Epilogue

The two weeks had passed by slowly, much to Naru's displeasure. Mai, on the other hand, had lived in luxury for that short time. While Naru did the shopping (with her help sometimes) and the laborious chores, Mai ate, slept, and occasionally picked on him. The problem, however, had little to do with the two weeks they spent together, but more with the date she was expected to turn back.

She didn't.

In fact, this day was the second day she had yet to revert back – it was long overdue. Unfortunately, neither Lin nor Naru knew the reason for this. Lin spent the last day going over the report of the Tanemura case to decipher any code Eiko may have mentioned. Mai was growing anxious by the day. Naru continued to stay at her place.

"Lin-san will figure this out," Ayako assured a moody Mai. The brunette pouted in unhappiness, fiddling with her toes. There was nothing she could do. The door opened and both Lin and Naru entered, carrying some things. Mai, curious, clambered off the couch and followed Naru and Lin to the dining table. Lin set the things up and Mai realised what this was.

A séance.

"Who are you calling?" she asked, with a babyish lilt.

"Tanemura-san," Lin responded, not breaking in his movements. "Maybe she could give us a clue."

Mai watched as Lin chanted in an unfamiliar language, watched as mist gathered above her dining, and watched as Eiko took form, the familiar grin on her face.

"Hi!" she said with a wave. "What do you need?"

"It's about—" Lin was cut off but Yasu.

"Eiko-san!"

"Yasu-chin!"

"I've missed you," Yasu wailed theatrically. "It's so hard to throw Naru and Mai together! You don't know how much I've suffered!"

"Aw," she said sympathetically. "I feel you, Yasu-chin! I get it! I'll help you!"

"Ahem," Naru coughed. "Can we get to the point?"

"Sure."

"How can we turn Mai back?"

"Oh," Eiko said with a small laugh. "Whoops! My bad."

Mai glowered.

"Loosen up, missy," Eiko said, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. Her eyes glinted mischievously and she said dramatically, "If you want to turn back, you need to get a kiss from your true love."

Mai jerked back.

"But I'm surprised," Eiko said to no-one in particular. "I pranked Naru-Naru, not Mai-chan."

"Well," Yasu said. "Naru almost died so Mai decided to go all heroic and take your parting gift upon herself."

"Ah, youthful love."

Yasu laughed upon seeing Mai's scandalised face.

"Well, you heard the woman," Ayako said, nudging Naru. "Pucker up."

"No."

Mai was extremely tempted to kick him in the shin.

"Just on the cheek, then," Yasu attempted to compromise.

"No."

"For god's sake, Naru," Mai snapped. "Just kiss me already!"

Without waiting for his reaction, she climbed up on a chair, grabbed Naru by his shirt collar and kissed him full on the mouth. The transformation back was nothing dramatic. She simply grew back. It took about five seconds. Mai, and Yasu, were not impressed.

Back to normal, Mai jumped down from the chair with glee. She could've looked like a madman, but in truth she was simply celebrating. The others shared her excitement as well. Naru, on the other hand, was sporting a bright red blush. Lin snorted. Eiko cackled loudly at what she'd just witnessed, and at Naru.

"Well," Eiko said, wiping a tear away. "I should be leaving now."

Upon seeing Yasu's forlorn expression, she said, "Don't fret, my dear accomplice. Mai is rather daring." She then added in a hushed whisper, though it was still loud enough to be heard by the people in the room, "Madoka's also planning something else so no worries!"

He cheered up instantly while the rest groaned.

She left.

"So, Naru, you were quite red," Mai teased.

He raised an eyebrow at her.

"Says the one who sexually assaulted me," he said nonchalantly.

She flushed.

"I did not!"

"Yeah, you did," Ayako murmured, unhelpfully.

Mai flinched.

"But since it seems like you like me so much, considering the past two months of assault and harassment I received from you when I was at my most vulnerable"—Mai heavily denied it—"I guess I'll have to do something to satiate your…urges."

Mai was not pleased.

"I don't—"

Naru cut her off by kissing her. He released her with a smirk.

"I'd rather kiss the sixteen-year-old Mai," he said, "even if you're only an A-cup."

Mai blushed terribly and scowled.

"I'll kill you, you insufferable jerk!"

END

Many have expressed their sadness over the abrupt ending so I decided to write up this epilogue. Hardly fluffy, methinks, but it should be entertaining enough, and it's the most romance you're gonna see in Baby Steps. See you guys over at the other story! :D
