A Whole New World
Rest and Confusion
/First, let me just say that I am a big fat liar. I know I said I would have a chapter up for you guys a week after I posted the last one but I have had some family issues lately. My mom, dad, brother and sister went to Michigan for a week to help my grandma with my grandpa. Two and a half weeks later, my mom had to go back up there to help her again by herself to help. My mom and I are close and its been hard not seeing her cause I haven't been away from her like this before and she isn't coming back until the beginning of May. Second, I just want you guys to that I really do appreciate all of you who follow and favorite my story. It really means a lot to me, especially cause this is all I have in life that's going for me right now. Anywho, I hope you guys like this chapter and if you do review and maybe share with your friends :) Enjoy!
Ms. Manami
No.
No no.
Oh yea, no!
This was not how it was supposed to be! Here she was, laying on one of Kagome sleeping bags, ready for bed and yet she couldn't fall asleep. Everyone else had gone to sleep hours ago, but she still had no luck. You would think after a long day of attempting to fish and then playing with the children, she would fall asleep right away. But luck was not on her side tonight.
She had thought about going for a walk, hoping it would help. Or maybe even going down to the stream to swim. Unfortunately, she didn't want to walk alone at night and she didn't have a bathing suit to swim in.
Walking alone wouldn't have worried her. Not in the slightest, but ever since he decided he was going to sneak up on her and scare her, she didn't think it'd be a good idea to do it again. Especially since I don't have powers like Kagome and the others. If a demon were to come up on me and I didn't know them, I'd be screwed.
Sighing, she turned and faced the fire that was nothing but a dim light now.
Across from said fire, was a pair of amber like eyes watching her. These two so very different from the pair she had seen over the last two days. This pair watched her in a curious way, wondering something even she didn't know.
Why he watched her, he didn't know. There was something very strange about her and he didn't like it. He didn't like the fact that she seemed very comfortable around his older half-brother. Aside from the little human girl, he had never seen anyone act that way around him and he didn't understand it at all. He was cold, cruel and hated anyone that was below him. So why? Why did they find comfort in him? Or was it just his imagination?
"Can I ask why you are looking at me?" she asked, bringing him out of his thoughts.
His only reply to her was "Keh", as he turned his back to her.
She growled to herself and mumbled something about a 'stupid mutt' before she returned her attention back to the fire.
Fire. Something she always found comfort in, besides the water. Any time she was angry or upset she found herself seeking solace in staring at a fire. She thought it was pretty cool that the fire would flicker in different directions when she was extremely upset, making it seem like it was trying to comfort her.
The water was a different story. Anytime she was either swimming or enjoying the waves at the beach, she felt calm. Like nothing could ever hurt her. The sound of the waves as they crashed on the beach was hypnotizing. The way they moved was beautiful, but even more so on a full moon.
She sighed again as her mood turned sour. Thinking of the beach waves had made her sad, seeing as she had not been in a while. And there's no telling when I'll be able to go again. Not with what's going on right now.
As she tried once again to get some sleep, she felt another person staring at her. This person however was not the same annoying one she had questioned just a few minutes ago, but a quiet and curious youkai. One she didn't think she would ever catch staring.
Sesshomaru.
Something had been bothering him lately, and he didn't like it. There was most certainly something about this human that seemed very strange, but he couldn't exactly reason why.
She looked like every normal human, yet her eyes were unlike any he had ever seen. She didn't smell like the average human either, something that he concluded was because she wasn't from this time.
Respect was another thing about her. She was respectful towards him, his ward and the other humans. His half-brothers wench was never respectful towards him, then again humans rarely ever respected him. They just feared him because of who he is and the power he holds.
The biggest thing that was currently bothering him was her scent. Unlike her content, which held a sweetness to it, this brought about something sour.
The sourness in her scent did not match the look on her face. She looked as though she was upset or even aggravated. His nose told him she was angry, but his eyes told him something different.
He knew she had been previously trying to get some sleep before they left tomorrow, but it seemed she couldn't. The hanyou staring at her didn't seem to help the matter either.
Once he had left her alone, she had tried again. As his luck would have it, before she could even close her eyes, she had noticed he had been staring as well.
Obviously seeing that she would get no sleep tonight, she stood up and marched out of camp and down to the river.
Sesshomaru watched her walk out of camp and heard her mumble something about 'stupid inu youkai' as she passed by him.
He could care less about her and her well being but she had once again walked out and away from a weapon to help protect herself. He had also promised to help her with her issue and he wasn't one to go back on his word.
So he effortlessly stood and followed after her. He knew the hanyou was still awake and if anything terrible happened, he would be able to get there quickly if need be as he would not be far. It wasn't even a question as to where she had gone. The last time she had stalked off, he found her by the river and there was a very good chance he would find her there again.
