(1) Thanatos: The death god who lives at the gate between the underworld and the world of the living. He is the one who 'claims' the dead, like the reaper.

Three horses and their riders saddled atop moved through the dense forest; the manor that had stood behind disappearing a while back. Headed in a single direction the young brave knight led the two warriors following closely behind.

Vita, obeying her lord's command, had been assigned to accompany and guide the two warriors in their travel east. Having partaking on many excursions she had been the best suited for the role- well versed with the roads more so than the other knights.

It had been some time since they had left the trail to go through the rich forest. Their progress had been steady, but all the while the pace was drawn-out for the young knight. The road would have been more apt and swifter for the horses without the trees to delay them.

"Are you sure you do not wish to ride on the road?" Vita asked for the last time. The young red-haired knight had voiced her opinion- quite a few times actually-of covering more ground on the path, yet the answer was always the same.

The blonde warrior had frowned upon the idea and again, Nanoha had to shake her head to the knight who angle her body around to face them for an answer.

With an annoyed sigh, Fate answered looking straight ahead. "You would do best to stop asking. We will keep to the woods as planned."

Vita bit back a complaint, her patience wearing just as thin. Just then their eyes briefly met and the look of complete ease, opposite from the blonde's harsh tone- had Vita questioning with a little bite in her tone. "This may seem all irrelevant to you, but I wish not to prolong this journey. The sooner I can get you to your destination and get to your business, we can get back to my lord's side."

"We will have to constantly be alert walking under the sun."

Vita sighed, "Look, all this figurative speech doesn't interest me. Just speak with plain words."

A slender brow lifted and Fate looked amused. "I speak just as it is though."

Vita's annoyance continued to be apparent. Their reasoning difficult for her to comprehend. "Why make it difficult on yourselves with this lifestyle? Is it that you enjoy staying hidden?"

Fate contemplated on ignoring, but the expectant frustrated stare from the short knight had her already speaking. "It has been taught since childhood."

"By the person you followed?"

"Yes."

"Well… I thought you didn't follow that person anymore. Isn't it alright for you to do as you wish now?"

Fate paused and looked to her side at Nanoha.

'She has a point…' Nanoha gave her a brief side glance. 'But even if, it is still too soon for comfort. He is still sending them after us.'

She looked back to Vita. "The attack near your lord's home… We are still being hunted. Our location will be easily exposed on the road."

With a blank look, Vita stared at Fate for a few seconds before turning back around. "Do as you wish."

Fate's brows furrowed. "After 15 years, I find it comforting." Nanoha took a second glance at Fate and a small upwards tug was placed on her lips.

Fate didn't need to further explain, but before she even realized it, her voice had come out softer and lighter in tone. The blonde warrior couldn't understand it herself, but seeing Vita's indifferent expression had her disturbed. She made an effort to end on a better note. It seems the knight had grown on her during the past weeks.

"The darkness?" Vita questioned aloud to herself. Further questions were on the tip of her tongue, but before it was allowed to spill out she forced her voice to die down. Instead, they went along in continued silence.

After weeks of travel, they were finally near their destination. The last daylight was seen before the moon made its presence and the group had stopped to rest for the night. Although a chilly night, no fire was made in hopes of keeping their positions concealed. With their packs unloaded and horses secured, they fixed their bed.

Vita looked around from under her blanket. Her head turned towards Fate who was unrolling her sheet.

"Where is your partner?" The knight asked.

Fate's motion of smoothing her sheet stopped and she too looked around. It had been awhile since Nanoha had excused herself. Normally, they wouldn't be concerned when the other disappeared. Sometimes, they had their own tasks to do and left for the day. This time, however, as they were getting closer to Eastern Mid Childa, Fate noticed the change about her. Nanoha had been more distant than usual.

Without word, the blonde grabbed her sword and stood up as she walked away from their camp. Vita's eyes followed her movements before she lost interest and turned from her position, pulling the blanket up to her neck. She closed her eyes, focusing on the sounds of the leaves crunching for a few seconds until she heard nothing but silence. Featherlike steps, she thought and waited for her slumber. Knowing their skills, they would handle themselves.

Many paces away from their camp, Fate found Nanoha leaning on a tree watching her arrive. Nanoha's empty stare seeming to disregard her presence.

"What are you doing here?" Fate walked the distance stopping in front of her, enough to close their large gap.

Nanoha shrugged and looked up to the sky.

"Let's go back."

Her gaze fell back to the blonde. 'I'd like to stay here for a bit longer. Go try to sleep.'

"What is disturbing you?"

She shook her head. 'I wish to be alone for a while.'

Fate sighed irately, "Look, I know what's bothering you. You want to keep me away from this secret, but Nanoha…" She took a breath and a step closer. "Don't push me away. To this day haven't I always accepted you?"

With displeasure, Nanoha frowned. Not towards the blonde, but the words she had spoken. Her body tensed while she fought with the words. Had she always accepted her? What made Fate choose her over their leader? Why did she accept her with all her lies? Nanoha stared long at Fate. Would she accept her again with her last hidden truth about her?

'I am afraid, Fate.' She finally clarified, revealing her deepest fear through her eyes. 'I'm afraid you will come to hate me.' For deceiving her. 'I'm afraid that when you come to know my past, you won't see me as the same person I am. I'm afraid you will no longer choose me.'

"How terrible could it be?" Fate scoffed. "Your thoughts are too deep into it. That is the only reason why you are too afraid to tell me. Don't handle this alone. Ease your burden and let me decide on how I will react."

Nanoha folded her arms across her chest protectively holding herself as she looked down to the side. For the first time in a long time, the insecurity and vulnerability showed visibly throughout her whole form.

'Perhaps…' She looked back at her. 'Fate, you are the only judge.'

It didn't matter to her how the world viewed her or how she would be received by others. Her only concern was of the blonde's. Fate's thoughts alone was all she cared for and she feared most on losing her.

The exposed feelings hit Fate like a wave. It was unsettling seeing the girl in front of her turned into such a weakling. Her courageous, confident woman. How big a deal could it be?

She grasped Nanoha's arms adding pressure to it as she spoke adding to the emphasis of her sincerity. "Whatever it is, Nanoha, I can only say that your secret is much overdue. I'm tired of this secrecy and the years you have kept it from me. Do not think too deeply about how I will feel about it. Have trust in us. This secret you so call it, will not affect us nor will it be some big revelation as you see it."

Nanoha looked squarely at Fate. Her eyes reflected honesty that could not be denied and an unfaltering bond that could not be broken. Nanoha wanted to believe in what she saw and shared, but words from years back came crashing down on her, haunting her views. Betrayal. Fate would be hurt the most by the betrayal of the person closest to her. They would surely be torn from her truth she had decided to keep.

The creases her brows made would not lighten and the headache she had been feeling throughout the trip from all the consuming thoughts only made it worse. She would never be forgiven for betraying Fate's trust and it would only be her fault.

If only she had been brave enough to have told her on the day they had first met fifteen years ago. She shrugged off Fate's hold and pushed her back lightly. 'Alright. Just give me time to think.'

A long dissatisfied look passed the blonde before nodding. She turned briskly without another word, walking back to their camp leaving Nanoha alone.

