CHAPTER 9
At about ten to eight I was waiting for Jade at the front door. I was a bit excited since this was the first time Jade would be spending some time with me voluntarily and besides that the cinema was in the city an about hour away so this would be my first time going there at all.
After five minutes of waiting Jade appeared with her trademark annoyed look on her face and without a word to me she went straight for the front door with me following her to wait for Cat infront of the house.
After a minute of silence I decided to carefully start a conversation.
"Which movie are we going to see?"
"Probably Chernobyl Diaries if they don't want to see our I.D.'s." Jade grumbled in response.
I hadn't heard of that one yet so I was curious.
"What kind of movie is it? Sounds like a documentary?"
Jade looked at me and her well-known evil smirk appeared on her face.
"Yes, it IS a documentary indeed, Vega."
She nodded appreciative.
This couldn't mean anything good. I couldn't get rid of the feeling that I was missing something very important here, but a horn pulled me out of my thoughts.
"Heeeeeeeey! hihi" the redhead pulled her head out of the car through the open window and smiled at us.
We got in the car, Jade in the front, naturally, I sat down in the back and Cat started talking again
"I aaam soooo excited! I'm going to the cinema with Jadeyyyy aaand..."
"Yeah. DRIVE!" Jade interrupted her.
Cat winced and started the Car.
"Toreeey, have you been in the city yet or is this your first time?" she giggled.
"No I haven't been there before. Remember when you guys suggested you could show me the city on my first day at your school? So, I was wondering if you might want to do it this weekend? Just so I can get to know some cool places and stuff, you know?"
"Yeay! I'd love to!"
"There's nothing I'd rather do." Jade commented her voice dripping of sarcasm and looked out of her window.
"Oh Jadey… common, it'll be fun!"
"Yes JADEY. It will be fun." I grinned at her in the side mirror and she shot me a deadly glance.
"So Cat, how's your brother?" Jade quickly changed the topic and the rest of the ride Cat kept telling us weird stories of her brother cutting of one of his toes and getting special treatment from "special doctors". I decided that one day I'd ask Cat about her family to maybe find out what had happened to her and her brother to make them seem so… well, weird would probably be the right word.
After about one hour and several mean comments by Jade, many giggles from Cat and a heated argument about the right radio station, which ended in Jade turning the radio off completely due to annoyance, we finally reached the cinema.
Cat let us out in front of it and went to find a parking lot so Jade and I could buy the tickets since we were a bit late.
"Three tickets for Chernobyl Diaries please." The boy on the ticket sale didn't look much older than Jade and me. He looked at us intensely and said "May I see your I.D.'s please?" with a criticizing look.
Jade shot me a gaze that basically told screamed DON'T RUIN THIS FOR US! Just play along!
She leaned forward so that the upper part of her body was leaning on the counter and looked at the boy that kind of flirty, intimidating manner.
She was grinning mischievously and said "Oooh, damnit. We forgot to bring them… but me and my friend here…", she touched my shoulder playfully and a weird feeling erupted in my stomach area.
She looked at me with the same flirty eyes she had just used on the sales assistant who's mouth was now opened partly making him look like he was about take Jade right here and now if he only had the guts to just move at all. Jade bit her lip shortly and went on "…really wanted to see this movie. You don't want to ruin our fun, do you?"
She now looked back at the boy and pouted like a sad innocent little child that she was most certainly NOT.
The boy looked really nervous now "Oh...oh okay. Well in that case I guess we can make an exception." He handed us the tickets nervously. He seemed to be shivering.
"Thank you." Jade winked at him, took me by my arm and pulled along behind her. I still hadn't recovered from the sight that had just been presented to me and stared at Jade probably looking like a complete idiot.
She giggled in a complete un-jade-like, girlish manner and said "Don't look at me like I am the 8th wonder of the world, Vega. At least we have our tickets now!"
I started grinning "You manipulative little bitch."
She grinned back "Uh, who would have thought little Vega would call someone a bitch someday…"
As we both started laughing we were interrupted by our little red headed friend
"Hey guys! Do you have the tickets yet? You know, I just met a strange man that looked like Sikowitz and he told me a funny story about a house full of candy!" both, Jade and me looked at Cat with a confused look on our faces now "oh kitten…" Jade said, patted her head while absentmindedly shaking her own head.
