Level up
The family was waiting on them - Iruka and Yugao, Lord Hiashi and Hanabi plus Kakashi and a few Anbu. "How'd it go?" Iruka asked the moment Sasuke appeared before him.
Sasuke just grinned and summoned his brother, sister and girlfriend home then turned to Iruka. "Hey Dad, little brother is making us proud, TK too. Both are officially sages and are learning specialized techniques now." He laughed when Iruka pumped his fist.
"She got bigger." Hanabi cooed at the cub in Itachi's arms. "May I?" She held out her arms.
"Hello little sister. Be careful, she's gotten stronger too." Itachi warned with a smile as he handed over Nozomi.
"As always he is impressive and Hinata?" Lord Hiashi asked eagerly.
"My lord let's go inside and hear the details. Welcome back everyone." Yugao smiled at the kids and led them to Naruto and Hinata's house. Kakashi took the bundle from Ayame as they walked.
"Hinata asked me to set up the downstairs bedroom for you." Hanabi said over her shoulder laughing as the cub's whiskers tickled her face and neck. "I'm afraid it's kind of bare, I didn't know what you liked and didn't want to decorate it for you." She looked upset with that.
"I'm sure it will be fine Hanabi. I should be staying with Sasuke but my…guilt won't let me return there." Itachi admitted feeling his heart shrink painfully. "And when we are not training I shall see to building my own home. I have no wish to impose on the newlyweds any longer than I have to." He nodded to himself. Plans for the future were one way to keep the past in the past.
"You're always welcome at our home too Itachi." Ayame informed him. She touched his arm then moved to the sitting area. "Hanabi look what Hinata has sent." She picked up the bundle that Kakashi placed on the table and went through it with her taking a few shoots and seeds for herself.
"I think Naruto will need to start on that greenhouse fairly soon. Hinata's collection of plants is growing fast." Hiashi said with a smile.
"Some of those are Naruto's I bet." Kakashi told him. "He found many plants during his training at Crescent Moon. Kid's always had a green thumb."
"That's right Father. I remember how his apartment had plants, they were there long before he and Hinata began dating. She told me about it. He loves seeing them grow and flower." Hanabi smiled. It was another side of her brother she loved and made him so compatible with them since the Hyuga gardens were somewhat famous in the village.
Hiashi looked puzzled. "How have I missed this detail about Naruto?" He knew the young man appreciated plants but not that he could grow them. "Iruka you knew?"
"Of course, he's helped me with the plants around my house and kept a few of them from dying when I was neglectful." Iruka shrugged. "You too Ayame, right?"
"Oh yes, we grow a few of our own herbs and Naruto told us how to keep them healthy." Ayame confirmed. "Thank you!" She said to Yugao as she brought in the tea.
"Yeah now that you mention it I saw this in Naruto's mind. He needed something to make him feel good about himself and growing plants gave him a great sense of satisfaction. Hinata makes creams and Naruto grows plants – they could make some good money with that." Seiko chimed in then raised her eyebrows when Sasuke groaned and Itachi chuckled.
"My brother is despairing that our siblings have other ways to make money for our futures and to maintain the district. Naruto already has the skating rink, Hinata her creams and teas, Takeshi his art, Ayame her restaurant and lately they have been considering starting an aviary. Neither Sasuke or I have a way to contribute." He said this but he looked thoughtful as if he had an idea.
"Such enterprising children." Hiashi shook his head for all of them were well committed to being ninja but that didn't stop them from dreaming big and planning for more. "Well this is a topic we shall think on and come back to later. Please tell me of Hinata's training." He asked eagerly as he sat forward in his chair.
Itachi leaned back and crossed his legs, one dangling foot caught Nozomi's attention. "Lady Shima has taken Hinata under her wing so to speak." He grinned. "She is teaching Hinata how to hop."
"Hop?!" Came from several different mouths.
Sasuke laughed. "I know it sounds ridiculous but you've all see a toad or frog hop haven't you? The power from their hops let them travel a goodly distance. By strengthening her legs to be able to move at the speed and distance of a toad, Hinata's own power increases tenfold! Imagine her going at the enemy with those lightning-fast whips of hers – she can slay enemies before they even see her coming!" Sasuke's eyes sparkled. His sister was a constant delight. She was a loving woman but oh so deadly.
"Not only that but if she has to retreat she could be out of the way in seconds, rebound and as Sasuke said, tear her enemy apart." Itachi added. "Even her Gentle Fist would be strengthened. I understand it's mostly about maintaining a stance but with her concentration and the force of a leap she could go on the attack just as easily defend. Hinata wouldn't just destroy chakra points but destroy body parts." He blinked as he thought it out. "I think I'll stay on Sister's good side."
Iruka laughed. "Your brothers thought the same after they saw her use those whips for the first time!"
"What's incredible is that they've accomplished so much in so short a time." Seiko mused. "I would have thought becoming sages would take a long time." She frowned for she just wasn't sure what the difference would be. "So a sage, will he still have to test for Jonin?" She looked to Iruka.
Iruka blinked, his mouth dropped open and then he began to laugh. "He's beaten me again! All that training to be stronger and to become a Jonin and that little idiot has surpassed me again!" He slapped a hand to his forehead in amusement.
Sasuke was grinning too. "Technically Naruto is still a Chunin but now he and TK are part of a specialized group of which there are only three in Konoha – sages. I guess their skill level would rank just under or alongside the Hokage." Now Sasuke shook his head. "I'm going to have to fix that but in any case Naruto won't think of it that way. Until he's tested and traditionally won the title of Jonin he won't think of himself as stronger than you Dad." Sasuke began wondering if when he finished his training could he test for Jonin. Itachi had become Anbu and was considered an S-ranked shinobi; he couldn't let himself fall behind.
"Naruto will be super-proud of his new skills but he won't rub it in my face." Iruka consented. "But you Sasuke, he might brag about it to you! Naruto never feels as if he can keep up with you." He winked at the teen. Both knew at one time that was true, Naruto had been a poor student. He'd been slow to learn things but much had changed since their days at the academy.
He let out huge sigh. "I'll let him – for a few minutes I'll let him talk before I show him up!" Sasuke crossed his arms and nodded.
"Little brother first you have to learn a few things. As it stands now, Hinata can kick your butt." Itachi saluted him with his teacup. Everyone laughed as Sasuke lost his superior attitude and scowled at his big brother.
"Speaking of learning, shall we talk about our training schedule? We can probably get in a few hours today if you're up to it Sasuke." Kakashi told him because truth be told he too wanted to increase his skills.
"And I think that is our cue to head home Hanabi." Lord Hiashi said standing. "Sasuke expect us tomorrow evening for dinner. We know Itachi is not allowed out of the district so we'll have our family dinners here." He helped his daughter on with her cloak.
"Family dinner?" Sasuke asked confused as he looked to Iruka and Yugao.
