been excited for Christmas in years," Remus admitted.
"Same here. Christmas was always more for Lily," Sirius replied, pulling something out of a carrier bag, and shoving it onto Remus' head.
"To get you into the Christmas spirit," Sirius said, and Remus reached up to find a pair of antlers on his head. He let out a chuckle. "Thank you, Sirius," he said, kissing the dark haired man again. He found he couldn't get enough of Sirius' lips on his own.
Once they pulled away, Sirius turned to the kids' area. "All the kids will arrive soon, I'm going to get ready to read to them." He brushed his lips against Remus' again, before heading to the staff room, and starting to bring out the stack of cushions for the kids to sit on.
Remus served the girls, who had picked some books and returned to the till, and were now looking extremely disappointed. He asked if they wanted the books wrapped, an idea he came up with that Sirius had been impressed with, but they shook their heads and left quickly. Possibly out of embarrassment, Remus decided.
Soon the kids and parents started turning up for the 10am book reading.
"You know, I have to admit. This is my favourite part of the job," Sirius confessed. "Well, apart from being able to kiss you whenever I like."
"I think it's mine too," Remus agreed. "The kissing too of course, well, that's a new favourite, but before, it was storytime."
"Oh, right. Sorry, did you want to read the book, I never thought to ask you, I –"
"No, No, I mean, well, it's my favourite because I like to listen to you reading them," Remus said, blushing.
"So you make a habit of listening to me?" Sirius asked, his eyebrow raising.
Remus nodded. "When the shop isn't busy, of course," he said quickly.
"Why?" Sirius asked, a smile curving his lips.
"I like your voice," Remus replied, the blush on his face deepening.
"I have to disagree, I think your voice is much more pleasing to hear," Sirius murmured into his ear. "I especially love it when I hear you say my name, and one day, trust me, you'll be doing more than just saying it."
Remus clutched the counter, as he envisioned the scene in his head. "I think I'll have you screaming my name first," he countered, confidently, and Sirius laughed, he hadn't expected his innocent Remus to come out with a line like that, and he liked it.
"We'll see about that," he replied, his lustful eyes sweeping over Remus, before someone came to the counter, and Remus turned away to serve them.
Remus watched some of the mothers arrive in too-tight clothes and too much make up, and flirt with Sirius, who just smiled politely, and picked up the book. He took a seat and turned to the first page.
"Is everyone ready?" He asked, looking around, and there were a few answers, and a lot of nodding children.
Remus had no customers and moved closer to the children's corner, so he could listen to Sirius.
"Every Who Down in Whoville Liked Christmas a lot... But the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, Did NOT! The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason."
Remus grinned as he listened to Sirius' enthusiastic tones, as he told the story to the children.
Sirius hadn't planned to read that story. Remus knew that Sirius had been going to read The Little Match Girl, as they had discussed it the day before, at the end of the shift with Lily, and Remus had to wonder if Sirius' change of mind had come from Remus' Dr. Seuss quote.
He kept an eye on the counter, and served a couple of customers in between listening, and finally the book came to an end, and the kids started clapping, the parents joining in, and Remus did too. Sirius met his eyes and gave him a wink, before Remus headed back to the counter as the children came rushing up with a copy of the book – parents following. A few left without making a purchase, but Sirius always had quite a good sale on those days.
"I'm getting breakfast, what can I bring you back?" Sirius asked, and Remus shrugged. "Whatever you're having," he answered, and continued working the till, as Sirius disappeared out of the door.
Half an hour later, Sirius came back, carrying a few bags. The customers were all gone, apart from a couple still at the till. He stopped by the door and picked up a couple of envelopes on the floor.
Remus looked over as Sirius walked past him, quickly running the last book through the till, and pulling out a black carrier bag, in which he placed the books. He quickly wished the customer a Merry Christmas, just as Sirius came out of the staff room, having deposited the bags.
