Chapter 10
Wow. I am finally finishing this story. I found it in my google docs and realized I need to finish at least one story on this drive. Truthfully, I wrote this so long ago, I'm sure I had a lot more planned for this story, but I'm a terrible writer and don't have any plans written down. I hope this final update gives a nice feeling of completion.
Quin and Kitty burst into Glee classroom still linked in arms, laughing about the freshman boy who ran into a wall staring at their asses and dropped all his books to the ground. Kitty was nice enough to stop and help him pick them up, but the shy freshman couldn't find any words to greet Kitty with and instead blurted out, "I like your butt." And then darted away.
High school times were so simple, Quinn thought.
Rachel made eye contact with Quinn and she broke the link with Kitty to run over to give Rachel a quick peck on the cheek, forgetting all of the Glee club had already joined the room by now. There was an awkward, terrible silence.
Quinn didn't know what was wrong with her, she was usually so careful about the perceptions of others. Always examining the audience that was about to witness whatever stunt she about to pull off. Kissing Rachel Berry in front of all the people she once always tried to trick into thinking she was cooler than, was not something she had ever prepared for.
Rachel must have picked up on this feeling and in true Rachel fashion, she recovered the scene. "Hey Quinn," she smiled a little, still not fully being able to hide that Quinn Fabray had just kissed her in a room full of people she had always tried to impress. But she tried not to dwell and transition as best as possible, "You're just in time. We were about to start."
"Wait a second," Brittany said from the back, "Why did Quinn just kiss Rachel? Is that part of the dance? Can I kiss Mr. Schu?"
Finn entered just as Brittany finished. The recent event of rejection from Rachel sent him to the bathroom, where he was definitely not crying. "What'd I miss?" He asked, as he felt the silence in the room.
Puck came around and put his arm around his shoulder, "Nothing, man. Just about to start the final rehearsal before the pep rally. You know Rachel, always trying to surprise us at last minute." He threw a wink at Rachel and Quinn. In the time that Rachel had been gone, Puck had learned to care for the Glee club, and he knew the drama of Finn finding out that his two ex-girlfriends were now kissing was not the kind of preparation they needed to take this pep rally by storm.
"Yes," Rachel clasped her hands together, "Places everybody. Let's just start from the beginning and see how this goes. If I need to change anything, I'll let you know." Everybody moved to their designated spot and Mr. Schu started the music. Everything was a mess, just as Rachel had planned.
There was no turning back now and the only place left to go was out to the pep rally to perform. Rachel wasn't too caught up about it, she just wanted to make sure everybody was going to have fun and by the giggles of everybody in the rehearsal, she knew there was some sort of chemistry brewing.
As they were exiting the Glee room, Brittany pulled Quinn and Rachel away from the other members.
"No seriously, why did you kiss Rachel, Quinn," Brittany demanded to know, "Is there something going on?"
Rachel bit her lip and waited for Quinn to answer. She would have loved to tell Brittany all about their lesbian love affair, but it really wasn't her place. Quinn took a quick glance at Rachel and knew she couldn't lie to Brittany while Rachel was doing that thing with her lip that drove her crazy.
"We're dating, Brittany," Quinn finally let out.
"Oh," Brittany said, almost disappointed, "That's cool, I guess."
"You guess?" Quinn asked, confused.
Brittany shrugged, "Sure. I thought it was going to be something juicier."
"How does it get any juicier than this? I'm gay, Brittany! Your head Cheerio is a lesbian!" Quinn was practically shouting.
"Okay, and? Been there, done that. Not Rachel, specifically, don't worry. Scouts honor." She held up three fingers and bowed her head. "I gotta go. Pep-rally, you know." And she bounced off.
Quinn was still puzzled, "Why didn't she care?"
"You really expected Brittany to care?" Rachel raised her eyebrow.
"It's a big deal!" Quinn was starting to pout. Rachel laughed and couldn't resist. She draped her arms around her shoulders.
"You don't go to this school anymore. Not everything's about you anymore."
Quinn sighed and Rachel kissed her on the lips. Quinn tried her hardest to stay mad, but the temptation of Rachel's lips quickly made her forget that her coming out story wasn't going to be headlining news at Lima High.
Except maybe one person.
They broke lips once they heard the water bottle drop to the ground. Only to turn to see Finn standing with his mouth wide open.
"Wh...wha...how...why?" Were the only words he managed to get out.
"Finn…" Rachel started towards him, "Don't freak out."
Finn backed up and threw his arms up, "Don't freak out? A minute ago you were singing with me! And now you're kissing her?!"
"Finn, we already went over the duet. It was a fun song, that's it," Rachel tried to explain.
"How could you do this to me? Break up with me and then kiss a girl right in front of me!" He was basically yelling at this point.
"We were never together! What don't you get about that?" Rachel asked, losing her patience.