"Hinata wanted me to look after you remember? Plus I have a new brother and I wish to get to know him." She gave Itachi a shy smile. "We don't get much time with you all, so once a week or so we shall get together for dinner. Ko and Ryo will be coming too." Hanabi looked excited.
"Don't worry about the food and cooking, Hanabi and I will take care of it this time." Yugao informed him. "Ayame I thought we could take turns? And Itachi dinner will be here so there shouldn't be any problems for you."
Itachi shook his head then stood and bowed. "Thank you all for the considerations you are making on my part. I will do my best to never disappoint you."
Kakashi got up for more tea. "Itachi's got wonderful manners – so different from you Sasuke. Maybe he'll teach you more than ninjutsu." He smirked as he easily dodged a pillow.
"Okay guys; don't go messing up Hinata's house. We'll go too and let you get to it." Iruka got up to collect their cloaks.
Kakashi settled back down while Sasuke saw them all out. When he came back Seiko was playing with Nozomi. "Staying awhile? Inoichi won't be worried?"
"I contacted my father and told him I was back." Seiko looked up at him. "You guys aren't the only ones who can communicate mind to mind. I'll stay and make dinner for you guys since Ayame wants to get home and take care of the plants Hinata gave her. Even though she's a cook you guys shouldn't depend on her to cook for you." Seiko told him.
"We don't. I know how to cook Seiko." Sasuke glanced at Kakashi and Itachi. "What's up – you're in a mood." He asked bluntly.
She inhaled then nodded also looking at the other men. "May my parents and I come to dinner tomorrow?" Seiko wanted them closer, his family and hers. They'd chosen to live their lives in Konoha and she'd chosen Sasuke as her man, their families needed a good relationship.
Sasuke stiffened a little. Things had gotten better with Seiko and his life wasn't in danger from Inoichi but did he want to have dinner with the man?
"It is a family dinner Sasuke." Itachi reminded him. "I hope to also call Seiko sister someday." He nodded his head for he'd caught Sasuke staring at the woman with hope in his eyes.
"Yeah okay but just your parents right?" Sasuke asked looking at her beautiful face. He'd known her face on another woman first but that one he hadn't really liked and then hated for the actions she'd taken against Hinata and Naruto. Sasuke didn't think he'd be forgiving Ino any time soon.
"Sasuke she's not so bad not anymore at least to me but no I wasn't going to invite my sister." Seiko got up and collected a few cups. "I'll check out the kitchen while you guys talk." As she walked by Sasuke she leaned in to kiss his cheek in thanks.
"One of these days the two of you will stop putting barricades in your way and learn how to be happy. You've got the best examples around you with your brothers and Iruka." Kakashi told him with a tired sigh. "Anyway let's discuss just what we need to work on. I have to improve my Kamui and you Sasuke learned something new in the middle of battle, you probably should work on that. What else can you teach us Itachi? Since I'm not an Uchiha so I won't ever have the same control over the Sharingan as you two but there may be a few things I can do." Kakashi stated thinking of his own history compared to theirs and was somewhat glad his story wasn't as tragic as the Uchihas'.
"Kakashi I think between us we can come up with a satisfactory training regime. After watching Takeshi and Naruto even Hinata train, we must work as hard and improve just as they have. It would be unfair to lay the burden of power on their shoulders alone." Itachi commented.
Sasuke stared at him. "You'll train too?" He wanted that, to train alongside his brother. "What else will you do?" He stood up. Kakashi raised an eyebrow wondering just what the two were talking about.
Itachi nodded his loose hair falling about his face. "Though I would prefer not to and only if the Hokage allows it – I will fight Sasuke. I will train with you and I will stand with you all when the Akatsuki comes." Itachi got to his feet and held out his hand.
Now Sasuke smiled. He shook hands with his brother sealing the deal and then showed him how he and Naruto did it by bumping fists. "Let's do it then!"
"Any word from Jiraiya?" Hiashi asked of Iruka as they left the district. The wind blew his long hair out behind him and he shivered. "Hanabi raise your hood!" He called to the girl who was several paces ahead of them with Yugao talking about the wedding.
"It's been a frigid winter." Iruka said adjusting is scarf. "Not yet. I expect it took them a while to get there and if there is a civil war going on in Ame, it could be difficult finding someone to talk. In any case we've been lucky not to have been attacked by them since Sasuke and the Kazekage killed off another of the Akatsuki. It worries me though." Iruka confided to the lord. "The calm before the storm so to speak and I really wanted to see Takeshi and Ayame married before…whatever comes next." His eyes followed the movements of his fiancée's long hair in the wind. She'd been practical and pulled a woolen cap over her head but her hair hung down her back.
Hiashi hummed his agreement and glanced at Iruka. "And yourself? You and Takeshi could get married at the same time. Think of the party Naruto would throw." He grinned. "You know I never knew being a parent could be such fun. Thank God they forgave us." He whispered with another shiver because everything could have gone so wrong.
"Amen to that! And you know when Tsunade first suggested I act like his father I was horrified. Now I'm proud and hopeful. I'm going to make things as right as I can with Naruto and the boys and I'm looking forward to babies, theirs and ours. Well depending on how many Yugao wants but I honestly can't wait." Iruka's breath showed in the cold air as he chuckled. "Yeah we could do a double wedding but I want Yugao to have her own day. I doubt any of us could top Naruto and Hinata's wedding but we should all get the chance shine in our own way." He became thoughtful as he walked. "I wonder if the old man will make an honest woman out of our Hokage."
"Now that would be a wedding! It could happen. Naruto has pretty much mended fences with Jiraiya. The more time he spends with Jiraiya means time with Lady Tsunade. I can understand Naruto's need to lay the blame on one person since it allowed him to forgive us but I hope in time all his anger will pass. They made a wonderful mother and son." Hiashi noticed Hanabi was almost dragging the bundle of plants. "Let me carry it daughter."
"Thanks Father. Would you like to come back with us? Yugao wants to check on her dress and I could see to lunch." Hanabi smiled up at Iruka.
"I love my boys but I hope we have girls or at least one. Yes I would love to come." He reached out and tapped her nose.
"Whether you have boys or girls, they will be blessed children. I must say even I never knew so many of my clan had other talents – jewelry making, seamstresses, carpentry and they are also shinobi." He spoke proudly. "I've spoken with the carpenters and they are willing to work on Itachi's home and any other project the Naruto clan comes up with." Hiashi had always believed his clan was the best but he didn't know in how many ways they were so damn good.
"Oh yeah, then I should talk with them too. If the kids okay it, I think Yugao and I would like to build a house in the district." Iruka said surprising Hiashi. "But about what you said before, I know you would like to see Tsunade and Naruto as mother and son again but I don't think that's going to happen. He'll get over it but what they had is gone. They'll have a new relationship but not as mother and son. So by moving into the district Naruto knows I'm close by that I can't and won't give up on him. He's always welcome at your estate so the more he feels at home in the district all the better."