Sirius put a box of croissants on the counter, followed by a hot chocolate for Remus, and a coffee for himself from the café. Remus picked it up and took a deep breath, enjoying the smell of chocolate.
"It's times like this I find myself wondering if you like me or chocolate the most," Sirius said, watching him with a smile.
"I don't think I can decide. Maybe we should combine you both?" Remus said, with a chuckle, and Sirius' eyebrows shot up.
"My my, Mr Lupin, you're in a right dirty mood this morning, aren't you? Are you planning on having your wicked way with me when we reach your parents' house?"
Remus smirked. "It's a good thing I bought us all selection boxes, isn't it?" he asked, trying to sound seductive like Sirius did, as he put down his drink. His gaze fell on a couple of envelopes on the counter.
"Oh right," Sirius said, following his uncertain gaze. "I think someone sent us Christmas cards or something, I found these on the mat."
He grabbed the one that had S. Black written across the front, as Remus looked down at the envelope still on the counter, and his breath hitched as he recognised the familiar handwriting.
He watched numbly as Sirius opened his envelope, a smile on his face.
In his head, he was screaming to himself to stop Sirius from opening it, to grab it off him, to distract him somehow, but he found that he couldn't move, and wasn't able to make a sound. He was frozen as he watched Sirius opened the familiar paper, and Remus' eyes grew wide. He could only imagine what the letter said, and slowly Sirius' smile dropped and a frown etched across his face, before everything was replaced by anger.
He had never seen Sirius angry before, and he watched Sirius struggle to keep his temper for a moment, as his eyes scanned over the letter again, and again.
Sirius stared at the letter for a long time, before his eyes flickered down to the envelope on the desk with Remus' name on it. He slowly folded the letter, and looked around the store. The place was empty, so Sirius shut the door and locked it, turning the sign to say closed.
"I'm going to call James," Sirius whispered, more to himself, and Remus shook his head.
"No, you can't," Remus said, fearful that Sirius would tell his brother.
"I'm not asking for your permission, Remus," Sirius snapped, taking his phone out and calling James.
"Sirius, hang up the phone," Remus demanded, but Sirius turned away.
"James, yeah it's urgent. Come to the shop. Just... please, quickly, just get a cab or something."
"Sirius, please. Don't do this," Remus pleaded, whispering so James wouldn't hear him. "Hang up, please," he begged.
"Yeah, I'd say it's an emergency, Just get here now. Get a cab, run, if you have a bike, ride it. Just get here," Sirius said, ignoring Remus.
"No, it's not Lily, she's fine. She's upstairs… Yeah, it's Remus. He's in trouble, just be quick."
He hung the phone up, and put it back into his pocket.
Sirius gave it a minute before he turned back around, wanting desperately to take Remus in his arms. He knew that by telling James he would be angering Remus, but the note was clear. Someone had hurt Remus in the past, and was going to hurt him again, and Sirius was not about to let that happen. By sending him a letter, they had ensured that Sirius knew, and James would know soon enough. This nutter, whoever he was, would never get anywhere close to Remus, and if he ever tried, Sirius would kill him.
He looked at Remus, and could see the anger on his face, but behind that he could see so much more. The anger was just masking his fear, and Sirius knew all about fear, and Sirius knew that if he hadn't told James to come, and ignored the letter in his hand, this guy, whoever he was, wouldn't stop until he hurt Remus, or had him back.
To Sirius, neither of these were an option. Remus was his. There was no way he was giving Remus up.
Not a word was uttered for the whole fifteen minutes it took James to reach the shop. Sirius never left the counter, worried that Remus would destroy the letter that was still sitting on the countertop, unopened.
Finally, there was a knock on the door, and both men turned quickly, both breathing a sigh of relief as they spotted a man with messy black hair and glasses.
Sirius opened the door, and James walked through. "Hey, what's so urgent?" James asked, looking between them, as Sirius quickly locked the door after him.
Sirius looked at Remus for a moment, who glared back.