The white warrior's eyes were unfocused on the blonde's back as it disappeared into the night while her mind recalled the exchange she had with the young lord before leaving the manor.

"Your friend knows about this too?"

'No.' she wrote.

"How will she take to this?"

'I can only hope that she will forgive me for my lies.'

"Will she be upset?" Confused, Hayate continued. "It is great news, is it not?"

'To you, yes it may be. To Fate… I am not so sure.'

"Well, seeing as how you guys are so close, she will not care to it."

It is because you do not know of our situation, was what she thought, however she ended up writing something different. 'I hope you are right.'

"What makes one doubt? Do you not see what you both have?"

Nanoha closed her eyes. 'What we both have… What is it even? Where we stand… I don't even know.'

"You two aren't lovers?"

'Lovers… we share our nights together, yes… but is it love…? It has been too long since we've last spoken of the matters of our own heart…'

"Do you not know how she feels for you?"

'I am most important in her life, yet I would not call it love. She accepts me. She knows I love her, but she does not trust herself. She often loses touch with her inner being and her emotions, so she does not believe she knows what her true feelings are. Yet she knows she cannot live without me...'

"If that is not love, then what is?" Hayate threw her hands in the air.

'If things were so simple as to know simple words… It is difficult for her. She is finding the meaning and I am allowing her to however long it may take.' She paused in her writing thinking. 'If she finally has decided to love me, I will of course open my arms up for her, but if she has decided this is not love… I am willing to allow things to remain the way they are.'

"Why?" Hayate was baffled at her answer. How could someone stay so close to the person they love without feeling emotional drain and wanting more?

Nanoha stared at her for a second before smiling.

'I guess our twenty years together has already filled me enough just with her presence alone. She has put up with me for this long and given me so much than what I could have ever imagined. I am old enough to know how to control my feelings now… and I am satisfied.'

A frown. "Is that enough for you?"

'Of course not, but what can I do? I cannot force her to love me nor will I. She's given me so much already. I will be alright with her just allowing me to stay by her side, to be near her.'

"…" Hayate slowly shook her head. "Nanoha, I'd say it is not just Fate that is blind. You are blind too. A fool." She sighed. How could they not know what they had? It was obvious they both loved each other; it was clear to anyone who looked. Why did they complicate things? What was so difficult about it to need to take so many roads to get to a single conclusion? Were they filled with such insecurities that denied them truth?

Nanoha's lips curled up even with the insult. She found it to lighten her mood. 'Someone I used to know said something very similar to me.'

"Really?" She smiled. "She and I could get along."

'She was a maid who served delicious tea.'

"Well, if you ever run into her, let her know I would love to try it."

She chuckled and nodded.

A short silence fell upon them and they stared at each other with a pleasant smile. For once, they had a real civil conversation.

"You know, I need to report this to my king."

'Will he be delighted with this news as you?'

"Why wouldn't he be?"

'His grandfather killed everyone.'

"That does not mean he has the same mindset."

'Do as you wish.'

"He'll want an audience with you to know he was proper for the throne. There will probably be a new coronation."

'Fine.' She turned around to the door, her hand stopping at the door knob. Was she ready to meet the king? There were still some things she had to figure out and things that she found difficult to share. She sighed, finally opening the door and walked out.

"Here we are. Eastern Mid Childa." Vita spoke hopping off her horse.

They followed her lead as they walked up close to a large closed gate. Its thick wall extended, running far on both ends. Few guards stood in front of the gate, some at the top of the wall.

The guards were lax, holding their spears low, perhaps due to the low volume of travelers. Of course no one in their right set of mind would even head to where they were or go near it. The guards spoke with laughter to each other, joking about something they couldn't hear.

When they finally saw the travelers approach, they frowned and straightened; their spears going up high.

"Halt!" One guard commanded.

The guard walked up to the travelers, leaving his comrades behind watching.

"Turn around." He flicked his chin up to point to the other direction. "You know you can't cross here."

Vita reached into her pouch and pulled out her emblem. "I am here on Lord Hayate's command."

"What business does your lord have here? You know very well of the circumstances. No one has permission to enter."

"We are here to meet with the Melissae. Call her out for us."

"She is busy trying to appease the god." He grunted with ridicule, laughing inwardly at the thought. He thought it all a joke, not believing in the gods and thinking everything the Melissae did was futile. The plague was just a disease that was bound to disappear someday.

Vita pulled another item out of her pouch, a parchment with writing and a seal at the bottom. "My lord has written here ordering you to call the Melissae over."

He grabbed the paper held out to him and stared at it before swiftly turning. "Fine. Wait here."

The gate had remained closed, but when he waved a signal to the top, one guard at the top nodded in affirmation and blew a horn. It blew loud and low. All the birds in the forest behind the travelers flew startled from the noise. However, beyond the wall, everything was silent as if it lacked any life.

After a few moments, the gate started opening and a lone person walked through. She appeared small in comparison to the large gate, but as she walked up closer, she appeared normal in size.

They all examined the Melissae. Tall, blonde, and beautiful. Her eyes although were hollow and emotionless, appeared to see anything.

The Melissae stopped in front of Vita and the two warriors who stood behind.

"I greet you, lady Carim" Vita bowed. "These two are-"

"I know who they are." The Melissae spoke looking at Nanoha who didn't realize she had been clenching down on her teeth until spoken to. "I've been expecting you. You have finally returned."

Everyone within ears distance looked confused at her words, but as the Melissae turned around, their thoughts ran short.

"Come." The Melissae spoke.

The blonde and redhead frowned at the abruptness, except Nanoha. They didn't dare move from their spot, unsure of what to expect, but when Nanoha took a step the other two followed her example.

That was until the Melissae stopped right at the gate and looked back. "You may not enter, knight Vita."

All three were puzzled.

"What?" The knight almost growled. "I am here to abide by my lord's wishes and see that no harm comes to them."

"And none shall. You may wait out here or return to your lord."

"How come it is only I who cannot enter?" She scorned.

"If you do not wish to forfeit your life, you will heed my advice." The Melissae calmly spoke.

"What?" She was baffled. "Even if you are the Melissae, you dare threaten a knight?"

"I only speak to save your life. No living soul survives past this wall."

"How about them?"

"They are touched by the blood that flows within them. You though, are not blessed by the gods."

This not only confused the knight but also Nanoha. She stared wondering how Fate was able to enter. She appeared unfazed by the news, perhaps Fate didn't pick up on the words.

Letting out an exasperated sigh, the knight willed herself calm. Even if it did not make any sense to her, she was not going to die by some plague. "Alright. I shall wait out here. Take as long as you need."

Both the warriors gave a look to the knight before following behind the Melissae. The gate started closing as they walked in. It finally closed and everything went silent. No guards were on their side. They realized that the wall was wider than they thought, indicating the guards opening the gate from the inside.

Looking ahead, they could see green grass spread a few feet until it stopped abruptly like a hole had crushed down the earth. The ground was nothing but dirt and ruins. No life, but crushed buildings. A horrible desolate sight.

They began walking until Fate looked to where the green grass stopped. A few lonely flowers were barely clinging onto the grass.

