INT. APPLIED SCIENCES, WAYNE TOWER - NIGHT

Wayne and Blake return to Wayne Tower to find an eager Lucius, who is ready to show off his new invention.

FOX

Back so soon?

WAYNE

Just checking to see how much of my money you spent on another one of my impractical requests.

FOX

(grinning)

You still have so little faith after all these years?

Fox walks with Wayne and Blake to the armory, types in a pass code, and walks into a small room filled with countless futuristic new gadgets.

WAYNE

You've been busy.

Lucius grabs a titanium two foot rod that is extremely lightweight. He tosses it to Blake and then presses a concealed button and the two ends immediately extend, creating a full length bo, a MENACING WEAPON. Blake looks at Wayne and grins, clearly impressed. Wayne smiles. Lucius then grabs a small thin titanium plate with two small 'c' shaped protrusions and holds it up for Blake and Wayne to see.

FOX

The bo comes standard with a bullet shield.

Fox then presses the button to retract the extensions and twists it in the middle separating the bo into two separate pieces. He takes one piece from Blake, snaps it into the 'c' clamps and hands it to Wayne. Wayne instinctively presses the only button on the plate and is shocked when the titanium plate expands to an oval-shaped shield as a fan of smaller plates extend quickly in a counter-clockwise motion.

FOX

This should do the trick against anything but heavy artillery.

WAYNE

And the armor we requested?

Fox smiles, and speaks as he walks toward a metal container.

FOX

With such an exorbitant request, I had to think out of the box on this one. As it turns out, the solution was quite unorthodox.

Fox presses a button and a metal drawer opens, revealing a sophisticated set of body armor. Fox picks up the chest armor.

FOX

Lightweight, flexible...

Fox turns around and tosses the armor to Wayne.

FOX

and extremely effective.

Wayne is surprised by its weight, but begins to bend it easily, too easily. He is skeptical.

WAYNE

How does it work?

Fox grabs the armor and begins walking into a testing lab.

FOX

The armor plates are made of ceradyne - boron carbide heated into ceramic plating, which is nearly as hard as diamonds and 70% lighter than steel. The lightweight fabric uses a technology called 'liquid armor' which is comprised of layers of Kevlar, treated with shear-thickening fluid.

Wayne and Blake look at him, perplexed. Fox smiles and enjoys the moment, finding satisfaction in their bewilderment.

WAYNE

Care to elaborate?

Fox approaches a thin piece of fabric, clearly an example of STF treated Kevlar.

FOX

The shear-thickening fluid or STF is a combination of silica nanoparticles suspended in polyethylene glycol. Under normal conditions, the particles in the fluid repel each other, floating easily through the liquid...

Fox picks up the fabric and demonstrates its flexibility.

FOX

but introduce the energy from an object, such as a bullet or a knife, and the sudden impact overpowers the repulsive forces of the particles, causing them to stick tightly together, forming hydroclusters.

Fox stabs the fabric violently with a thick, foot long needle, only to see the sharp tip break off. Wayne and Blake are clearly impressed.

FOX

After the energy from the impact dissipates, the particles again scatter, and the solid cluster reverts back to its liquid form. Thus, a few thin layers of STF-treated Kevlar can be used to replace the bulky and outdated armor you used to wear, Mr. Wayne.

WAYNE

Perhaps I could have prevented several of my more significant discomforts, had you developed your technology a little quicker.

FOX

That's what all that training was for... At no extra charge, I included a new feature. INVISIBILITY, well sort of. The entire suit is sprayed with a newly developed black latex paint which masks the body's heat signature, rendering the suit's occupant virtually imperceptible to thermal imaging cameras found on UAVs and infrared goggles.

WAYNE

You don't happen to have any more of that, do you?

FOX

I suppose I could spare an extra can or two. But I have one last thing to show you.

Fox walks with Blake and Wayne to another area where a large object is covered by a sheet.

FOX

You requested something with speed, mobility, and heavy armor.

Fox pulls of the sheet, revealing what resembles a motorcycle, only heavily armored and aerodynamically sophisticated - like a bullet on wheels.

FOX

The problem for the military when running reconnaissance missions is that the scout has to be invisible but is also required to travel long distances while highly vulnerable to attack. This baby was designed to take care of all three problems. It can reach speeds of up to 150 miles/hr in just a few seconds, turns on a dime, and runs at full throttle at an almost imperceptible 40 decibels.

WAYNE

How does it work?

FOX

(content)

The highly sophisticated on-board computer system uses adaptive algorithms to identify and invert the wavelengths of the different waveforms produced by the bike. Then, by creating new sound waves with the same amplitude but inverted phases, either compression or rarefaction phases, and using speakers to project them at the wavefronts of the unwanted noise, sound attenuation is achieved through destructive interference.

Wayne and Blake have a glazed look.

FOX

Haven't you ever heard of noise cancellation devices.

BLAKE

We'll take your word for it.

FOX

Additionally, the aerodynamical precision of the armor and the low profile significantly reduce the refractions of sound waves while also allowing for greater speeds and heightened maneuverability. In fact, the front of the bike mimics the beak of the peregrine falcon, the fastest bird on Earth.

BLAKE

(impressed)

We'll take it!

FOX

I thought you might.

Fox grins, clearly satisfied with himself.

INT. BATCAVE - NIGHT

Blake sits and stares at his completed armor with an unmatched intensity. He is absorbing the weight of the final moments before his transformation into Nightwing is nearly complete. He stands, dons his armor, and races off on the Nightbike.

EXT. GOTHAM CITY - NIGHT

Blake waits patiently among the rooftops.

EXT. GOTHAM CITY - CONTINUOUS

Blake hears some chatter from his earpiece, which is set to the police blotter frequency, something about a silent alarm being triggered. He notes the location, then leaps of the building. Moments before he hits the ground, he deploys his cape and lands safely next to the Nightbike, which he quickly mounts and speeds off. Blake weaves through traffic at impossible speeds, turning through alleys, and side streets. The presence of the Nightbike is barely noticed. A BLUR.

He arrives at his destination and is ejected out of the bike, vaulting high into the air, flying through the glass like a bullet, and landing among a crowd of Penguin's thugs, who are in the midst of robbing another jewelry store. He rolls and rises. The thugs are shocked, motionless. TERRIFIED. Blake pulls out his bo, which extends immediately, revealing his deadly weapon. Blake begins taking out the thugs one and two at a time until all lie motionless on the ground. Sirens are heard in the background. Blake vanishes as the police approach the broken glass of the jewelry store to the sound of a roaring motorcycle speeding off.
