Chapter 8: A Weak Signal?

A/N: Another chapter. I'm trying to get chapters out as much as possible so you guys can enjoy them! Don't worry, I'm not rushing them, they'd be worse than they already are. XD (Joke's on me, some people send hate mail then the joke is on them cause I tell them to read another story.) Not trying to say I'm horrible at writing stories, I love all my readers and thank you for taking for time to be interested in my stories. So once again, thanks guys. ONWARD!

Professor Oobleck streamed in the front of the classroom quickly discussing the "Faunus War". It seemed like he just kept going on...and on...

"...now, have any among you been subjugated or discriminated because of your faunus heritage?" The Professor finished with a question.

It took a couple of seconds until a student a few rows up from the seat were Jaune was sitting, raised his hand. Another student, the one sitting right next to Devan was sitting, raised her hand slowly.

"It's obvious that she'd been discriminated..." Devan thought as he looked at Velvet. This was the first time when Devan wasn't wearing his helmet, and his hood was down. He was asked to remove it because he received many complaints from students because he looked suspicious so it would be easier for him not to get into trouble. Velvet didn't seem as scared to sit next to him either, although she still slightly feared him.

"Dreadful, simply dreadful! Remember students, it is precisely this kind of ignorance that breeds violence." He finished his statement with a sip from his cup.

Devan continued to draw out the motherboard for his ship while Professor Oobleck continued his lecture. "Guardian? Why don't you pay attention to the professor, you might learn a thing or two about the history of this planet." Ghost asked as he popped up on Devan's shoulder.

"Well, I'd still like to get off this planet someday Ghost, and I've been slacking on the motherboard sketch. Why can't you record it and I'll watch it later or something..." Devan said as he realized the professor slid up to in front of him.

"Mr. Treynach, may I ask what you are drawing?" Oobleck asked as he glared at Devan closely.

"Uhh," He started. "The sketch for my Ghost that will allow him to re-create the motherboard for my ship. I'd like to get off this rock sometime soon, you know." He replied casually. The professor leaned a bit closer, observing Devan's Ghost.

"Riiighttt. Still, it would be preferable to learn about this planet's history anyway! Considering you know nothing, it's good to know something!" The professor said, sliding somewhere else in the class. Devan sighed and flipped to the next page in his notebook and labeled it, Notes.

Ooblecks lecture continued, and Devan scribbled notes down.

He heard Oobleck rush up to Jaune because he said "Hey!" after getting hit in the head from a paper football from Cardin.

"Mr. Arc! Finally contributing to class, excellent excellent, what is the answer?" Oobleck asked Jaune.

"Uhh...the answer...the advantage, uhh the faunus...had over that guy's stuff..." Jaune saw Pyrrha trying to give him the answer by forming her hands into, what looked like, binoculars.

"Uhh, binoculars!" Jaune quickly said as the thought he was right...but he wasn't and some students laughed as he realized he was wrong.

"Very funny, Mr. Arc. Cardin, perhaps you would care to share your thoughts on the subject?" Oobleck casually asked.

"Well, I know it is a lot easier to train an animal than a soldier." Cardin said, all calm and cool.

"Actually, It's easier to train a soldier than an animal. You know there are animals that refuse to listen to you no matter what you say?" Devan shot back at Cardin quickly.

"What you got a problem?" Cardin looked over at Devan and asked with a smug on his face.

"No, but I think someone behind me has the answer." Devan pointed up and Pyrrha, who sat behind him, perked up.

"I do, it's night vision. Many Faunus are known to have nearly perfect sight in the dark." She answered.

Blake took over and continued from Pyrrha's answer. "General Lagoon was inexperienced and made the mistake of trying to ambush the faunus in their sleep. His massive army was outmatched and the General was captured. Perhaps if he paid attention in class, he wouldn't have been remembered as such a failure."

"Oooohhh!" Some students were heard saying but Devan said it a bit louder than the rest.

Cardin clenched his fist and stood up glaring at Blake, but Professor Oobleck sighed and said, "Mr. Winchester, please take your seat." Jaune was heard chuckling softly but the Professor slid up to his desk. "You and Mr. Arc can both see me after class for additional readings. Now! Moving on!"

Devan watched as most of the students left the class and sat behind a corner and was waiting to see if anything would unfold between Jaune and Cardin. He wanted to make sure that jerk wasn't going to try to do anything before he returned to his dorm. He watched as Nora, Ren, and Pyrrha walked out of the classroom.

"You go on ahead, I'll wait for Jaune." She said. The other two nodded and walked off.

After a few minutes, Devan crouched, cloaking himself so nobody could see him. He figured someone was going to go by him, so why not hide from them? Jaune walked out of the room with Cardin tailing him, and he pushed Jaune down to the ground. Cardin walked away and Pyrrha who was waiting helped Jaune up. "You know, I really will break his legs." She said slightly grinning.

Jaune looked down a bit and sighed. This caused Pyrrha to gasp softly and proclaim, "I have an idea, here come with me!" She took his arm and pulled him around the corner right past an invisible Devan.

"Hmm, I wonder what her idea is..." Devan thought. He decided to tail them slowly and followed them up to the roof. As soon as they walked through the door, he was able to slip past them and lean against the wall. He watched as they approached the ledge.

Jaune looked over the ledge. "Pyrrha I know I'm going through a hard time right now, but I'm not that depressed. I could always be a farmer or...something."

Pyrrha noticed what he was saying and quickly pushed Jaune away from the ledge as she raised her voice, "No! That's not why I brought you up here. Jaune, I know you're having a difficult time in class, and you're still not the strongest of fighters, so...I wanna help you." She said as she smiled.