"Hyacinthus." The Melissae spoke without looking behind to see what Fate was looking at. "They remain to be the last flowers that was once of Eastern Mid Childa."

Staring at the flower, something started churning in Fate's stomach and a sudden dread fell before her. Flowers as she knew Nanoha had described to be the flowers that grew only in her homeland. Her eyes widened a fraction at such a thought. She stood still in shock.

Her view fell on Nanoha's back. This sudden feeling she had was making her mouth suddenly dry. She watched as Nanoha continued on without glancing back. What was this?

Taking a quiet breath, she peeled herself away from the flowers and willed herself to move to follow behind the other two; her eyes constantly trained on Nanoha.

In front, Nanoha closed her eyes shortly and opened them. Her worry was etched on her face. She could feel the stare drilling a hole onto her back and wondered what the blonde was thinking. She carried on, not turning around, afraid of what she might find in her expression.

Another full day had passed since the king's awakening from his incident. The enemy corpse's identified and identities led to their leader, revealing the mastermind who had orchestrated the attack. A man well known of his hate for the king. It had been an amateur job and regretfully it wouldn't be the last of the sort; those who would always want more of a better ruler or end the stalemate like some of the many others that lived in both countries.

On that same night, most of the halls and rooms were empty. Dead with no signs of presence, for the king's immobile state had everyone away; no banquets, meetings or any disturbance that could hinder the king's path to recovery.

It was the perfect night for slipping undetected. Even the kitchen had been deserted for the night as the king carried little appetite for the two days he had been awake. A wooden door near the end of the kitchen hall grew a shadow of a human form. Slowly and quietly, the only sound that gave way was the sound of the doors hinges creaking open. It closed shut behind as the figure snuck inside and blended as one with the shadows.

Two sleeping figures, one on the bed and another on a chair was easily seen to lavender eyes that scanned the tiny surroundings. Approaching the middle of the room, the shadowy figure stopped, examining the sleeping form of the stranger fallen asleep on the chair.

Just then a whisper called out from the bed. "Nanoha."

The tall figure left the sleeping form and stood firm, looming with presence right in front of the bed. Her lavender eyes glowing in the night. She stared down at the slightly immobilized figure.

"You've managed to survive… It should have been expected." Teana sneered at herself, carefully sitting up. "We're such resilient creatures, are we not? Even Thanatos (1) can't seem to take a hold of us properly."

Teana looked at the sleeping girl, Nanoha's gaze following.

"Was it worth your traitorous acts?" She questioned. Her eyes looked conflicted, troubled with a sense of duty and what she felt. Subaru's peaceful sleeping face softened her emotions, feelings she never knew existed. "Betraying our order just to stay with her?"

Her focus returned to Nanoha and although not apparent, Teana was slightly surprised when their eyes met. She expected the older girl to emit a murderous aura with no mercy, but what she saw was of no contempt towards her. Quickly she looked towards the front. She needed no pity nor forgiveness.

"You came here for me, didn't you? Finish what you couldn't, just leave her alone." A sigh escaped her, feeling defeated.

A long silence passed and when Nanoha was unmoving, simply staring at her with an unfaltered look, Teana looked back to her. If only she could read her mind. Grab the words out of her mouth.

With confusion, she could see the older girl's lips move. Catching the idea, she sounded them out as it formed words.

"Pa-Per?" Teana frowned in puzzlement. She pointed to the corner of the room. "There isn't really anything in here much less anything to write with. Though if you look, my stuff are in the corner and should carry the ink and paper."

Teana watched as Nanoha dug through her set of clothes that Subaru had neatly folded. The older girl came back with the materials and started writing something.

'Who is she to you?'

Teana frowned. She looked again to the girl sleeping. "Subaru… A girl who was unfortunate to have met me. She never should have saved my life." Her brows knitted tightly. "I know what you're thinking. I have to kill her... but…" She paused looking angered. "I should have died then and now I can't kill her."

Nanoha was amazed when she watched those eyes soften as she spoke of the violet haired girl. She knew all too well of that gaze. It was a look of wanting to protect. A look that would soon be reserved for only one person, one of love.

"I never thought of anything other than our clan, but this girl… she intrigues me. Such kindness that helps out a complete stranger like me… I won't kill her. I can't." She looked back to Nanoha. "You should understand. It must be the same reason why you betrayed us."

'What are you trying to say?'

"Tell Fate, that I'm sorry I disappointed her. Kill me and get it over with it. Just don't kill her and please don't let her see me die…"

Nanoha couldn't believe what she was hearing. Was she defecting? She was going against the clan's rules.

She wrote again for Teana to read, 'What will you do if I let you live?'

Shaking her head, Teana replied. "I won't be returning."

Nanoha's eyes widened in shock. This girl who was sincerely devoted to serving, was really speaking of defaulting. 'He'll send someone after you.'

"Not unless you kill me."

'Will you stay with her?'

"What?"

'Do you want to protect her?'

"... Kill me. That is the only way to protect her."

A frown marred her face and Nanoha decided an alternative. She shook her head to Teana. She couldn't kill her when they were so similar. They only wanted to stay with the person they loved. How was that a crime? Teana was fortunate enough though. She was able to escape the bonds of the clan where Nanoha couldn't. While Subaru knew nothing of them, they could both escape together.

'I will be returning to camp and I'll tell leader I killed you.'

"What? Why are you doing this for me?"

'…There are things worth fighting for.'

Teana looked to Subaru. Living to protect her… It didn't seem that bad. Just how could she ever disobey her leader? The one who saved her and taught her everything she needed to know. She owed him her life. Her loyalty. That's what she was worth living for. Her leader.

Teana looked back to the front. "Killing me would be better than to go against leader's laws."

'You won't be going against him. You just won't be living for him. He won't even know you're alive if you two escape far away somewhere together. I will tell him you died. You will live.' Nanoha looked at Subaru before looking down at Teana again. 'Protect her. You are free from your shackles. Don't think you owe anyone anything. Live for yourself. You are your own master.'

"Is that how you live? For yourself?"

'…No…My chains are tied to Fate. I live for her.' This was Nanoha's inability to see that she was starving. Her ill soul would always be hungry for the change that she could not seek. A change that filled her which would only be by realizing she had a choice to stand next to Fate instead of placing her above. Until these invisible chains would melt off, they would always have a tight grip on her heart. 'I choose to live for her, protecting her. That gives me joy.'

"You are intriguing… so different, Nanoha. Every one of our brothers and sisters do not think about such things. We all live to serve our leader, except you. You are different. I don't understand how you were able to break away."

'…' Yet was she so different? Instead of serving their leader, it was as if she replaced him with Fate. Did anything change for the better?

"If I was not like this, I would probably aim for your throat for being so despising against our leader."

'…'

Teana shook her head with a self-pitying chuckle. "But here I am, going against him myself… I am surely one who will find punishment." Soon her expression was impassive. "Tell me, if you say you don't serve our leader, what's convincing you to return back to camp? You know what awaits you when you do…" She frowned. "Was it Fate who convinced you?"

Nanoha reluctantly nodded.

"She's going to get you killed." She matched Nanoha's sudden glare directed towards her. "I'm just hoping you know what you're doing. Going back there is suicide for you now. I can't believe she doesn't see it."

