Chapter 10

Rachel's eyes narrow as she stares down her sister, not at all impressed to see her favourite doll in her arms. She grabs Santana's monkey, Morris, and holds him tightly, watching as Santana's eyes widen. Their silent war is coming to a head, and Rachel knows she's winning. Santana wouldn't let anything bad happen to Morris. Santana scowls at Rachel, her nose wrinkling. She only stole her big sister's doll because Rachel wouldn't stop bossing her around, but now she doesn't know what to do. If she gives Rachel the doll back, she might tell on her afterwards. If she doesn't give Rachel the doll back, she won't get Morris back. Her three year old mind doesn't even think of asking Rachel for a fair swap, and she lunges forward. Santana grabs Morris' arm, but Rachel doesn't let go and poor Morris' arm rips straight off. Rachel stares in horror as her little sister gazes at the arm in her hand, tears flooding Santana's eyes.

"Mommy!" Santana wails, tears cascading down her cheeks as she drops Rachel's doll to the floor. Rachel rushes forward and grabs her doll. She then pushes Morris into Santana's arms and attempts to comfort her.

"No, don't cry!" Rachel pleads, scared that her mommies will hear Santana and come to investigate. "Please don't cry, it's okay!" Rachel's eyes widen as Santana's sobs get louder, her face turning red as she incoherently cries for her mommy.

"What's going on here?" Quinn asks as she rushes into the bedroom the girls are sharing. She stops short when she sees Santana holding her beloved monkey's arm. Crap, this isn't good. This isn't good at all. A damaged Morris means a heartbroken Santana, and a heartbroken Santana means a whole lot of tears. Quinn pulls Santana into her arms and holds the inconsolable girl close, rubbing her back and kissing her head.

"It was an accident, mommy," Rachel immediately defends herself, before Quinn can even question her about the situation. "She just grabbed him and I was holding onto him really tight," she rambles, tripping over her words as she rushes to get the explanation out.

"Why did you have him?" Rachel turns to look at her mama as she stands in the doorway with a half dressed Sugar. Brittany raises her brow, waiting expectantly.

"She stole my doll," Rachel tells her.

"So, you stole Morris," Brittany sighs. "The fighting between you girls is getting out of hand," Brittany scolds.

"Why am I getting all of the blame?" Rachel asks quietly, a pout on her lips. Brittany sighs softly,

"you're not getting all of the blame," Brittany states carefully. "I've told you so many times to just come and tell us when Santana takes your things, and then we would deal with Santana. If you had done that, then this wouldn't have happened. Now both of you in trouble," Brittany explains sternly. Rachel bows her head, staring at the floor with tears in her eyes. She knows her mama is right.

"I really am sorry," Rachel mumbles. "I didn't mean for that to happen. She can break my doll if she wants to." Quinn glances across at Brittany, and both of them feel a surge of fondness for their oldest girl. Rachel can be really sweet when she wants to be.

"No," Brittany shakes her head. "We're not going to let her do that," Brittany softly says. "That wouldn't be very nice," she adds. "Why don't you put your toys away. Mommy and I will come and see you once we've had a little chat." Rachel nods sadly, accepting that she's going to be punished in some way.

"Both of you are in trouble, and both of you will be punished in the same way," Brittany reassures her. "You're both to blame." Brittany leads Sugar back into the bedroom the girl is sharing with her and Quinn, Quinn and Santana following close behind. Quinn struggles to calm Santana down as Brittany finishes dressing Sugar, Santana still clinging to Morris' little arm. Brittany shares a worried glance with Quinn as she sets up Sugar's play mat, joining her girlfriend and Santana on the bed once she is sure that Sugar is happy enough to play on her own.

"It's okay, baby girl," Brittany murmurs, reaching out to stroke Santana's hair. "We can try and fix him." Santana lifts her head from Quinn's shoulder and looks at Brittany with red, hopeful eyes. She sniffles lightly and hiccups as she curiously stares at her mama. "See, that cheered you up a little, huh?" Brittany smiles.

"You can really fix Morris?" Santana questions, her eyes narrowing as she suspiciously studies her mama.

"Yeah, baby! We just need to sew his little arm back on," Brittany tells her. "Your mommy can sew really well, can't you mommy?" Quinn smiles,

"yep. I can fix Morris right up and he'll be good as new," Quinn confirms. Santana gazes at Quinn for a moment before bursting into tears again, burying her face in Quinn's chest. Quinn lets out a low chuckle as she rubs Santana's back.

"Happy tears this time," Quinn murmurs to a concerned Brittany, "so cute!" Quinn adds, barely audible and only for Brittany to hear. Brittany nods, grinning.

"Ma!" Sugar yells, "mama!" she yells again, louder this time. Brittany kneels down next to the girl, sitting on her haunches. "Ma, 'wim!" Brittany frowns,

"mama doesn't know what you need, baby girl," Brittany gently states. "Can you point at it?" Sugar frantically shakes her head no.

"'wim!" Brittany frowns again and looks across at Quinn, Quinn shrugging.

