He took off again in the direction of the street and this time all Matt could do was watch as a car barely stopped before hitting him.
"BEN!" Matt ran into the street and collected a sobbing Ben into his arms.
Hearing all the commotion everyone in the backyard had come to see what was going on.
"Is he alright?" A man quickly got out of the car.
Matt held Ben close as the boy sobbed; physically he wasn't hurt but he needed to be taken to the hospital; Matt didn't want him trying to hurt himself or anyone else again.
"He'll be alright," Matt finally responded as Gabby rushed towards him.
"Thank you so much for stopping," Gabriela turned to the driver, "I don't know how to repay you."
"I have two grown children and three grandkids; I know sometimes you can take your eye off them for a second and they're gone."
"Yes," Matt agreed as he continued to soothe Ben.
"And you don't need to thank me; I'm just glad the little guy's okay."
"Fred," Antonio approached the elderly man who lived around the corner, "At least let us have you and Catherine over for dinner."
"We don't want to intrude."
"You wouldn't be intruding at all."
"Well okay then," Fred nodded, "I'll just go home and get Catherine and well be back."
Once Fred had driven off Gabby and Matt walked back to the front lawn.
"Auntie Gabby!" Ben finally lifted his head only to reveal his red and swollen eyes, "Auntie Gabby I'm scared," He reached out for her.
"We're going to get you help Ben," Gabriela kissed the top of his head.
"I'm taking him to the children's hospital," Matt mouthed to his wife, "See if he can see an on-call Child-Psychologist."
"Good idea, I'll go with you.
"Gabby-
"I'm going Matt. End of discussion."
"Antonio, Jackie," Gabby motioned for her brother and sister in-law to follow her away from the group.
"Matt and I are going to take Ben to the children's hospital, do you think you could watch Griffin."
"Of course, are you taking Lucas?" Jackie asked.
"Yeah, I'm not ready to be away from him for very long yet. When I went shopping yesterday I called Matt every fifteen minutes checking in and I was only gone less then an hour."
"That's normal," Jackie assured her.
"You know what; Samantha's Father is the Dean of the hospital. I bet he'd be able to help you; great guy; fantastic family. Samantha's been Carla's best friend since they were in Kindergarten. I'll see if I can reach him," Antonio took his cell phone out of his pocket.
"Thanks Antonio," Gabby gave her brother an appreciated pat on the shoulder.
"Griffin," Gabby walked up to the boy and put her hand on his shoulder, "I need to talk to you for a minute."
"Is Ben going to be okay?" Griffin asked worry evident in his voice.
"We're going to do everything we can to make sure he is."
"Is he like that because of what Mom did?" Griffin asked quietly. "Because I don't want him to get really hurt."
"Uncle Matt and I are talking to your mother and you boys are both going to talk to some doctors; okay just like we talked about. We want to make sure everybody's okay."
"Do I have to stay here?" Griffin asked as Lucas' cries could be heard as he woke up.
"Yeah bud we'd really appreciate it."
"Okay;" Griffin nodded; he didn't really understand why he needed to stay but he knew that if he argued with Gabby it would just make her more stressed out; and he didn't want that.
"Come here," Gabby pulled him into a side hug and kissed his hair.
"Waaa!" Lucas' cries got louder and the two week old started kicking his feet.
"Okay," Gabriela soothed as she turned to walk to the backyard where she had his baby bag.
"Here Aunt Gabby!" Carla suddenly called her name as she ran from the backyard carrying it; once the eleven year old got closer she said, "Samantha and I heard Lucas cry; we thought you'd need this."
"Well that was very mature of you," Gabby praised, "I'm very impressed." She opened the baby bag and got out the blanket to cover herself when she fed Lucas.
"Auntie Gabby!" Ben ran to her and attacked himself to her leg, "I don't want to go to the hospital! Don't make me go!"
"Ben," Gabriela wanted to be mad at the boy as his force when he ran into her could have caused Lucas to choke as he ate; she knew though that he didn't need to be lectured; right now he needed her full un-divided attention; which she could not give him as long as Lucas needed to be fed every hour or two.