She knew he followed her and she was pretty sure she knew why. Though she couldn't understand why. She wasn't going very far and she certainly didn't need a body guard.
Yuriko sighed to herself as she reached the edge of the water. Sitting down, she once again pulled off her shoes and her socks, sticking her feet in when she was done.
She could feel him come up behind her as she began kicking her feet softly in the water.
"Can I help you with something Sesshomaru?" she asked.
He looked at her and said nothing as he sat near her. He did think for a moment though. Could she help him? He was trying his best to help her, maybe she would feel indebted to him. Perhaps he could get her to care for Rin while she was with them, seeing as she had no problem doing it anyways.
"I would like for you to do me a favor as well. Since I am helping you, you will help me. I want you to take care of Rin."
She blinked. What? He doesn't really expect me to stay here until she's old enough to care for herself, does he? I have school, mom and Nanami! I have a life!
"Uh.." she started. She wasn't exactly sure how to say it without it coming off as her being ungrateful for his help. "I do appreciate your help, really I do, but I can't stay here until Rin is old enough to care for herself. I have school, my mom and my sister. She seems to be a really good kid but I can't throw away my life to stay here for a few years." she finished carefully.
"I do not expect you leave your life behind. Caring for her would only be when you are here and I cannot watch her."
"Oh." Now she felt stupid. She should've asked him to explain more first. "I would love to then, if you still want me too. I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions when I shouldn't have."
He nodded his head to her. Now that he had someone to watch over her, he could attend to more of the dangerous things he had to deal with and not worry so much over her safety.
They sat in silence for a while, enjoying the quietness of the night and the calmness of the water. Sesshomaru glanced over at the young girl and saw just how tired she was. It was amazing really. This little human had dealt with a lot these last few days. Yes she had slept, but when she did, he watched her toss and turn for hours. When she finally settled down, she woke nearly two hours after.
The tired look in her eyes was not there when she was awake and it wasn't there when she went to bed either. How could it just now show when this had been a recurring thing for her? Her first night of unrest should of shown itself the very next morning, not days after.
She knew he was staring at her again, this time she knew why. She herself felt her lack of sleep finally hit her but she didn't know that he would notice. Of course he would, he's a youkai. They seem to notice everything.
"You should return to camp and sleep." he said. He thought it wouldn't do if she was tired in the morning but she had seemed to do fine without it before. Still, it wasn't healthy for a human.
"I would, but the ground isn't as comfortable as one might think." she chuckled and then sighed. "Besides, it's hard to sleep when there is a lot going on."
He could agree with that. The ground was never comfortable, no matter where you were, so he had taken to resting against his fur anytime he slept. Having troubles and trying to sleep is a different matter and he agreed that it did make it harder.
He turned from her and said, "It is best to try. If you don't you will most likely worry Rin." She looked at him. There was something strange about the way he said it. It wasn't the tone he used, it was what shone in his eyes. I can't put it as worry for me cause he hasn't know me long. Though from what Kagome and the others have told me, he seems to be the complete opposite. Maybe its just worry for Rin, which definitely makes more sense. Or maybe he's worried about seeing his mother tomorrow?
Shaking her head at her thoughts, she said to him, "You're right. Tomorrow is going to be a long day and I wouldn't want to slow anyone down just so I could keep up."
He looked at her once more. "There is always Ah-Un if you tire."
"Oh." She hadn't thought of that. "I promise to try and sleep again, so long as you come back to camp with me."
She froze. She didn't know why she said that. There was no reason for her to, especially since he could do whatever he pleased. She in no way had control over what he did or when he did it, and yet here she was almost demanding he come back with her.
He could smell the fear and shock coming from her. The shock he could understand, but the fear he did not. She never once let fear come over here so why now? Perhaps she is afraid for how I might act.
Sesshomaru stood from his resting spot and walked the little distance to her. He then leaned down towards her ear and whispered, "Let us leave now then before there is no time for you to sleep." He smirked as he straightened back up and saw the surprise on her face.
Surprise came over her as she was not yelled at like she had kind of expected to be. He did nothing like she thought he would and it was strange since he didn't look the type to take orders from anyone, let alone a human. She hurried after him as he started walking back.
When they reached camp, Yuriko walked over to her previous sleeping spot, fixed her makeshift bed a little and laid down. As she made herself comfortable she noticed that Sesshomaru had not sat in usual spot, but next to her.
Gold met honey as she looked at him, confused. He said nothing to her as he turned his gaze towards the now burning embers of the campfire.
Knowing she wouldn't actually get an answer, Yuriko let out a big yawn as she closed her eyes and mumbled out, "G'night Maru."
What she did not see was his gaze returning to her, a look of great confusion and curiosity. He watched her breath even out as she fell asleep. Even after he continued to watch her, his only thought being, No one has called me that since she disappeared.