'Don't speak ill of her.'

"Listen. You don't want to see it, but such beings like Fate are dangerous once their trust is broken. I'm warning you to be careful. Don't betray her trust or she'll sharpen her claws at you."

Wasn't it the path of tainted innocence?

Nanoha swiftly turned, and instead of writing it, she mouthed her last words. 'Goodbye Teana.'

She stopped at the door when Teana called out her name.

"Nanoha." She too exchanged her last words. 'I hope you find your happiness."

Without looking back, she left the room with a cold look to her eyes.

In the short few days that had passed, everything had become a routine for Fate. She showed her face around commoners and nobles alike. During the evenings, she was visited by Vivio brought by a man with unknown identity outside the estate. They spent their time together until it was time for the man to take her back. And during that time they were in the open for many eyes to see, rumors spread like the plague.

...

On the third day since the king had been bedridden. There was a knock on his door and a voice to announce the presence of one of his concubines.

"Sire, lady Testarossa is requesting audience."

"Send her in." His voice echoed passed the doors.

"My lady." One of the attendants opened the door and she walked past him into the room.

The doors closed behind her as Precia walked in and curtsied. "My lord."

"What can I do for you lady Testarossa?" He pushed himself to lean up on his headboard.

"Have you heard of the rumors?"

"What rumors?" He asked. "I am stuck in this bed. What could I have possibly heard?"

"The one of Lady Fay and her child."

This had immediately piqued his interest and his head swung to her attention. "Her child?"

"Yes…" She paused, seeming to hesitate.

"Well, out with it. What child?"

"No one has confirmed it, but they believe it is her child… and…" She looked down to the floor and in a much quieter tone, "yours, my lord…"

"Mine?" Incredulous, his voice was irate and high with question. "How? That is not possible!"

"People say she has frightening eyes. Like a witch. One of her eye color matches my lord's and the other of Lady Fays." She stood silent, letting the king adjust to the news.

"Even so, how could it be mine?" He scoffed. "She has not been here long to bear my child."

"That may be so, but they think it not a coincidence. How a mysterious woman suddenly appeared and captured your heart. They believe you have finally brought her in after having affairs with her outside for a few years…"

"Bring her to me."

The blonde leaned in to soft lips and stole a kiss. After Vivio's visit, Fate had returned to her shared room with Nanoha.

In broad daylight, she had to be discreet. Everyone knew of her presence inside the manor. She had to make sure no one knew where she disappeared off to. Upstairs and down the hall, she stood in front of closed doors.

Her face softened upon opening the door when her eyes immediately fell upon lavender orbs who stared back at her gently. She sat at the table just as she had the previous days, as though she had been waiting for her, her entire life. Fate closed the door behind her and walked to where she sat. In turn, Nanoha stood out of her chair and slowly she cupped the blonde's cheek.

'Welcome back.'

Without warning, Fate dipped her head, capturing those alluring lips. She could not explain the thousand woes she had felt each time she was separated from this girl. Oh, how she melted with the contact. The delicacy to having those lips once again. For each moment she missed these lips, a hole grew and her heart screamed at her for it to fill it with warmth. It wasn't even a second longer before she pulled Nanoha at the hips against her, her arousal growing as a throaty groan escaped Nanoha.

'Fate, wait.' Nanoha tried to pull away but such strong arms kept her still. 'Slow down.'

"I can't" Fate growled, pulling Nanoha in again. "I need you now. Don't stop me Nanoha. Please."

Nanoha paused, her heart clenching at the plea. She kissed her back. 'You know I won't.'

Nanoha could feel the great urge Fate harbored, more rough than usual. Her hunger great and needy no matter how much she pulled. A kiss hardly satiating, Nanoha felt the tug of fabric and soon their kiss ended. She peered at Fate as they parted feeling slight disappointment from the missing contact, but the look she saw in Fate's eyes sent a shiver down her stomach to her core.

Fate licked her lips wet savoring the kiss they had shared. The taste of lust was addicting. It was glorifying and it felt right. She pulled and tugged Nanoha's dress and soon it was loosened to discard. Her eyes darkened at the sight. Fate swallowed as her gaze roamed over the bare figure. Arousal grew further and she could feel herself getting wet between her thighs.

Fate pushed Nanoha until she was laying back on the bed. Her lips nipped along her jaw and down her throat feeling the moan vibrating on her lips. Nanoha turned her head to the side, allowing more access for the blonde as she lightly bit and suckled until a small mark appeared. A triumphant grin formed and soon she continued to work her way down ready to mark her further.

It had been torture for Fate the past three days. After her dailiy routine, she would always return to her room the king had given her, downstairs where she stayed alone. Even knowing that Nanoha was upstairs, she couldn't risk always visiting her. And it left her empty. She became aware how much Nanoha impacted her life and the mark she had left in her heart. Nanoha clenched the unknown thirst she harbored; the loneliness that she had. She wondered if she would ever be able to survive without her.

Fate wanted to touch her like no other. Her scent, her body, to taste her until her presence lingered on her and to commit it to memory. The thought of having been so close but unable to reach her, drove Fate mad. She had to find a chance to visit Nanoha.

Until each sensation lingered on her body as memory, she would not stop touching Nanoha.

The daylight had grown stronger illuminating the room brighter than before, casting shadows over the fabric that had scattered on the floor. They laid together, basking in the warm afterglows of their touches, their naked flesh covered under a thin sheet. Nanoha, with her back pressed up against Fate was held in her arms both silently staring off into nowhere with their thoughts only consumed of each other's warm presence.

With soft touches, Nanoha rubbed Fate's forearm as she broke the silence. 'You were aggressive today.' Her tone was light to make sure the other was not offended. The hold around her tightened, bringing her closer to Fate.

A warm breath tickled Nanoha's neck as she heard the blonde whisper, "Sorry." And a light kiss was placed right below her ear.

'I did not mean it for you to apologize. I was just wondering… if you are satiated.'

Fate's blush had gone unseen. "Sorry, did I hurt you?"

'Stop apologizing. I am alright.' She grinned, 'except those bites-' she felt the other stiffen and placed her hand over the blonde's that was wrapped over her stomach. 'Sorry, it's a lie.'

Fate once again relaxed and nuzzled her face into the crook of the other's neck.

'Is something occupying your mind? You were different today… not a bad different' She hurried to say.

Fate shrugged and shook her head. "No. Nothing like that… It was just driving me crazy not being able to see you. I guess I just couldn't control myself."

Nanoha inwardly chuckled at her nonchalance. Fate had a way with words. 'You never have to control yourself. I don't mind what you do to me, I am more than happy to fill this hunger you have.'

Fate gave a nervous cough and shook her head again. "Well I do. Don't treat yourself so short. I don't ever want to hurt you."

A slight frown marred Nanoha's face as she shifted. 'You aren't hurting me. I wanted it too.' The arms around her loosened as she turned around, pulling her head back a little to see Fate's eyes and her feature's softened, her fingers resting on her cheek. 'I feel how much you want me and that's all I need.'

