Sorry for the delay, I've been ill for a while and it took longer for me to write for some reason, I think it might be the homework again! Thanks to Lisa for your help :3
"I think we went a little overboard on the decorations..." Sam smirked as she attempted to attach the tangled up Christmas lights around the wooden door frame. The other week when they had gone shopping they raked every shop until they found the perfect set of decorations and spent hours figuring out which tree to get, a real or a fake one. They had decided to buy a real one to make it look more authentic and because it would be their first Christmas they spent together. Tom stopped what he was doing and turned around and pulled a shocked face.
"You can never go overboard Sam!" Tom laughed childishly as he continued to adjust the lights on the tree.
"Just because you're the perfect definition of a big kid.." Sam giggled as the door was too high up and she couldn't reach. "Tom come and give me a hand..." Sam whined folding her arms like a child.
Tom stopped faffing around with the tree and stood up and looked at her. He couldn't help but laugh at her. She looked so innocent and child like he just couldn't keep a straight face. "What you are like? You short arse." He smirked and went over to her. He took the lights and started to attach them to the door frame. "See? This is how its done..." He joked, laughing slightly.
"Well I'm only having difficulties doing things because I'm carrying extra weight." Sam teased as she stood back and watched him. "And just because you're such a gentle giant!"
"Hmm I did wonder why you're stomach is awfully bigger than normal. We will have to watch how much turkey you eat this year. Otherwise we'll have to sign you up to weight watchers." He chanced his luck but was met with Sam hitting his arm playfully.
"No you idiot!" Sam stifled a laugh as she then poked his side. "Have you forgotten that I'm carrying your child!" Sam exclaimed dramatically.
"Oh yes." He nodded. "I forgot about that. I just thought you'd ate all the pies and doritos..."
"I think you'll find you're the one eating the pies. Look at that belly!" Sam joked poking his stomach which Tom winced and pretended it hurt.
"I'll have you know that its insulation for the winter.." Tom countered.
"Insulation? Don't make me laugh you know fine well you could cut down on the pies.." Sam patted his belly once again.
"Its very cold outside you know, it is December Sammy.." He smirked.
"Hopefully it starts to snow soon..." Sam said as she went over to the sofa and put her feet up. "Crack on, I want these decorations up.." She said relaxing into the sofa. Tom raised both eyebrows and folded his arms, tapping his foot on the ground slightly.
"Oh really?" He asked, trying to be serious with her. "Is that right?"
"Yes, chop chop!" Sam said clapping her hands twice.
"Yes m'am!" Tom said as he stood up straight and saluted Sam.
"That's Major to you soldier.." Sam replied as she got up and made her way over to him. She wrapped her arms loosely round his neck and she went to kiss him. "I love you..." They shared a tender kiss before both of them pulled back in unison.
"I know..." Tom whispered, stroking her cheek gently.
"Say it..." Sam whispered in reply, smirking.
"I love you too..." He spoke tenderly, marvelling at the happiness he was feeling.
"Santa will definitely know where we are with the amount of lights I've put up…" Sam smirked slightly.
"That you've put up? I beg your pardon?" Sam was so feisty, and he loved it. Sam let out a small laugh as she cuddled into his strong arms before relaxing into his embrace.
"Come on Tom, we need to have picked out baby furniture by the end of today...and so far we've only got a few baby grows..." Sam said and she placed her hand on her growing bump as she watched him. That morning she had a sudden burst of energy and she knew they needed to buy baby things anyway, and now was the perfect time to do so. She wasn't a big fan of walking around the shops for hours on end but this, this needed to be done. This baby was special and she wanted to be organised.
Tom was in a trance. He was surrounded by little baby grows, little suits and shoes. He had a huge grin on his face. "All of this stuff is just so...so.." He tried to think of the right word.
"Expensive?" Sam chirped in, smirking.
"No...well, yes. But its all so adorable..." He said before the couple were approached by a shop assistant.
"Can I help you with anything in particular?" She asked cheerfully.
"Well, me and Tom, we're not really used to this..."
"Oh I see, is this your first child then?" Both Sam and Tom nodded in unison, and Tom put his arm round Sam's shoulders. They both smiled at the shop assistant and watched as she took them around and started explaining about budget items or if they could afford it, more expensive baby items. To both Sam and Tom's horror, they were shocked at the prices.
"Our daughter is expensive isn't she?" Tom whispered in Sam's ear, smirking slightly and Sam couldn't agree more.
"Come on, hurry up and pick something, otherwise, we are going to be later for our shift later on.."
His shift had gone horribly wrong. Pretty disastrous in fact. He had been suspended and he hadn't even told Sam. He was so scared to. He didn't want her to get angry or start worrying so much that something happened to the baby. Much to Sam's horror she had bumped into Linda who had heard about Tom's suspension and Sam went into total shock. She just couldn't believe that Tom would do such a thing. Her shift had also been a horrible one, especially because her patient was pregnant and was afraid of her own husband. She knew Tom wasn't violent but there was some obvious history between him and Dominic but she never once mentioned it in case it annoyed Tom. She didn't want a row but she needed to sort this out, now.
