Okay, so I was tempted to combined this chapter and the next one to get them on their way quicker but decided against it, so this chapter and next at the camp and then the quest starts. :) So, just to reassure anyone is wondering, I am not going to drop this story, I always start with 10 pre-written chapters before posting in case of writers block and to see where I'm going with the story. And if anyone has suggestions or tips to help improve this story I'm all ears. To the guest (Dude) I've got a bit at the bottom about your review :) but for now, onto the chapter!
I didn't realise how much I missed campfires until I went to this one. Percy dragged me over to sit by him, Annabeth, Leo and Calypso along with their respective cabins. We were across the fire from Nico, Will, Piper and Jason, making funny faces at each other the whole time. When it came to smores they were my new favorite food.
I saw a small girl sitting in the fire and tending it, I caught her eye and waved at her. She winked at me before vanishing.
I saw Nico blushing at something Jason was saying and he caught my eye, silently pleading me to help him. It looked like he was getting mortally embarrassed.
"Hey Leo, can you use your fire powers to melt chocolate over my marshmallow?" I asked, handing Leo a piece of chocolate and a marshmallow.
"Is that all I am to you?" Leo asked, faking hurt.
"I thought you were Flaming Valdez, cook extraordinaire." I said, mocking him. "I guess not." I went to take my food back but he held it above my head.
"Prepare to be amazed." He said, his hand glowed a little and the chocolate bubbled in his palm, he rolled the marshmallow around in it until it was coated. "Gram crackers?"
"No thanks." I said.
He shrugged and handed me the marshmallow before licking chocolate from his palm. I looked over and saw Jason grinning as he apparently told an embarrassing story about Nico and Nico had his face in his hands. I brought my arm back and threw my chocolate coated marshmallow, hitting Jason on his forehead and making him blink. I quickly looked away, hiding my chocolate stained hands. I looked up and bit my lip to hide my laughter at the look of shock on Jason's face and I could hear Piper laughing and I saw Nico smirk in triumph.
Jason took a gram cracker and crumbled it into dust and sprinkling it on the marshmallow before coating it in more liquid chocolate and throwing the tiny projectile.
It hit Leo on the cheek and I covered my mouth to keep from laughing. He looked at Jason, then the marshmallow, then me.
"Oh." Was all he said. He leaned forwards and grabbed a chocolate bar, melting it in his hands along with a few marshmallows, then he poured it on my head.
"LEO!" I exclaimed, jumping in my seat.
"What's the matter?" He said with a cheeky grin, he flicked some chocolate into my face. "Can't handle the heat?"
I laughed as chocolate ran down my face and back, sticking to me. I licked the chocolate that came near my mouth and Leo put some cracker crumbs on me for good measure.
"Perfection." He said, kissing his fingers like those famous chefs do.
Percy looked over to tell me or Leo something and ended up laughing. I was about to hit him with food when Chiron stood up. "Heroes!" He yelled to get our attention. "Today we've got a new camper, Dianna Ross."
I waved a little and the campers smiled at me warmly. I smiled back and I heard a few snickers at the chocolate on my face.
"Do you know your godly parent?" Chiron asked me.
I nodded. "Hecate." I said.
"Hey sis!" A girl yelled and I looked over and saw a girl wave at me, a good natured smile on her face, I smiled back at her. "I'm Lou Ellen, your head councillor."
"Hey." I said back, chocolate dripping into my eye. I wiped it off and licked my fingers.
"Dianna has been given a prophecy by Lord Zeus this morning to reclaim the Oracle of Delphi." Chiron announced and my smile fell, instantly the fire dimmed and changed to purple.
"She just got here!" Someone yelled. "She has no training!"
People started arguing about the quest, not even Chiron could calm them down. He nodded at Piper and I plugged my ears as she got up and yelled at them to be silent, charmspeaking them.
"We cannot argue with the will of Lord Zeus." Chiron announced.
"What's the prophecy?" A girl asked, she had curly red hair and green eyes, and for some reason her jeans were covered with marker doodles.
"Magic's daughter shall fight her past, In order to stop what rose at last, God's trapped in a scaly jail, Draining day by day without fail, Powers one shall lend, For the Healer's prison to end, Nature's choice leads to death, A trick that ends with a final breath."
Silence.
"So who else is going on the quest?" Someone asked, and suddenly everyone was talking, trying to figure it out.
Chiron couldn't get them to stop so I stood up, eventually everyone noticed me and waited for me to speak.
"Zeus already told me who to bring." I said.
"What do you mean he told you?" An Ares girl said. "The rules state you get to pick two companions."
"Really?" I said with a frown. "It wasn't like that last time."
"Last time?" The girl said. "What last time?"
"Clarisse!" Annabeth said.
"No Chase, we deserve to know if she's going on this quest." The Ares girl (Clarisse) said.
"I've been on a quest before." I said. "I was chosen by the old oracle."
"The mummy?" Clarisse scoffed.
"Mummy?" I said with a frown, turning to Chiron. "The Oracles a mummy? I thought the spirit passed onto different hosts."
"Hades cursed the last oracle when the last great prophecy came out." Nico explained. "The curse was just lifted and the new host is Rachel."
