Brown eyes stared up at the white ceiling as the young woman sighed deeply, her arms spread out and away from her body, her black locks splayed over the white pillow.
The proposal from Sesshomaru had been almost overwhelming to her, the words making her heart pound madly in her chest. She had never in a million years thought that a demon as strong and handsome as he would prefer her to the hundreds of other women he could have at his beck and call.
Rin didn't bother to sit up as the door opened and shut, the other sighing softly before her form joined her friend's, her own body flopping on the mattress.
"Hey," Kagome mumbled dully, her own blue eyes meeting the same ceiling, "so… wow…"
"Yep," the young woman nodded, thankful that the two girls were friends long enough to understand each other without words, "what a day…"
"Yeah," the other agreed, her head turning to look at the pale cheek, "you get the same question I did?"
"Uh-huh," Rin sighed, "what do we think about it."
"Wow," was the only thing Kagome managed to say, her friend nodding dumbly in agreement.
Both girls managed to stay in a comfortable silence for a moment longer before Kagome pulled herself up.
"So," she started once more, "I'll… I'll go tell InuYasha that it's a no then."
"What!?" Rin asked as she sat up, "why!?"
"Well… you're gonna say no of course," the young woman murmured almost bitterly, "so… i-it's not fair if I go and you don't-"
"Don't jump to conclusions-" Rin protested.
"Rin, I know you told Sesshomaru that you'd only go if I said yes-"
"So why are you saying no then?"
"Because then you'd find another reason not to go-"
"One, that makes no sense," the young woman listed off her fingers, "and two, don't make out to be spineless!"
"You're not exactly the most confident person when it comes to love," Kagome pointed out without malice in her voice, "why not!?"
"I just… it's not like I need to be in a relationship-"
"That's because you never put yourself out there," her friend murmured, "Rin-"
The young woman said nothing as she turned her head away from the other, her lower lip bitten as she searched for an answer.
"Is it because you don't want to lose someone like you lost your family?"
Still Rin said nothing as she swallowed thickly, her grip on the sheets tightening slightly.
"Rin-"
"You… you don't know what it's like," Rin admitted, "to have everything and in one second… just lose it all…"
"No, I don't," Kagome murmured as she sat down beside her friend, her hand covered the other, "but you should also know that it means you need to live before it happens… to love before it happens…"
The young woman swallowed thickly as she looked to her friend, a light mist over her brown orbs.
"Would it really hurt… to let someone like Sesshomaru love you?" the young woman asked with a small smile, Rin managing to bleat out a little laugh.
"If my heart breaks," she murmured, "it's on you."
"Saw that coming," Kagome grinned, "but if it means you're happy, I'll take that risk."
"You make it sound like I'm not happy," Rin informed her as the few tears in her eyes finally dropped out, the tissues dabbing the liquid.
"I know you are," the young woman smiled, "you'll just be happier when you're in love-"
"There you go again, spouting nonsense," her friend smiled as she stood, "come on, you and I both need some dinner before we go to bed. Final touches with the garden in a few days, until then, we need to figure out what they are."
"Work work work," Kagome pouted, "you're a slave driver Rin!"
"It gets it done," Rin shrugged, as her friend sighed deeply, "but… do you wanna go tell InuYasha that you're going with him?"
The young woman bolted up, her face beaming.
"Really!?" she asked, "you're going!"
"Well-"
"I'm only going if you're going," Kagome told her, "and don't make me hate you for not going."
Rin laughed lightly as she timidly nodded, "I-I guess so-"
"Oh thank you thank you thank you thank you!" the younger squealed as she squeezed her friend tightly around the middle, her body practically bouncing on the balls of her feet, "I'm uh… I'm gonna go find him!"
The young woman giggled as she watched her friend run from the room like an excited teenager, her smile lingering before the corners of her lips turned down slightly.
It wasn't like her heart didn't leap up into her throat when the demon had asked her out; she was immensely surprised that the demon didn't hear it. Her shoulders sagged slightly, worry in her that if she did chose to open up to him, he might one day decide to leave her more broken than she ever was.
"Oh screw it," she muttered under her breath.
"Rin?"
The young woman felt her heart leap into her mouth at the sound of the deep timbre, her body turning to see the demon standing tall by the doorway, his eyes calm as they studied her.
"Are you going to make this a habit?" Rin asked softly as she took breaths, Sesshomaru smirking softly.
"I'll try not to," he murmured as he took a step towards her, the young woman's brown eyes skeptical.
"Just like you'll try and not listen to our conversations?"
Sesshomaru's head tilted slightly as he stepped up to her.
"My apologies," the demon told her, "it's an occupational hazard."
"I guess," Rin bit her lower lip, unsure of where to take the conversation, the long fingers reaching to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear surprising her.
"If you do not want to say yes, you do not need too," Sesshomaru murmured softly, Rin stunned by words.
"I… I-"
"I will not take offense," the demon pressed on while she still stammered softly, his hand reaching to take hers, his lips lowering to brush over the knuckles, "I apologise for my rashness."
"Uh… I-I-"
"It was not my place to make you feel uncomfortable," his body turning slowly to the door, "I apologise once more."
