Skyla POV
"You seem very nervous." I looked up from my perch on a rock, looking out on the lake to see Aragorn looking at me curiously. I shrugged. "Well… you know… I'm just a bit nervous about the darkness Legolas keeps talking about."I said evasively. It wasn't a lie- I was worried about the Uruk-Hai and how we would fare against them. But most of me was worried about Boromir- I hadn't really talked to him at all, but I knew that he shouldn't die. Aragorn sighed.
"You're worried about Arwen, aren't you?" I asked quietly. He looked surprised. Oops! He hadn't really talked about her… "How did you know about Arwen?" he asked suspiciously.
"Well, she was doing my hair and mentioned you. And also, the Evenstar necklace you have could probably only be given by a few elves. So… yeah!" I said, gaining confidence. He looked surprised. "Arwen spoke of me?" he asked.
"Well, we were talking about the council meeting and… she mentioned you, and I was asking about everyone." I ad-libbed. Improvisation could be such a helpful trait! He walked off and told Merry to go and get firewood.
"You are nervous about something else." I turned yet again and saw Legolas. It wasn't a question.
"Does it have something to do with what will happen?" he asked. I gave him an incredulous look. How did he know? "You have the same look on your face as when Gandalf…" he trailed off. Oh.
"Yeah! I just… I could try to change what happens, but other things could happen and we could end up dying!" I put my face in my hands.
"I… am very sorry that I was shouting at you about what happened in Moria. I did not realize how hard it was for you." I raised an eyebrow. Apologizing eh? Interesting…
"Well, as I said a long time ago, I'm all out of apologies." I said, crossing my arms and smiling a bit. He smiled back. Awe, we're having a moment! But then I had an idea. If I can go and stop Boromir from attacking Frodo, maybe I could change him from dying!
"I'll go and collect more firewood." I said, getting up and running off the way I had seen Frodo go, trying not to flail around in anxiety. As I ran, I listened for the sound of Boromir or Frodo.
"Frodo…Frodo? What have I done? … Frodo?" I heard Boromir. Racing over to him, I kneeled down next to the Gondorian who was lying on the ground, looking shocked.
"Listen, Boromir. It was the ring. The ring controlled you, making you get all evil. Come on, get up! There are creatures out here that won't pause to kill you." I told him, helping him up.
"I… I attacked him!" Boromir looked horrified. I could see how shaken up he was.
"Okay… listen to me… go back to camp and get everyone! I'll go find Frodo, okay?" I asked. He nodded, and stumbled off. I looked around. Where had he gone… stone eagles! Yes, that was it! I raced off, and finally saw him lying on the ground, stunned. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say…. he fell down!
"Frodo!" I exclaimed, reaching him.
"The ring… it took Boromir." he muttered. Poor guy!
"You have it, right?" I asked him worriedly. He froze and stared at me.
"Stay away!" he exclaimed, scooting away. Wow he really thought of me like that?!
"Dude, I have no obligation to take your ring. To me it looks like something you buy at the dollar store or from a creepy vendor in New York!" I raised an eyebrow, imagining Sauron as one of those creepy vendors… 'Oh, yes, this ring is MAGICAL! VERY MAGICAL! And you can have it for NO MONEY AT ALL!'
"Really?" he looked shocked. I nodded.
"I can prove it! I'll have my hand flat like this. Raise the ring above my hand. If I don't grab for it, I'll show that I feel no urge to have it!" I told him. Looking nervous, he raised it above my hand. I wrinkled my nose and looked at it. And it wasn't even that interesting either- just a golden band. The hobbit dropped the ring in my hand entirely and I blinked. Nothing.
"See? Nothing! I literally feel nothing towards this dumb old golden band. I think I might even have something like that at my house! And it's nothing at all- just an old family heirloom." I shrugged and handed it back to him. Suddenly, I heard Aragorn shout Frodo's name. I feel so special now! I watched as he made his way towards us.
"Frodo!" he called, obviously very worried about the hobbit. I raised an eyebrow.
"I wouldn't go too close, dude. You could try and take the ring like him like Boromir!" I warned him in my best 'death to all whom go near him' sort of voice.
"I swore to protect you!" he sounded hurt. Poor baby… strange mental image of Aragorn as a baby. STOP!