"She wants to go swimming," Rachel murmurs from the doorway. Brittany looks up, lifting her brow at their oldest girl. "I heard her shout, I'll go back to the bedroom, mama." Rachel turns to leave,

"No, no, baby. Come here," Brittany calls after her, gesturing for her to come into the bedroom. Rachel wanders tentatively to Brittany. "Thanks, baby. Good looking out," Brittany winks at Rachel, coaxing a smile from the girl. "Go speak to Santana," Brittany murmurs, giving her a reassuring smile. Rachel frowns ever so slightly,

"I thought I was in trouble," she whispers. Brittany glances over at Quinn, and Quinn nods her head ever so slightly towards their pillows. Brittany nods, understanding what Quinn is saying to her.

"Well, mommy and I don't want anything like this to happen again," Brittany states as Quinn nudges Santana, ensuring the girl is listening. This little lecture is for both of them. "Santana, I want you to stop taking Rachel's things without asking. If I find out you've taken anything without asking again, I will spank you and put you to bed. Do you understand me?"

"Yes, mama," Santana solemnly replies, sniffling a little as she gazes at her mama with wide eyes.

"And Rachel, getting your own back is just as naughty and it just makes the situation worse," Quinn tells her, gazing sternly at Rachel from her place on the bed. "The same will happen to you if anything like this happens again, okay?"

"Okay, mommy," Rachel immediately responds, eager for her parents to be happy with her again.

"You will both go to bed straight after bath time tonight. No story or movie, just straight to bed," Brittany states. Both girls pout and gaze at her pleadingly and Brittany shrugs, "maybe this will teach you both to stop fighting all of the time." Brittany gazes at Rachel, jerking her head in Santana's direction, encouraging the girl to go and speak to her. She turns her attention to Sugar, the girl gripping onto her elbow. "You wanna go swimming, angel?" Brittany asks. Sugar excitedly nods,

"Wim, mama! 'wim!"

"Again, mommy! Again!"

"Alright, deep breath...and go!" Brittany grins as she watches Quinn submerge herself and Santana underneath the surface of the lake, both of them popping back up a short moment later. She chuckles at Santana's cheers, and smiles fondly when the girl wrinkles her nose and blinks away the water droplets from her lashes. She looks so cute in her water wings, and so does Rachel for that matter. Brittany dangles her legs over the edge of the small pier, dipping her feet into the water as she keeps on eye on Rachel and Sugar. They're sitting at the edge of the lake, the water only reaching their tummies. Brittany has no idea what Rachel is saying to her younger sister but, whatever it is, Sugar seems to find it hilarious. Brittany lets out a low groan when she notices Sugar's fingers straying towards the ties on her life jacket for the third time this afternoon. Sliding off the edge of the pier, Brittany wades along the shallow water and stands over Sugar, her hands on her hips.

"Sugar, mama already told you...it's not safe to try and take your life jacket off," Brittany scolds. Sugar's bottom lip protrudes as she gazes up at her unhappy mama, her chin quivering. Sugar never could stand being told off. "I'm gonna sit right here with you, and I better not see you trying to untie it again," Brittany states firmly, plopping down next to Rachel and Sugar.

"Mama, can I take my water wings off?" Rachel innocently asks. "I'm not in deep water." Brittany sighs softly. She would usually say yes, but she suspects that this would just upset Sugar and she really doesn't want to deal with a tantrum right now. Not while they're having such a nice day.

"Just keep them on, babe," Brittany tells her. She notices Quinn looking over at them and, despite the fact she's just got settled, Brittany is more than happy to oblige when Quinn gestures for them to join her and Santana. "I'm gonna take Sugar in a little deeper, so you'll need them, anyway. You can't stay here by yourself," Brittany adds. She turns to Sugar, "you ready, baby girl?" she animatedly asks, grinning when Sugar excitedly claps her hands.

"Raaaaaachel!" they hear Santana yell from a little further out.

"Come on, I think your little sister is going to burst if we don't get out there soon," Brittany states, winking at Rachel. "Go get her!" Rachel giggles and scrambles forward, pulling herself along until the water is deep enough to swim in. Brittany chuckles lightly as Rachel does a kind of doggy paddle to get to Quinn and Santana, she and Sugar making their way out to them at a much slower pace.

"Hurry up, mama!" Brittany hears Santana impatiently yell, followed by a warning from Quinn. Santana would often forget her manners when she gets excited, and she flew past excited around twenty minutes ago. Sugar whimpers as they get a little deeper and Brittany tightens her grip around Sugar's waist. She smiles when she feels Sugar's legs wrap around her waist. She's never been able to carry any of the girls on her hip before, but being in the water finally gives her that opportunity. Brittany swallows the sudden lump that rises in her throat. She wishes she could do this more often.

"Mama," Sugar mumbles into her neck, her voice trembling a little bit.

"It's okay, sweetheart," Brittany coos, "you're okay. Mama's got you, and your life jacket makes you float. You're okay," Brittany repeats, her tone soft and reassuring. "We're gonna have lots of fun," Brittany attempts to distract Sugar from her little moment of fear. "We're gonna sneak up on mommy, and Santana, and Rachel," she lowers her voice conspiringly, "and we're going to jump on them and dunk them under the water."

"Mommy?" Sugar questions.

"Uh huh, mommy as well," Brittany confirms, grinning when Sugar's brown eyes widen with glee. "We'll be a team, and we'll kick their butts," Brittany promises her.

"Butts," Sugar nods, her features suddenly very serious. Her eyes narrow as they get closer to her mommy and sisters, determination flowing through and she turns to look at her mama, nodding again, "butts."
