Chapter 10: Angriest Pokemon Takes The Win
Friday, June 22nd
"Charmander, I choose you!" Charmander was up next, and I hoped that I could end this battle without having to use Mankey... I didn't think that using him would be beneficial to the victory which I was looking forward to. Jolteon should go down with just one more hit, then we just have two more Pokemon to defeat! "Use Ember!"
"Quick Attack Jolteon!" While the dog like electric Pokemon did managed to avoid Charmander's attack, she tripped over one of the stones littering the field, skidding along the ground roughly. That was all it took to knock out Jolteon. "Oh no, Jolteon!" Even though this Fisher guy seemed to be such a jerk, he definitely cared about his Pokemon a lot, and it looked like he had to actually restrain himself from running out to his Pokemon. Instead, the brunette returned Jolteon and picked out his second choice. "Zubat, I'm counting on you!"
The bat Pokemon was familiar to me, and I didn't take out my Pokedex to learn about it. It fluttered around in the air blindly, looking around frantically, trying to hear for its opponent.
"Char..." Zubat immediately turned towards my starter, and he gripped his bandana around his neck in fear.
"Use Air Cutter!"
"Smokescreen Charmander!" I could hear Charmander's cries from within the huge cloud of smoke that appeared, but even if we were hit our attack would give us a few minutes to place our own attack. "You know what to do bud." I stated loudly. Charmander should have known to get behind our opponent, and set up for an attack. As the smoke began to clear, I yelled to Charmander again. "Use Rock Tomb!" Who knew the sound of rocks coming up out of the ground would ever become so familiar to me? Zubat screeched, but I saw it flutter back up out of the remaining smoke, still able to fight.
"Watch out Zubat! Sludge Bomb!"
"Ember!" When Charmander's weak flames collided with the poisonous liquid, a horrid stench was blown throughout the area, so bad that I had to hold my arm up to my face in a futile attempt to try and keep the smell away from me. The poison attack splattered everywhere, oozing down rocks and some of it did hit Charmander, although it didn't cause major damage.
"Supersonic!"
"Dodge it!" Charmander shuddered, then rolled off to the side, barely avoiding the Supersonic attack. After standing back up he attempted to wipe the sludge off of himself. "Ember!"
"Use Bite Zubat!" Zubat, blind as it was, easily flew around the small blobs of fire that my starter had spit at it, and dove towards Charmander. The flying and poison type Pokemon chomped down on Charmander's left arm.
"Scratch Charmander!" After a cry of fright my Pokemon managed to fight off the other with Scratch. "Rock Tomb!"
"Supersonic!" Charmander's attack sent Zubat flying, but not before he had confused my fire type. Zubat was unconscious. Charmander stumbled around in front of me, unable to fully control himself with the confusion. I heard Fisher mumble something under his breath from across the field, probably a swear, as he returned Zubat and his fingers hovered over his remaining Pokeballs. He was deciding who to send out next.
"C'mon Fisher, take your pick! I haven't got all day! I need to win, and take my leave!"
"Shut up kid! Tauros, let's end this!" A large, tan colored Pokemon appeared. It jumped up and down, stomping and snorting, and looked to be insanely angry despite having just been released. I didn't recognize this Tauros, but it looked to be a relatively powerful Pokemon with its horns and three tails, whipping itself. I pulled out my purple Pokedex to learn more about this new Pokemon.
"Tauros, the wild bull Pokemon. A rowdy Pokémon with a lot of stamina. Once running, Tauros won't stop until it hits something."
"Okay... Charmander, I need you to get ahold of yourself!" Charmander was still tripping over it's own tail, the flame on the end of it becoming very small and suddenly flaring up at random.
"Pft... Tauros, use Zen Headbutt!" The crown of the bull Pokemon's head glowed a light blue, and after whipping itself one more time for good measure, it charged at my small starter Pokemon.
"Roooowr!" It's loud, snort like call was enough to put me right on edge.
"Charmander, watch out! Charmander, boy! Snap out of it!" Nothing seemed to be working. I couldn't wake him up! He was practically a bowling pin, and Tauros threw him so far up into the air that for a moment, I lost sight of Charmander. As he began to plummet back down to Earth, I hastily moved myself underneath the fainted Pokemon. "I've got you... I've got you!" With a grunt, I managed to catch and secure the fire type in my arms, and after a grimace, return him to his Pokeball. "This is going to be one hell of a finish..." I then mumbled. Fisher's Tauros is strong and angry. And the only Pokemon I've got left is also strong, and twice as angry... I guess it'll be interesting to see how this turns out...
I threw up my remaining Pokeball containing my final Pokemon. Mankey landed on the ground lightly but wildly waving his arms.
"Ma ha ankey!" Without waiting at all, Mankey practically threw himself at Tauros, hand ready to Karate Chop him. Tauros, not being light on it's feet, couldn't dodge it, and rocked backwards dangerously.
"Hey! Control your Pokemon!" Fisher yelled angrily to me.
