Jasper followed me out of the classroom, looking both amused and worried.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
I furrowed my eyebrows. "He has been listening to my thoughts. Edward can read minds. What has he seen? God I hope that–" I mumbled to myself.
"Grace, he can only know what you think at the moment, okay? He won't know all your secrets unless you think them while he is near." Jasper said, trying to reassure me.
"Can any of you also do that?" I asked him. My eyes were wide with horror as the idea that Jasper could hear my thought, yet a wave of calm came over me.
"I think we better speak of it in a less public place. You said we had to talk, right? So we can discuss this later. Lunch?" Jasper said. I nodded. "Lunch." I agreed.
"No one but him has mind reading skills, but me and," he paused for a moment before continuing, "Alice also have powers. I can control people's emotions, while she can see the future."
That explains a lot, I thought.
"I'll see you later, we have to talk more about than just... Your family." I said. We went our separate ways, me towards Spanish class and him to Gym class. I sat with Bella and Jessica again. Sadly Angela was not in that class. I took my notebook out and continued working on my sketch until the teacher started talking. The class was incredible boring, I did not pay one ounce of attention to anything but the clock, who ticked so slowly it seemed to be teasing me.
The bell rang and I was getting up before people had their stuff ready to go. With a "adios", I left the classroom and walked into the hallway, trying to spot a familiar honey blond hair. I kept walking, figuring out he would have to find me. I walked out of the school door, only to be faced with Jasper. I gave him a smile, he tried to do the same but it looked like a grimace. His eyes were worried, looking at me as if he was trying not to scare me.
"Shall we?" I asked, motioning to the woods. He nodded and put his hands in his pockets. Amazing how vampires could make such human gestures naturally, subconsciously helping to put up their facade.
As we went deeper into the forest, I couldn't help but keep my eyes on him. He was so... mesmerising. We both stopped walking, in a silent understandment we were far enough away to not have any eavesdroppers listening to our conversation. Being alone with him got me nervous.
"Would you like to start or should I?" Jasper asked. So polite, a gentleman. "I think you'd better start." I replied. He took a deep breath, as if he needed it.
"Some vampires have special skills, powers, if you may," He said. "I can feel and manipulate emotions, Edward can read minds, Alice can read the future." I tried not to wince at the sound of her name. Out of politeness he did not call me upon it.
"We do not know why, but Carlisle has a theory that a human's most dominant trait is enhanced when they turn into a vampire. I was persuasive and charismatic as a human, it helped me become the youngest major of the Cavalry. I am guessing Edward was already good at reading people, and Alice probably had some sort of premonition.
"I didn't have quite the same upbringing than my adoptive siblings. While they were turned by Carlisle and then taught how to have a... vegetarian diet, I was turned by a human-drinker vampire. Her name was Maria. I didn't know there was another way. All I knew was wars for hunting territory, building vampire armies, and killing. I killed so many..." Jasper said, regret written all over his face.
I started to put my hand on his arm as if to comfort him, but stopped it in midair and then pulled it back. "What's going on between Edward and Bella?" I asked. "How can he stand it?"
"I don't know." Jasper said. "I honestly don't know. She is his singer. Her blood draws him in like no other can. I do not know how he can be that close to her and not–" He stopped. His eyes had turned black, and he was breathing quickly through his nose. I took a few steps back in the direction we had come from. I was sure he could feel my fear radiating from my body.
He closed his eyes, and when he reopened them moments later they were back to their golden colour. "I'm sorry." Jasper said. "I'm fine. I won't hurt you, Grace. I promise."
I nodded, silent. My fear faded somewhat away, like as if a speaker were being played as loud as it could go and then the volume was turned down to a low, background music volume.
He is dangerous. I told myself, as if it were not obvious. It had only now sunk in how this man disguised as an angel could kill me easily. One movement, one so fast I couldn't see, could end my life before I realised what had happened.
"Grace, I know this sounds insane, but I don't... thirst for your blood. This has never happened before. At least, not that I know of. You are the one human I can surround myself by without fear of losing control to my vampire instincts. I can do this." Jasper said, hand resting on my neck right over my carotid artery, which pulsed with every heartbeat.
I was surprised. I knew that the Connection varied on every partnership, yet this was unheard of. Will and... her could share emotions and had some telepathic properties. That was why they were always so in tune, so knowing of each other's distress and worries.
Jasper had said all he had to say. It was my turn now.
"I am a witch." I told him. "That was why such weird things happened, such as me hearing your conversation in class, my knowledge and ability to see you were vampires, why there were wards in my house."
"That's not all. There is this thing called a Connection between a witch and a vampire. It is sort of how shape shifters imprint, only not really. It is different for every couple, though the relationship almost always becomes romantic. There were a few cases it didn't happen, but it is extremely rare. Jasper, I think– I mean, I am certain we have a Connection."
I had explained to him all I knew about it, and then we went back to the school.
There was no time for lunch, so I just decided to walk to my next class. Biology. Jasper walked with me. When we reached the classroom, I stopped and turned to him. "Jazz, who is Alice?" I asked him. He gave me a confused look. "I mean, how are you related? Is she your sister, just a coven member, who is she to you?" I cleared up.
He looked uncomfortable. "Alice and I are mates. I mean, I'm not sure anymore… But that's what we were, at least."
Oh. That was all I could think for a moment. I faked a smile, trying to convey happiness and tranquility. "Okay, see ya!" I said cheerfully as I entered the classroom.
He and Alice are mates, my brain told me. No shit, Sherlock, I answered. I mean, now it made sense that she was so hateful towards me. She knew we had a Connection. I sat down and put my head down on the desk. The bell rang, signalling a torrent of students were going to gush in the class soon.
I'm so sorry for taking this long to update. It's short, I know, but it's what I have. Thank you all for bearing with me and reading this far, I know my writing in the beginning wasn't really good (I doubt it is now, but I digress).