"You cheated on me, I bet," Finn declared.
"I never cheated! We were weren't together! I'm allowed to date other people!" Rachel grew defensive. Cheating was never something she would do.
"I can't believe you're doing this," Finn turned his back towards them and tried to reclaim himself. After a moment, he whipped back around and pointed at Quinn. "I always knew you were nasty, but to draw her into this is just sick. You're just going to go and make fun of her with Santana and Brittany later? Blackmail her to every acting gig in New York?" He turned to Rachel, "This is just a game for her! She doesn't care about you!"
Before Rachel could reply, Quinn's hand was already halfway across Finn's face with a slap that could probably be heard from the gym. Finn yelped in pain and held his face.
Quinn looked him dead in the eyes, "You have no idea what you're talking about, Hudson," and stormed away.
Rachel just shook her head in disgust at him and started to chase Quinn down. She had already wasted enough time trying to explain things to Finn. He was just a boy stuck living in his own fantasy.
The brunette found Quinn sniffling in a bathroom stall. She knocked on the door.
"Can I come in?" Rachel heard the latch being undone and she slowly opened the door to see a puffy faced Quinn.
"He's just a loser," Rachel hugged her.
"I'm not nasty," Quinn said through sniffles, "I wouldn't do anything like that to you."
"I know," she said, still not letting Quinn go. "These people don't know you anymore."
"And they never will. They're always going to just think I'm some bitchy head-cheerleader," she started crying harder.
Rachel pulled her face away and clasped her hands around Quinn's cheeks, "Listen to me, Quinn. It doesn't matter. None of this matters. I spent four years trying to get this school to understand that I wasn't just some Broadway nerd. It didn't work. But who cares? This," She gestured to the Cheerio Uniform Quinn hadn't taken off yet, "chapter of your life is over. You can't change that." Quinn blotted her eyes with some toilet paper.
"But this," she brought Quinn hand over her chest, remotely where her heart was, "is next. This is the next chapter. So, we can sit in this highly germ infected high school bathroom and cry about what a high school ex-boyfriend thinks of us. Or…" She trailed off, hesitant to say what was next.
"Or what?" Quinn asked in a squeak.
"Or you can move to New York."
Quinn chuckled through broken tears, "And dropout of school and move in with you? Rachel Berry, are you u-hauling on me?"
"Don't be mad but," Rachel paused, "I may have accidentally glanced at your phone while you had your e-mail open. I saw that acceptance e-mail from NYU."
"Oh," Quinn grew silent.
"Who's u-hauling now?" Rachel raised her eyebrow.
This broke Quinn into a full on smile and she gave Rachel a long kiss before finally saying, "Okay."
"Okay?"
"Okay, I'll move to New York," she answered. Rachel went in for another kiss.
Rachel started excitedly clapping like the Broadway Nerd she was and Quinn couldn't help but roll her eyes like the cheerleading bitch she was. You can grow a person far from their roots, but you should never forget the qualities that made you, you in the first place. It's what we tend to love about somebody.
The two girls were startled by a bang on the bathroom stalls, "Oi dios mio, hurry up!" It was none other than Santana, "We don't have time for an entire episode of The L Word. We're going on in five minutes!"
"Shit," Quinn mumbled under her breath and quickly unlatched the stall to open the door. "How much did you hear?"
"Welcome to New York," Santana cheekily grinned, "But I don't have time to tease you about all the lesbian sex that will happen. We have to go!"
"Who would have thought Satana would be the one pushing us around?" Rachel turned to Quinn has Santana dragged them out of the restroom.
The pep rally went accordingly. A disaster but full of heart. The audience had their phones out, surely recording the entire thing to post to any social media to make fun of the clan. But nobody seemed to care, singing with your best friends has a certain type of magic only a former Glee Member could explain.
Rachel and Quinn sang a romantic duet, which surely had a few perverted boys all hot and bothered. A gay duet was almost more than Lima High could handle. At the end of the song, Rachel and Quinn smiled at each other. Not wishing that this could have been their high school reality, but happy this school could still be apart of their story.
Rachel and Quinn were walking to Quinn's car holding hands when they heard Mr. Schu's voice chasing them down. "Hey! Hey!" They stopped to turn around.
"I needed to say thank you," he said, "That was really something. I think you really showed the new kids the kind of stuff we need for next year."
"Glad to help, William," Rachel said politely.
"I was actually wondering, you think you want to stop by some this summer? I'm doing some workshops and we could use the help," he asked.
Rachel and Quinn and turned to each other and just laughed.
"See you around, Will," Quinn said, grabbing Rachel's hand again, "We'll catch up again next Christmas."
Mr. Schu stood there lifeless as he watched the two get into the Volkswagen. He didn't know where they were going, but maybe that was for the better.
