Chapter 10: What an awkward situation.

Walter Elias Psychiatric Center

Mirage's Office

Elsa stood there glued to the floor. She wanted nothing more than to disappear in this very moment. Anna was right there, just across the room. Elsa could feel her teal eyes burning a hole through her head. What was she going to do?

Just then, Anna's soft voice spoke out again. "I know this is probably super uncomfortable-,"

"Yeah, no kidding," Elsa snapped, effectively cutting Anna off.

Unbeknownst to her blonde counterpart, the tone caused Anna to flinch. She was nervous, very nervous actually. The young nurse had no idea how to go about approaching the other woman.

"Look, I didn't know they were going to bring you in here…I just wanted to get some answers and the next thing I know, here you are. I know you don't like talking to anyone other than Mirage, so I'm more than willing to sit here in silence for the next forty-one minutes," rushed the redhead.

Anna turned her head to face the desk when Elsa spoke out to her. "What answers?"

The redhead kept her gaze in front of her. In reality she wasn't ready to really face Elsa. There were so many conflicting feelings swirling inside her; gratitude, nervousness, happiness, fear and possibly a few others.

"I wanted to know why you saved me. I figured since you don't talk to anyone, Mirage would be the best person to ask."

"I…I can answer your questions…I can try to at least, but I need you to do something for me in return," replied the blonde.

Anna shifted in her seat. "What would you need me to do?"

Elsa shook her head. "You have to agree first."

"That's a little unorthodox don't you think? I mean, if I agree now, what's to stop you from not answering my questions?"

"What's to stop you from keeping your promise?" The blonde retorted.

"Toosh. You've got me there."

Elsa raised a questioning eyebrow. "Don't you mean touché?"

"Exactly, isn't that what I said?" The young nurse questioned.

Elsa steeled herself and slowly made her way over to the side of the room that Anna was currently occupying. The redhead did her best to not appear surprised or nervous. It seemed to work because her counterpart never ceased her approach. Once on the other side of the room, Elsa stood a few feet away from Anna.

"Would you like to sit down?"

The blonde never looked at the nurse, but nodded her head and sat in the seat next to Anna's.

"So… will you do it? Keep your promise?" Elsa questioned.

"It's a tentative yes for now. I reserve the right to retract my agreement, deal?"

"Deal," the blonde stated while keeping her gaze averted. "So, questions?"

Anna audibly gulped. "Right, uh…well, um…You saved me the other day. You didn't have to, but you did. And I know you don't really like to interact with other people, but the fact that you did what you did seemed a little out of the ordinary, not that I'm not grateful! Man am I ever grateful, but you—"

The blonde scrunched up her face at Anna's rant. Turning her head, she finally came face to face with the redhead for the first time since entering the room. Anna's spiel came to a screeching halt as she finally got a good look at the fair-haired resident. Her teal eyes immediately locked onto the bruise that marred the resident's skin, but that took a back seat to everything else she noticed. The light spilling into the room accentuated Elsa's fair hair and skin. It also highlighted the resident's ice-blue eyes, which Anna was now staring at.

Elsa cleared her throat. "Are…you ok?"

As if a switch went off in her head, Elsa quickly brought her hand up to cover her black eye.

The redhead shook herself out of her stupor. "Um, yes…YES! I'm fine, it's just…I've…I've never really noticed how blue your eyes actually are. They're amazing," she continued with a tilt of her head.

The unexpected compliment caused a crack in the resident's icy exterior. A look of surprise, as well as a light blush crept across her features. This time, it was Anna who averted her eyes. Suddenly she found everything else in the room way more interesting than her counterpart.

"Oh god, oh man, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. That wasn't my intention. I do this stupid thing where I don't think before I speak or act and it all comes out like word vomit. At least it's not actual vomit, because I don't think-"

"She's a bully," the redhead's rant was cut off by a soft voice.

Anna picked her head up to look at Elsa, only to find the other woman looking back at her with a stoic expression. Curious teal eyes searched for any hint of discomfort, but found nothing.

"What was that?"

"Shego, she's a bully. Always has been. She talks a big game, but can back it up. So she walks around like she owns everything and everyone. It's annoying to say the least," Elsa continued.

The redheaded nodded her understanding. "I see, so she picks on everyone huh? Not just redheads?"

"She hates redheads specifically, but to answer your question, yes. She picks on everyone."

"So…and I don't want to sound ungrateful, but why did you save me? You really didn't have to. You went out of your way."

Elsa shrugged her shoulders and looked past Anna. "I guess I wanted to see her finally get a taste of what she dishes out."

"Well thank you again anyway. I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have made it out alive if it weren't for you."

The young nurse took the opportunity to check the time. They still had twenty-five minutes left until Mirage returned. Elsa's gaze had wandered off into the room, leaving Anna to shift uncomfortably in her seat. The ruffling of clothes against the seat material caused steel-blue eyes to snap back to the other occupant of the room. Anna was desperately trying to situate herself without being too distracting, but was failing miserably at both.

"Did you have any more questions," the blonde asked, attempting to settle the other woman.

"Well of course I have more questions, but I figured I shouldn't bother you with stupid things that you probably don't want to answer."

"I'll be the judge of that. Ask now because most people would kill to be in your position right now."

Anna raised an eyebrow at the declaration then turned her body to face the fair-haired patient.

"Ok, where are you from?"

The question threw Elsa off, she hadn't been expecting that. A brief look of both shock and confusion etched its way onto the blonde's face, before she swiftly returned to being unreadable.

"Really, that's your question?"

"Well, yeah. You said I could ask."

