Oblivious – Dog Park – (A McRoll in the REAL World Story)

McGarrett/Rollins Residence
Saturday morning
Catherine held out Steve's cell as he was coming into the house after tossing a ball around the beach with Cammie, who was at his heels. "Here, it's Grace."
Steve dropped his towel over a kitchen chair and took the phone. "Thanks. Cammie swam a mile this morning." He said with a proud grin before turning his attention to the call.
As Steve said, "Hey, Gracie!" Catherine grabbed his discarded towel and ran it over the dog's damp fur. She noticed his voice soften as he continued with, "No we don't have plans. Ya know what, Sweetheart, are you sure you don't want to go to the regular park and just bring the dogs? Or you can come here with Scout and they can play on the beach."
Catherine looked at him questioningly. She thought he was actually going to turn down a request from Grace. Then she heard him sigh. "For charity, huh? The Humane Society Dog Park over on Waialae. Got it. Okay. We'll see you later." Steve looked at Catherine who was smiling at him as he hung up. "What?"
"Nothing. For a minute there, I thought you were about to say no to Grace." She grinned.
"I've said no to Gracie." Steve grumbled, but a half-smile gave him away.
"Yes. Yes, you have." Catherine handed him a water bottle and placed a quick kiss on his lips. "When she wanted to sky dive with you or go repelling, because you knew Danny would kill you. You've never said no if she's asked for something reasonable."
Steve shrugged. He knew he was busted. "We're going to the dog park."
"So I gathered. For charity?"
"Yeah, the Humane Society is having a fundraiser. Gracie was supposed to go with her friend's family, but the kid and the mom are down with a stomach bug. She raised eighty seven dollars at school and she really wants to go make her donation. She's bringing Scout. Danny's got plans and he offered to break them but she asked to call us first. He'll meet us there to drop her and Scout off and I told her we'd drive them home. She wants us to bring Cammie."
At the sound of her name, Cammie looked at Steve expectantly.
"Hear that? We're going to the park." Catherine said and the dog wagged her tail happily. "Let's feed you and we'll get going." She turned to Steve and looked at him with a head tilt. "Didn't you want to go?"
"No, it's not that, we just haven't taken her to a dog park before, and … what if she doesn't like it? She's never been around that many dogs." He shrugged. "Guess we'll find out, though. I'll be down in ten." Steve kissed her, ruffled the dog's fur and trotted upstairs to change while Catherine shook her head and grinned at Steve's concern that the dog he'd initially agreed to take home 'for a few days' wouldn't like the dog park.