Fate stared. "You know, that's all I think about." She planted a kiss onto the palm that was on her cheek. "I never pictured us like this." She brushed auburn hair aside, uncovering her shoulder and kissed it before looking at her again. "You've become someone so pleasant." She leaned in lightly kissing her lips.

'Oh, so you think I'm pleasant am I?' Nanoha gave a mock glare lifting her hand to cup Fate's chin. 'I think you need to pick another word, again.' She kissed her again, her lips spreading out into a smirk as she sultrily whispered at the blonde melting under her touches. 'Tell me what I want to hear and I shall reward you.'

Fate's nostrils flared as hot air puffed out. Her lips were centimeters away from Nanoha's and she growled out, "You are desirable." Her hand shot out and grabbed the back of the auburn's head and pulled her in, smashing their lips together as she rolled on top of the shorter girl. Their teeth clashed slightly before their tongues battled hungrily. It was hard to tell if one or the other were moaning.

Control slowly weaseled through Fate's mind and they separated, both breathing hard; her forehead came to rest on Nanoha's.

A sigh escaped as she regretfully said, "I should go." Fate placed another soft kiss and whispered to smiling lips. "Don't go anywhere."

Fate pulled away off the bed and Nanoha immediately missed her warmth. She leaned on her elbow and watched as Fate started to gather her clothes.

'Must you go?'

"I will likely be summoned soon." Fate pulled her dress over her.

Nanoha sat up, pulling the sheet close to her chest. 'I wish you could stay.'

Her movements stopped and she turned to face Nanoha. After a small pause her shoulders loosened and her head tilted slightly with a longing look. "I wish so too… but I shall come back to you. At the end of the day, you are what I want to come back to. I don't know when, but you've become a part of me, like my other half that I have been missing."

Nanoha licked her lips and bit it. Her breathing erratic. Her eyes never left those ruby orbs and slowly she stood up. The sheet forgotten, she walked over to capture those lips that so often spoke words that made her heart flutter.

'Stay.' She kissed the jaw line before kissing her neck. 'Stay.'

"I…" She groaned. "I can't… not now." She willed herself loose. Her breaths coming short and quickened as she tried to stop Nanoha who kept trying to advance. "By now my mother has probably told the king about Vivio and will want to meet with me."

All a sudden, Nanoha stopped. The mood suddenly dropping. She stared blankly at Fate who matched her stare. Slowly she walked back to bed and the sheet that had fallen was now picked up and wrapped around her as she sat. 'It will be tough on her with so many eyes. I fear for her life in the castle.'

Fate frowned. "She'll be safe with me."

'But when we leave? What then? Must we leave her like this? She'll be alone for your mother to manipulate.'

"It's what leader wants. I will help accomplish this. She'll be alright with time."

Nanoha frowned. Was she so sure? 'I hope you're right.'

"She'll have to be. She'll be the king's successor."

'And you? Will you be alright?'

"You have nothing to be worried about. I will let nothing escalate with the king's advances towards me."

Nanoha raised herself out of the bed and tied the sheet around her before walking up to Fate again. 'That's not what I meant.' She ordered her to turn around and Fate did as told as Nanoha began to help tie her hair up. 'Will you be alright with leaving her here alone?'

"..." Fate stood silently allowing Nanoha to finish her bun and quietly answered. "I will do as leader wishes."

Her hands slowed and she sighed. 'Alright, I will not interfere then.' Once her hair was up, Nanoha backed away with disappointment. Nanoha really disliked the idea of leaving Vivio. She was such a small, sweet child, but she would do as Fate wished. She would always put Fate above anyone before involving her own feelings. She wouldn't do anything Fate disliked.

Back at the castle, Fate stood outside the king's doors dressed in fine clothing presentable to the king.

"Lady Fay is here." The attendant spoke through the doors.

"Send her in." The king said aloud.

Once inside, Fate stood at the foot of the king's bed. She looked down, awaiting the king's words who sat staring at her.

What felt like an hour only a minute had passed and finally the king spoke. "I'm sorry I have not called you sooner. I did not want you to see me like this." He waved his hand at himself. "Weak, pathetic."

Fate allowed herself to look up, shaking her head. "No my lord, you are anything but."

The king's stare seemed so stern that Fate immediately looked back to the floor.

"I have heard something that seeks my attention concerning you."

Knowing he would only continue she slowly lifted her face once more, looking at him innocently.

"About a certain child."

"…" Surprised eyes widened.

"Is she yours?"

Taking a deep breathe, she closed her eyes tightly before answering quietly, "Yes." A second passed and her eyes opened, but more resolutely. "She is my daughter."

"Who is the father?"

"I- That I do not know."

"One of your customers?"

"…"

The king sighed heavily. "What is her name?"

"Vivio, my lord."

"Vivio..." It sounded foreign. "Her age?"

"Four."

The king's eyes widened. "Barely a woman! You worked in a brothel for that long?"

"…" She did not answer for fear she would say the wrong words. She did not really understand, so she thought it best to let the king continue to talk. She really didn't know what to say.

"I'm sorry. I did not mean to sound so in shock. What you did in the past it doesn't… no… it does concern me. However, I love you Fay. That is why it should not get in between us." He patted the bed. "Come here, Fay."

Fate slowly walked over and sat at his bedside.

"People have been saying she is my child."

"Of course not my lord!" She shook her head in alarm. "How could I dare? Such a lowly person as I to bare your child. I would spread no such lies!" She shrunk away.

The king gently grabbed Fate's chin making her look straight into his eyes. "Do not call yourself low. You are not. I am not blaming you."

He allowed his hand to drop down. "Bring her over for a visit. I would like to meet her."

Eyes widened in shock but she quickly answered seeing he was expecting her words, "Yes, my lord." She got up seeing as he was lowering himself onto the bed.

"Good. I shall sleep some more then. I have been getting tired easily these days."

"Of course." She backed away to the doors, a hidden glint in her eyes he could not see. "Rest well."

...

It had been several days since Vivio had met the king and Precia working through with her manipulation. Everyone knew the king had no children, until Vivio came along. Many within the castle thought the king was unable to have children.

Yet those rumors changed the moment she appeared. People thought that Vivio was the king's bastard child. A child from a whore.

Pressing the king, Precia had been suggesting to make the child his daughter, to carry on his will. He laughed but angrily dismissed the idea. Telling her how foolish she was. He could not make someone not even his blood his birthright. Yet Precia pressed on saying how no one knew she wasn't of his blood. He needed an heir. He had no kin and no children to take over once he would die. His women could not bear him any, so he needed to adopt.

After continuous pressure, the king finally relented to Precia's notion, but it would not be easy to convince the council as it had been the king. However after a few weeks of arguments and shouting with the council, his insistent pushing's, and his proclamation that his words were final, the king finally announced Vivio his legitimate heir. No one accepted her, knowing she was a bastard child. Still, the deed was done and the whole of Al Hazard welcomed the news with juicy gossip.

During the time the king had argued with the council, time was spent for Vivio and her studies and practices. Her days flew by, far from boredom but tiring having much to do. From morning to dusk. The four-year old child though never complained. Her face however showed much anxiety and sadness, but with time with it would soon fade. She was to grow to an elegant lady. Her misery would be forgotten… at least that was what Fate and everyone else decided.

