Chapter 9
Tori was transferred to the Erudite hospital. She was really sick and needed immediate care. At least as Tobias says. I haven't been able to see her and it is killing me. I'm not allowed to leave Dauntless, I'm supposed to be on bed rest, and am not even supposed to leave the compound at all.
I have been on bed rest alright, I only sit in bed. Tobias goes off for training and comes back and lets me cry into his shoulder. I haven't stopped crying. And not being able to see her makes it even worse. She was the one who told me who I was, Divergent. She protected me.
"I love you," I say to Tobias. "More than anyone. I don't know what I would do if I lost you." I say trying to hold back tears, but failing instantly.
"Shh, shh, I love you too Tris. More than my own life." He says sweetly, but with a reassuring tone.
I laugh and wipe away the tears, "I'm sorry, I'm just really upset, with the whole Tori situation. And not being able to see her, well. It's not good for me right now." I say laughing some more through my tears.
"About that, Tris. I talked to Christina and Eric, unfortunately. They gave you the okay to leave Dauntless to visit Tori, but only for a few hours," I stiffen when he says Eric, with recent events I haven't even thought about the night or dream, that happened nearly a week ago.
"What? Really, thank you!" I sit up and kiss him. I wrap my arms around his neck, I hold the kiss for a little longer and pull away. He grins crookedly and smiles at me.
"For you, anything," he kisses me on the forehead. I smile again.
"Well when can I see her?" I ask him excitedly.
He checks his watch, "the next train in 20 minutes, can you be ready by then?" He asks questionably.
"Yes!" I stand up and instantly fall back down forgetting about my injuries. Tobias catches me before I hit the floor.
"Woah there, calm down. I'll help you stand up. Then you can pick out some clothes and you can get dressed. Okay?" He asks maturely. I just shake my head in response. We walk over to my dresser and I pick out some black sweats and a black shirt. My arm is in a sling so I have to take that off, and take off my mesh shorts and tight tank top. I stand there in just a bra and under wear and struggle to pull on my shirt.
It's not new for me to stand in front of Tobias with no clothes on. We have lived together for a nearly a year. We have never gone farther than that though. I have wondered about it for a while now. He would never pressure me to do something I didn't want to do. The topic has never come up.
"Alright, I'm good." I say as I pull my arm in the sling. I kiss Tobias once again, and he puts his arm around my waist to support me.
"Okay let's go," Tobias says to me and we head out the door. We walk up the stairs, I struggle but don't complain. We are on the roof when I realize I can't jump off the building to the train. I stop. Tobias looks at me.
"Tris, don't worry. There is a spot you don't have to jump. I will just lift you up onto it. Okay?" I nod my head, and walk with him.
We wait for five minutes before we can see the train coming from the distance. The spot we stand in has no gap. Tobias jumps on first and pulls me on seconds later. I walk over to sit down, my ankle was starting to hurt, and I could feel a headache coming.
Tobias opens his arms and I lay in them comfortably because I have been in this position countless times this week and since we have been together.
We start to see the lights of the Erudite hospital. Tobias grabs me bridal style and jumps off with me. He lands softly, but my head still aches.
"Sorry," he whispers and kisses my hair before setting me down. He keeps his arm on my waist and once again helps me walk, well more like hobble, to the front doors of the Hospital.
We walk up to the perky looking blonde sitting at the front desk. She is signing of papers.
"We are here to see Tori Waldorf, she is in Hospice." Tobias says to the women who looks up and stares at Tobias for a second.
"Right this way," she says in a flirtatious voice. I clench my non-broken fist and I hear Tobias laugh under his breath.
"You look like you belong here sweetie, you're pretty banged up. Let me guess. Dauntless?" She asks addressing me first and then looking at Tobias's obvious black clothes.
"Yes," I say to her, in a rude voice. She must notice my anger and shuts up for the rest of the five minute walk to Tori's room.
When we enter the room Tori is lying in a normal hospital bed, but she doesn't look like Tori. She looks sick, really sick. I almost regret me decision to come. She is awake though and greets me as I walk in.