Hiashi frowned for he had thought Naruto would accept Tsunade back into his life as his mother but it could be as Iruka stated. Naruto was forgiving to a fault almost but this could be the one thing that was too much to be let go of. "But he accepts you. I don't mean he shouldn't but why rid himself of his adoptive mother but still accept you as his father?" He stopped to look at Iruka.
He could tell this bothered Hiashi so he shared his thoughts on the matter. "I was there, not at the very beginning but when he joined the academy. The Sandaime did ask me to take an interest in Naruto but even before then I kept an eye on Naruto. I tried to keep him out of trouble, help him learn – discipline him!" Iruka rolled his eyes as he remembered all the times he had to punish Naruto. "He grumbled and he fussed but he did everything I asked of him. I think it because I was there; I watched him, talked with him and became a friend as well as a teacher. We were already family long before I learned who he was or before the adoption." Iruka shrugged. "Tsunade just came in really late. Lord Sarutobi would have taken the brunt of Naruto's anger had he lived allowing Naruto to keep his new mother but…" He trailed off then jerked his head. "The girls have gone on ahead, come on."
Hiashi glanced around then nodded. "You have said many things I haven't thought of and again made me realize I don't know my son-in-law as well as I wish to. I shall have to praise Hanabi for her idea of family dinners. It is humbling to have the young teach us." He laughed and picked up pace. "Let's get home where it's warm."
Nodding the two men hurried to the Hyuga estate. Iruka was humbled by Naruto often but he didn't look on it as a bad thing. Besides change was coming and he didn't think it was simply the battle with the Akatsuki. It would be a life change for all of them to be led by his son.
(Jiraiya and Asuma are still in Ame)
"Look at them jump! Naruto's very good but the girl is jumping well too." Fukasaku told his wife as the toad couple watched the human couple.
"Yes she listens well and I think those eyes of hers help her with learning the correct form." Lady Shima nodded her agreement.
"Husband here I come!" Hinata yelled and launched herself at Naruto. The two of them were jumping and hopping. She wasn't able to do the Kawazu Kumite but that didn't mean they couldn't work on their own fighting combinations.
"Come wife!" Naruto yelled as his wife appeared before him at chest level. He caught one foot and thrust her higher into the air. Hinata somersaulted while simultaneously throwing out shuriken on set targets. As Hinata went up, Naruto spun around, created two clones. "Rasengan!" He'd drawn a goofy mask on the ground to represent that masked guy in the Akatsuki. It was now a crater. "If only it'd be that easy." Naruto muttered as he fell to the ground then turned to see an angel descending. "Got ya!" He said as he easily caught his wife in his arms.
Hinata laughed in excitement. "That was fun!" She looked at her mate then touched his face. "I think I'm finally getting used to this face." It was still her beloved's face but his eyes those lovely blue eyes had changed so dramatically. Yellow and black eyes and the surrounding skin red. He was still her man but this marked him as a sage.
"You? What about me? If I catch my reflection in water I do a double take!" Naruto let his wife down and kissed her. "But it's me. Just check out my ass – isn't it the same one you fell in love with?" He grinned wickedly then turned and shook his butt at her.
Hinata's head fell back as she laughed then smacked the butt that had so captured her attention one day by the river. "Yes it is at that!"
"Enough of that – it's time to train, sex play later!" Groused Lord Fukasaku. He and Lady Shima had been watching them to check their techniques and both had found weaknesses the kids need to be aware of. "Come Naruto."
"With me Hinata." Shima called and the couples split up.
The toads spent the morning with their charges then gave them some time to practice on their own. Naruto went off by himself to try out a jutsu that had previously been forbidden to him while Hinata also found a secluded place to practice a new technique of her own. It was over dinner that toad sage informed Naruto that there was still more he had to learn.
"You've done well Naruto-boy but I should tell ya about the risks of using sage mode."
"What risks?" Hinata asked quickly. She'd gotten Lady Shima to allow her to cook tonight so the food was actually edible but her stomach tightened at this news.
"Now don't worry girl, once Naruto knows these risks he can go all out in sage mode." The toad reassured Hinata. "Actually you already know them," He looked back at Naruto. "First off sage mode only lasts for about five minutes and you have to be still to gather in more nature energy. Meaning you can't be in the midst of a battle and go into sage mode."
"…So if Naruto's in a battle he'll have to back out or hide until he can gather nature energy…" Hinata said frowning.
"Or let someone else protect his back while he's going into sage mode. I think those brothers of his will do that or you, right girl?" Lady Shima smiled at Hinata.
"Right! It's not such a big deal; comrades help each other out all the time. But Naruto, Hinata there is another solution." Lord Fukasaku looked from one to the other. "We'll merge our bodies Naruto!"
Lavender eyes went wide and met blue eyes. Each were imagining a toad-like Naruto. "Oh come on!" Naruto protested. He already had the Nine-Tails within him and now he was supposed to become part toad?!
"What? It just means Pa will be loosely attached to your shoulder!" Shima shook her finger at Naruto who managed to look sheepish but Hinata looked relieved.
"Yep while you can keep battling, I'll be on your shoulder to draw in nature energy. It works really well with Jiraiya-boy and he uses both me and Ma. We can start first thing tomorrow." He held out his hand before Naruto.
Naruto grinned and shrugged at his wife at how weird all this was then slapped his palm against the toad's. But it wasn't as easy as all that.
The next morning Lord Fukasaku sprang from Naruto's shoulder as if a fire was under him. He huddled on the ground for a few moments before warily looking over his should at Naruto. "Well it seems that we can't merge."
"What?! Why not? You said we had to, that it was the only way to stay in sage mode during battle!" Naruto yelled in frustration. They'd been trying all morning and nothing had worked. "Maybe you're doing it wrong!"
"No, no that's not it." The little toad said as he adjusted his cloak. "The sage technique: art of the amphibious has always worked with those who managed to master nature chakra. No boy it is the Nine-Tails. It casts me out each and every time! I've never tried to merge with a body already occupied with another spirit or should I say a Jinchuriki." He waved his hand up and down encompassing Naruto's body.
"KYUUBI?! HE'S STOPPING US?! DAMNED FOXXXXXX!" Naruto screamed at the sky. It took him a half hour to calm down. He spent most of that time cursing and questioning the toad on other alternatives. "Wait, wait, wait." Suddenly he stopped and dropped to the ground and crossed his legs. "I'm going to talk to him. Maybe if I ask nicely enough Kyuubi will let us merge." Naruto groaned for his occupant was so damned stubborn it was likely to be yelling match instead.
"You talk to it?!" Fukasaku was amazed and horrified. He'd gotten an image of the fox each time they'd tried to merge and it had been scary as hell.
"Yeah pretty well lately." Naruto had to laugh at himself. He thought they got along better but Kyuubi probably thought otherwise! "Give me a little time." He closed his eyes settling his body and mind preparing to go to his mindscape.
"Well boy?" Fukasaku was on his thigh staring up at him curiously as if the fox's face would manifest over Naruto's features.