Few times she was allowed to visit her mother, Fate, but many dismissed her without allowing her close. It was enough that they took a bastard as an heir. Even when the king never took another queen after his wife's death long ago, they would not accept a whore to hold any status in name. Thus, Fate stayed away, leaving Vivio with much to do.

Besides, Fate had her own troubles. She tried many methods to keep the king off of her, from excuses to trickery and drugs. The love struck king bought them all. Never having sensed a single occasion off.

And as the days passed like this, the time had finally arrived. The king's fondness of the child could be witnessed from everyone. The more he spent with the child, the more she grew on him, a king who had no children, no heir. It further proved to everyone that she was his child carrying his blood, for no father would treat such a child as he did if they weren't. All was according to plan.

Fate's mother secretly visited her room. Just as Fate had when she arrived, her mother gave her clothes and weapons back. Fate took her belongings, knowing what her next assignment was. Surprisingly both could not conceal the one emotion that they tried to contain for their eyes held fear. How couldn't it be? They were committing treason.

To assassinate the king.

The moon was round, almost a full moon. No one would have known at such a peaceful time, a horrendous crime would take place.

Fate stood in front of Nanoha dressed in her blue armor. They had been silent for a while.

'Will you be able to do it?' The shorter of the two finally spoke. 'To kill your king?'

"Yes." She neutrally said, not picking up on the one sided direction of her speech.

'It will be to go against your country.'

"No. It will be for the better good. Leader knows what is best for our country. He will help bring prosperity and finally end this stalemate and win against Mid Childa."

'Do you really believe that?' She could care less for Mid Childa or Al Hazard. Fate was her only reason for living.

"Yes."

'Alright then.' She nodded. 'Would you like me to help you?'

"No. I will do this alone. It is my mission leader has tasked me to." She finally left her spot to the window. "You should prepare to leave. Mother says, the council will rid of my presence once the king is dead."

'What about his concubines?'

"They will stay, in name only. They will hold no power. They were after all the king's women. Their name will give them a place to stay."

Another nod, 'be careful Fate.'

A smirk planted on the blonde's lips before she dropped out of the window. Arrogance. Nanoha's couldn't help but smirk too as she stared at the empty window. What luck would Fate need?

The blonde stealthily climbed the high wall and jumped over the ledge onto the balcony. She stuck close to the wall next to the double doors, curtains preventing her from looking within. Luckily the doors were unlocked. She took a deep breath and immediately her face turned steel. Quietly she opened it enough to pass through, not wanting to let in any wind.

The room as usual was dark, no candles lit, as she had preferred. She could sense the king's form lying on the bed and walked up to the bedside. She stared down at him, eyes glowing.

How easy it was to kill a king. She found it boring. Perhaps she could let him have a chance defending his life. She wanted some fun at least. Grabbing a short dagger from her belt, she dropped it onto the bed. It made a small fluff sound, but it was enough to alert the king. He awoke with widened eyes seeing someone hovering next to him. His terror though vanished instantly when he recognized the figure.

"Fay, what fright you have given me." He sat up, but as his hands pushed him up further, it felt cold metal.

The king looked down at the object under his hand and grabbed it to look at it more close in the dark. He frowned at the sharp object.

"What is this?" He looked up at her. "Why are you dressed like that?"

"Sh…" Fate lifted her finger up to her lips.

He frowned further until he saw the sword she carried. "What are you doing?"

Fate cocked her head to the side. "What kind of question is that? I am here to kill you."

"What?" He pushed himself out of the bed, opposite of where she stood. "What is the meaning of this Fay? Stop this at once!"

Fate walked like a predator to the end of the bed and turned the corner of the bedpost until she came upon the other and finally turned having nothing blocking her way.

"What has gotten into you?" He asked with the dagger in his hand. He shouted her name as she inched closer. "Fay!"

"My king, I would lower my voice if I were you. You wouldn't want to endanger your guard's life, would you?"

"Fay… How could you do this to me?" Finally anger rose in him. He felt betrayal spread throughout his body. "Who sent you? Whose country do you serve? Did King Clyde send you? No… It can't be him. He wants this treaty as much as I do. This would hurt both our people. Who's behind you? Who stands with you?"

Fate paused. She had suddenly remembered her king as a good ruler. He thought best for his people. Was she really making the right decision?

Seeing Fate's momentary falter, he shouted for his guards. "Anyone out there? Assassin!"

Then Fate looked towards the doors. She looked back at the king and grinned, a chilling grin that sent chills down the king's spine.

"Shouldn't have done that." She said which almost sounded like she purred to the king whose eyes started widening. When the doors opened, Fate disappeared in a flash.

The two guards that kept watch at the king's room came rushing in.

"Are you alright my lord?" They asked with alarm.

Just then, they felt a presence behind them and when they turned to look, it was too late. She had drew her weapon and sliced into them. They never had a chance to see who attacked them.

Fate kept her gaze on her king as his eyes couldn't blink. They were wide in shock seeing his guards drop to the ground.

She turned to close the door before she stepped over their bodies knowing there would be no more interruptions. Finally she closed the distance.

Her eyes for a fraction softened to him. "I hate to kill my king. You are a good person and have treated me very well… but leader wishes it."

She held him by the shoulder and then plunged her sword deep into him, the king, who never had the chance to use the dagger. His body frozen, his hands jolted up holding her by her shoulders, refusing to fall but more for support. With disbelief, he stared straight into her eyes. He couldn't believe that this girl in front of him was capable of such acts.

"By the way, my name…" She went close to his ear. "It's Fate."

She pulled her sword out of him hearing him groan in pain and as he crumpled to the ground. "W-Why…"

"You ask an assassin why?" She looked down at him who could not look up at her. "I was only sent to kill you… ah… there is Vivio who is not my daughter…" She saw his form stiffen. "You know Precia? She was the one with the brilliant plan."

"P-Precia…" He half growled half gurgled blood.

"Don't waste your strength mulling over that… My mother is a tricky one. Oh… I never did get the chance to find out how she ended up in this place, living in such luxury and prestige. Well it does not matter to me. I'm done with this place finally." Then she frowned. "I don't know how you people do it chattering away. It has really tired me. Even now… but it's the least I can do to allow you to go with me by your side right? You did say you loved me… Say can you tell me what love is?" She looked away slightly in thought before looking at him again. "Forget I asked."

Fate bent down and grabbed his tunic to wipe her blade of the blood. She stood up and sheathed her sword. When she was about to walk away, the king grabbed her ankle causing her to look down at him.

"D-Did you not have any ounce of love towards your king?"

"Love?" She took a second to think on the word. "Sorry, it's like I asked. I don't know what love feels like."

She pulled her feet out of his loose hold and walked to the balcony doors and opened them wide.

"You will surely hang for this!"

"No, my king." She looked back. "You will die and I will have achieved my mission without anyone knowing who killed you."

The next morning the king was found dead on the floor. Panic exploded within the walls of the castle and everyone was rushing around trying to figure out what to do and put things in order. The assassin was long gone and there were no eye witnesses to help ease their minds. Soon the news would spread like wild fire to the citizens and they would have no answer for their king's death. It wasn't until the bells tolled announcing his death that it hit everyone like a bull and every action finally stopped and they all mourned.