"Remus, open your letter," Sirius said.
Remus shook his head. "No," he snapped. "James doesn't need to be here. I can handle this."
Sirius sighed. He could deal with Remus being angry at him, as long as Remus was safe.
"Remus, you mean too much to me for me to pretend this isn't happening," he said softly, before turning to James.
"Handle what, Remus?" James asked, looking between the pair. "Sirius, did you do something to upset my brother? What happened?"
Sirius looked at Remus, hoping Remus would explain, but they were met with silence.
"You're not breaking up, are you?" James whispered, looking worried.
"Never," Sirius said, staring into Remus' eyes.
There was still silence.
Sirius was the one to break it. If Remus wasn't going to say anything, Sirius would.
"Yes, I upset him," Sirius confirmed. "He didn't want me to call you and I did. I know this probably is going to fuck everything up, but your brother's safety is the most important thing to me, so I need to tell you about this letter that came through the door just before I called."
"His... safety?" James asked, looking at his brother, who wouldn't meet his eyes.
"I get it, we all have secrets... well, you might not have any, James, but people have secrets. Bad relationships, bad experiences, fucked up histories that they don't share, but when it threatens someone's life, that's when it can't be a secret any longer. Remus clearly doesn't get that, we're both in danger as long as this stays a secret."
"And how would telling you keep you safe?" Remus replied angrily.
"Because now I know that some nutter could walk into the shop and fucking try and stab one of us," Sirius snapped. "How can I keep you safe if I don't know that someone wants to hurt us?"
"I can keep myself safe," Remus growled.
Sirius ignored him, and turned back to James. He opened the letter up and began to read it.
'I've watched you both and it makes me sick, seeing my Remus in the arms of someone else.
I told him that I'd be coming back for him, and here I am, yet I've had to watch him share smiles with you from his first day at your shop, seeing him kiss you, holding hands and it makes me angry.
No, it makes me furious.
Remus is mine, and no matter what, he'll always end up back with me. He knows we are made for each other. He will never be yours.
I would rather see him dead than with someone else. Or maybe it's your death that will reunite us.
The world can see the marks I gave him, last time he looked at someone else. There will never be anyone else for him now, only me.
I don't like people touching what is mine, as Remus has already found out, and he has to remember every time he looks in the mirror. I warned him to stay away from you, he has had so many warnings, and this is the last. You stay away from him. He belongs to me.
Touch him again, and you will regret it. This is your only warning.'
He folded the letter, and James ripped it from his hands, reading it for himself, before turning an appalled gaze on his brother.
"What in the fuck is this? Who sent this – is this about your face? You told me you caught someone breaking into your place. You fucking lied to me!" James roared at his brother.
"What was I supposed to do?" Remus began. "I –"
"You were supposed to tell your family the truth," James interrupted.
"Tell you the truth? What could I really say? The guy I was seeing turned out to be a fucking psychotic lunatic, who clearly didn't take our breakup very well, turned up and attacked me?" Remus yelled.
James nodded his head. "Yes!" he shouted. "That's exactly what you should have said. 'My ex stabbed' me would have worked too, or 'I have a fucking stalker', that works well also. You know what else would have worked? Saying that –"
"I was scared and I fucked up, alright?!" Remus shouted back, cutting off James' rant. "He said he'd hurt you if I told anyone."
James let out a frustrated noise. "No, don't even try tell me that you were keeping this a secret to protect me, because he's back now, even though you kept it a fucking secret, he's still come back. The letters say this isn't your first warning, so you could have told us the second they started."
Remus had his eyes closed, and his breathing was erratic. "I was trying to work out what to do," he replied, trying to calm down.
"Well, you weren't doing a very good job of it, were you?" James snapped back, the concern clear in his voice. "He's threatening both you and Sirius."
Remus shook his head. "I didn't mean for you to find out, I thought he'd just stop. I'm sorry for not telling you, I'm sorry that you're both involved in this."