Dog Park
Noon
After Catherine had walked Grace and her dog, Scout around the 'sponsor's circle' and Grace made her donation to the Humane Society, Steve sat on a bench watching the dogs play while the girls took a quick bathroom break. Cammie seemed to be enjoying herself and Steve was smiling when Grace came back and gave him a hug. "Thanks again for coming today, Uncle Steve. Aunty Cath and I are gonna get lunch at the food stand. What do you want?"
"Here," Steve pulled two twenties out of his wallet. "Tell Catherine I'll have whatever she's getting and a water. Get a couple of liter bottles for the dogs, too. We can't bring the food in here, so when you get back, we'll leash the dogs and take them over by the water to eat, okay?"
"Great!" Grace took the money and bent to kiss her dog on the head. "Be good for Uncle Steve, play nice with your new cousin!" She ran off to meet Catherine who was waiting for her outside the fence.
Grace and Catherine weren't gone five minutes when Steve called Cammie, who immediately loped over and sat at his feet. He'd stooped to pet her when he heard "That's a very pretty dog, and smart."
Steve stood, smile in place at the complement of Cammie, and said, "Thanks."
"What is she?"
"A Bernese-Shepherd mix. She's very smart." Steve said proudly and looked up.
A blond in her mid twenties was twirling a lock of hair around her finger and smiling. "That's great. She suits you. Hot guys with little fluffy dogs look silly." She said with a giggle.
Steve had no idea how to answer that, so he didn't. He scrutinized the group of dogs playing in the fenced area and asked, "Which one is your dog?"
"Oh! I don't have a big dog. Mine's right here." She tapped the enormous tote she was carrying and a little dog popped its head out and looked quizzically at Steve. "This is Leopard. Say hi, Leopard." She instructed. The dog wore a leopard-print collar with cutouts and rhinestones. "Where are my manners, I'm Missy." She held out her perfectly manicured hand.
Steve took the offered hand and shook it, thinking that Leopard was possibly the most poorly named dog ever. "Steve McGarrett."
"Oh," She giggled "I know your name. You're the head of Five-O silly, everyone knows your name."
Missy's grip was limp, but she held on just long enough to make a handshake between strangers uncomfortable. Steve retracted his hand as quickly as possible without yanking it away.
"I doubt that." Steve retorted, his eyes scanning the park in the direction Catherine and Gracie had gone.
"Well I don't." Missy gave him a dazzling smile. "The task force is like, always in the papers and they even made that TV show based on it." She winked conspiratorially. "You know, with the really hot actors? I didn't know what a task force was till I saw you do an interview on TV. You're, like, even better looking than the guy who plays the lead." She leaned closer. "You know, if you ever need a dog sitter, because you're working on an exciting crime, I'd be happy to watch her for you." Missy indicated Cammie, who was resting at Steve's feet.
When Missy punctuated her offer by placing a hand on Steve's forearm, he and Missy looked down simultaneously, because Cammie stood and low a rumble sounded in her throat.
"Oh. Is she growling?" Missy's nose wrinkled.
"She never does that." Steve bent to run a hand through Cammie's soft, thick fur. She pressed into his hand but her eyes remained fixed on the woman who'd touched her human and caused his body posture to become tense. Cammie moved to place herself between Steve and the stranger, and Leopard let out a yap.
"Oh I think she's worried because your ... dog is sooo big." Missy purred, but the little dog continued to yap in the tote.
"Looks like she needs a bathroom break." Steve noted with a glance at the little tan dog who he felt kind of sorry for, wearing that hideous collar and saddled with that ridiculous name.
"You're so perceptive! Looks like she does." Missy looked reluctantly at Steve. "I guess I should take her to the potty area." She fished out a card. "Here. If you ever need a dog walker, or sitter, or … anything. Give me a call."
"We have one, but thanks." Steve shook his head, but she pressed the card into his hand.

Missy began to walk away just as Catherine walked up. Looking at Steve with an amused grin, Cath said, "Hi." She noted Missy's crestfallen expression when Steve gave her an easy smile and his hand slid to the small of her back.
"Hi, where'd you and Gracie go to get the food, home?" Steve teased, but he looked relieved.
"There was a line." Catherine smiled "Who's your friend?"
"She wanted to know if we needed a dog sitter. But she doesn't seem to even like big dogs. She had this little dog with a ridiculous name…" He shook his head with disdain before he whistled for Grace's dog who came trotting up. "Leash him, please?" Steve passed a leash to Catherine, who leashed Scout while he leashed Cammie. They proceeded to leave the dog park area and walk toward Grace who was sitting a few yards away at a picnic table with the food.
Steve tossed Missy's card in the trash and Catherine raised a brow. "Too flighty, I'd never hire a flighty dog sitter. Besides, Cammie made a growly noise, she didn't like her."
"Gee, I'm sure she was crushed that Cammie didn't like her."
"Cath…" He knew from her tone she was about to tease him. They'd reached the picnic table where Grace heard the last part of their conversation.
"Uncle Steve, that girl thought you were cute, she didn't care about Cammie!" Grace giggled.
Catherine burst out laughing at Steve's look.
"She offered to dog sit, Gracie. Don't let your father and Aunt warp your perspective." He smiled but Grace just shook her head and unwrapped her lunch.
"Let's see," Catherine ticked off on her fingers as Steve bit into his shrimp wrap. "This one offered to walk the dog, the girl at the car-wash offered to come to our house to detail your truck, that hairdresser at the crime scene on Monday offered to cut your hair, free, anytime you want … because it's their ... civic duty." Grace giggled and Steve grumbled.
"Oblivious." When Catherine placed a kiss on his cheek, Steve grinned.
Cath could tease him as much as she wanted because she only pointed out when he missed stuff like that to bust him. She never got jealous, because she knew he'd never give her reason to. "Not about everything." He whispered while Grace was distracted by giving each of the dogs a bowl of water.
"Not about anything that counts." Catherine smiled and linked their fingers as a sparkle lit her eyes. "Besides, I wouldn't want you any other way."
