His cousin smiled at him. James waved his goodbye and walked away in the dark tunnel. Dan was panting and running after him. "James! Wait!" he shouted. "Wait! Don't go!". James stopped walking and slowly knelt down with arms around himself. He was shivering. "James?" Dan came closer. He felt cold all of the sudden. When James faced Dan, Dan backed out in horror.
Oh, God...the flesh melted away and the person that Dan no longer recognized as James turned in to a skeletal humanoid with...bizarre dragonfly wings. It was huge...a gigantic creature with chilling aura that made Dan froze on the spot. It reached its cold hands to grabbed Dan and-...
...and Dan jolted up on the hospital bed, sweating.
-Two days before the transmission-
The room was awfully bright and Dan felt like he was on the table for autopsy. Scary thought. Then, worries washed over him and he looked around for agent Crystal and Joe. They weren't in the room with him. The trail of blood caught his attention. The trail started around his bed and all the way to the door. Something or someone was here. Dan jumped off the bed and ran out, following the trail of blood down the corridor.
A shrill scream filled the corridor then followed by several gunshots. The blood trail led Dan to the canteen and he knocked the door down. Crystal was on the floor, crawling away from a bulky mutant...with a spear. It snarled and was about to impale the agent when Dan rushed in and tackled it down on the floor. "Dan!" Crystal shrieked. "D-Dan! Don't!"
Dan pinned it down...then he gaped at what he saw. Sharp bones shot out from the mutant's back and knocked Dan off its back. 'No...not bones.' Dan thought when he saw the entire frame of the mutant. 'Those are...' ...wings.The mutant spread its wings and just went out through the window. Crystal was shaking on the floor, gazing at the window. There was something in her eyes that Dan couldn't believe that he would see it from her: fear. The first impression that Dan got from her was that she was a fearless agent. That first impression was fading away. Anyone would be scared to death if a huge mutant...with wings…cornered them.
"What are you doing here? What happened?" Dan slowly brought her up to her feet. Crystal looked at Dan. She was still pretty shaken from the previous encounter. "Y-you..." she stuttered. "...s-saved me again..." "...again?" Dan frowned. He waited until Crystal calmed herself down. "You shot the flying mutant that caught me." Crystal explained. The scream...
"It dropped me and...I think maybe the gunshot scared them off. They flew away and I..." she clutched her side again. "...dragged you and Joe in the elevator...patched you guys up and look for a pack of ice then..."
"That thing showed up." Dan finished it. He felt relieved that he didn't shoot Crystal before he passed out. "...Thank you." Crystal said. "You're...welcome." Dan nodded. He and Crystal left to canteen and went back to the corridor. "Where's Joe? Is he alright?" Crystal was silent for a moment then she answered. "He...I think that impact really hit him hard. He's still alive but...I have no clue when he'll come back to..." She glanced down at her PDA. "I gave a call...a message out to every agents I could think of...but none of them answered back. I think..." the agent didn't finish the sentence but Dan could guess what she tried to say. 'They couldn't be all...dead.' Dan frowned at the thought.
They entered the room marked 'dispensary' and Dan saw Joe lying on the table, still unconscious. Crystal sighed. "We can't stay here for long... Those flying mutants knew that we're here. They'll be back for us." "Both you and Joe are in no shape for another quick escape on the road." "I know..." Crystal leaned on the wall, still clutching her side. Dan came closer to her. "Miss Crystal...are you...?"
"Help!...Is anybody here? Help...!"
They froze. There was someone outside the hospital, shouting.
It was Dan who made the first move to the door but Crystal pulled him back. "Dan..." she hesitated for a moment, then she let him go. "...be careful." "I'll be fine." Dan left. Crystal was left in the room and she glanced back to her PDA again as if she was hoping for somebody to return her message. A sudden static sound made her jump and she looked around for the source. To her surprise, it came from...a small radio tied to Joe's belt that she failed to notice when she pulled him in.
"...h-he...o?!" the voice barked through the radio. "...a..one c...py?!..."
It was Harris.