"Come on, Remus, you're my brother, and I want you to be safe, and Sirius, well, he's my best mate. I can't let anything happen to either of you, and by not saying anything, you're in danger," James said, trying to push the anger aside, and make Remus understand.
"I'm sorry," Remus said again, looking between them.
Sirius moved closer to him, and wrapped Remus in his arms. "Don't apologise, Remus, I'm just so worried about you, I –"
"You shouldn't have told James," Remus muttered, as he pulled out of Sirius' arms.
Sirius took a step backwards. His eyes darted to James, who looked at him sympathetically for a second, before he glared at his brother again.
Sirius' eyes hardened. He couldn't get upset over Remus' behaviour. They were all angry, but he needed to focus on the problem, and that problem was this man who was trying to take his Remus away from him.
"Remus, someone has just sent me a threatening letter. It's not just about you and whether you want James to know. You might not be worried about yourself, but I have every right to be, since I'm now involved," he gestured to the letters. "We're dating, and he doesn't like that, he's most likely been watching you a while. You aren't safe, and me and James have every right to know about this, and help you, whether you like it or not."
Remus stayed silent, his head in his hands.
"I'm calling Dad," James decided, and Remus' eyes shot open.
"No," he shouted. "Don't get Mum and Dad involved in this."
There was a long silence, whilst everyone was trying to work out what to do.
"I have to, Remus," James finally said. "You need to show us that letter, and all the rest. How many are there?"
Remus hesitated for a long time, keeping his gaze on the letter on the counter.
"Sirius, could you get him a glass of water from the staffroom, please?" James asked softly, and Sirius nodded, leaving quickly.
"You are fucking lucky Sirius is still here, and still wants to be with you after this shit, Remus. I'm not blaming you for this guy doing this, but you clearly don't understand how important you are to him, so the fact that he's trying to help you, that he's sticking by you proves something. So don't start acting like a prick, pushing him away. He did the right thing by calling me, and if it had been the other way around, you would be telling Lily and doing the exact same thing he's doing. So you're going to stop treating him like he's fucked up, because he hasn't. You have to remember that the threat is on your life and Sirius' life. This wanker has just threatened to kill your boyfriend, and the only thing Sirius seems really worried about, is protecting you. Not himself, just you. Don't you want to keep him safe too?"
Remus nodded.
"I'm not saying this is your fault, far from it. You shouldn't be dealing with this at all. I'm just saying that right now, anyone else would piss off after a death threat, and Sirius hasn't. He is still here, and you're going to ruin this amazing relationship you have with him. Don't ruin it, don't push him away. We both want to protect you, Remus. We want to keep you safe, like you'd want to keep me or Sirius safe. You're being targeted by this weirdo now, you're a victim, whether you like to admit it or not. You don't deserve this. We need to know everything now, his name, where he lives... everything, because we need to protect you... and that means we need to go tell Dad," James said, hoping that Remus was finally listening.
There was silence until Sirius returned. He handed the glass to Remus.
"Thank you," he muttered, drinking the water.
"Now, how many letters are there?" James repeated.
He didn't want to tell them, didn't want to admit that he wasn't capable of handling the situation. He was scared that if Sirius knew the truth, Sirius would run. He didn't understand why Sirius was still standing with him now, it would be enough to drive any man away.
But Sirius wasn't just any man. He was different. He was special.
Finally his gaze shifted upwards to the two men in the shop with him. If Sirius ran, at least he wouldn't get hurt. His ex was threatening the man he was in love with. What if he followed through with the threats? What if he attacked Sirius? Remus couldn't bear if Sirius got hurt.
No. Remus knew that Sirius would not get hurt because of him. He wouldn't allow it. It was one thing threatening him, it was another thing entirely, sending a letter to Sirius.
James was right.
"I get them often, every couple of days, about four letters a week. Sometimes five," Remus admitted.