"Tris, oh my, how are you dear?" She asks me not even bothering to think about that question herself. She sounds horrible and by the pain on her face she can hardly mutter those words.
"I could ask you the same thing." I say with a shaky laugh. She smiles and motions me to come from my previous position in the door way to her bedside. I walk over, with Tobias still holding me, and grab a hold of her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"How are you? I'm sorry, I would have come sooner, but I was granted access to leave Dauntless till today. I'm sorry Tori, I'm so sorry," I say to her quietly. I try to hold back the tears that so desperately want to flow from my face. She gives another painful smile.
I hear some beeping from the monitor sitting by her bed, I look to Tobias and before I can ask what it is a nurse comes into the room. She checked the machine and a few other things then she turns to me and Tobias.
"I'm sorry but you too need to leave now, she is in need of an emergency operation." She says this hurriedly and rushes us out of the room. We walk out and wait in the hallway before several more nurses rush Tori out of her room and down the hallway through an entrance that says "Emergency Care Unit"
I turn to Tobias with a worried look, he just pulls me closer and we go to the waiting room. The perky blonde is there, and she turns her head at us as we walk in. She smiles and waves to us, more directly Tobias though.
We sit down on the blue chairs, Tobias said we can stay and wait, but he needs to call the compound first. I just nod, and he walks away to make the call.
I didn't even think before about how bad Tori could look. I was too excited
to see her. I don't know what I would do if I lost her. She has been like a guide to me, and has protected me. What would happen to me if she was gone? Who would take over the tattoo shop? I most likely would. I can do almost any tattoo now.
Tobias returns with a worried look. I glance up at him scared to hear his news. "Well, we are allowed to stay. I mean you. I have to get back to Dauntless, I'm sorry. I don't have to go, who cares if I lose my job, for you it's worth it." He says sitting down holding my hand.
I shake my head, "no it's alright. I can stay. You go, I have a phone and I'll call you if I need you." He smiles and squeezes my hand and kisses my lips. It is short and sweet, but still gives me a feeling I have never had with anyone before. When I pull away I look over to the perky blonde who seems upset, but not surprised.
I watch Tobias walk out the door and into the setting of the sun. I look at my phone, 9:00pm. I realize despite not having done anything all day, I'm tired. I drift off to sleep in a chair.
I am awoken by someone shaking my shoulder. "Ma'am? Hello I'm the nurse from earlier. Your friend is stable, but in poor condition. You might want to speak to her." The nurse says, she was the nurse who originally rushed me and Tobias out of Tori's room.
"Yes, thank you." I say to the nurse.
"Miss, would you like some crutches? Your ankle looks pretty bad," she asks me, I shake my head no. My ankle is fine, I can limp.
We walk down to a different room, not the same one Tori had been in previously. I walk in and don't even recognize her. She is hooked up to so many tubes and looks even worse than before.
"Hi," I say quietly as I walk in the room. Tori doesn't say anything but I can see a hint of a smile play across her lips. I walk over and grab her hand softly, it feels so fragile.
"So, I'm glad I finally got to see you. I have missed you ever since I woke up from my coma. I know the shop has been closed down since you left, all those poor tattoo-less Dauntless." I can tell she is laughing on the inside. I smile. I notice her breathing tube, she can't breathe on her own. There are wires connected to every part of her body.
I grab a nearby chair and sit, not letting go of her hand. She closes her eyes.
I hear her mutter two words, "Goodbye Tris," before the heart monitor next to her beeps once again, signaling no heartbeat. I am stunned for a moment. The millions of tears I have cried this week don't do this moment justice.
The nurse comes in and tells me the news I already know. Tori is gone. Although, when she speaks the words it makes it harder. She takes me out of the room. She lets me sit in the waiting room.
I grab my phone and call Tobias. He answers before the first ring is over. "Hello, Tris? Are you alright?" He asks me.
Between sobs I manage, "She, Tori, gone," Tobias gets the message.
"I'll be right there." He says and hangs up the phone. I manage to put my hands in my face and continue sobbing. I don't know how much time passed, but I feel someone pick me up and calm me down. I feel myself fall into a troubled sleep.