"Go. Away." Naruto lifted the toad off of him and shooed him. "I don't need any distractions. I have to find out why this isn't working and having you here nagging me won't help. Beat it Geezer!" Naruto pointed off into the distance.
"Geezer! Ungrateful boy, hmph!" Lord Fukasaku grumped and leapt off towards home but actually stopped and hid behind a tree too curious to see how Naruto would talk to the Nine-Tails to leave.
Once again Naruto shut out the world around him and entered his mind. He walked out onto the green grass before him towards the massive gates. They were open enough for him to pass through and approach the sleeping giant. Even though he desperately wanted to, Naruto didn't call out for his parents. They were there when he really needed them so he pushed down the desire to see them and walked around to the huge snout to be face to face with the fox.
"You're not sleeping so open your eyes and talk to me!" Naruto demanded with his hands on his hips. "Why won't you let me merge with the toad sage?!"
One huge red eye opened to glare at Naruto. ANNOYING BRAT! LEAVE ME BE! The eye closed again.
Naruto sighed and moved until he was sitting against one forepaw. "I need this strength Kyuubi. As a sage I don't rely on your power so you should be happy about that. But think about it, if I used your power and my sage power we could stop these guys. Haven't we seen enough battles? Let's finish'em off and live in peace." He leaned back into the fur staring up at the sky.
WE ARE TWO DIFFERENT POWERS. A TINY STUPID TOAD AND ME THE NINE-TAILED FOX, THE DESTROYER. WE WERE NEVER MEANT TO MERGE. FORGET THIS PATH AND FIND ANOTHER. The fox's words ruffled Naruto's hair.
Naruto groaned and dropped his head. He supposed it made sense. One was an amphibian and the other a mammal. Maybe they were too different to work together. "You sure? Couldn't we try? Please?" He turned his head to see that eye again.
NOW YOU BEG. BE A MAN. YOUR BLASTED FATHER ALWAYS FOUND A WAY TO MAKE WHAT HE WANTED HAPPEN. ARE YOU TOO WEAK TO DO THE SAME? Kyuubi's growl seemed to mock Naruto.
He yelled again then sat silently brooding. First it was the old toad promising him an easy fix then it wouldn't work because of the stupid fox and now the stupid fox was taunting him that he wasn't the man his father was. Worst part was he knew Minato and Kushina were there watching him, waiting to see if he would succeed or fail. "Adults always expect too damn much!" He muttered and stood. "Fine I'll find a way to do it without your help!" Naruto stood then turned to look at the fox again. "I should make it rain in here." He was annoyed when the fox just laughed at him. "Geez. Bye jerk. See ya Ma, Pa…I love you!" He patted the fox as he turned and stalked away.
Naruto came back to Mount Myoboku and propped his head up on his fist. He plucked at grass before him. "Can't merge and I can't stand still to pull in nature energy. Well I'll just have to learn how to do it while moving!" He slapped his thigh and stood up.
"Not possible boy!" The small toad said as he came closer. He was kind of disappointed because all Naruto had done was sit there. If he'd talked to the Nine-Tails he hadn't seen a thing. "You have to be still to draw in nature energy!" Fukasaku insisted.
"I have to find a way. Kyuubi all but dared me to find a way and I'll be damned if I don't show that big idiot up! Quit fussing and let's get to training. I will do this!" Naruto vowed, face set and eyes determined.

Takeshi and Talon flew. The hawk of course had been born to fly but Takeshi needed more practice. He'd been dazzled and daunted by the thunderbird's home. Everything was larger than everything he'd known before; bigger trees, bigger mountains, bigger oceans and bigger animals. Takeshi thought the animals in the Forest of Death had been big but these put them to shame. Kaminari who'd seemed so large was in fact only partially grown. When the thunderbirds flew, they filled the sky and yet they didn't. His head hurt the first few days just trying to take it all in. Talon had been shaken too by the vastness of this world and loss of his synch with Naruto but the irresistible urge to fly soon had him shaking off his fears as he joined his fellow avian in the sky.
The phoenix sang almost constantly so happy she was to be surrounded by birds of comparable strength and wisdom. She communicated with all the thunderbirds learning, teaching, sharing just talking or singing all the while Takeshi was training.
Of course the training had to be made up as they went along since a bird sage had never before existed. It was decided that the way of the toad would be the example they would follow. Naruto was learning to fight and move like toads and so Takeshi would learn to fight like a bird of prey in the sky. With the phoenix's help he had wings and now he would learn how to fly properly. Talon was a great help with this. With their synch he could match his movements to Talon's. He even improved on his wings changing some of the feathers so that they caught the wind currents just so.
Sage mode was different here too. Because there was so much of it, with an abundance of nature, Takeshi was more powerful. It seemed the place had an effect on Talon as well. The hawk in the past had relied on Naruto to give him chakra but it seemed here Talon had either absorbed chakra as did he or was finally able to tap into his own. Man and bird would have much to surprise their family with when they reunited.

"Very good Sasuke. Your genjutsu is practically perfect. Kakashi yours is good but your eye is better at seeing, copying, analyzing. Stick with that unless the advantage is yours." Itachi told them. "Sasuke show me the Amaterasu and Kakashi the Kamui." He turned away to also perform the Amaterasu and marveled that there was no pain. His Mangekyo Sharingan had been reborn and revitalized. He put the black fire out and turned to see a rock reappear at his feet. "Good one Kakashi." Itachi said with a laugh. "Having trouble Sasuke?" He asked since the black fire was starting to spread.
"No, just watching it burn. It's fairly horrible but fascinating." Sasuke said quietly then stiffened his shoulders and put the fire out. "How are we doing?" He turned to his brother noting how much better he looked. It was hard to believe just how close he came to losing him.
"Fine, very well in fact. It is I who needs more training with my cub over there." Itachi smiled over at Nozomi who was sunning herself without a care in the world.
"Well I think you should get in line." Sasuke murmured as he quickly summoned Koneko. "Hey…" Suddenly he covered his ears as the saber tooth let out a deafening roar.
Lazy cub! Get up! The huge black cat stalked over to Nozomi and butted the cub sending it rolling several feet.
"Koneko?" Itachi said with a wince. He ears were ringing and was a little worried for Nozomi who wobbled as she got to her feet. She'd gained weight but was still small and awkward.
I will take her into the woods. You spoil her too much – she needs to learn to be a ninja cat and she should be talking some by now. You humans do your training and leave Nozomi's to me. She circled around and rubbed against Sasuke scent marking him then gave him a lick. We'll be back before the sun sets. Koneko flicked her tail at Itachi before nipping down and picking Nozomi up by the scruff of the neck and bounding off. A plaintive mew echoed from behind them.
"I feel sorry for that cub." Kakashi said shaking his head and lowering his headband. "How about some sword practice Sasuke? I need to rest my eye for a while."
"Yeah sure. You want a tanto or a katana?" Sasuke asked as he headed for the dojo. They had an impressive amount of swords on hand.
"Tanto. Most ninja use a tanto." Kakashi said stretching out his muscles.