"How long has he been sending them?" James demanded. "Sirius' letter shows that he was watching you from your first day here, but how long has he been sending the letters. Did they start before here, or was it the attraction between you and Sirius that made him worse?"
"I've been getting them since the day after I started working here. The first letter referred to me and Sirius in the pub after work on that first day, and the letter arrived the next morning. I've been watching out for him, but I never see him. Once he left one on the counter, and I don't know how he managed that. I shouldn't have even come back to work here after the first one, it's not safe. I had a feeling for a while before that someone was watching me, I thought I was being paranoid."
"Nowhere is safe at the moment. Is it only here you've received the letters?"
"Yes."
"At least when you are here, I can see if anyone bothers you, than –" Sirius began.
"I have to be able to look after myself," Remus said, his anger rising again.
"Well, you clearly can't, judging by the fact that he attacked you in your flat, scared you into silence, and has now been stalking you for weeks, not to mention he's threatened to either kill you or Sirius!" James shouted, grabbing Remus by the shoulders and pulling him around so they were face to face.
"I remember you calling me, and when I got there, there was blood everywhere. You fucking hate the scars he left. He stabbed you, Remus, he could have killed you!" James continued shouting, shaking Remus slightly. "You need to understand how serious this is. It's not something you can do alone. Next time he could kill you. He could have walked in here today with a knife and attacked you. He could have attacked Sirius, and Sirius wouldn't have even known what was happening to give him time to defend himself. Stop trying to act all tough and brave, you have us now, we're going to help you Remus. We won't let him get you, I promise, I'll fucking kill him before he can get near you -"
Sirius put his hand on James' shoulder, making him jump. James let go of Remus, and tried to regain the control that he usually found so easy to find. James wasn't an angry person, usually things just slid by him, he was quite laid back, but when it came to his family, or the pair that he had grown close to, his best friend and his girl... well, that brought out a whole other side to James Potter.
"James," Sirius said. "Screaming at him isn't going to help."
James nodded in agreement.
"I know, don't think I've forgotten what happened to me. I've fucked this up. It's not safe for any of you to be around me, what if he hurts one of you, or Lily? I should just leave and –"
Sirius grabbed Remus, pulling him close. "Fuck Remus, you're not listening to anything we're saying," he said softly. "You might have messed up slightly by not telling us, but this isn't your fault. You're the victim here! This shouldn't be happening to you, you don't deserve to have this going on. We want you to be safe Remus, and we can't keep you safe unless you're straight with us. You shouldn't be dealing with this alone, love. You are not going anywhere. I won't allow him to hurt you, or take you away from me. He can't have you, Remus, you're mine – aren't you?" he asked, possessively.
Remus nodded. "You... you still want to be with me?" He whispered.
"More than anything," Sirius said softly. "Why would you think that would change?"
"I just thought, because I... you aren't safe with me, I wouldn't hold it against you if you decided to leave me, or even if you wanted to take a break from this until it's sorted out."
"Do you want me to leave you? Do you want to take a break?" Sirius asked.
Remus shook his head.
"Good, because neither of those were options. What kind of boyfriend would I be if I left you alone when you needed me the most? I'm afraid you're stuck with me."
Remus smiled slightly.
James gave them a moment, and Sirius' lips brushed Remus' carefully, before he pulled his face away, keeping the other man in his arms.
"Remus, I'm sorry I shouted, I just... You're my brother, I want you to be safe, and happy. Fuck. I'm scared for you, alright. You've been doing this alone for weeks now, I'm your brother, I should have noticed that something was up. I just assumed that you being extra quiet and stuff had something to do with you and Sirius, and the fact that neither of you had the guts to make the first move. I never imagined there was anything else. You know that this isn't your fault, and that no one should have to deal with this alone, we're going to help you, Remus. Me, Sirius and Lily. We're going to speak to Mum and Dad and get their help too, okay?"
