Love & Lucky
Uncertainty
"Tell me exactly what happened, Miss Slovar," the officer commanded her. They were at the police station. He insisted on interrogating her once she recovered the capacity to understand what he was saying.
"I didn't see much. They appeared from nowhere and, as you saw, I wasn't in any condition to think straight at the moment," she replied. The man stared at her for a while, then lowered his gaze to write something down on a document she couldn't see.
"What were you doing at the scene of the crime?" he asked, making her wrinkle her nose at the wording choice.
"I live in the area. I went out to buy food." She made a pause and lowered her head. "I wanted to make tacos…" she murmured.
"Did you know any of the men there?"
"No."
"How many were they?"
"Four."
"Three of them are dead. What happened to the last one?"
"He ran away. You saw him too, didn't you?" She felt a bit irritated by all the questioning already.
The officer rubbed his forehead. He was a handsome man, Jessica noted. Light brown hair in a military cut, good chin… and his body didn't stay behind; muscular with big back and big hands.
"Please tell me what happened from the beginning," he asked tiredly.
She sighed inwardly. "I went out to buy meat and vegetables to prepare tacos, but on my way there three men appeared. I mean, I saw them. They were walking in my direction in the street, but they didn't catch my attention. I thought they were passersby like me."
"They stopped by my side and pulled out a knife trying to rob me. Then the fourth man appeared and started fighting them." She stopped her story for a while, the lies mixing with the reality of the images running through her mind.
"He killed the first one. The second one had a gun… He shot two times. One hit him, the other I don't know." She paused, her face contorting involuntarily as she remembered the man she called "Natsu" talking at that moment.
"You will regret that."
She covered her face, closing her eyes tightly. A few moments later, she felt a hand on her shoulder. The officer was looking at her when she pulled her head up. His eyes showed concern. She tried to relax and continued.
"I closed my eyes then. I heard a sound, then a scream and steps." She remembered what happened next. "Natsu" turning around and realizing she was there; his worried eyes and the fear she felt. She cooled her head and lied again. "When I opened my eyes the fourth man was the only one standing. He turned around and saw me. I think her wanted to rob me too, but I started crying before he said anything, I don't know. Then we heard you and he ran away."
The officer wasn't looking at her until she said the last phrase. He let go of the archive he was filling and put his hands together above it.
"Miss Slovar," he started. "I want to get something straight. I'm a police officer, I have interrogated a thousand people and I know when someone is lying to me. Even though your story holds some true, it isn't enough. Just so that we are clear, I know everything about you. I know where you work and I know a situation like the one that occurred today can often happen around people in your… profession."
The woman was shocked out of her words. Was he indirectly calling her a whore and implying she was a woman that will most likely have relationships with disgraceful men like those robbers? (She tried to forget about "Natsu" here).
Jessica stood up and took her bag. "Your intel isn't precise enough. You don't know a person from what it says about her in a file." Her eyes her cold, piercing into the man's soul like daggers. Then she turned around and left.
The police officer sighed and shook his head. Four men; three murdered, one fugitive and the only witness is a prostitute. Just his luck.
Jessica put down her fourth glass with a thud. With every passing drop she became angrier. She couldn't stop thinking about the man who had killed three men in front of her that day and, the more she fought the thoughts and lost, the angrier she turned.
Rima came up to her in the bar and took her empty glasses with a worried look.
"Jess, what's wrong, dear?" she asked.
"Nothing, Rima. Leave me alone," che replied annoyed. The older woman frowned and was about to take her leave when Jessica took her hand. "Sorry… It's been an awful day. I'm so confused…" she confessed with great effort.
Rima sat down beside her and took her hand in hers. "Why don't you tell me about it? It may help you," she said.
"It's too complicated… and it could get you in trouble…" Jessica replied putting a hand on her forehead as if her head weighted a lot.
Rima smiles a bit. "I wouldn't mind getting in trouble because of you, dear, but you could always tell me what's worrying you without including the context."
The blond hesitated for some seconds while thinking about this. Then she looked at the woman that was like a mother to her and resisted the urge to cry.
"I think… I fell in love," she whispered finally and Rima almost jumped out of her chair from the excitement.
"That's GREAT, Jessica!"
"No, wait, don't… It's not something to celebrate." Through the fingers that covered her face you could see her watery eyes and how much pain this was causing her. Rima remained silent. "He might be a bad person."
Rima blinked a few times at this declaration but then smiled and put a hand on Jessica's shoulder. "Dear, you say he might be a bad person, which means you haven't decided what you think of him yet. There must have been things that made you think he's good and things that made you think he's bad, but whatever you think of him in the end is entirely up to you."
The blond stared at the older woman for a while, her eyes widening as the simplicity of it all fell upon her. Then she hugged Rima, stood up and ran for the door.
"Wait Jessica, where are you going?!"
"I have to find him! He was injured! Bye, Rima, thank you!" the younger woman responded while going out of the door. The other one remained immobile for some seconds, goosebumps running down her spine.
"Injured…?" she murmured. Then she hid her face, trying to ignore the bad premonition clawing at her. "Oh, God, I wish I've done well. Jess, what kind of man did you meet…?
Alright! It's been a long while since I last updated this story so, TA-DAH! (Sorry…)