"No! Wait, that's not it!"
Sesshomaru turned in surprise to her, her hand on his arm stopping him, her mouth closing while her face flushed deeply as she became aware of what she said.
"I-I… uh…" she swallowed thickly, "i-it's n-not... that I don't… want too," Rin murmured nervously, "I… I just…"
"Is it about what Kagome mentioned?" Sesshomaru asked softly, "about losing someone?"
"Y-Yeah," the young woman nodded weakly, "I… I've always been scared… of getting really close to someone… because of my parents."
"You mentioned them during our dinner," the demon turned to her, "may I ask… what happened?"
"I-they," she sighed deeply, "when I was twelve… my parents and my brothers went to our cabin, like we always did every summer. We went later than usual… I forget why… it might have been because I was too late packing or because my brother was with his girlfriend… not that it matters."
"Rin-"
"We were driving late at night… my mother was asleep and so were my two brothers… I was only half-asleep… my father glanced back to me to smile at me… and then I saw the headlights."
Hands slipped around her cheek almost tenderly, his thumb brushing away tears she didn't notice existing.
"So… th-that's what I mean when I say I know what it's like to lose everyone in a second," Rin stammered softly, praying that her shaking would stop and that her tears would cease, "and I guess that's why I've only ever been with one person," she gulped down air as her breath sawed in and out of her, "even though I didn't love him… I just thought it'd be easier when we parted…"
"Was it?" Sesshomaru dared to ask, watching as she timidly nodded.
"It was… when we left… but I just felt this overwhelming guilt when I was with him…"
"And what about me?"
Rin felt her body freeze at the words, her eyes widening slightly while the demon pressed on.
"Are you afraid to say yes because you're worried about feeling this guilt… or because you're worried about having to be parted from someone?"
The young woman turned to look up at the demon, his amber eyes sincere.
"Th… The latter..."
Her head felt tilted gently before a pair of firm lips covered hers, surprise on her face slowly relaxing as she relaxed into the kiss, her own lips tentatively press back, her fingers slowly reaching to touch the hand around his cheek.
Sesshomaru gently opened his amber eyes when he felt her push back, his amber orbs noticing her pale lids covering her orbs, diamond tears caught in her long dark lashes, a pang in his heart as he knew they were caused by his selfishness.
Rin felt excitement quiver in her heart at the touch of their lips, something she had never felt when she was with Kohaku. The demon was on a whole other level compared to the young man, his confidence and strength made him in a league of his own, coupled with his attractiveness and it was easy to see why Sesshomaru was desired by so many women, Rin flushing as she figured she was now amongst them.
The young woman felt the demon press into her lips harder, Sesshomaru feeling a yet unknown thirst bud in him, his hands slipping from her cheeks to slide down her arms and snake around her back, his fingers splayed as he pressed her to his chest. Squeaking slightly in surprise, Rin slowly conceded as her hands rested on his shoulder and arm.
Lips broke for quick gulps of air before they returned to their devious actions, the demon almost advancing on her unintentionally, Rin's feet backing to keep her comfortable, a second squeak slipping from her covered lips as her knees hit the back of the bed, the two of them tumbling to the soft mattress.
Sesshomaru pulled up from the young woman, her chest heaving slightly as she panted for air, her lips parted while her innocent brown eyes stared up at him, her midnight locks spilt on the burgundy sheets.
"Rin," the demon unconsciously whispered, his lips lowering to find her throat, a small hum slipping from the young woman.
"Nn… Se… Sesshomaru," Rin murmured, her hands reaching to push on his chest, "n-no… wait…"
"What is it?" the demon asked as he lifted his head, his own amber eyes boring into hers.
"W… We need to st-stop," the young woman stammered slightly, the look he gave her making butterflies flit in her stomach.
"Why not?" Sesshomaru murmured, his lips skimming over the exposed pale collarbone.
"Th-The d-door's open-"
"I can fix that," the other teased, his lips pulling into a smirk at the sight of her deep flush.
"A-And I-I'm still you-you're employee and-"
"I understand," Sesshomaru whispered softly as he pulled his body up off hers, his hand gently helping her up to a seated position. The confusion on her face was evident as her gently swept a lock of hair behind her ear. "I am willing to wait for you," the demon murmured, his eyes soft as he accepted the idea that he was attracted to a woman he knew for a limited time, "that is, if you want this of course."
Rin swallowed thickly as she looked up at him, her brown eyes filled with innocence and beauty.
"I… I just don't want to be broken," the young woman whispered quietly, "that's all…"
"The last thing I want is to break your heart," the demon murmured quietly, his hands slipping down to her cheeks, "and I promise you, I will not."
Chocolate eyes searched amber, the sincerity in his orbs making her heart flutter.
"I believe you," Rin admitted, her lips pulling into a soft smile as her fingers wrapped around his, the demon reflecting her expression softly.
"Thank you," Sesshomaru murmured as he lowered his lips for a final kiss before he turned to leave her to her dreams, "and goodnight Rin, I look forward to our evening."
Sooo? How'd it go? Reviews please ^^