James knew that he was repeating himself, but he had the suspicion that Remus wasn't really hearing what he was saying the first couple of times. Remus seemed to relax slightly on the confirmation from Sirius that he was going to stay with him, and James hoped that his words would go through better now that Remus was slightly more focused.
Remus nodded, before James hugged him, and Sirius, as Sirius still had his arms around Remus.
Relieved that they were all going to be okay, James ordered Remus to open his envelope.
Remus' hands shook as he picked the envelope up, and slowly ripped the side. He tipped the letter out onto the table, and a photo.
He didn't want to reach and turn the photo over, and he just stared at the back of it, and the letter.
James reached out for the letter, opening it, and bringing it to his face to read, after he realised that Remus wouldn't be able to do it himself.
'Remus,
If you don't end it with him, I'll ruin him too.
He'll never forgive you for what I plan to do to him.'
He read the words out loud, and saw the anger course through Remus.
"Like hell he'll ever lay a finger on Sirius," Remus growled.
"You know when you told us that you kept it a secret because he said he'd hurt James if you told anyone," Sirius began, and Remus nodded.
"Well, I think if that was me, and someone said that about Lily, I'd have done the same thing," Sirius admitted. "I'd have kept it a secret too. I'm sorry Remus, I'm sorry I lost my temper."
Remus moved closer to Sirius, leaning his head against him, as he watched Sirius reach out and flip the photograph over.
They saw it had been taken the day that they had held hands whilst walking with James in the street, just a few days before.
They all stared at the photo. The three of them looking down at what would have been a happy joyful photo, in any other situation, as it showed the three of them laughing together. But due to the nature of the sender, it was just threatening. Remus realised that there was more to the threat than Sirius. The picture could have just so easily been of him and Sirius, but it had James in too. James wasn't safe either.
"I remember... When I said someone was watching you, you tensed up, but I thought you just didn't like the thought of someone watching you snog Sirius, I didn't even consider that it could be anything else," James said. "It was him outside the shop, wasn't it?"
Remus nodded. "I suspect it was," he growled. His tone wasn't aimed at James, and James knew that. He could see the threat just as clearly as Remus did. His concern spread to Lily. This crazed stalker wanted to hurt Remus and Sirius, and Lily was the most important person in Sirius' life, and James was Remus' brother. Of course they were all in danger. He felt an overwhelming urge to go and check on Lily.
"Let's go upstairs," James requested, a pleading look on his face, which Sirius quickly worked out. He nodded, and checked all the locks, making sure the shop was secure, before James scooped up the letter and photo, and led the way to the apartment.
...oOo...
Lily looked up from the television as they walked in.
"What's happened? I heard a lot of shouting, but when I came down, James was there, I didn't know whether to come in or not..."
"Someone's been bothering Remus, and we're going to do something about it," Sirius said.
Lily nodded. "So, what do we do?"
"We need to keep you and Remus safe," Sirius said, firmly.
"What about you and James?"
"You've seen what I can do, Lilypad, don't you worry about me. James will be fine too."
"Remus can defend himself too, and I can help watch out for him. I'm sure you're worrying too much though –"
"No, Remus isn't strong enough –"
"I'm not weak, Sirius," Remus growled. That was the last thing he wanted Sirius to see him as.
"When it comes to this guy, you are, Remus. We all have people that can reduce us to a weak state. This guy who cut your face up, he's yours."
Lily looked at Remus in shock. "The guy who cut up your face?" She whispered. "Sirius is right, Remus."
"So, does the great almighty Sirius Black have someone who is his weakness?" Remus snapped, ignoring Lily.
Sirius nodded. "Yes, my biggest weakness is you," he said, simply, stepping closer to Remus.
"I'm your weakness?" Remus faltered.
"Yes, because it would destroy me if anything happened to you – that makes you my weakness, Remus."
There was a pause, as love swelled in his chest, pushing away some of the anger.
"I guess that makes you my weakness too," Remus whispered.
"Then we have to call the police. Please," Sirius begged.