"Can you protect me from yourself?!" Frodo replied. He held up the ring. "Would you destroy it?" he asked. I saw how Aragorn's eyes seemed to glaze over when he saw the ring. The heir to Gondor reached for the ring… then closed Frodo's hand over it. Very nice!
"I would have gone with you until the end, into the very fires of Mordor." He told Frodo. Only fire? Are you scared of water or something!?
"Me too! Apparently Middle Earth is just so sexist that ya'll think I can't actually fight!" I glared at the two men having a bromance moment.
"I know. Look after the others, especially Sam. He will not understand." Frodo looked a bit baffled at my interruption, but I honestly didn't know if I could do what he was about to do. He was going to leave everyone, including his best friend, to go on a mission which he had a 2% chance of coming back from.
Aragorn suddenly stared at Frodo's sword. The thing was glowing blue. Not a light blue, but a freaking neon blue! I can't imagine hiding from orcs in a cave with the thing!
"Go, Frodo!" Aragorn shouted, pulling out his own sword. "Run!" and I watched as the one person that could save Middle Earth ran off into the woods.
"Skyla! Go alert everyone!" he shouted. I glared at him. "I'm not a messenger, jerk! Anyway, I already told Boromir to get everyone." I smarted off. He gave me a death glare back. I didn't back down and kept glaring. Finally, he blinked and looked up the hill. I did as well and almost suffered a heart attack. Uruk-Hai were standing there, lots and lots of them, with weapons and their scary faces.
"Hi?" I whimpered. I mean, these were full on monsters. The orcs had been freaky, yes, but they for some reason didn't scare me as much (probably because I'd seen them so often in the movies and got to make fun of their faces). The Uruk-Hai though… they were full on evil. And very tall with sharp, pointy weapons….
"I will hold them off! Go and bring everybody here!" Aragorn ordered.
"Like hell I am! Let me kick some bootie!" I yelled back. And then, the monsters roared and charged us. Damn it! I backed up a step, feeling my hands moisten with sweat and the sword become looser in my hand. Not all rainbows and unicorns now, huh? An Uruk-Hai raced over to me and tried to cut me in half. Catching his sword with mine, I pushed him back.
"Skyla, you need to find them so they know where to go!" Aragorn commanded.
"Fine!" I shouted, and after cutting off the one I was fighting's head, I raced, flailing, to where the others were.
Alice POV:
I watched as Skyla ran into the woods to 'collect firewood'. Something was going to happen, and I knew it. I dangled my feet in the water of the lake, trying to remember. I heard the sound of somebody walking over to me. Turning around, I grinned at Merry. He sat next to me.
"Where is Frodo?" he asked. I blinked and turned. Frodo wasn't there.
"Aragorn… where's Frodo…?" I called over. The ranger blinked and turned to look at where Frodo had been, and he froze at something. I looked that way, then also froze. Boromir's shield was there, but Boromir wasn't. Hmm… I don't think Boromir can go invisible…
"Damn it!" I growled. Of COURSE Skyla knew! I watched Aragorn run up the hill, and looked around for any other missing people. Nope. Everyone was silent as well, contemplating what could happen.
"So…" I muttered, but before I could continue, Boromir came running back, out of breath.
"Frodo… ring… Skyla…" he gasped, and I blinked.
"So you saw Frodo?" he nodded. "And something happened with his ring?" he nodded super hard. "And Skyla came?" he nodded again. "Did she tell you to come here?" another nod. "Is Frodo okay?" he shook his head. "Is he dead?!" he shook his head again. "Is he in trouble?" he shrugged. "Dude, have some water…"
"ALICE!" I heard a scream. I looked up and saw Skyla running down. "THERE ARE URUK-HAI AND ARAGORN'S ALL ALONE FIGHTING THEM AND HE TOLD ME I HAD TO COME HERE!" everyone shot up and grabbed their weapons.
"What about Frodo?" Legolas asked.
"He's okay, Aragorn told him to run." She was looking just as out of breath as Boromir.
"Where?" Gimli asked. She pointed behind her.
"Hill." She coughed. As the others (including Boromir who had gotten his breath back) zipped the way she had pointed. I patted her head.