While they grieved, an investigation to find his murderer turned frantic, hoping to reveal the culprit to ease the rowdy citizens from the news. Fortunately, as soon as it had begun, they had found the culprit to be none other than the king's attendant, Bertrude. Many had spoken saying they bared witness to his presence at a witches shop purchasing mandrake. Upon Precia's further manipulation, more spoke out of Bertrude's treason. He had used it on the king and killed him.

Upon the short days of his capture, Bertrude was tortured and fresh blood flowed on top of dried one. His beatings were excruciating, questioning and pressing him for answers to finding an accomplice. It wasn't until his quickly released screams spoke for himself, finding his tongue had been sliced off by someone. Still, they punished him for his treacherous acts.

After hitting dead leads upon dozens, the investigation was half concluded. It was obvious someone was keeping him silent, but having no other hints they had no choice but to halt the investigation and give their citizens answers. To make them happy, they were told the culprit responsible for the king's death would hang the next day.

While the bells continued to toll mourning the death of the country's king, the people within the castle were preparing for the ascension of his 'daughter', Vivio at the merely age of four to be the next ruler on the throne. The council could no longer hold off the country without a ruler. Precia, being the oldest concubine of them, decided she would help act in Vivio's steed while she studied until she was of age to make proper decisions and become a fit ruler.

It was a different story for Fate. As her mother said, the council pushed Fate out without even allowing her to bid her supposed daughter goodbye. No last words were exchanged. For many days to come, Vivio would cry, until it would be but a dull ache of a lingering memory that would soon pass until she returned to her studies.

Fate was outside town dressed in her warrior outfit, her mother and Arf in front of her and like them she wore her cloak to hide her features. She stood there waiting for any last words before she left. It was then that Precia handed her daughter a sealed letter.

"Give this to Jail." She commanded.

Fate grabbed the letter with a nod and tucked it away. Then she glanced at Arf, a small smile gracing her usual stoic lips, her way of bidding a farewell. With a final look, she turned to leave, but before she could walk away, a hand grabbed her wrist. She looked at the grip on her before her mother's eyes.

They stared at each other and Fate patiently waited for her to speak.

After a moment, "Don't forget what I said." Precia warned. "Trust only yourself."

A frown. "Don't. You lost your chance to mother me when you abandoned me. You aren't—"

"You think I didn't know about your little friend who stayed with you this whole time?" Eyes narrowed watching other ones widening a fraction. "Why do you think I allowed her to stay? It's because she posed no threat to me. If she were to be a problem in hindering you from your task, then I would have had her removed, but because I saw that you were capable I let it slide." She pulled on the wrist bringing her closer. "I'm warning you. It's those ones closest to you. She's the one you'll want to watch out for. She'll be the one to betray you"

Fate yanked her hand away. "You're wrong." Her voice was tight, trying to control her anger.

Precia smirked and turned, "Return to me when you are done playing with that girl."

"I will never return to you." She spoke coldly, also turning around swiftly before walking away.

The air was dreary as Fate traveled back with Nanoha to their camp. They met up down along the road as planned. Nanoha could sense Fate's mind miles away and allowed her the distance she needed.

It was apparent after parting with her mother that Fate had been uneasy. It bothered her thinking that perhaps her mother was telling the truth. What if she was right? Nanoha was known to have a lot of secrets. Would those secrets make Nanoha betray her?

'Fate…'

Her mind snapped back to reality and she turned not having realized Nanoha had stopped a few steps behind her.

"What is it?"

'About Teana…' She had to bring about the matter sooner or later.

The name immediately jogged her memory. "Oh yea, we should go get her."

'No.' Fate paused and lifted a brow in confusion. 'I told you we talked.'

"Yes, you did, but I don't know about what."

'Well… I think it would be best if we let her stay.'

"I don't understand. She should be fit to travel by now."

'We talked…'

A little annoyed by now she shifted on her heels. "Yes. So you've told me."

'She's in love with that girl.'

A single frown line marred her perfect skin. "And?"

Nanoha sighed, 'She wants to stay.'

"What?" Her pitch was a little higher than normal, holding a sting to it. "What are you trying to say?"

'Tell leader I killed her.' She didn't dare stepping closer to her. 'Teana deserves the life we can't have.'

"What life, Nanoha?" Her hands were moving about, anger that had been contained was now being fed to life. "She has one! One dedicated to leader, like us! Don't tell me you've spouted your nonsense to her!"

'What?' Baffled, Nanoha frowned.

"She's always been devoted and a good warrior. She would never betray leader!"

'I didn't do anything! She's in love! She can't control what her heart feels!'

"Wait here." Fate growled. "I'll get her."

Nanoha caught her arm almost immediately out of instinct, stopping her from passing her. It didn't even cross her mind if Fate were to lash out at her. 'Let her be. She wishes for-'

"No, she doesn't! She isn't you! Teana is loyal! You are the one who manipulates everyone! You are the one who is trying to make me change when I am perfectly fine. You think everyone hates it all because you do? You're the one that's different while everyone wants to follow him!"

Her grip loosened and shock was expressed on her face. 'You think I'm manipulating you?'

"…I'm just saying," She spoke in a quieter tone, "that Teana will want to come with us."

Her hand slowly dropped back to her side and Nanoha shook her head. 'There are some things Fate… that even you must understand.' She sighed walking forward. 'No one is forced when the heart is their owner.'

They could see their brotherhood from afar. They had traveled for many days and finally it was in sight. Fate never went back to the castle to retrieve Teana and instead the two went with very few words.

Fate's expression never brightening even upon their return. It never did even when she was eager to get back. It had been stoic like a mask. She walked ahead with Nanoha trailing behind. She wanted to hurry to inform leader of her success.

Then, she felt it. Fate's step paused sharply. The murderous aura filled the air and she jerked her head back to see a form flying towards them. A body rammed hard into Nanoha slamming her down; her head having made contact with the hard ground blinded her briefly, vision invaded by whiteness. A blade pressed up to her neck, yet when Nanoha regained her sight, she did not struggle and simply laid there on the hard dirt looking into anger filled eyes.

"You dare return?" The form on top, their sister, hissed at Nanoha. "I'll kill you!"

The second she finished her sentence, she was yanked off Nanoha and a bone crunching punch could be heard throwing the sister to the ground. She pushed herself up, ignoring the cracked rib and growled.

"Do not protect her sister! She is a traitor to us all!"

Fate ignored her and rushed to Nanoha, kneeling down. Her hands roamed all over her body in a frenzied state.

"Where are you hurt?" She panicked. "Are you alright? Are you bleeding? Do you feel any pain?"

Nanoha pushed onto her elbows and grabbed moving hands still. 'Calm yourself, Fate. I am alright.'

Fate's shoulders relaxed and pulled her hands free. She stood watching Nanoha getting up and brushing off the dirt.

"You didn't evade her." An accusation.

'No.'

"You should have."

'She only did what she was supposed to do.' What Fate failed at.

She was right, but Fate couldn't help feeling angry and irritated. "I would not have forgiven you if you had died." Fate looked back to their sister before Nanoha could speak. "Quattro, do not concern yourself. I will speak to leader on her behalf."

