"I know I shouldn't be the person to ask you this - but why are you giving up?"
Ben was laying on his side against the wet ground. This planet was nothing but moisture. If it wasn't raining the perspiration seemed to rise up from the earth. The foliage and moss trapped it low to the ground to where it never reached the insane canopy above. It was too damp to start fires. His lightsaber spit and crackled when he ignited it…
And Luke was right.
He had simply given up.
"Why not? It runs in my family to give up." He drew his Ren cape around him tighter and curled his knees as close as he could towards his chest.
"Sure, but we always redeem ourselves in the end."
Ben scoffed and sat up to give his uncle an ironic expression;
"Is that what you think you did? Redeemed yourself? You did nothing."
Luke gently quirked his brows and looked downwards before looking back at his nephew with eyes much too blue. Ben could see the Jedi he used to be but that made tears spring to his eyes.
"You always found the good in everyone. Gave up your jedi training with Yoda to save my parents. Confronted and turned Vader when he was a lost cause to the galaxy. Yet, you gave up on me. You all did."
Luke's eyes sparkled even though he was a force ghost. He wanted nothing more than to draw this boy close to his chest like he used to.
"I tried to train all of you the Jedi way. I tried to pass on what I had learned…though it wasn't much. My problem is I've always tried too hard. Eventually even the brightest star fades. Everyone sees what they want to see. They see my accomplishments when I see my failures. My failure with you was the straw that broke my back. I failed Yoda by leaving him. Failed your father by trying to save him and getting him encased in carbonite. Leia…Trapped like a pet to a randy Hutt. Your parents loved you with everything that they had. The rebel life wasn't an easy one for any of us let alone to bring you in to. They thought that if you came to me your life would be more calm."
"They sentenced me to a slave-hermits life with you. There was no future with you."
Luke didn't answer to that.
"Did any of you ever think about what I wanted?"
Luke stared a long time before finally answering;
"No."
Ben looked from his uncle and rested his elbows on his upturned knees. His fingers fiddled absently.
"I know this isn't anything new either-but-I sense the conflict in you over Rey."
"Conflict or not there isn't a damn thing to be done. I can't get off this planet with no ship."
Luke looked at the wreckage a ways from them and then back to Ben with a smug smile. Ben narrowed his eyes and clenched his jaw. The muscle along his jawline jumped and ticked until he released the pressure. He knew what Luke was looking at him that way for.
"No telling who would come to my aide if I activated a beacon. I've abandoned the First Order and have killed family in the Resistance."
"Rey doesn't care about any of that. She's like you in that way."
"Yeah, well, I've killed her too." Ben said sadly and watched as he flexed a hand and examined the dirt under his nails.
"Have you actually searched through the force with your feelings about the situation?"
"The force dream I had was pretty specific."
"But your feelings towards the situation have changed."
Ben looked from his hand back at his uncle. His expression was questioning.
"The scene isn't going to change because I feel differently about it."
Luke's eyes widened and he reached a hand out towards Ben but then retracted it within a Jedi sleeve; "Our feelings are the force. We are constantly being swayed by it to do it's bidding. The dark, the light, the struggle for balance. It doesn't care what happens to us one way or the other - only that it is balanced."
Ben shrugged and waved his hands in an exaggeration of being mystified. Luke laughed and stood up.
"It's your decision, nephew. But I've seen you make the right choice. You have enough Skywalker in you at least for that."
Poe hadn't left Rey's side for weeks. He basically had moved in to the medical area and didn't help with defending it or anything else. Always at her side. Holding her hand. He even slept most times with his head on the mattress beside her and hunched over uncomfortably in his chair.
Finn visited often and asked for any progress. There never was any and he was starting to worry about the haggard looking Poe beside his best friends bed.
One night he came in determined to try to help. He had Rose behind him to back him up. With his shoulders squared and his chest puffed up he stomped over to Poe and poked him in the chest with a finger.
"You need to help the rest of the resistance! Do you think Rey would be sitting here the entire time if it were you?"
Poe's face crumpled and Finn's did too. This is what he brought Rose in for. She immediately seen the weakness and skipped up to them.
"No! She wouldn't! So get off your ass Dameron and come back to help us fight for a future!"
"She's pregnant…" Poe said this so sadly and his expression was so hollow that even Rose gasped.