"I'll take a sword." Itachi commented as he swept off his cloak. "You should learn to fight against both weapons besides," Itachi looked appraisingly over at Kakashi. "I want to face off against the son of the White Fang to see if you are as good as your father's reputation."
"You know of my father do you? Well I don't know how you'll judge since he was dead long before your birth but I'll give it my best shot. Go on Sasuke, get the swords." Kakashi waved him on for he'd stood intrigued.
They faced off in the street. Sasuke drew out his sword and the metallic sound accompanied his action. A tanto slipped its sheath followed by another sword. Both men brandished their weapons getting a feeling for them. Itachi held his sword down by his thigh. Sasuke held his out in front of him and Kakashi held his out to one side close to his chest. They studied each other then all at once burst into action. A loud clang broke the silence as the three blades met.
Kakashi was at the disadvantage with his shorter blade but his long reach more than made up for it. Sasuke held his own in the beginning being the least knowledgeable with the sword but his brother and his sensei soon had him on the defensive. Kakashi with a twist of his wrist and the crowding of Sasuke's space disarmed the boy leaving only the elder Uchiha to face off against. He got not one second to appreciate his victory for Itachi sprang into action and the dance of blades was intense. It wasn't a stationary battle but one that took them up and down the street, over rubble yet to be cleared away and up some steps. It was here that Itachi stumbled and Kakashi pressed his advantage.
"Hey!" Sasuke yelled as he ran forward. Itachi's back was pressed against a crumbling wall with Kakashi holding his tanto with both hands at his throat. "Kakashi's win." He said a little disappointed.
Kakashi laughed. "Not really. Your brother found nice vulnerable spot, one Anko would surely miss!"
Sasuke got to where he could see his brother's sword puncturing Kakashi's pants where every man housed the family jewels. He grinned and then he laughed. "Good one, I'll have to remember that!"
Itachi was breathing hard for this had been a true test of his health and ability while not using the Sharingan. "And now I know the White Fang has a son worthy to carry on his legacy." He nodded respectfully at Kakashi.
Kakashi nodded back and slowly backed off. "Damn that was close and you weren't even using the Sharingan!" There was sweat on his face as he shivered at the thought of being cut down there.
Sasuke shook his head. "Apparently I've got more work to do when it comes to the sword." He reasoned as he helped his brother up. Neither man had used their Sharingan where he would have. His training would have to include doing every action with and without his kekkei genkai in order to be the brother Naruto needed and to improve the Uchiha name.
"Little brother time to work on the Susano'o – go. I will watch from here." Itachi ordered as he sat down on the steps to rest.
Sasuke stared at him but Itachi only stared back. The two older men would get a break while he continued to train. He wouldn't argue for if he knew TK and Naruto at all they were improving every minute of the day. Sighing Sasuke went out into the street and let his eyes change.
Naruto and Hinata were surprised one morning when they showed up for training. Lord Fukasaku and Lady Shima were gone as in not on the mountain. Gamakichi and Gamatatsu were waiting on them and would oversee their training.
"Wait I'm supposed to be learning how to merge with the Geezer! How can I do that if he's not here?! Where'd he go?! Look there's not a lot of time left and I need to finish my training!" Naruto stomped about in front of Gamakichi.
"Beat's me kid. They took off last night so Pa told us to come and train with you." Gamakichi explained with a shrug.
"Maybe they went to find some good food. Can we get this over with? I'm hungry." Gamatatsu whined.
Hinata rolled her eyes. "Let's just practice on our own Naruto. There's not much you can do since Lord Fukasaku isn't here." She was very curious though since the sages were aware they had a slim time table before the next battle with the Akatsuki. "And they are quite old, maybe they needed a break." Hinata said with a laugh. She knew that despite their ages, those toads were more than capable.
Naruto sighed and gave his wife a small smile. "Hell since the sages are away – let's play!" He suddenly perked up as he walked over to Gamatatsu and slapped a hand against the toad's side. "You're it!" He grinned mischievously grabbed his wife's hand and pulled her after him. "Catch us if you can!"
Gamakichi laughed. "If you can catch us – then you'll get to eat!" He hopped off in another direction leaving a whining Gamatatsu behind.
"Do we have to? Come back guys…awww." Reluctantly the toad chased after the humans since his brother was faster than he was. But he was surprised at just how agile the humans were and their hopping had so improved that they stayed out of reach and taunted him unmercifully. Gamakichi found it terribly funny and that was how Gamatatsu was able to finally tag his brother while he was on the ground laughing.
Catching his breath Gamakichi set off on the hunt. His target was Naruto from the start. His brother was no fun to chase and it seemed wrong to go after the kid's wife so it was Naruto verses Gamakichi. The toad was impressed with Naruto's ability to evade him. They traveled all about the forest before Gamakichi proved to Naruto that a toad wasn't all about how far and high one could jump. In the middle of an impressive leap, Gamakichi's tongue struck out and caught Naruto about the waist stopping him from getting two feet off the limb he'd been on and bringing him flying back towards the toad's mouth.
"ACK! DON'T SWALLOW ME!" Naruto screamed as he saw the open maw of his friend. All of a sudden he was falling through the air twirling down to the ground so rapidly the world spun and hit the ground with a thunk.
"I wanted to catch you not eat you!" Gamakichi told him with his tongue firmly back in his mouth. "And by the way – you're it!"
Hinata held off running to him. Gamakichi would never hurt Naruto but she could only imagine how dizzy he must be. "You okay? Naruto?"
He lay still on the ground holding his stomach. Naruto blinked then groaned. "…I will…be…" A loud belch escaped him and he turned over thinking that he was going to throw up but he was spared that humiliation. Naruto waited until the world seemed normal again before trying to stand up. "Water then…I'm coming…for you…sweet-heart." Naruto found her up in the tree and he winked but still looked a little green.
Hinata laughed. "Sure thing baby. You do that, maybe I'll even let you catch me!"
Naruto wobbled to a stream to wash out his mouth and refresh himself. He sprang without warning and though Hinata still had her Byakugan active she almost didn't move fast enough. Falling backwards out of the tree she put just enough space between them to get ahead. They flew through the trees running, jumping, leaping shaking the limbs and sending birds flying.
Hinata squealed as fingers slipped through her long hair. Neither of them carried weapons so she began breaking off tree limbs and sending them flying back at her husband.
Bad move sweetheart! Naruto said in her mind as he swatted away a wooden missive. He focused his eyes on his wife's round bottom and concentrated.
Hinata planned a feint. She was going to head one way then double back behind Naruto but never got the chance. One foot was about to push off when a burst of air hit her butt and lifted her up off her feet. Hinata had to raise her hands to protect her face from slapping leaves then suddenly the wind was gone and she was falling. A scream started in her throat only to cut off abruptly as Naruto caught her in his arms. "Tag – you're it!" Blue eyes glinted in the sun as his mischievous smile filled his face. Juggling her just a bit Naruto slapped her ass.