"You know," Samantha looked at Ben, "My Dad is in charge of the entire children's hospital and I know almost all of the doctors and nurses."
"You do?" Ben turned his gaze towards her, "Are they nice?"
"You bet they are; and they all love kids! I bet if they knew you were my friend they'd be extra nice to you."
"See Ben there's nothing to worry about," Gabby reassured him, "Antonio called Samantha's father and he's going to talk to you and introduce you to some nice doctors."
"Can you stay with me?" Ben looked up at her a pleading look in his eyes.
"Of course I can," Gabriela squeezed his hand gently. "Now are you ready to go?" She adjusted Lucas in her arms after she had finished burping him.
"I guess," He watched as Lucas' eyes fluttered open and closed and he was soon sound asleep in Gabby's arms.
Ben held tightly onto Gabby's hand as they walked into the Chicago Children's hospital and towards the main desk.
"We have an apportionment with Dean George Turner," Matt told the nurse sitting at the reception desk.
"Ah," She smiled, "You must be Mr. Casey. Dr. Turner's expecting you; his office is on the third floor to your left. You'll have to check in once your there as well but I'll call up and tell them you're coming."
"Thank you."
"Auntie Gabby," Tears began forming in Ben's eyes as he gripped Gabriela's hand even tighter then before, "Do you really promise you won't leave?"
"Ben I'll stay with you as long as I can alright."
"But I don't want you to ever leave."
"Well Ben the doctors might want to talk to you all by yourself."
"No!" Ben shook his head, "I don't want to leave you!"
Just then, as the elevator reached the third floor Lucas awoke and began flailing his arms and screaming at the top of his little lungs.
"Oh," Matt looked down at his son, "What's wrong little man?"
"I think he needs to be changed!" Ben plugged his nose.
"I'll go and change him; I'll meet you guys in Dr. Turner's office," Matt walked to find a washroom.
"Auntie Gabby," Ben pointed to a sign up ahead on an office door, "It says Dr. Turner."
"Yes it does; very good spotting," She let him open the door and walking into a small waiting room they were greeted by a man in a suit and lab coat.
"You must be my special visitor Ben," He knelt down to Ben's level and stuck out is hand, "My names Dr. George Turner."
Ben didn't remover himself from Gabby's side.
"I'm Gabriela Dawson-Casey; you talked to my brother Antonio on the phone; Thank you for agreeing to see us on such short notice."
"Anything for such good friends. Your brother and his wife have been so kind to us over the years; this was the least I could do."
"My husband should be along shortly, he's just changing our infant son."
"Ah yes well I brought another doctor in to meet with you and your husband and I thought that I could talk to Ben."
"No!" Ben shook his head, "I don't want to leave Auntie Gabby!"
"Ben, I'm just going to be in another room; I'm not going to leave you."
"I don't want you to go!" He cried.
"Okay Ben," Dr. Turner spoke up, "You can stay with your Aunt if you would like but I think you'd like it more with me. See the room I was going to take you to has lots of games and toys."
"Why can't Auntie Gabby come?"
"Well you see Auntie Gabby and Uncle Matt are going to be talking to another doctor about ways we can help you get better. I thought it might be good for you to play with some toys and draw instead of sitting in."
"Ben that sounds like fun," Gabby encouraged him, "You don't want to listen to some boring meeting do you?"
"Can Lucas come?"
"Well I think Lucas is a little bit to young but that was very nice of you to ask."
"But I won't hurt him!"
"Ben I'd feel better if he stayed with me."
Ben pouted, "That's not fair."
"What's not fair Ben?" Gabriela asked just as Matt and another doctor, this one much younger walked into the room.
"See!" Ben pointed to Lucas who was now awake and alert, "He's not sleeping! Why can't he come with me?"
"Ben," Gabriela couldn't figure out why Ben all of a sudden wanted to be with Lucas, "Lucas is only a baby; he can't play with toys yet."
"No!" Ben yelled, "It's not fair!"
"Hey, hey," Dr. Turner grabbed Ben's attention, "You seem to be frustrated; why don't we go into this room and paint a picture."
"No!" Ben shook his head.
"Well how about bouncy balls, do you like bouncing balls?"
"You have those?"
