CHAPTER 10 - CRACKING WALLS, TEARS AND A WINTER NIGHT LONG PAST
There was a fierce knock on the door...then once more...and again, a third time.
Lucy sulkily got to her feet and opened the door, revealing a determined looking Clary.
She gets these looks sometimes, she thought wryly. They always meant serious talk. No fun. No games. Reality, and a harsh one at that.
With great reluctance she stepped aside, letting Clary walk into the room.
Lucy let out an audible, but silent, sigh. She really didn't need this right now. After a night of tragic memories, and tears, for the first time in eleven years, she was definitely inclined to politely throw Clary out of her own room. What she needed was fun and games, something to slap her out of her nostalgia.
Clary, seemingly oblivious to her friend's internal grumbles, took place on the bed and motioned her to sit beside her.
Lucy stood there for a couple of seconds, actually seriously contemplating turning around and walking out of the room. Ah, it is a nice thought, she looked dreamily at the bedroom door. But it'll never work, she deadpanned. Not without hurting Clary, something she'd never be willing to do.
Resigned to her fate, she obediently sat down on the bed in the exact same position she'd sat staring at her parents picture.
Clary looked at her with clear green eyes, eyes which somehow mirrored her own. They shared the bright green eyes and the scarlet hair, something which Lucy had always found endearing.
Despite herself, Lucy managed to relax. Clary always made her feel appreciated. She indulged her mischievous attitude, always taking the jokes she played on her with a smile. Almost always, anyways. Her prankster ways seemed to have rubbed off on her too, she noted proudly. Before she knew it, her foul mood was completely gone, and Clary hadn't even said a thing. Ah, great!
Her inner turmoil suddenly forgotten, she met Clary's eyes with new motivation.
She took the hint and started speaking.
Lucy listened silently, deep in thought, but still watching Clary's every expression. It was an amazing story, truly fascinating. In short everything a good movie should entail, but this was not fiction. It was real. She smiled at the marvelous description of the Glass City, the fighting capabilities of the Shadowhunters, something which didn't really surprise her - she had eyes after all, her joy at finding her mum again and finally freely being able to love the love of her life without feeling something was seriously wrong. She'd gained new friends, a new life in an invisible, fantastic and terrible world. The pang of pain was as real as if she'd been there, when Clary told her about her father and brother, the lies her mother had told and the fear of death and loss.
In a moment of sudden clearness she understood exactly where Clary was going with her story. This wasn't just about telling her the truth. It was also about her. Her ability to see the invisible. She was part of this world somehow. How could this be true? My parents weren't...
Her thought's stopped dead; she barely recognized the silence in the room. With sudden realization and sharp pain, she understood. Mike insisting she learned how to fight. How they practically ran from her childhood town. The voices arguing in the living room a couple of hours before the fire, an unfamiliar angry voice rising above her parents.
The truth was clear as crystal. Her parent's death weren't an accident. It was murder.
The hours of troubled nightly hours passed, the break of dawn marking yet a new day's coming.
She met her friend's eyes, her expression telling her what her voice couldn't.
Clary grabbed her in a comforting hug.
For the second time since she got to bed last night, tears rolled down her cheeks.
Silently.
A/N:
Sorry about the lateness - that was a bit more than two weeks... I hope you liked the new chapter! I'll try to update every two weeks, but things will get a bit more hectic now with school and everything. Excuses, I know... I've also started to work on a new fanfic, this time about Harry Potter :)
I hope there is still some interest in this first fanfic of mine... Reviews are always appreciated :)
