Chapter 10

"It sounds clichéd, doesn't it? But yeah…Emily saved my life. I wanted to go back to the apartment, Emily didn't. I left earlier and was mugged on the way home. The guy had a knife…and when he realized I didn't have cash on me he got angry and he started to push the knife closer to my throat. I really thought that was it."

Paige sat there, crossed legged in disbelief. Emily had hid behind her insults and charming smiles, never showing a compassionate glance at anyone. She was only beginning to understand the depth of Spencer and Emily's friendship.

"Emily had left soon after me, wanting to make sure that I got home okay. She saw us in the alley and came up behind the guy. The mugger was surprised to say the least. He knifed Emily just below the ribs right before Emily punched him hard enough to knock him unconscious. I dragged Emily to the nearest hospital. I had never been so scared before. And it wasn't even the mugging that had me shaking; it was the fact that I had Emily bleeding on me." Spencer blinked, shaking her head as if to clear away the memory….sounds straight out of a drama show, doesn't it.

"No."

Spencer mistook Paige's expression for concern. "I'm fine. Emily is fine. She stayed in the hospital for a few days, nothing serious. The wound didn't nick anything major."

"Was that before or after you got Emily a publisher?"

Spencer's smile vanished. "She told you that?"

"Yeah" said Paige

"Emily has talent. It was clear, even to me. But no one wanted to read the work of an unknown. And I owed her my life. I convinced my dad to finance Emily's first book…..she doesn't know that….she thinks I found her an editor and that the editor knew of a publisher."

"You paid to get her first book published?"

"My family has money….we could afford it. But I never told Emily that."

"She never found out?"

Spencer shrugged. "If she did, she never said so."

Emily was sitting at the kitchen table the next morning typing like an insane person. Nothing could disturb her, not the pounding against the walls signaling her neighbor's complaint about the loud music, the rumble of hunger in her stomach, and not even Spencer's early departure for the office an hour ago.

Paige watched her. So this was the picture of Emily Fields hard at work. She came up to the table, circling her like prey. "Why did you make it sound like you were the one in debt to Spencer, when it's obviously not the case?"

Emily eyes looked up but her fingers didn't stop. "She told you." Finishing the last of the paragraph, she snapped the laptop shut. She reached for the cup of cold coffee at her side, and took a sip.

"Yeah, she told me."

Emily leaned back in the chair, tipping the front legs up and off the ground. "Spencer's a proud woman. It wasn't my story to tell. If she wanted to tell you, it was her prerogative, not mine."

Paige absorbed the impact of Emily's statement. "When you said that I was no good for Spencer—"

"Look, I probably shouldn't have—"

Paige cut her off in turn. "No. You say what you mean. If there's one thing I've learned about you is that you're honest to the point of insulting."

She chuckled. "I'm not that honest, believe me."

"Well, whether or not that's true, you meant what you said about me and Spencer."

"Yes, I did."

Paige sat down on an adjacent chair. "When you said it, were you speaking for her?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean…" She bit her thumbnail. "Does she think I'm no good for her?"

Emily swallowed another bitter taste of lukewarm coffee. Getting up, she walked into the kitchen. "I never said that."

"No, you didn't. I'm asking you now."

"Why?"

"Just answer me, damn it!" said Paige angrily

Emily didn't rise to her anger. "Maybe we shouldn't talk about this."

Paige had never known Emily to back out of a conversation before, and the fact that she was doing it now only enraged her further. "Like hell we shouldn't. You've turned my life upside down, do you know that?"

Just as Paige wanted, Emily got angry. Snagging Paige's waist, she pulled her tightly against her body. "What the fuck do you hope to accomplish by telling me that?"

"When I'm around Spencer….all I can think about is the way you stare at me so intensely that it makes me want to run away. The fact that you know what I want to say before I even do scares me….all I can think about is you! You and your cheap one-night stands that parade through the apartment almost every night…Spencer is an amazing she could be my perfect girlfriend if I wanted to cross the line with her like that…..but instead I can't help but want the less than perfect one instead!" said Paige as her chest heaved with an ache that was beyond words.

Emily jaw slackened but her grip on Paige's waist remained steady. "Take that back." Emily's words trembled and it frightened her.

"You got what you wanted, didn't you? You made me realized that I wanted was you. Are you happy now?"

Emily didn't know if she was happy or just happily standing in hell. What was going on? She had pushed her; yes, she had pushed her so far. But what was this? "I…"

Paige rose up on her toes and caught Emily's lips between hers in an angry kiss. She wanted her to pay. Pay for ruining her thoughts. She wanted Emily to understand just what she was giving up. She needed to feel Emily against her again. She wanted to hurt her just as much as Emily hurt her. But she wanted to understand…she wanted to know just why Emily was so intensely private. Just why did she hide behind her hordes of females and her work? Why did she feel like she didn't deserve what Spencer freely pursued? A steady relationship, a girlfriend, and…love.