"You know of her crimes then!" She shouted. "Why do you not take her life? For our brother?"

"It matters not." Fate walked and stopped just by her sister's side, her face turned slightly toward Quattro but they did not exchange gazes. "If you attempt this again, I will not be as generous the next time."

"Are you threatening me, sister?" Quattro's face looked straight ahead, unafraid.

"No. It is a warning." She looked forward again. "Keep that in mind."

Fate then walked away and Nanoha sighed, following. She did not even glance at Quattro as she passed, but the murderous intent stayed. Suddenly the others all gathered surrounding the two, looking as though they were ready to pounce on her.

Before tension could escalate, their leader, followed by other teachers, were in front of Fate smiling brightly, his arms wide open.

"Fate, my girl!" He hugged her tightly, patting her back before releasing her. "You've returned successful."

"Yes leader." She handed a letter to him from her mother. "I am to deliver this to you."

"Excellent." He took it from her, but without reading it, he tucked it away into his clothes. "By the way, Fate, what have you brought here?"

He walked passed Fate and stood in front of Nanoha who had been standing behind her silent. They looked at one another, their expressionless features mirroring each other's. Just then, Jail peered behind him and jerked his head. The teachers moved at his commanded gesture and grabbed Nanoha.

Fate instantly placed a vice-like grip on one of the teacher's hand that grabbed Nanoha's arm. She looked back at her leader. "Leader, Nanoha returned with me to beg for your forgiveness."

"Take her." Leader ordered once again, his voice as steel.

"Please!" She tightened her grip on the teacher not allowing him to move, almost cutting off his circulation. "She only did it because of me!"

"Let go, Fate." He narrowed his eyes at the blonde.

Fate's grip loosened, but didn't remove it. She stared at Nanoha with troubled eyes.

"Don't make me say it again."

This time, her hand slipped down and moved to the side. Nanoha closed her eyes with dejection and allowed herself to be dragged away.

Fate stood firm inside his office. "Leader, please give her another chance! I beg of you! Nanoha did not intend to betray you. She only did it to get to me."

Jail sat in his chair staring at her; a letter laid out open on top his desk. Fate had knocked and came into his office concerned and begging.

"Leave me."

"Let her prove herself! She will not fail you!"

"When have you become so outspoken, Fate?" He stood up. "Must I punish you too? Know your place."

Immediately her mouth shut and her eyes followed his movements coming to stand in front of her.

"You will obey me." He ordered. "Go."

Without hesitation, she obediently left, her lips in a thin line.

Jail rolled his eyes and went back to his seat looking over the letter again.

Jail,

Fate has succeeded. The treaty's progress has finally halted.

The throne is mine. Now, you must make sure King Clyde does not

interfere again. Once the threat is eliminated you shall have your war

and Mid Childa will once again be a part of our reign!

Precia

Inside the dark prison chamber, Nanoha chained by her wrists and ankles was bound to the wall. Eyes closed and head hung low she patiently awaited her sentence. In the dark silence, she wondered to the deep recess of her mind of any lingering regrets. She was at the end, but she couldn't tell if this was what she wanted. She was with Fate. She had her… but did she really? Had she captured her heart? No… Yet, she felt she was alright with just having been by her side. It was all that she had wanted… Wasn't it?

She couldn't tell if she was satisfied with just that though. For reasons unbeknown to her, she still felt attachments to this world beyond Fate. But what? Why? Whatever for? The world had disappointed her time and time again. Yet what could possibly be making her feel this tightening sensation in her gut? Why was she suddenly thinking about her parents looking sadly down at her?

Then, her face lifted once the door sounded seeing Jail by the open door.

Their eyes locked. "Did you enjoy yourself at Fate's side?" He spoke, closing the door and walking his way in. Her chain's rattled as she shifted, watching him move. "She is a sweet thing is she not? Thinking I would forgive you." Stopping in the middle, he asked a simple question that sent a hard thump in her chest. "Do you wish to remain by her side?"

A frown marred her face, not understanding what he was plotting. He was toying with her with that devious smile he wore.

"You know, Nanoha, I never did like you." He walked closer. "Why? It's because we both know who you are, where you came from." She narrowed her eyes at his accusation. "Don't look at me like that. You know what I'm talking about. That day, I never would have imagined my men bringing a child from Mid Childa… and not just any child!"

Eyes widened at his words and soon saw a hand reaching to her. She flinched at the contact against her neck expecting to be killed, but he pulled the necklace around her neck that stayed hidden in her clothes. His thumb caressed the necklace's crest.

"You didn't think I wouldn't know did you? I was going to kill you then, but I thought perhaps, just perhaps this girl could actually come of use to me in the future. Maybe… oh I don't know, say help betray your country?" He grinned staring at her well-hidden unease and he let go of her necklace. "Listen carefully, Nanoha that time is now. I will spare your life and allow you to stay by Fate's side if you succeed in this mission assigned to you."

Chains rattled loudly.

"Yes, yes! You wish to stay with her too don't you?"

Nanoha sought any means to be with Fate. Her eyes pleaded, her form begged with fisted hands that turned white from the pressure against the shackles she struggled against. She nodded, a display that she intended to listen. She reassured him her loyalty once again as she did years ago when she was but a child who knew nothing, who had nothing but orders. She would do anything to be with her love. She could be a puppet once more if he allowed her to stay by Fate's side, the only reason she stayed. She submitted to him once again.

Her desperation made him grin with wickedness. "You will return to Mid Childa."

Her eyes widened with surprise. Color returned to her hands as the pressure was released from going slack, but tensed again ever so slightly.

"You…" He emphasized and paused adding to the dramatic effect. "Will go and assassinate King Clyde." The wicked smile never left his face and laughter immediately filled the air as he watched lavender eyes turn into dread, color draining from her face. "Yes, that's right! Your king. Your country's king! You will assassinate him just as Fate assassinated hers!" He grabbed her hair in his palm, yanking slightly, and she hissed at the pull as her face was drawn forward. "Don't be so surprised. Fate was able to do it. It's nothing. You do want to be with her don't you?" He inched closer to her face. "Don't you? You have no other choice anyways. If you fail, you know what happens right?"

Quickly he let go of her hair and stepped back as his laughter rang in the room while unsettling chains rattled with madness.

Wow this chapter was a handful. It went by SO FAST! All of you was telling me to pick up the pace, so I did as told. The king is finally dead! My plan was having the relationship build more with Vivio and the king, but seeing as how everyone was saying it was slow, I decided to listen to you guys and now it like zoomed past my eyes. I wanted to make you guys happy even though I personally think the connection and emotions lacked a lot. Now I can't pick up the pace any longer or else the story will be so out of whack and missing the important pieces. You guys can't tell me it was super fast because that's what you wanted! LOL!

Anyways, this year is almost over! WOW! It flew by so fast! I didn't realize how late my update was. I won't write when my next update is lol. I seem to always be saying it will be soon, but end up being late. Sorry!

Thank you and don't forget to review please! It will be my Xmas present from you guys! :)

Merry, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I'll see you guys in 2016 with chapter 11! Hopefully I will try to make time for my other stories soon, but no promises!

Bye~