"Dominic?" Sam asked as she tapped him on the shoulder slightly. Dom stopped flirting with Linda and turned around slowly. When he noticed Sam he rolled his eyes before he folded his arms.
"Yes Dr Nicholls?"
"Just Sam is fine...listen, what were you and Tom arguing about?" She asked sheepishly, trying not to look him in the eye.
"Now is that any of your business?" He replied, almost as if he were talking to a five year old child who didn't understand.
"It has everything to do with me, Tom is my partner..." Sam replied, firmly so he knew she meant it.
"Oh?! So he's the father of the baby?" He asked mellow dramatically.
"Yes, who else would it be?" Sam asked, clearly confused.
"Well who knows? It could be any ones..." He retorted as he walked past her.
Sam grabbed his shoulder and turned him around. "What is that meant to mean?" She asked, clearly stung by the comment.
"Well, a gorgeous young woman like you, you're bound to have been with many men in your life..." He chirped ferociously at her.
"You know nothing about me at all! Don't you dare imply anything!" Sam snapped as she placed her hand protectively over her stomach. A few colleagues started listening in and stood and watched as the arguing increased.
"I know enough to know what you did to your ex husband!" He said before Sam lifted her hand as if to slap him.
"Enough!"
Both Sam and Dominic turned their heads and saw Zoe standing there, her face in complete shock, her eyes widened. "I'll see you at the end of your shift Sam, with Tom..." She called over to her but Sam didn't listen. She turned around and walked towards the ED doors. She needed to speak to Tom. Now.
He was sat, all alone on the bench outside the department, shivering as the cold wind blew. He wrapped his arms around himself and dug his nails into his arms, trying to get rid of the angry feeling he had in his body. He couldn't be violent in front of Sam.
"Tom?" Sam spoke tentatively as she sat down next to him. No one dared to speak for a while until Sam finally spoke. "I know what happened."
Tom looked over to Sam and he let his arms drop to his sides and he hung his head in shame. "I'm sorry Sam..."
"Hey..." Sam wrapped her arm around Tom's shoulders and she kissed his cheek gently. "I'm proud of you, you stuck up for yourself...even if you did get suspended."
"You're only saying that cause you're my partner.." Tom stated as he shrugged his shoulders.
"I'm not...I mean it.." She said as Tom pulled Sam in for a proper hug and he let his shoulder fall onto her shoulder. "I spoke to Dominic...I got myself in trouble.." She whispered after a few moments of silence.
"W..what?" Tom pulled back and frowned. "What did you say?"
"I asked why you were arguing and he treated me like a child. He.." She looked down to her lap and she noticed Tom's larger hands take hers in his own.
"He what Sam?" He asked, gently but firmly at the same time.
"He basically implied that I was a slut...he said he was surprised I knew who the father of the baby was." She hesitated for a moment as she could see Tom was getting angry. "But I told him straight. I said you don't know me enough to say anything about me. I went to slap him and Zoe caught me..." She smirked slightly but Tom wasn't finding this funny.
"Where is that coward?" He stood up in a hurry and started to head back to the hospital.
"No Tom! Tom!" Sam shouted as she tried to run after him but couldn't. "Please Tom!" She picked up the pace and jogged into the ED after him.
"Now you know why I've called both of you here?" Zoe's stern voice went right through Sam. She knew that Zoe was only following procedure to try and get this whole situation sorted but Sam knew that she had to tell Zoe to let Dominic go. He was causing too much trouble and he was jeopardising Tom's career. Sam moved her hand took Tom's hand, almost in aid to comfort him and reassure him everything would be okay. It took a lot out of her to stop Tom from physically hurting Dominic anymore after she revealed what she had told Tom about how rude Dominic was towards her. Sam had to literally drag him off to the staffroom to calm him down.
"Yes…we both do understand." Sam answered Zoe, giving Tom's hand a gentle squeeze.
"You know I could easily suspend you both for what you've done today? But I'm willing to forget about it if you both get you're acts together…"
"Me and Tom get our acts together? What about Dominic?"
"What about him? I don't see what he's done wrong. I know you and Tom are very much in love and you would do anything to protect each other…"
"I'll have you know Zoe, I went to slap Dominic. Not because I was protecting Tom, but because I was protecting myself from anymore verbal abuse from him."
"Verbal abuse? Sam?"
"He made me feel very uncomfortable…"
She explained everything to Zoe and afterwards Zoe placed her head in her hands.
"Bloody hell…" She muttered quietly. "I think you both need to go home, relax and come back tomorrow ready for action. I'll have a word with Dominic, what he has done to you Sam is against hospital policy, but then again, what Tom did today was out of order as well. Maybe I shouldn't have asked him to stay."
"No. You shouldn't have. I told you he was bad news Zoe.." Tom spoke in a gentle tone before he let off a sigh.
"Yes well as I've said, both of you need to go home. And Sam. Tomorrow, we'll discuss just when you will be going off for maternity leave." Zoe sat upright again and gestured for both Sam and Tom to leave the room. They slowly stood up and Tom wound his arm around Sam's back and both of them headed straight to the staffroom, perhaps thinking about the days events and possibly thinking about the things both of them had done wrong.