It looked like it was offensive to what she said to him, as he replied, "Ah, what?" He said, taken back a bit.

"We can train up here after class where no one can bother us."

"You...think I need help?"

"N-no! No. That's not what I meant."

"But you just said it." Jaune said plainly.

"Jaune, everyone needs a little push from time to time. It doesn't make you any different from the rest of us. You made it to Beacon that speaks volumes of what you are capable of." Pyrrha reassured him that he belonged there.

"You're wrong, I-I don't belong here."

"That's a terrible thing to say of course you do."

"No, I don't!" Jaune raised his voice a bit, causing confusion from Pyrrha. "I wasn't really accepted into Beacon..."

"What do you mean?" Pyrrha questioned.

"I mean I didn't go to combat school, I didn't pass any test, I didn't earn my spot at this academy, I lied! I got my hands on some fake transcripts, and I lied." Jaune finished.

"What? But why?" Pyrrha asked with concern.

"Because, this is what I always wanted to be! My father, my grandfather and his father before him were all warriors, they were all heroes! I wanted to be one too, I was just never good enough."

"Then let me help you-" Pyrrha put a hand on Jaune shoulder and he quickly turned back away from her.

"I don't want help! I don't want to be the damsel in distress, I want to be the hero!"

"Jaune, I-"

"I'm tired of being the lovable idiot stuck in the tree, while his friend fight for their lives. Don't you understand? If I can't do this on my own, than what good am I?"

Pyrrha tried to reach for him but he pulled away.

"Just...leave me alone, okay?" Jaune asked her.

"If that's what you think is best." Pyrrha said sadly and walked back into the roof entrance, and down the stairs.

Devan sighed at Jaune. "Dude...if you were looking for a way to hurt a girl's feelings, that was one." Devan was about to get up but he realized another person pulled himself onto the roof, so he decided to sit back, and watch their conversation.

"...I couldn't help but overhear you two from my dorm room. So, you snuck into beacon huh? I gotta say Jaune, I never expected you to be such a rebel." Cardin folded his arms and grinned, knowing he now has the ability to blackmail poor Jaune.

"Please, Cardin please don't tell anyone." Jaune pleaded.

"Jaune, come on, I'd never rat out a friend like that." Cardin walked over to Jaune.

"Uh, a friend?"

"Of course." Cardin put Jaune in a friendly headlock and continued. "We're friends now Jauney-boy. And the way I see it as long as you're there for me when I need you, we'll be friends for a long time." He dropped Jaune and he breathed heavily. "That being said, I really don't have time to do those readings Dr. Oobleck gave us today. Think you could take care of that, buddy? That's what I thought..." Cardin walked back over to the ledge and slid down to where Jaune could still see him. "Don't worry Jaune, your secret is safe with me." And Cardin hopped down from the ledge.

Jaune sighed. "Man, what did I get myself into..."

"Well, I could tell you a lot of mistakes you made today." Devan revealed himself behind Jaune, which scared him a bit. "Woah, were you here the whole time?!" Devan laughed at the fact he scared Jaune. "Yeah, I was, but don't worry. I won't hold anything against you and tell anyone, unlike that jerk." Devan reassured him.

Jaune sighed yet again, this time in relief. "So, I made mistakes?"

"Yeah, the biggest one was turning down Pyrrha's help. You know, she cares about you dude, enough to train you? Jesus if I were in your shoes, I'd take that opportunity without a doubt in my mind." Devan looked out into the background of Beacon. "Of course, I understand why you didn't take the help."

"You do?" Jaune asked.

"I do. I've been there, but you know what I did? I thought it over, and I let my Fireteam leader help me whenever I needed to be trained. Back before I was as good as I am now, I used to suck dying constantly, always needed to be revived..."

"Wait revived? And you say you died a lot?" Jaune was confused. He never knew someone could die and comeback.

"Look, that's not important...the thing is, you should take her help. Trust me, you won't think you're the hero now. But, at this point in time, I think I'm a hero. And you know what I had to go through to think that?" Devan asked Jaune.

"Training from your leader?" Jaune answered.

"Yes. Because I realized there were things I couldn't learn on my own, and I needed help from another person." Devan backed up a bit. "By the way, in my opinion, I think your school needs a better screening process...just saying." They both laughed, but Jaune was more of a nervous laughter.

"I'm going to go back now." Jaune said and walked over to the door.

"Remember what I said, dude." Devan pointed at Jaune, which caused him to nod before leaving.

"You handled that well, Guardian." Ghost popped out from behind Devan.

"Yeah. I try to help people. Although...I didn't want to reveal myself when that jerk was picking on him...I don't want to reveal my abilities to him yet." Devan said as he continued to look upon Beacon at nighttime. He thought it was nice, and he liked the little things at times.

"Hold on, Guardian...I'm getting something from beyond this planet."

"Something?" Devan doubted Ghost, which he didn't do often, because Ghost wasn't lying when he was "getting something", which normally meant a signal from somewhere.

"Yes...I'm getting a signal from Scythe!" Ghost said and opened up a bit, to strengthen the signal.

"De-n, is that y-u?" A voice that sounded similar to his best friend, whom he considered his brother was heard.

"Jayce? Yes, it's me, do you have my location from Scythe?" He said.

"N-t yet, but I'm try-...to get your location, onc- do, I'm going to b-ng you home-" Ghost closed after a second.

"I lost the signal...but I tried to give Scythe my location, hopefully she'd be able to catch it." Ghost said with a hint of disappointment.

"Well, at least we know Jayce is trying to get us back. I just hope he can get here quickly when he finds us. It'll be even worse if he gets suck here with us."