"Don't you think I would if I could?! Mankey, chill out for a second!" It didn't even seem like the fighting type heard me. Meanwhile, Tauros practically had steam pouring out it's nostrils.
"Payback Tauros!" With its horns glowing a dark purple, the bull Pokemon finally got it's chance to charge.
"Look out Mankey!" Payback would do a lot of damage after our last super effective attack, and I didn't want to take any chances.
"Kee!" Suddenly there was a game of jump and roll going on right in front of me. Tauros got more ferocious every time it missed an attack, and Mankey would just jump over the bigger creature and roll away every time. After a few of these the crazy fight type began to take some dangerous chances. He would do handstands and flips off of Tauros' back, laughing and chattering in a mocking matter afterwards. I even let a few giggles slip when Tauros simply began to shake it's head it attempt to catch Mankey on one of its horns.
"C'mon Tauros, use Giga Impact!" Tauros' body was immediately covered by a yellowish white aura, and he reared up, managing to completely reverse himself. With Mankey behind the normal type, it only had to take a few steps before ramming powerfully into Mankey. Mankey cried loudly as he was knocked quite far away from the middle of the field, finally stopping when he hit a large boulder. Tauros on the other hand, was unable to stop itself, until it too hit a huge rock, but unlike Mankey Tauros flat out destroyed the rock. It cracked into a million pieces, and Tauros finally slowed to a stop, breathing heavily and snorting triumphantly.
"Alright! We've got this Tauros!"
"Not so fast! Mankey use-" I saw Mankey start an attack of his own before I even commanded it, and I quickly finished my sentence to make it look like that was what I wanted all along. I didn't like the idea of being a novice trainer compared to Fisher. He could control his wild Pokemon, while I couldn't. "Use Assurance!"
Mankey, although hurt, was still full of energy, and launched himself up into the air, and came down on Tauros, nearly taking the legs out from underneath it, then adding a Thunderbolt to the wild bull Pokemon for good measure. I gulped, hoping that Fisher wouldn't point that out again... Luckily though, he was too concerned with how the battle was going right now.
"Tauros! Are you alright!?"
"Taaaaooor!" Tauros, although badly hurt, appeared to be more pugnacious than ever. It began swiping it's hooves on the hard ground, kicking up a lot of dirt and dust. There was visible steam coming out from it's nose.
"Alright! It's about time!"
"What is that?!" I watched apprehensively as Tauros' face grew a bit red, and it's call began to sound more like a bulldozer than anything.
"This is my Tauros' great ability! Now that he's been hit with a critical attack, his own attack is way stronger! There's' no way we can lose! Zen Headbutt, go!"
"Dodge it Mankey!" Mankey however, must have had something different in mind. It was like I hadn't said anything at all, and he simply stood there, facing Tauros' attack head on. "Mankey, Mankey look out!" What's he doing?! He could faint from an attack like that, especially after Tauros' ability has been activated! But, Mankey did not move. He was once again knocked furiously backward, flipping over backwards and landing on his back. I was amazed and my eyes widened at how resilient Mankey was. Even after that attack, he was still getting back up.
"Ma... Ma... KEY!" After breathing heavily for a few minutes, Mankey began to pound its chest and jump up and down savagely. It screeched loudly, and just like Tauros before, steam practically poured out of Mankey's nose.
"What's going on!?" Fisher yelled to me. I shrugged, although I didn't think that Fisher could see. I whipped out my Pokedex, and it explained what was going on.
"The ability Anger Point. When a Pokemon with Anger Point gets hit with a critical attack, it's own attack dramatically increases with the possessors' anger."
"No way!"
"Ha! Your Tauros isn't the only one with that special ability anymore! We're still in the running!"
"Yeah, right! Giga Impact again Tauros!"
"Thunderbolt!" Although Mankey actually listened to me for once, our attack didn't matter. There was no stopping the normal type bull charging our way once it got started, and it barreled straight through Mankey. "NO!" For the first time since I had caught Mankey, I was worried for him, and felt like he was part of the team. He stood shakily, his long arms swaying dangerously.
"Now use Zen Headbutt!"
"Karate Chop!" Mankey jumped up above Tauros as it charged forward, and a powerful Karate Chop attack to it's back finally forced Tauros down. It fell face first into the ground, sliding along the ground. "Alright!"
"Not so fast! We're not done yet!" Just like Mankey, Tauros still got back up. For a second I wondered if this battle would ever actually end.
"You will be! Use Assurance Mankey!" I was amazed at how well Mankey was now taking orders. I was so excited to have this new official member of my team, one that I could train, and actually walk with, and I felt as if nothing in the world could keep us from winning this battle!
"Zen Headbutt Tauros!" And just as Mankey was about to attack Tauros again, the normal type reared up on it's hind legs, and instead of hitting Tauros' vulnerable back Mankey made contact with it's glowing head. Mankey practically slammed into Tauros' head, not expecting it to rear up like it did, and flew over the top of the bull Pokemon. Mankey hit the ground with a thud, and just like that, all my excitement from before died.