As we were about to take our seats inside the theater Cat spoke up once again "Oh crap, I forgot to get popcorn! Do you want some?"
"Yeah, go get me some with salt please, kitten." Jade asked quite nicely.
"I want some with salt too Cat, thank you" I said and Cat bounced away happily.
Once again it was just me and Jade. "I hope the movie is good. I honestly wouldn't have thought you were in these kinds of movies Jade." I tried breaking the awkward silence.
"What kind of movies, Vega?"
"Documentaries…" I said questioningly.
She smirked "Oh... we'll see." Before I could wonder about that weird reaction of hers a male voice interrupted our little conversation.
"Sorry Miss, I think you are sitting on my seat." A young man was now standing next to me.
"Are you sure? Oh, actually you are right" I answered, taking a look at my ticket. "I'm sorry Mister I thought this was seat 23."
I stood up and sat down on Jades other side.
"No problem, have fun on your date." He said and winked at us. I slowly turned towards Jade who was looking just as irritated as I felt. I took my a second to realize what the guy had meant.
"I think he thinks that…"
"I KNOW what he meant Vega. He must be mentally ill, a retard or something."
"Yeah…sure, mentally ill." I said quietly and I could feel my cheeks redden.
The next 5 minutes were the definition of awkward silence. With an uncomfortably thick tension filling the air between me and the darkhaired girl who seemed to be deeply in thoughts, staring straight ahead at the empty screen.
Luckily Cat came back with the popcorn soon, holding not three but two bowls of popcorn. She handed me one and sat down with the other.
"Where is mine?" Jade asked disbelievingly rising her eyebrows at Cat stuffing popcorn in her motuh eagerly.
"Yours?" Cat responded innocent.
"Yes, Cat, MINE! I wanted salty popcorn, remember?"
"Oh…" Cat stated with an apologetic look on her face.
"We can share mine." I helped out quickly worried about how serious the situation had become out of a sudden.
"In that case…" Jade said with a pleased smirk and took a huge hand of my popcorn. "And don't even think I'll pay half of it." I rolled my eyes and nodded.
I should have known better. OF COURSE Jade wouldn't want to see a DOCUMENTARY MOVIE. Naturally after the first half of the movie it turned out to be a horror flick. I was scared to death after a few minutes not being used to those kinds of movies at all.
I hadn't heard anything from Cat ever since a loud "IEEP" sound as result of the first scary scene and the constant silence from her end of the row had me seriously worried about her mental condition.
So with me being caught between being scared shitless and unable to look away jumping at every little scare and Cat being basically in a condition of constant shock not moving or talking at all, Jade seemed to be the only one enjoying herself.
She sat in her seat relaxed as ever and stared at the screen fascinated watching concentrated like she was scared to miss only one single bloody brutal scene.
She seemed to be very comfortable with the situation she was in, with one arm on the armrest next to me, the other one stuffed into what used to be MY bowl of popcorn between her legs, looking like she owned the place.
In one particular scary scene I jumped in my seat and grabbed the first thing that I could reach, which apparently turned out to be Jades hand on the armrest. I didn't realize it at first what or better who I was so desperately clinging too, grabbing it as hard as I could untill out of the corner of my eye I noticed two green eyes staring at me intensely through the darkness of the cinema.
I turned my head and staring right back into Jades eyes my gaze slowly wandering down to my hands on her and back up to her eyes.
I would've expected her to look angry, or pissed or disgusted even but she just looked at me with a mix of surprised confusion and something, I couldn't quite define, her eyebrows drawn to her forehead, eyes opened wide.
Although it was dark in the theater I couldn't help but notice something that could best be described as a small sparkle in her green orbs shining through the darkness of the room. Being captivated by the look she was giving me it took me moment to suddenly realize how her soft hand in mine seemed to be burning my skin.
That was it, the look on her face, I recognized it, that was the same look she had been wearing two nights ago while lying in my bed right next to me looking at me with the exact same thing showing in her eyes. What the hell was going on.
I could feel my heart pounding like I had just ran a marathon. She looked like she was about to say something, mouth slightly opened, when someone next to me cleared his throat lightly. Jade and me both jumped at the sound and drew our hands away. I turned around only to see Cat staring at us with an amused look on her face.