"Oww! Hey no fair!" Hinata pouted but couldn't hold it not when Naruto looked at her that way. She gave in and kissed him.
The group of toads and humans realized they'd spent the morning at their play and much to Gamatatsu's delight; they stopped for lunch and a nap.
"You'd think they'd be back by now." Naruto said stretching as he got up from bed. It was late afternoon. The two of them had taken a bath, made love and slept but there was still no sign of two sages.
"Maybe they're off trying to figure out a way for you to merge." Hinata yawned as she dressed in a blue/lavender dress. "But I have to say I enjoyed not training today. It was nice to have a day to ourselves." She came up behind him and kissed his bare back. Naruto was still nude and she ran her hands over his toned stomach.
"Does this mean you want to go back to bed?" Naruto suggested as her hands tickled his hip bones and threaded into the hair at his groin.
"Yes I do but we won't! Cover this rod up and let's go find out what's going on." She nipped his shoulder as she let her hands stroke him ever so lightly then let go.
"Tease!" Naruto accused as she left him yearning for more of her touch. But he found some clothes to wear. Before it had irked him some to miss out on his training but he was starting to get a little worried and wondered if they should try to find Gamabunta. Somebody had to know where Lord Fukasaku and Lady Shima were.
They exited their little house and began to wander towards civilization. Where they were training was out of the way of the other toads plus the older toads' home were kind of isolated to begin with. The earth shook as Gamakichi landed just in front of them.
"Hey where's your dad?" Naruto asked as he tried to look beyond the young toad. You would think a toad as big a mountain wouldn't be hard to miss.
"…Naruto-boy…" A soft voice said from Gamakichi's head.
Naruto and Hinata backed up until they could see the top of their friend's head. On it sat Lady Shima. "Naruto you need to return to Konoha…it's Jiraiya-boy. He's been injured." Lady Shima looked sad and worried as she spoke these words.
His heart jerked so hard in his chest it hurt. Naruto had been holding Hinata's hand and now he clutched at it. He blinked up at her then at Gamakichi. Naruto finally looked at his wife still struck mute then back at Shima and shook his head. "…no…how bad? Dying?" He began to breathe hard.
"I'll contact Sasuke and he'll summons us home." Hinata suggested as she moved closer to Naruto hugging his arm against his chest.
"No need. Pa's still with him. He said ten minutes. Just wait and you'll be there shortly. He is not dead Naruto." Lady Shima said firmly as Naruto's body seemed taunt with tension.
"He's with Lady Tsunade Naruto. She won't let him go!" Hinata whispered as Naruto's desperate blue eyes met hers. Though they would be home shortly Hinata still reached out to their brothers
Sasuke, Itachi! We're coming home. Jiraiya's been hurt. We need you.
SISTER! They both answered. We'll meet you at the hospital! Sasuke said quickly as he turned off the stove and ran for the front door. He was outside in seconds and saw Itachi on the porch of Hinata and Naruto's house. "Come on!"
"I can't!" Itachi exclaimed and felt horrible. "I'm not allowed Sasuke." He went to his brother pain registering on his face as he felt Naruto's fear. "Go, go – be with them!"
Sasuke was anxious to be with Naruto and angry at Itachi's imprisonment. "Dammit." He whispered and clutched his brother's arm. "Stay linked with me." They opened the synch up fully between them practically making their minds one.
Itachi nodded. "Go on, they're here." He felt them the moment they appeared suddenly nearer, closer and the fear so very fresh off of Naruto.
Sasuke didn't speak but ran. He was out of the gate in seconds, jumped up to the rooftops and towards the hospital. "Damn pervert you'd better be alright!" He muttered.
Naruto blinked to see the hospital garden. The grass was covered in a fine frost, bare trees reached for the overcast sky. There in front of him was Lord Fukasaku, Lady Tsunade, Iruka and Asuma. He shivered violently part in fear the rest because he was dressed for summer and in Konoha it was definitely winter. "Dad?"
"Inside you two." Iruka hurried closer removing his coat and giving it to Hinata before stepping between them putting an arm around them both.
"Ma – Lady Tsunade?" Naruto asked looking over his shoulder at the Hokage. "How is he?" For just a moment he'd forgotten and had been about to call her mama.
"Inside, I'll tell you inside." She pushed on his back moving them forward and out of the cold. Most people thought he was still in the village staying inside the district. Tsunade had no reason to dispel that theory and had asked Fukasaku to summon Naruto out in the privacy of the gardens. Once inside she lead them down a quiet hallway.
"S-Sasuke's coming. Can he j-join us?" Hinata was cold and she turned into Iruka looking for warmth.
"Asuma bring him back." Tsunade ordered and waited until the Jonin had left.
"He's alive Naruto. Jiraiya's a strong man but he suffered a major shock. I've got him stabilized but he's still weak. He wants to see you, to tell you what he's learned. Try not to tire him too much and Naruto – don't pity him." Tsunade requested softly. She reached out and took his hand and held it tight. It wasn't the hug she wanted or thought he needed but it would do.
Naruto opened his mouth to ask what Jiraiya's condition was but shut it again. Tsunade was the best healer around and plus she loved Jiraiya. Whatever had happened to him she'd kept him alive and would keep him alive. "Yeah okay." He gripped her hand then stepped forward and gave her a quick hug but he still had Iruka by the arm. Naruto felt exposed, raw. He wanted and need the touch of his loved ones.
"Naruto!" Sasuke said in a harsh whisper as he hurried forward. "Hey, here." He stripped off the jacket of his kimono he'd been wearing at home having run off without a coat. "Sister." He leaned over to kiss Hinata's cheek as Naruto gratefully put the long sleeved garment on.
"Can we all go in?" Naruto asked his belly tight.
"Yes, let's go in." Tsunade pushed open the door.
Two masked men were inside, one standing guard at the door and another by the lone window. There were also two medical nin keeping an eye on the machines and the patient lying in the hospital bed. Flowers had been brought in to add color to the room and there were books on nearby table – the patient's own books as well as several girly magazines.
Naruto walked forward frowning. The old man looked the same to him. Yeah it was obvious he'd been in a battle, there were bruises and cuts on his face and shoulders but what…? He pulled in a harsh breath as one of the nins stepped away from the bed. "His arm – his left arm is gone!" Naruto croaked his breath not fully back.
Hinata covered her mouth and turned into Iruka who also stared in disbelief. Tsunade hadn't said or rather she had been unable to speak of it. This was the man she loved and he'd been gravely injured. Apparently she'd saved his life but now Jiraiya one of the three great shinobi, the Sannin was maimed for life.
Asuma stayed by the door also staring at his failure. The guilt in not protecting or even in joining the fight no matter how futile his skills would have been would haunt him.
Sasuke moved up to stand at Naruto's side. "He's alive Naruto. He came back like he promised." The dark-haired teen reminded him. He held back the horror at seeing such a strong man so disabled. The Akatsuki had always been powerful but to see this done to one of their strongest…
Naruto nodded quickly and took in some deep breaths. He reached for Sasuke's wrist and pulled him along as he went to stand beside the bed. Naruto glanced once at Tsunade who nodded her consent then back at the old man. "P-pervy Sage, wake up." He tried to keep his voice normal but it shook. "Old man – wake up!"