"Somebody's down for the count." I joked. She glared at me.
"Like… hell… I… am…" she took a few more breaths, then stood straight up again.
"Well, my dear, shall we go fight?" I offered her my arm. She grinned.
"We shall… but not too fast." She begged, making me crack up.
As we got to the battle area, I froze. Lots of scary monsters. The only ones I had fought were orcs, but these were bigger and badder. THIS IS NOT A GOOD TIME TO WET MY PANTS ESPECIALLY SINCE I CAN'T JUST GO TO THE STORE TO BUY MORE!
"THEY'RE POKEMON... THEY'VE EVOLVED!" I shrieked very loudly. Skyla bit her lip to keep from laughing again, and we both ran into battle like the crazy people we were.
The Uruk-Hai were much stronger and tougher than the orcs had been. It was harder to cut through their skin, and they were much taller too. I was honestly freaking out inside my head, but used my newfound utter terror to kill.
"Skyla?!" I looked around, trying to find my friend. She was nowhere near me. It was like she had disappeared into the crowd of fighting. I called her name again, and looked around myself. No response was coming from anywhere. One moment she was next to me, the next she's gone! I turned and ran off the other direction, turning around in case I missed anything. I heard the clash and clangs of swords and shields meeting each other, but it wasn't just where everyone was fighting. It was… also in front of me.
Jogging forwards, I froze when I saw the Uruk-Hai coming at Merry and Pippin, while they looked like they were going to faint with fear. Before I could jump out, though, Boromir came racing out and he started fighting them all off. I ran over to Merry and Pippin and made sure no Uruk-Hai came from behind.
I heard the zing of an arrow. Expecting to see Legolas, I turned and froze when I realized it was the biggest, baddest of all the monsters. And he had just shot Boromir. I screamed loudly and raced over but he stood right back up and we kept fighting. Well… I guess he looks alright… But there was another arrow that embedded itself in his chest. I ran over and tried to help him, but he wouldn't stop.
"Get the halflings away!" he yelled. Nodding, I ran over to the two and was pulling them in the opposite direction when I heard the last zing. And looked in horror when I realized it had hit Boromir in the heart. The Uruk-Hai turned and looked at us. Pulling out my sword, I stood in front of the two hobbits, but something hit me, and everything went black.
Skyla POV
I had been scared as hell when I heard Alice shouting my name. But I couldn't stop fighting the huge creature that was trying to skin me! Finally able to cut off its head, I turned around and blinked. Alice wasn't there. Walking towards where she had been, I realized she must have gone the other way to look for me. But that's where Boromir is! If I could find them, not only could I find Alice, but I could maybe save Boromir! Running behind her footprints, I felt something cut my hand. Wincing in pain, I turned to the monster that had followed me. Glaring at him, I cut off his head for revenge, and looked at my hand. It wasn't too bad, so I just grabbed a leaf and wrapped it around the wound, which was probably not the cleanest idea.
Continuing after Alice's footprints, I came across a battle. I had no idea where Alice, Merry, or Pippin were, but I saw Boromir falling on the ground, arrows stuck in his chest. An Uruk-Hai walked over to finish him off, but I wasn't going to let that happen. Jumping the creature, I rolled off him and ducked his blow at my head. Kicking him in the legs, I smacked him on the head with my hilt. Then, while he was woozy, I stabbed his heart (or whatever they have in there…) and turned back to Boromir. Aragorn wasn't there yet, so I leaned down.
"Hey…" I whispered, looking at the arrows in his chest and shuddering.
"Where is Frodo?" he asked with fear. I sighed.
"First, he's fine. Second, you're the one I'm worried about! You have three flipping arrows stuck on you!" I kneeled down next to him.
"I tried to take the Ring from him…" Boromir whispered in horror. The guy needed to get past that and onto the fact that he was dying!
"So would any man! But you stopped yourself! An average man wouldn't have been able to kick himself out of it! You did! And you felt remorse! I know you were already battling it the whole trip, and somehow you held yourself back! I mean, honestly dude, you're making your way up to Chuck Norris!" I exclaimed. Sure, he hadn't been that nice sometimes, but I wasn't going to let him die thinking he was a jerk!