"I know, but normally people would ask me how my powers work or why I'm so closed off, or something. You haven't even said anything about my eye!"

"Oh, I don't care about any of that. I mean, I do care, but I'm not going to pry. That's personal and if you want to share it, you will, but it's not up to me to force you to share it. I want to know about you, that's all," the nurse stated soundly. "As for your eye, well…I was there, remember?"

Elsa was floored. In all the years she'd been at the institute, no one had attempted to get to know her. No one except Mirage and by then, it'd been too late. By then the young blonde had already shut herself off from everyone.

"Thank you…Flåm."

"Gesundheit."

The blonde rushed to stifle a giggle, "I didn't sneeze. You asked where I'm from. I'm from Flåm."

"Flam? Isn't that like…a caramel pudding dessert or something?"

"You're thinking of flan. I said Flåm. It's a village in Norway…well; it's not called that anymore. They changed the name a few years back, it's now called Arendelle I believe."

Anna propped her head onto her hand and leant against the seat. "How long have you been away from your home? Do you miss it at all? Does it get really cold? What's it like?"

"You really do have a lot of questions don't you?"

The redhead nodded.

"I've been away ever since I was young. I miss it every single day. It's not so bad, at least I don't think it is. Special circumstances and all," Elsa wiggled her fingers in front of her face. "The cold never bothered me much. As for what it's like…I'd have to answer that another day, because we simply wouldn't have enough time, but to answer in short; it's beautiful."

"Wow…it sounds amazing. Wait, hold on. Because of your powers, you're saying you're not affected by the cold?"

Elsa shook her head. "Nope. Not at all."

"Well that's ferociously unfair," Anna huffed while crossing her arms.

The blonde found the action amusing. She visibly relaxed in her seat, but not completely. A part of her was still on guard.

"You never told me what you wanted me to do for you, in return for answering my questions."

"You're still willing to uphold that?"

"Of course! I promised didn't I? A promise is a promise. So what do you want me to do?"

A slight blush crept across Elsa's face again. She wasn't sure if she could trust the redhead or not, but she had to do something. Mirage was right, nothing would change if she didn't, so she decided to make a change.

"Will you be my secondary nurse?"

For the first time in a long time, Anna was at a loss for words. Elsa just requested a secondary nurse. No…she requested ANNA to be her secondary nurse. That has to be a big deal, right? It had to be, no one worked with Elsa. The blonde had made it apparently clear that she wanted nothing to do with any of the other staff. However, here she was, asking for Anna's help.

The long silence caused nervousness within the fair-haired resident. Maybe asking Anna was a mistake, perhaps she should have never considered it. It was a foolish idea to think someone would want to help her, right? But she had to try, it was worth a shot.

Elsa shifted uncomfortably in her seat, "You don't have to. I understand if you don't want to-"

Anna snapped out of her musings when she heard the other woman speak. She was attempting to withdraw her request. No way was she letting that happen.

"-I'll do it!" She blurted out, effectively cutting Elsa off.

Unfazed by the interruption itself, the blonde quirked an eyebrow at her counterpart. "You will?"

"Of course I will! How else will I learn about Flan, Norway?"

Before the resident could respond, the office door swung open and Mirage walked in. Her green eyes shifted between the two women sitting in her office. Everything seemed…fine. She wasn't sure what she was expecting, but this was a pleasant surprise.

"Time's up Ms. Andersen. Elsa, Dash is waiting outside to escort you back to your room. I'll be by later to check in with you."

Wordlessly the blonde stood up and made her way towards the exit. Before leaving, she paused in the doorway and looked over her shoulder at the redhead.

"It's Flåm," she stated, punctuating the 'M'. "Have a good evening Ms. Andersen."

With that, Elsa walked out of the room. A smile graced Anna's features as she took in the small bit of information what was just given…again. Mirage witnessed the interaction with her own eyes, and she was glad she did, because had she not, she would have never believed it. Elsa had divulged personal information about herself, willingly. Almost effortlessly.

Green eyes surveyed the young nurse sitting across the room. She managed to do in a few minutes, what others couldn't do in a few months. Yes, this was definitely worth exploring. Perhaps, there was hope after all.

"Well, all seems to have gone well. Would you agree Ms. Andersen?" Mirage questioned.

"I guess so," the redhead stated, giving her full attention to her boss.

Mirage strode over to her desk and took her seat. "In all the years I've known Elsa to be here, not once has she told a single person anything about herself. I just witnessed her telling you about her hometown. That's impressive."

"I don't think impressive is the word I'd use."

"Did you get the answers to your questions?"

"I did, she was very helpful with that…ma'am, may I make a request?"

The senior nurse folded her hands atop her desk, intrigued by the sudden change in topic. She nodded her head and waited for the young woman to continue.

Anna suppressed the urge to audibly swallow. " If I may, and I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries by doing so, but can I put in a request…to be Elsa's secondary nurse?"

Mirage was unprepared for the question, and it briefly showed on her face. She quickly composed herself before fully facing her employee. She had to admit it, she did right by hiring Anna, the girl was ambitious.

"I don't know if that's such a wise idea Anna –"

"-It wasn't my idea!" the redhead exclaimed, cutting Mirage off. "It was Elsa's."

That did it. That was the statement that floored the older nurse. No, she didn't know what to expect by allowing the two women to speak to one another earlier, but this was not it. In no way, shape, or form, did she expect to hear that Elsa, the Ice Queen of Walter Elias Psychiatric Center, requesting a second nurse. Oh yes, hiring Anna was definitely one of her best choices.