"Oh." I said, so that little girl I knew had to host the oracle for centuries. "That's a long time."
"How would you know?" Clarisse asked.
Schist, I needed to learn how to keep my mouth shut.
"You said it was a mummy, mummies are old." I said, improvising quickly. They're also very cranky and vicious but I kept that thought to myself.
"What was your quest?" A camper asked, I remembered him from the Titan War, Travis.
I scratched the back of my head. "It happened a while ago." I admitted. "No one really knew about it, and I guess we didn't really succeed but we didn't fail either. It was fated that way I guess, we couldn't stop what happened but at the same time, we made sure there was something to stop it."
"How long have you known you're a demi-god?" An Athena camper asked with a slight frown.
I looked at Nico and he shrugged as if to say why not. "Since I was 14." I said, doing the mental math in my head. "So about . . . sixty years? Seventy? Almost seventy years."
Silence.
My heart pounded in my chest as everyone stared at me. Oh god, what was I going to do? What would they say?
"Were you a hunter of Artemis?" A camper asked.
"More like what they hunted." I muttered under my breath and Leo snorted, Calypso smacked him.
It would be a good cover story and believable but no, I had to be honest. I shook my head and campers threw out suggestions.
"Lotus Casino?"
"Minor God?"
"Golden statue?"
"One of Khoine's statues?"
I looked at Percy and Annabeth. "You gotta tell them." Annabeth said softly. I sighed, wiping my hands on my jeans. I hoped no one had a silver weapon.
I reached up and popped my contacts off and the talking stopped immediately. "Got bit by a Lycanthrope." I said. "I was present when the first Great Prophecy was spoken by the oracle, had some friends that were big three kids, I think you can guess what happened to them." I said and no one spoke for a minute.
"I remember you now." Travis said, piping up from under his banner. "I fought with you in the Titan War!"
I smiled and Chiron frowned. "You were there?"
"Yeah." Nico said, answering for me. "I fought with her as well. She even fought Kronos."
"How did you survive?" Percy asked.
"Steel and celestial bronze don't hurt Lycanthropes." I said with a grin. "If he hadn't had the curse of Achilles then I might have been able to really hurt him, maybe even kill. But the prophecy wasn't about me, it was about you."
"And now you have another prophecy, how do you feel?" Percy asked.
I sighed. "Annoyed." I said, and Travis snorted. "I don't care if it was the king of the gods that gave me it, I don't want to do it. I said seventy years ago that if they needed me to help save the world then they could forget it, but the god – or one of the gods – that are trapped is Asclepius, and if anyone can cure me it's him. That is the only reason I agreed to this."
More silence, I'm really getting sick of silence.
"Anyway, which one of you is Zach Dawson?" I asked.
"Me." A guy said and I had to turn around. He had long shaggy brown hair, a few strands hanging into his brown eyes, he was well muscled from working in the forges yet pale as if he spent his time indoors, he looked nervous. He must know he was chosen, he seems smart.
"Zeus chose you but it's your choice. Do you want to come on a quest with me? Take your time, it's a big choice." I said, I took a deep breath. "And Hailey. You were chosen as well."
Hailey stared at me, wide-eyed. "Think about it carefully." I said. "One of us will die, a trick that ends with a final breath, hopefully it'll be me since I'll come back eventually but well . . . be prepared."
"I have to go." She whispered. "It says so, Nature's choice leads to death. It's going to be my fault when one of you die."
"We won't know until it happens." I said. "Trust me, I'm not feeling too great about this jail thing."
Chiron was the only one who understood because he was the only one who had been there for my warning. Annabeth misinterpreted it.
"Healer's prison . . . hmm . . ."
"When do we leave?" Zach asked.
"First we need to find a way to the ancient lands, pack and prepare, research Python and the oracle, and get some silver weapons because there's no way in Hades I'm leaving without some way to kill Lycanthropes." I said, checking each item off on my finger.
"Aren't you a Lycanthrope?" Travis asked. "What happens if you stab yourself?"
"Then I deserved what I got." I said. "The only way I can try to stop them is by going full wolf mode, which is not something I want to do with two demigod's around."
"Why not?"
I shuffled my foot and looked at the ground. "It's harder to control . . . certain urges . . . when I'm like that."
It took a while for people to process that. Thankfully no one said anything about it, I sat down and we finished the campfire, I put my contacts back on and I spent the night in the Hecate cabin (after I cleaned up).
I wasn't looking forward to this quest.
Little bit of a dull chapter of course, technically a filler but in my filler chapters I like to drop little hints at what's to come so they're not completely useless. :) So look out for those, and if your not Dude you can skip this next bit if you like.
Since you're a guest I can't PM you so I'll just talk about your reviews here. Thanks for the compliment and the suggestion. I wasn't planning on making her totally at peace yet, just at peace with the idea if you know what I mean, there are going to be some bumps and drama on the quest but I'll add in some more, the insecurity is a great idea that I didn't explore to much, but I think it's a great idea. Also, I don't think I'm gonna add an old Harry, it just doesn't fit with the way I'm writing the story, so sorry about that but don't worry, I've thought of another way to (as you put it) violently dig up her past. :)