"Oh yeah;" Dr. Turner held out his hand, "We have lots of different kind of balls to play with. Why don't we go now?"
"Well," Ben looked up at Gabby for permission, "I guess I could go. Are you sure you're not going to leave Auntie Casey?"
"I promise,"
"Okay," Ben took Dr. Turner's hand and walked with him out of the room and down the hall and down a set of stairs to a hallway and finally into a huge room with every toy a kid could ever want and a long mirror running along one side of the wall.
"See now isn't this room fun; what do you want to do first?"
"I-I-I want Auntie Gabby!" Ben sobbed, "Why couldn't she come?"
"You're pretty upset about that aren't you?" Dr. Turner handed him a box of Kleenex and led him towards a child-sized table with some playdo. "Why don't you tell me about it."
Ben sat down at the table and picked up the playdo and began molding it in his hands, "Lucas gets all her attention; and she told me I could help but she doesn't let me. She's just like Mom."
"Your mother?"
"After my Dad died my Mom never paid any attention to me she said I looked to much like my Dad."
"So now you're living with your Aunt and Uncle?"
"It was good at first but now it's just the same. No one pays attention to me. And the worst part is my brother gets attention too."
"Well have you told this to anyone?"
"No," As Ben maneuvered the play-do he began to calm down.
"Why not?"
"I don't know."
"You know what, I think the playdo has helped you calm down. Why don't we go back upstairs and tell Auntie Gabby and Uncle Matt how you feel."
"No, I don't to."
"Well what do you want to do?"
"I want- I want my Dad back! I want everything to go back to normal."
"Why don't you tell me about your Dad,"
"He died in a fire; nobody could save him. Then Mom was really sad and she started drinking a lot. And then she drank and drived and her friend died. That's why she's in jail."
"Is that why your Aunt and Uncle are looking after you and Griffin?"
"There not my real Aunt and Uncle; Uncle Matt was one of my Dad's best friends so we just call them Aunt and Uncle."
"Tell me more about Matt and Gabby."
"Uncle Matt's a firefighter just like my Dad was and Aunt Gabby's a EMT but she's staying home with Lucas now."
"Are you afraid Matt might die like your father?"
New tears started forming in Ben's eyes as he clenched his fists, "I don't want to do this anymore!" He pushed the play-do off the table and ran towards the door and tried to open it.
Dr. Turner gently held him back, "I'm done talking Ben," He spoke in a soothing voice, "If you want to go back we can but we need to go back together.
"Can we ride in the elevator? It's faster."
"I think we can do that," Dr. Turner opened the door and led him out into the hallway.
On the other side of the one-way mirror in the room Matt and Gabby stood with the other Doctor. They had been in there the entire time and they had heard everything Ben had said and saw everything that he did.
"Is this what you use for all children who come into the mental health unit?" Gabriela wondered.
"No, not all the time; just when we see a need for it," Dr. English a Child-Psychologist replied, "In this case we thought it would be good though so that you can see what Ben is really thinking and what makes him react a certain way."
"Yes; his physical aggression has become a lot worse and more frequent."
"Yes well that's one area that can be worked on; as I said earlier things like water play, sand play and Playdo all help relieve the urge to hit and get angry. But I do think Ben has some fears and anxieties that do need to be addressed." Dr. English explained as they walked into the hallway, "Can I ask about his brother? How is he handling everything?"
"Griffin's way of handling things is to bottle everything up inside. A few weeks ago though he had a breakdown and I could see he wanted to tell m something but he couldn't get the words out. I had to sit with him for nearly two hours before he calmed down." Matt explained to the doctor.
"I think it's very good you made appointments for both boys for Tuesday; it seems as though they're both struggling with this new arrangement. I'd like to see Ben personally on Tuesday and I'll have one of my colleagues see Griffin."
"Great," Gabby nodded.
"Auntie Gabby!" Ben rushed to her as soon as she walked into the room.
"Hey buddy," She kissed the top of his head, "How was the room you went to?"
"It was okay but it would have been better with you."
Gabriela squeezed him tight, "Say Thank you to Dr. Turner; then we can go home."
"Thank you Dr. Turner."
"You're very welcome Ben."
