Epilogue-
Seven Years Later…
"Mermaids, George?"
"Why not, Henry? Animals can be cross bred, so why can't people? Plus, sailors have been claiming to see mermaids for centuries. Some say that when a ship sinks inexplicably, it's because a mermaid's singing has hypnotized the captain and caused him to steer the ship into the rocks."
Henry just laughed and put down the day's newspaper, the headlines of which reported the disappearance of a local fishing vessel.
"You and Detective Murdoch are such sceptics! Close minded, that's what you are." George accused.
Henry scoffed.
"Speaking of the Detective, we should go dig out those case files he was asking for…" He started to stand.
"Wait a minute Henry," George said, "sit down for a second. I want to run something by you."
Henry did, giving his friend a suspicious look.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing. It's just that…well," he lowered his voice, "I'm going to ask Emily to marry me."
Henry's eyes widened in surprise.
"And I was going to ask you and the Detective to be groomsmen."
Henry didn't know what to say.
"George…I'd be honoured!" The two stood and shook hands. "And congratulations!"
"Thank you, Henry. I'm rather nervous, you know. I don't know how to bring it up. And when I get nervous, I'm not always the best with words…"
"May I make a suggestion?"
"What is it?"
"Don't do it while telling her your mermaid theory. You don't want her to realise you're insane until after she marries you!"
He grinned devilishly and darted away from his partner before George could give him a playful shove.
As they began sorting through the files they'd been assigned, Henry thought back to when he and George had first begun working together, and the animosity that had existed between them. Never in a million years, during those days, would he have pictured becoming George's best friend, and eventually, becoming a groomsman of his.
Henry knew that when George was married it would mean them spending less time together as friends and bachelors, but he wasn't worried.
Their friendship had withstood many things thus far: many long nights of stake outs; George's stint as acting detective while Murdoch was injured; Henry's injury in the terrorist bombing; and even the fact that Henry had a crush on Dr. Grace for a short time.
He had no doubt that they would continue to be friends for a long time, and looked forward to seeing where the next chapter in their lives would bring the dynamic pair.
"Maybe you should write something for her." Henry suggested after a while.
"Very funny."
"No, think about it. You have a real talent there, George. I think that Dr. Grace would really like it."
George looked thoughtful for a moment.
"You know Henry, you may be on to something! If I write everything I want to say down before hand, and let her read it, or I read it to her, I won't make a fool of myself!"
Henry smirked.
"Not as much of a fool, at least."
George picked a pencil up off the desk and chucked it across the table. Henry ducked, avoiding the projectile with a laugh.
Nope. Henry didn't think things would be changing any time soon.