"We need to go see my dad," James insisted.
Sirius nodded. "Okay, we'll see him first. So, let's do this. I suggest you call him so he's aware we're on our way right now. We're showing him the letters too. Also, I think we should leave the shop closed for a while, maybe taking a trip away after Christmas? Just stay away until this guy is found and arrested."
"We should re-open the shop, you'll lose money –" Remus began.
"Dammit, Remus, do you really think that the shop is more important to me than you are?" Sirius growled, cutting him off. "I'm leaving the shop closed. I say we get out of here now, and get this sorted."
Remus didn't say anything.
"I'm going to get my bag sorted, would you like to come sit with me, Remus?" Sirius asked, his voice much softer. Without waiting for an answer, he took Remus' hand and led him into the bedroom, closing the door behind him.
He moved over to Remus, and let their lips meet softly. Remus slowly kissed the man he loved. They caressed each other's faces, their tongues gently exploring, and Remus found himself pushing Sirius down onto the bed.
Sirius let out a slight moan as Remus' lips worked their way down his neck.
Remus' hand trailed over Sirius' hip, tugging at the hem of Sirius' t-shirt, asking permission and Remus felt the other man pull away.
"Remus, I want to be with you and it's clear you want to be with me. If you even feel half of what I feel for you, you would fight for this – for us. That nutter wants us apart, and he's not going to leave you alone. I will make sure nothing happens to you, but please don't leave me," Sirius begged.
Remus could see something dark in Sirius' eyes at the last words.
"Please Remus, I can't lose you, you, James and Lily, you're all I have," he added, and Remus could only nod.
This was a side of Sirius he hadn't seen before, he could see the fear in Sirius' eyes. Would losing him really mean that much?
"But what if he comes back?" Remus asked.
"Then I will do everything I can to keep you safe, you mean everything to me," Sirius whispered, looking into Remus' eyes.
"You mean everything to me, too," Remus confessed, and saw the look of relief cross Sirius' face, before Sirius crushed his lips to Remus' again.
There was a knock at the door, and Lily walked in a minute later, as the men moved away from each other.
"So what's the plan?" She asked.
"Let's go to my parents' early, get it over with," Remus suggested. "Can you ask James to call them, and to call a cab?"
She nodded, and hugged Remus. "We'll look after you," she said softly. "Sirius would never allow anything bad to happen to any of us." She let go, and left the room.
Sirius started throwing clothes into a small suitcase that still had tags on it.
"You never used that before?" Remus asked, and Sirius shook his head.
"Nope, bought it so I had something to use over Christmas."
"What about for holidays and stuff?" Remus questioned.
Sirius froze for a moment. "Me and Lily were never really in a position to go on holiday," he said, softly. "Although we went camping a couple of times."
Remus nodded. He wondered how anyone could go without having a holiday.
"When was your last proper holiday?"
"Define proper?"
"More than a weekend camping."
"When I was fifteen," Sirius said, after a long pause.
"Didn't you ever want to go away again?"
"I didn't have anyone to go with, until I met Lily, and then I had more important matters."
Remus wondered what the important matters were, and Sirius glanced up to see the curiosity on his face.
"Now's not the time for me to start sharing though, Remus, but I will," Sirius promised.
Remus watched Sirius open a couple of drawers and throw the contents in. He quickly saw that Sirius didn't own a lot of stuff, and the bedroom was as bare as the living room.
"Well, you said we should go away till he's caught, it would be nice," Remus said, softly, tidying the clothes that Sirius was throwing haphazardly into the case.
"Yeah? I'd like that. The four of us, going away somewhere. It'd be amazing," Sirius said, before closing the suitcase and leading the way from the room.
James called a cab, and Lily and Remus grabbed the bags from the flat, as Sirius double-checked the shop was empty. He made sure the shutters were down too. They wouldn't be back for at least two weeks, maybe longer depending on what was going to happen.