Emily responded instantly, her body coming to terms with what her brain couldn't comprehend. Her rational side couldn't understand what the hell was happening, but her body knew all too well. She opened her mouth wide and felt Paige bite down on her lower lip; she grimaced, but let her do as she pleased. Paige was venting out her frustration on her, and she had no control over it. Emily didn't want to control her. She wanted her…all of her.

Paige threaded her fingers through Emily's hair, marking her as her own. She had a desperate need to claim Emily just as much as Emily did her. Pressed up against her, she tilted her head back to accommodate the weight of Emily's kiss.

Emily bent forward and cupped Paige's below her bottom, bringing her higher and harder against her body. She pulled Paige up, with her hands below her hips, and lifted her. Paige wrapped her legs around Emily's waist and wound her arms around her neck.

Suddenly, Paige became too heavy for her because the kissing was distracting her too much. Groping for the surface of the counter, she started to set her on the stainless steel, as Paige clenched her legs tighter around Emily's waist. Grinding into Emily she felt the seam of her jeans pressed just right against Emily's warm center.

Emily staggered and felt Paige's back thump against the refrigerator instead. Magnets jolted from their peaceful existence on the face of the fridge and dropped with a clatter. One of the glass ones shattered at their feet.

Paige was too much for her to hold up. Slipping, she bent down and continued her assault as she hovered over Paige on the tiles of the kitchen floor. Fast, cold hands dug at her simple black t-shirt. Paige pulled on Emily's shirt as she scraped her nails against Emily's back. Making Emily eyes screwed shut, as she kissed her harder, thrusting her tongue in time with their hips.

Emily's lips were already feeling chapped, bruised under the pressure of Paige's fuller ones, but she couldn't stop. A choked sound escaped from the back of Paige's throat as Emily blindly felt for the strap of Paige's tank top. Tugging down with more force than necessary, Emily heard the slight ripping of seams. She pushed aside the thin cotton of Paige's bra and rolled the hardened nipple between her thumb and forefinger.

Paige arched up and searched for the buckle of Emily's belt. Using both hands to undo it, she groped for the zipper of Emily's jeans, not taking notice of the fact that Emily's lips moved down to her neck, nipping the curve of her shoulder.

Emily took Paige's breast into her mouth, creating a hot suction while her free hand continued to tease the other one. Paige keened up into Emily's mouth, feeling the scrape of her teeth on the underside of her breast. Paige was distracted and her hands came up to Emily's chest instead of finishing the undoing of her pants. She stroked Emily's chest, watching in delight as she gulped in air. She kissed the tightness of her neck, her muscles straining as she met her mouth once again.

Their chests rubbed together, feeling hot skin on skin contact. Emily hissed and bent down further to take the other breast into her mouth. Tongue and teeth teased Paige while her hand trailed down Paige's body. She pressed the heel of her palm against the seam of Paige's jeans, pressing until Paige cried out.

Paige kissed Emily's neck, sucking the throbbing vein as she rubbed against Emily's hand, seeking for the elusive climax. Emily altered the positioning of her hand slightly, and suddenly Paige was there, grasping for air at the same time she reached out for Emily's body.

Emily came up to oblige her, nuzzling her chest and then the sides of her neck gently as she rode the waves of her orgasm.

When Paige finally came to, her eyes cleared and she felt Emily lay down beside her on the hard tile. Gathered up in her arms, she looked up at her, fearful of her reaction. But Emily's face was blank, save for the brief flicker of concern that danced across her brown eyes. Emily was beginning to regret this and she knew it. "Emily?"

Emily sat them up, but didn't release Paige from her arms. She rubbed Paige's back in a gentle caress and tucked up Paige's fallen tank top strap. "This was wrong."

Paige reached out for her, shaky fingers coming into contact with the warmth of her chest. Emily caught her questing hands between her steady ones, and brought them to her lips. She brushed a single kiss in the center of her palm. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. Please forgive me."

That was so unlike the Emily she'd come to know that it scared her. She watched with dread as Emily got up, knees cracking as she stood. She saw her disappear behind the counter, the sharp click of Emily's bedroom door signaling her departure.

Paige licked her dry lips and rubbed her weary eyes. Standing, she tore off a single sheet of paper towel and bent down as she gently picked up the broken glass of the fallen magnet. Rounding up the rest of the silver magnets, she stood again, feeling the wobbly effects of her climax. Locking her knees, she replaced them to the best of her memory. Each slap of metal on metal resounded in her ears. When she finished, she went to retrieve her purse from the couch, where she had left it last night. Shouldering the bag, she left the apartment without another glance.

Emily listened for the lock of the front door. When she knew for certain that Paige was gone, she opened her own door, watching in brooding silence, staring at nothing.

Well there you have it folks hope you enjoyed the update and let me know what you guys want next…