Suddenly everything just felt majorly awkward, not knowing where to put my hands now I slowly sank them on my lap awkwardly and tried to concentrate back on the movie even though I wasn't really paying attention to what was happening on the screen.
I was now painfully aware of Jades presence and closeness. It felt like an invisible force was pulling me towards her and I had to use all my strength to not be drawn away. I felt uncomfortable. I felt nervous and excited and afraid and I couldn't explain it to myself. Something very strange was going on here. The rest of the movie was basically still and silent torture.
When the credits started rolling down the screen I couldn't have been more relieved as we all stood up and exited the theater.
Cat was pale as piece of paper and shivering; obviously this movie hadn't been very good for her. Jade still displayed amusement due to the action onscreen but somehow seemed to be wrapped up in her thoughts more than before. Standing front of the cinema Cat turned to me "I'm gonna go get the car, okay? You two just wait here" she smiled at me, probably not as light as usual and darted away. For the third time this evening it was just Jade and me. We waited in silence. She still looked caught up in her own thoughts and I was kind of occupied with myself just as much.
It took a whole five minutes of waiting for one of us to finally break the silence "Ugh, where is our little silly?" Jade asked annoyed. Cat was taking long indeed.
"She'll pick us up every minute..." I answered, probably trying to calm myself down.
The silence emerged again.
As after yet another 5 minutes Cat still hadn't arrived I actually started worrying.
"Maybe we should call her...?"
I took Jades disinterested grunt as a sign of agreement, I took out my cellphone and dialed Cat's number.
After 2 minutes of dial tone I gave up and put my cellphone back in my jeans pocket.
"So..?" Jade looked at me with questioning gaze. "She didn't pick up. What now? I hope she is alright!"
"Of course she is. She just forgot to pick us up or got sucked into rainbow world through a toilet seat or found a cotton candy man or some crap like that."
She took out a cigarette pack, lit one and sat down on the pavement.
"You really should stop smoking Jade."
"Why? Because it relaxes my nerves or because it looks so damn good on me?" She smirked.
"No, because it's bad for you and gives you lung cancer and it doesn't look half as good as you might think."
I sat down next to her and instead of responding she took another drag and blew the smoke right into my face, grinning confidently. "You didn't seem to mind back on the party smoking my joint like a pro."
"Oh shut up." I said.
This was the first time one of us mentioned what happened at Riders since the day of the big hangover and it made me feel even more uncomfortable. When Jade had finished her cigarette she stood up and knocked off the dirt of her pants.
"Common, Vega. Stop sitting on the street like a homeless. Let's go search for Cat, maybe we'll find her if we follow her."
"You really think we shouldn't wait some more? I mean maybe she'll come back in a few minutes?"
"Oh please. Is little Vega scared of the unknown big bad town at night?" she put on a fake pout.
"No." I got up confidently and we started walking in the direction Cat had left.
I got out my cellphone again to write her a text message, just in case…
Where are you? We are coming your way, look out for us... What takes you so long? :(
After a few minutes of walking in the same direction I said "Do you have any idea where she might have parked the car? Or are we just walking?"
"Listen, if you have a better idea I would be very pleased to hear it, Vega."
"No I don't I just think that we shouldn't have left the cinema. Have you tried calling her? Maybe she'll pick it up if she sees it's you...?" my voice was now getting louder.
"I didn't bring my phone." she stated coolly.
"Okay I'll call her again." When I took out my phone the third time the screen was black.
At first I thought that I just had accidentally pushed the standby button but when it didn't react to any buttons I pushed, I figured that it probably had run out of battery.
"Oh crap!" I pressed out.
"What?! God Vega, you are so damn dramatic."
"My phone ran out of battery."
"Are you fucking kidding me?"
"Noooooo..." I cried out and let the phone once again slip into my pocket frustrated. As if to mock us, it started raining heavily in that exact moment.
"Perfect." Jade stated with sarcasm dripping voice "This is just perfect. I'm stuck in the city, god knows how many miles away from the next train station in the rain, in the middle of the night, and that not enough the only familiar person in reach is fucking VEGA, and we don't even have a freaking cellphone. Thank you!" she complained angrily and started stamping away before turning back around facing me. "THANK YOU GOD OR WHOEVER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS , and THANK YOU VEGA!" she was now more shouting then talking, throwing her hands up in frustration before she turned back around stomping ahead in a random direction...