Jiraiya jerked his head. "Quiet kid, can't you see I'm sleeping?" He grumbled. "You can't be hungry again." Jiraiya said disgusted then tried to sit up. He froze when his left arm or rather when he didn't feel it moving. "Oh…yeah…" He shuddered and finally opened his eyes. "Naruto I have that Intel you wanted." Though weak, still in shock and pain Jiraiya was determined not to let what happened keep him from helping Naruto.
Again Naruto was stopped cold by his godfather then he nodded and gently sat on the bed. Had there been a hand there he would have held it but Naruto just placed his hand on Jiraiya's leg. "Tell me."
The door eased open and Kakashi slid into the room to stand at Asuma's side. A thousand questions waited upon his tongue as dread settled over his heart seeing Jiraiya in a hospital bed.
Jiraiya squirmed about in bed trying to get comfortable. He reached over and touched his left shoulder and wished for his arm. Still holding on he said, "He's the same as you Naruto. You and Pain share something in common – I taught you both. He was once my student and damned if he didn't learn all his lessons and more. So much more…" He didn't want to look but he couldn't help himself. His arm was simply gone.
There was a collective inhale at the thought that Pain was someone they knew. "He's from Konoha? I've never known a shinobi named Pain!" Kakashi unable to stay silent stepped forward.
Jiraiya looked up with a grimace. "No he is from Ame. I met him and his friends just after our battle with Hanzo." Now he looked at Tsunade.
"Those three orphans? Pain is one of those kids?! But-but you raised them, taught them ninjutsu, were with them for at least three years!" Tsunade began to pace her hair snapping with each turn. "One of those brats thanked you by doing this?!" She stomped the floor as she turned and pointed at his missing arm.
Hinata blinked back tears at the anguish she felt from Naruto. It was sharp and deep as he learned that some unknown kid had had Jiraiya's undivided attention for three years. He'd taken care of this Pain and two others. Jiraiya had spent days, weeks and years teaching them, being there for them. It hurt.
Lord Fukasaku joined Naruto on the bed. "You did the right thing Jiraiya-boy. You had no way of knowing he would turn out like this. Which of the Pains was he?"
"What do you mean which one?" Sasuke asked angrily.
Asuma joined the conversation. "Pain is not just one man. They are six people and all of them are Pain."
"No, no there is actually only one but he controls the other six." One of the machines began to beep rapidly and the nins came back to the bed making Naruto move as they checked on Jiraiya's condition. "He controls them with the Rinnegan!" He forced out the words just before he passed out.
The group moved to a nearby waiting area to wait for Jiraiya to regain consciousness. Tsunade knew that he wanted to tell them everything as quick as possible. So she'd give him time to rest then they'd finish the debrief but until then they could question Asuma and Lord Fukasaku.
"What's the Rinnegan?" Naruto asked before anyone else could speak.
"The ultimate ocular jutsu. The Rinnegan is more powerful than my Sharingan and Hinata's Byakugan. It's said that all jutsu come from it." Sasuke informed him as he stared down at the floor his mind racing. Back in the district Itachi was also thinking hard. If they were up against Rinnegan users – this battle might already be lost.
Still holding Hinata close to his side Iruka continued. "Do you remember hearing about the Sage of Six Paths Naruto? Naruto?" His son seemed out of it but he came closer and Iruka reached out to cup his neck. "The Sage of Six Paths?"
"Yeah, yeah Dad. He was the first shinobi right?" His heart seemed to thaw with the warmth of Iruka's hand.
"He possessed the Rinnegan and through his powers ninjutsu was developed. If this Pain has the Rinnegan it would explain how he was able to defeat Jiraiya." Iruka said a bit of awe overcoming him as he drew Naruto under his arm.
"Wait you need to understand something." Asuma said coming forward. "He faced off against six of these people – Pains and each one of them had the Rinnegan. Now Master Jiraiya says there's actually a seventh controlling the others. How? How are there six or rather seven people with the Rinnegan and if it's so damn powerful how can one control all the others?!"
"Jiraiya-boy figured it out while fighting the Pains. It's why he kept fighting instead of retreating. He had to know the secret to help you Naruto. And he had to find out if he could why this child whom he'd taught had strayed so badly to become this Pain person." Lord Fukasaku was back in his carrier but he was now before Naruto silently urging the teen to understand Jiraiya's plight and not to blame the man for his past actions.
"I'm never going to understand why Lady Tsunade and Jiraiya did some of the things they did. I'm doing my best to let a lot of shit go because it just tears me up inside to think about it." Naruto took a deep breath as he stared down at the toad and he was grateful for Iruka's support. "But yeah he went to Ame because I asked and he stayed alive to come home and tell me what he'd found out. I won't ever forget that. He's still my godfather." There was pride in his voice at being able to call Jiraiya family. The toad nodded and smiled.
We know it still hurts you Naruto. Itachi said gently to him. It's okay to feel that way. Jiraiya did us a favor though. I knew not about the number of Pains. The only one I knew was the red-haired one, the one we called Leader. Let us hope the rest of the Intel is just as valuable.
Yeah I bet it is and I guess it hurt Jiraiya too. He faced off against someone he'd been really close to at one time. I owe this Pain for hurting us both. Thanks Itachi. Naruto straightened from where he'd been leaning against Iruka and held out his hand for Hinata. "Let's sit down sweetheart. Sasuke." They moved to a couch and sat with Naruto in the middle. "It's not impossible Sasuke." He said in response to his brother's thoughts. "It'll be hard, I can't imagine how hard but Pervy Sage survived and we will too." Naruto stated with certainty. He would believe that too because to do otherwise meant certain death.
Sasuke looked at his baby brother. Tanned, muscular and now a sage just like Jiraiya. They also had TK who was also a sage, his brother who'd come into his own power at an early age and Sasuke was sure he hadn't seen all of Itachi's abilities yet. It was himself who needed to improve and to believe in just as Naruto believed in them all. "Okay. I won't hold us back." Sasuke promised.
"We know that." Hinata smiled over at him with love and conviction in her eyes. "But don't forget about me Sasuke. This isn't a battle just for the guys." She eyed him until he sheepishly grinned. "That's right I can kick your skinny butt to remind you in case you forget it!" Hinata was glad she'd gotten them to laugh. Getting depressed was only going to hurt their efforts.
"Umm I've got a thought." Kakashi said also taking a seat. "Maybe those other Rinnegan aren't real or at least just not as powerful as the mastermind's. I have a Sharingan but I'm not an Uchiha. Yes I can do many things with it but not like what an Uchiha can do with their own. It just may be possible to take them down one by one. Master Jiraiya fought them all at once?" He looked over at Asuma.