"Mankey!" I called. There was no response, and just like before, when Ghastly defeated Mankey, he was still, except for heavy breathing. I sprinted over the furry Pokemon's side, and knelt down next to him after clearing away some chunks of a large rock destroyed during our battle. "No..." I ran my finger over the very edges of Mankey's lightly colored hair, and sighed.
"So much for all that big talk, huh kid." I glanced behind me at Fisher's smirk. He was standing besides Tauros, who was just as tall as Fisher was, with his hand on the normal type's head. Tauros snorted and threw it's head back.
"Shut up." I looked away from Fisher, allowing my jet black hair to fall over my face. I heard him snicker behind me, but I ignored him as I returned Mankey to his Pokeball.
I had been hoping that Fisher would just leave after that, but he didn't, and I was forced to stand up, and walk around Fisher, back into the Pokemon Center. I passed Alison on the way in, who seemed to be in a much better mood now. Her Clefable followed gladly behind her.
"Hey Violet, what are you doing out here?" Alison smiled, and hadn't done anything wrong, yet I still didn't answer her, instead heading straight for the counter and handing Nurse Joy my Pokemon without a word. "Violet! Hey, don't just ignore me Violet!" I whirled on the taller girl, who was glaring at me with her bright green eyes. Some of her hot pink hair fell forward off of her shoulders, and Alison's hands were on her hips.
"Why can't I!? You aren't the boss of me!"
"You're acting just like a little kid! You're a trainer now Violet, take some responsibility and act like one!" There it is again... A kid.
"I lost okay?! Fisher and I battled, and I lost!"
"Why the heck did you challenge him?! He has three Gym Badges Violet, his Pokemon are more powerful than yours almost by default!"
"Obviously! Now just leave me alone!" With that I stormed off to my room, and I heard Alison sigh and leave as well.
Whatever, not like I care anyways.
Later That Night
I was lying in bed, watching cartoons. I couldn't really get comfortable, and kept rolling over. And after several hours of my thoughts and feelings brewing, despite hating how I felt, I was ashamed and felt guilty about being so mean to Alison. I sighed for what felt like the millionth time and sat up, brushing my rat's nest out of my face. I had finally decided to get up and do something with myself. Nurse Joy had called up several hours ago to say that my Pokemon were ready to go, and I was feeling pretty bored with myself...
For the most part the lobby downstairs was empty. It was nearly eight o'clock, and many of the trainers staying here had just left to traverse Mt. Moon. Apparently it was pretty common for trainers to stay at this Pokemon Center for a couple of days, then a group of seven or so trainers would group up and travel all the way to Cerulean City together. Another group had just set off today, so the Center was relatively empty.
"There you are Violet!" Nurse Joy, who had been wiping down her counters, looked up and smiled at me. "I was wondering when you would be coming down!" I rubbed the back of my head and blushed a little. The pink haired woman walked around the counter and picked up three small Pokeballs, and placed them into my hands.
"Thanks a lot."
"No problem! So Violet, do you know when you're going to leave?" I shook my head.
"I don't think so. Mt. Moon's pretty big, so it's just been nice to relax so far..." Nurse Joy nodded in understanding.
"I see. Are you going to be traveling with Alison?" I swallowed and shrugged at this. Would she even want to travel with me now?
"I'm not sure. I don't think she's even going that way..."
"Well, good luck Violet." And Nurse Joy continued with her cleaning in the strangely bright lobby, with the darkness outside.
I turned around and began to go back to my room, but some suspiciously heavy footsteps caught my attention and I turned around. I was being stared at by the very person I had just been thinking about, who was much closer than I had originally thought. I stumbled backwards and blinked.
"Alison?"
"Hey. Still got a stick up your butt?" I frowned, and almost opened my mouth to say something, but thought better of it.
"Sorry about earlier, I was just kind of annoyed about losing." To my surprise, Alison sighed, but then smiled at me.
"That's alright. It's part of the trainer life, learning how to deal with failures like that. You just have to get back up and brush the dust off is all." I gave her a small smile of my own.
"Thanks."
"No prob friendo!" Just like nothing had ever happened, Alison slung an arm around my shoulders. "This is what I'm here for! You know, I should really write a book! And I'll call it 'Bouvier's Guide To Trainerism'!" I laughed.
"I'd buy it!"
"Sweet! So tomorrow, we're leaving right?"
"Tomorrow?" I looked up at Alison in surprise.
"Yeah, I figure two days' is enough time-"
"I've only been here one."
"Well, one day is plenty! I'll send you on your way to Mt. Moon, and I'll be going to Pewter City!" My hopes fell a little. Just like with Jackson, Alison wouldn't be staying with me. But, like Alison seemed to say so often, that was the trainer life. "You should really get to sleep though Violet. The mountain will take a lot out of you for the next couple of days." I nodded, and we parted ways at our rooms.
Once inside, I crawled into bed, and tried to think about how much fun I could have, with just my Pokemon and I.