"Did you feel it?" he asked me. This was going to be awkward… not just that he asked me 'did you feel it' which could be taken in many different ways, but my answer...
"No, I didn't." I saw how he looked saddened at that. "But I think it's because I'm not a man, I'm a-" I flipped my hair dramatically and spoke in a British accent, "Lady! And Aragorn felt it! I know because I saw it in his eyes! I don't know about the others." I didn't know if I should try to pull out the arrows. Luckily for me, Aragorn came just in time and saw me leaning over him.
"What has happened?" he asked in horror. I sighed.
"Boromir sacrificed himself and got shot three times in the chest by the leader of the Uruk-Hai to protect Merry, Pippin, and Alice. And he kept fighting until the end." I inched back, ignoring the steward's son giving me the 'how did you know?!' look.
I walked around, looking for any sign of the hobbits or Alice. And I finally found something. Leaning down, I plucked a hairclip out of the leaves. It was Alice's. That means she was probably kidnapped too! I bit my lip. I turned back to where Aragorn was with Boromir. Biting my lip, I tried not to cry. I mean, the first time I saw the movie, I cried when he died. And now, I had actually known him!
"Boromir?" I realized my voice was high. "What happened to Alice?"
"She was hit in the head. The Uruk-Hai picked her and the little ones up and carried them off." He must have noticed my horrified look, because he looked even worse.
"It's not your fault! You kept the hobbits alive through it all, and Alice was just in the wrong place and the wrong time! Don't you die or anything thinking that!" I realized I was crying, and brushed my tears away. Walking over to where the boats had been, I sat and watched Frodo and Sam paddle off.
Staring into space blankly, my face was devoid of emotion. Alice told me I'd looked that way when my grandmother died, so shocked I couldn't even express the emotion. I didn't really think of anything, I just was a shell and my soul was probably running around screaming her face off and crying.
I heard the sound of the others approaching. I don't even know if they saw me, but they carried Boromir's body into one of the boats and lay him there. I blinked and realized they were about to push him off.
"Wait." They turned around in shock, obviously having no idea I was there. Walking forward as if in a trance, I stared at the Gondorian. I muttered a saying I had heard at a funeral once.
"" The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death."" (J.K. Rowling) I then backed up, and stared back into space, re-entering the trance I had been in before.
You could have saved him. You knew he was going to die, you should have saved him! Told him to watch out, taken out the guy with the bow and arrow, followed him, anything! Maybe he would still be here then, and we wouldn't have to go through all the pain we'll have to! I thought at myself angrily. I knew people were speaking, but I couldn't hear it, just a sort of buzz.
I'd like to say I stood up, shook out of my trance, and said something powerful. I didn't. I curled into a ball and cried silently, hating everything. I remembered when I had first saw him, pretending I was an elf. I remember how horrified he had looked when he realized he had actually tried to take the ring from Frodo. I remembered everything, how he had stopped Frodo from diving after Gandalf.
"Skyla? Skyla!" something was shaking me. I didn't know what, but I didn't care either. Shaking my head, I ignored the person. "Skyla, so be it, I will drop you in the river." I ignored the voice. Just leave me to die! I mentally grumbled. Suddenly, I was underwater. Breaking out of it, I swam up and glared at the amused guys.
"Flipping men." I muttered, getting out of the water and grabbing my pack.
"Well? If I'm ever going to see Alice again, we'd better go now!" I glared at them. As everyone took only what they needed and such, I sidled over to Gimli.
"Can I ask who dropped me in the river?" I asked sweetly. He raised an eyebrow.
"It was both Legolas and Aragorn, lass!" he grinned at me. I sent death glares at the two.
"Are you very mad at us?" Aragorn asked, amused.
"Silence… I kill you!" I hissed at him, pointing my finger in his face and walking away, leaving him bewildered.
"I have a feeling you are going to be ignoring them." The dwarf commented as I walked over to him.
"You know me so well, Gimli!" I exclaimed. Shunning powers… activate!
A/N: HEY! So I guess the first book/movie is over! *drama* BOROMIR DIED! I recently watched this with a friend (she had never seen it) and she burst into tears and hugged me super tightly when it happened. . YOU CAN LET GO NOW!
REVIEW! FOR THE PRECIOUS! XD