They all met on the curb outside the shop, and Sirius found himself looking around, staring at everyone walking past, suspiciously.
"If you see him, Remus, you tell me," Sirius growled, his gaze shifting around, looking at the various faces, searching for any eyes that lingered on them.
James pulled Lily into his arms, looking around, trying to see if anyone was watching too.
Sirius walked over to Remus and grabbed him by the front of his hoodie, and pulled him into his arms hard, and brushed his fingers through Remus' hair. James smirked and looked in the other direction, as Sirius brought his lips down hard, to meet Remus' in the most intense kiss Remus had ever felt in his life.
When Sirius finally pulled away, giving him a smile that made his legs wobble, Remus glared at him. "He could be watching," Remus hissed.
"I don't give a shit, if I want to kiss my boyfriend," Sirius hesitated, uncertainly, but Remus didn't correct him, "then I am going to. I'm not going to let some bastard ruin what we have, I'm not going to hide this, like I'm ashamed of it. If he has a problem with us, he can meet me head on, and trust me Remus, I'm more dangerous than he is... so he's the one who should be scared, not us."
Remus smiled.
"He means it," Lily said. "He would do anything to keep the people he cares about safe."
"I'm glad you're still here with me," Remus said softly.
"Where else would I be? I'm not going to fuck off when something bad happens. I mean, if it was the other way around, and you found out my past was far from perfect... would you... what would you do?" Sirius asked softly.
Remus looked into his eyes. He could tell that Sirius was basically telling him that his own past wasn't the best, and was possibly looking for confirmation that Remus would be there for him too. He knew without a doubt he would be.
"I'd still be here, I wouldn't let anyone hurt you either," Remus replied, confidently.
Sirius smiled, and kissed him again.
The cab pulled up, and James gave his own address. They had their bags waiting by the door, and he wanted to make sure he got Remus' letters to show his parents.
The cab drove to Remus and James' address, and the boys got out, and grabbed their own bags, putting them into the boot before getting back in and giving their parents address. Soon they were driving through Camden Town.
James felt Lily tense up under his arm, as she looked out of the window, and Sirius took her hand in his.
"Don't worry, Lily, nothing's going to happen," James said.
Lily shook her head. "Me and Sirius used to live around here... back when we... before we opened the shop."
James smiled. "Did you live her for long? It's a shame we never met you before..."
"We lived here for those five years," she said, her eyes moving fast as she watched the building pass. "But we didn't get out much."
"Why not?"
"We just didn't," Lily mumbled. "Plus we didn't live in a very nice part of town."
The cab pulled up outside a house, and they all got out, and James paid the driver. They grabbed the bags and cases from the boot of the cab, lifting them onto the pavement.
Sirius squeezed Lily's hand nervously, before grabbing their cases. Lily grabbed all the gift bags they had brought, and followed him to the door, where he stood with Remus. James followed behind her.
"Are you ready?" James asked softly. His question was directed at all three of them. Remus for what was going to be revealed in the house, and Sirius and Lily for meeting the Potters.
They all nodded, and James reached up and knocked on the door.
Review please - let me know your thoughts :)
Feel free to guess who the letter sender is. I did enjoy your guesses. :D
So, most of you thought it was Sirius (because of his mysterious past) but it was Remus.
Also, I know James was shouting and losing his temper at Remus a lot, but I want to stress that James was concerned about him. He wasn't trying to make Remus feel like it was his fault, he was just trying to stress the seriousness of the situation, and that Remus should have come to him or Sirius, rather than tackling it on his own.
He didn't go about it the right way, but when do siblings ever get it right? They shout and scream to get heard instead of being sensible about it.
Originally, James knew about the guy hurting Remus, but at the last moment, I realised that James would have told his parents, even if Remus didn't want him to, and the guy would have been arrested and gone to prison etc. That's the one thing I changed, that led to this whole thing.
Before anyone asks, the guy sending the letters isn't Greyback! That will be revealed soon. Promise.
