Chapter ten: The new Boleyn girl
The seventh of September 1536, Jane Seymour became Jane Boleyn, under the eye of God and of the english court. When George saw her entering the church, he felt his heart beting faster than ever. She looked like an angel in her ivory dress. Around her neck, the man could see the golden cross he offered her months ago. Her blond hair was tied into a bun in which she added a few fresh flowers. She was led to the altar by her father, who looked proud and happy for his beloved girl.
After a few minutes, George was finally able to offer Jane her wedding ring.
' With this ring, I thee wed. I, George Boleyn, take you, Jane Seymour, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. '
' I, Jane Seymour, take you, George Boleyn, to be my lawfuly wedded husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life. '
The priest then said aloud:
"You have declared your consent before the Church. May the Lord in his goodness strengthen your consent and fill you both with his blessings. What God has joined, men must not divide. Amen."
From her seat, Anne looked at her brother, she had never seen him so happy. He was finally in peace with himself and with his past. A few weeks before the ceremony, his former wife and newly aunt, Jane Howard, née Parker, sent him a letter in which she apologized for her behaviour, admitting her mistakes and wishing him all the happiness possible in his new marriage. A new and so hoped motherhood had changed the woman. She was happy with her new husband, her stepchildren and had found herself with child.
' What your former wife has done is very brave. ' George's fiancée told him when he explained the story to her
Holding no grudge against her, he even thought of inviting her to the ceremony, with the bride-to-be's approval. Alas, being five months along and having a tiring pregnancy, Jane could not attend. But she did sent a present to the new Rochfords. And especially for the occasion, Henry allowed Thomas Boleyn to attend his son's wedding. For the all court, it was a sign of mercy. For Henry, it was a punishment. He wanted his father-in-law to see what he had lost:
- A happy son, very much in love with his wife who was a sweet young woman.
- A daughter, who married a commoner but was a delight for her siblings.
- Grandsons and granddaughters he would never see.
- A daughter, who was his queen, carrying a royal child once again when he thought her to be barren and therefore useless.
But above all, Thomas lost a wife who loved him. She had now nothing but disgust in her heart for the one who fathered her children. Yes, Henry had Thomas allowed to attend the ceremony, so that he could see a happy family, in which he did not have a place anymore. Anne was his daughter but she was his queen first. And a queen's flesh was sacred. Thomas shut himself out of the Tudor-Boleyn clan by his plots and threats.
The wedding was followed by a feast, as lavish as the royal wedding's feast. The new couple received many gifts. Jane found a small box offered by Anne.
' Many thanks, Your Majesty. ' The new Lady Rochford said, bowing to her sovereign.
' No, just Sister, Jane. We are sisters now. ' The raven haired woman replied with a smile
When Jane opened it, she found a necklace. Anne's maiden necklace, made of pearls with the B pendant.
' It belongs on a Boleyn lady... ' She managed to say
' And you are one, Jane. '
The bride felt a warmness in her body. She was accepted by her family-in-law.
Around midnight, George and Jane were finally alone in their bedroom. Jane could not help feeling anxious about her wedding night. It would be her very first time and she was afraid. She did not fear the pain, she feared that George would not find her attractive, or think of her as a boring devout. As for George, he was determined to make his marriage work. He would not make the same mistakes twice. After kissing his wife's lips, he told her:
' If you aren't ready, I won't force you. '
' You deserve a proper wedding night... '
' As you deserve a proper first time. '
Jane kissed him back and slowly, heat started to rise in them. The union was consummated a few moments after. And they were far from knowing that a Boleyn child was put in a Seymour's womb on this very special night.
Life returned to its usual routine. The king took care of his kingdom and managed to have time for his family and hobbies. The queen was served and helped by her ladies, ruling over the court while expecting what she hoped to be a prince, even if her husband guaranted that he'd be happy with another princess.
' With your magnificent hair colour. ' He said
Mary and Elizabeth were the delight of the court. While entering her fifth month, Anne felt strangely in peace, something she hadn't felt in years. The last time she experienced it was when Elizabeth was in her. A voice within her kept telling her that everything was going to be okay, that she would be the most happy again, that she would know the joy of having a living healthy child again.
' No. Two healthy and living children. ' She thought
The new sounded like a miracle. A few days after her brother's wedding, the queen of England learnt that she was expecting twins.
' We can definitely feel two heads, Your Majesty. ' The physicians assured her
When she told Henry about it, he kissed her passionately.
' This is a gift from God! Twins! '
He kneeled and kissed her belly, before gently resting his head upon it.
' Be good with Mama. Papa already loves you. '
What made Anne feeling secure was also the fact that Henry kept the promise he made her when she announced him that she was with child again. He did not took a mistress. She knew how hard it was for him, who enjoyed the pleasure of the flesh, but she was really grateful and made him know how she loved him.
' Your Majesty? ' A voice called her, making her quiting her thoughts
' Sister. ' She corrected the voice
She turned her head to face Jane, who looked worried.
' I think I might be ill... I've never experienced it before... It frightens me. What if I can't please George anymore? '
With a gracious wave of the hand, Anne invited her sister-in-law to sit by her side. Her sister Mary soon joined them.
' What is it, sweet Jane? ' The Stafford lady asked her
' I think I am quite ill... It's been about two or three weeks now... I can barely eat and when I do, my stomach hurts and I can't keep what I swallowed... '
The nées Boleyn sisters looked at each other before sharing a smile.
' When was the last time your red flower bloomed? ' Mary inquired
Jane blushed, muttering that she did not have a precise date.
' I remember having it two weeks before my wedding though... '
' Do not fear Jane. You are not ill. You'll have to see a physician to be sure though. Your illness is called being with child. ' Anne explained with a small laugh
It took a few seconds to Jane to realize that she was carrying her husband's heir. Unconsciously, her hand went upon her still flat belly.
She was going to be a mother.