"Not to start. There were some summons first and later the other Pains but not all six until the end, right Lord Fukasaku?" The Jonin turned to the toad.
"That's right. I hadn't thought of it but when he at first couldn't defeat Jiraiya he summoned a couple of the Pains then later all of them. You're right!" he pointed at Kakashi. "He found it hard battling against us and got more help just as Jiraiya-boy called on Ma and me. Just maybe they can be taken down if they're separated." Fukasaku gave a sharp nod.
There was a bit of optimism felt by all at this revelation. Asuma was asked to describe what he had seen of the battle and they listened impressed by the skill of both combatants. Lord Fukasaku also added a few explanations along the way. Everyone was filing away the information so they could analyze it on their own and come up with counters.
"My lady?" One of the nins stepped out into the hall and Tsunade rushed over to speak with him then followed him back into the room.
Hinata curled up beside Naruto for she was still cold in her lightweight dress. "It seems you'll need to learn to merge too Naruto. It may be what gives you the edge against Pain." She stroked his thigh which was cold to the touch.
"Merging? What's that about Naruto?" Iruka asked.
"Lord Fukasaku says it's the last form of becoming a sage. We'd merge our bodies – he'd sit on my shoulder and that way he could draw in the nature chakra while I continue to fight but it hasn't worked so far." Naruto gave a brief explanation on why it was necessary for one to be still to draw in nature energy. "I'm trying to learn how to do it while still moving but…" He shrugged.
"What about your specialty Naruto wouldn't that work? I know it did when you were learning how to control wind chakra." Kakashi blinked then grinned when Naruto sat up quickly.
"Yeah! Yes that's it!" He began to laugh and his eyes glow. Naruto got up and suddenly hugged his uncle Kakashi. "You're the man as always! It will work I know it will!" He grinned and laughed some more as Kakashi returned the hug.
"At least something good came out of this." Asuma said with a weak smile.
"You got him out of there. Master Jiraiya is alive and home because you were there. Thank you." Hinata said reaching out to hold his hand. "You have to forgive yourself Asuma because you didn't do anything wrong. How's Kurenai and the baby? Got any pictures?" She was gratified to see his eyes light up at the thought of his family.
There was more talk of babies and training until Tsunade returned. "He's awake again and he won't rest until he's told us all of it. If you have questions make them direct and let's get this over with. I want him to rest and…recover." The Hokage was upset. He was still a shinobi but no longer the man he'd been. She worried over his health but more his peace of mind.
Naruto with Hinata moved to face her. "He won't let this break him so don't let it break you. He'll be fine." Naruto let himself hug her, held on and briefly let himself enjoy the embrace of the woman who'd been his mother. "Okay?" He said pulling away. Tsunade couldn't speak but nodded then lead the way back into Jiraiya's room.
"Naruto." Jiraiya held out his right hand and clasped the teen's tightly when he came around the bed to take it. "Where was I?"
"The Rinnegan, this guy controls everyone with that." Naruto looked at him. Today he looked like an ordinary old man in a hospital bed. Naruto wanted nothing more than to see him on his feet again and hear his crazy laugh.
He nodded. "Yes but its more than that. I think it must be the piercings. All of them have piercings throughout their bodies I assume to receive chakra from Nagato. That's his name Naruto, Nagato." Jiraiya gave a pained smile. "Even your names are similar but because of this," He motioned at his shortened arm. "That he was able not only to turn his back on me but try to kill me, I know you are the one. No even before this when I first saw you so damned determined to learn, looking like your father and acting like your mother. Saving the shinobi world falls on you Naruto. Your heart so beaten and bruised but so able to love is going to save us all." Jiraiya smiled at Naruto pride shining out of his eyes.
Seeing that smile eased a lot of Naruto's earlier pain. He brought Jiraiya's hand up to his chest. "I got no idea what you're talking about but I'll try." And it made him laugh because it seemed impossible but he would try just for this crazy, perverted old man and for all his family.
"Jiraiya what did you mean about the piercings?" Tsunade eased up to the bed. "How do you know it's not the Rinnegan alone?" She also checked his vitals and provided a little healing energy to his body.
Jiraiya closed his eyes as he felt the strength she gave him. "They were all dead. At least I believe them to be dead, one I know for certain died years ago. Each of the Pains was somebody I'd fought before. Besides they had no personality, they were just puppets being controlled by Nagato." He met the gazes of his friends solemnly. "This will be an all out battle. Don't pull any punches for Nagato will stop at nothing to get what he wants." Now his gaze went back to Naruto and he squeezed the boy's hand again. "I hear you're a sage now, congrats kid!"
Naruto shivered as he was reminded that this Pain/Nagato wanted him then nodded. "Yep but I got a few skills to bone up on before I bypass you." He teased.
"And you will. I look forward to seeing it." And he would. Jiraiya vowed to live to see Naruto accomplish the impossible.
"I assume you tried to talk to him, any way to talk him down?" Kakashi asked. It was rare that it worked but he'd be willing to try.
"It was war Kakashi. You've experienced it. I've begun to speculate that he assumed the name Pain for everything that's happened to him since I left them. He had to fight to stay alive, probably lost friends and instead of finding a path to peace he chose the road to hell and is going to take the rest of us with him. No don't try talking to him – just…kill him." Jiraiya sighed as he remember the young, gentle boy Nagato had been.
"And the woman?" Asuma asked then explained to the others. "There was a woman with Pain but she didn't have any of the piercing and seemed a close ally."
"She is and her name is Konan – another of Nagato's friends and one of my pupils. Her specialty is origami. She can make it come alive. Paper is as effective to her as a kunai is to the rest of us. Kinda like Sai I guess but more because her skills allow her to do the same to her body."
"What's that mean?" Sasuke questioned.
"Her body will become paper. She can change into whatever can be made out of paper."
Sasuke frowned. "So she could what infiltrate the village and spy on us?!" Everything he heard just only made his stomach churn.
Jiraiya nodded slowly but thought it unlikely. The Akatsuki didn't sneak, they boldly attacked. "War made using tailed beasts will be his ultimate threat on the world. He plans to use them to destroy anyone who opposes him so the threat will stop all killing and end war. A rash utterly insane idea but if he's not stopped it will happen. Fear will be constant because if your country acts out in any way, Pain will destroy it. And war will stop." The old man shook his head for it would end war but the absolute violence to accomplish it was just plain wrong.
Silence fell upon them as they digested the Toad Sage's words. Only the machines made audible noises. Finally Naruto scooted closer and hugged Jiraiya gently. "Thanks for coming home. I gotta go see Itachi then get back to the mountain to finish my training. Don't flirt with the nurses or Lady Tsunade may put you in a coma, okay?" Naruto tilted his head to one side and joined in the chuckles that escaped Jiraiya.
"You got it kid now get going. And I'm really happy to be home." Jiraiya assured him. Thoughts of how he would live disabled were pushed from his mind as he concentrated on the young man before him. Naruto - the child of prophecy.
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and I wish you a very Happy New Year.