For a long time Finn and Rose just stood there completely aghast. Poe had his head in the mattress weeping quietly. His shoulders shook with the intensity of his grief. Finn was horrified of what was going to happen because of the vision Rey had told only him about.
"You…You could…You could terminate it." He broke the silence.
Poe shook his head against the bed and grasped Rey's hand in both of his as hard as he could. He knew how badly she wanted a child to call her own. Even if it was a child of rape, and he got rid of it, would she ever forgive him? Finn had never taken Rey's trust in him for granted or shared any of her secrets-but now was the time. He grabbed a chair and sat it in front of Poe. It took him some effort to pry Poe's hands from Rey's but he eventually did and gripped them tightly in his own. He waited until Poe's eyes reached for his and then he took in a deep inhalation of breath for courage.
"Rey told me something before all this happened."
Poe's reddened face screwed up in to one full of questions.
"She said that you two were having trouble making a baby…so…she went to the medical droids and they said that it was something wrong with one of you that your fertility was messed up."
"Why wouldn't she have told me that?" Poe whispered as a spike of jealousy began to rise in him.
"She was afraid of hurting you by telling you-but that's not the bad part."
"Do I want to know the bad part?"
"Probably not, but you should, and I hope when she wakes up she won't kill me for it. She can be pretty scary."
"Finn!" Poe snatched his hands from Finn's and punched him in the shoulder to stop stalling.
Finn cleared his throat and flailed his hands about in terror before he just barreled out with it so fast it took Poe a minute after he was done for it to sink in; "She said after she went to the medical droid she was walking around and then she seen Kylo Ren through the force and he told her that she was going to get pregnant and she was going to die giving birth to the baby and she is all alone except for me and oh, Poe, I don't know anything about bringing babies in the world and I didn't want to believe her but she knew it was true cause she said she felt it through the force…"
"Did she say it was Ren's child?" Poe had some of that old fire back in his eyes.
"No! He even told her that it would be your child."
Poe looked from Finn back down to his wife and contemplated. Finn grabbed his hand again; "Maybe if you got rid of it she would wake up? Maybe it's the magic or the force or something that is keeping her asleep? I don't want her to die…"
Poe squeezed his friends hand back in reassurance and made a decision; "If she doesn't wake up by this time tomorrow we'll terminate."
The little face was so perfect. All smooth lines and contours. Cheeks so plump and full of promise. Crowned with a beautiful batch of startling black curls. Thick long lashes resting peacefully against those sweet cheeks.
Rey was amazed by the childs beauty as he rested against her arm. They were laying somewhere in tall green grass and she was curled around a small boy. He had fallen asleep with her inner arm as his pillow. She could feel the warmth from his parted lips as he exhaled peacefully. Tenderly she reached with her free hand to his hair and marveled at the silken texture. But the boy's brows came together in irritation and he grumbled in his sleep. He rolled to his back and flung his little arms out and ended up smacking the back of one against her cheek.
Rey laughed quietly as tears streamed from her eyes and she used her free hand to stick a couple fingers against his palm. His little hand curled around her fingers in a grip that would be strong as a man's.
Then suddenly he was gone.
Rey scrambled to her feet. She looked around frantically for the boy but there was no sign that he had even been there.
"Where did you go!? Are you okay?! Come back! Call out to me!"
"Rey!"
It was Ben's voice that called out to her in terror. She ran towards it but the grass was so tall and thick she was running blind.
"Ben! Where is he?! Do you see him!?"
Suddenly the grass was gone and she had run right off the edge of a cliff. Her stomach lurched as her body upended over itself and she plummeted towards an ocean. She was so terrified that she couldn't even squeak out let alone scream. Sickeningly fast she fell until she stopped completely right above the roiling water. She looked around and seen Ben drowning.
"Rey!" He screamed as he inhaled a gulp of water and his head sank beneath the waves.
"Ben!" She screamed back and reached out towards his flailing hands. She managed to grasp one but whatever had been holding her above the water let go. Soon she was also drowning as he pulled her under and beneath the murky water their eyes connected.
"Let go." She heard him say as an echo far away.
"Never!" She screamed under water and kicked her legs.
Rey broke through the surface of the water and with all of the strength she had ever used hauled Ben with her. There were no shores or beaches. Just a small lip of a rock that would give her just enough room to crawl up and drag Ben to. She smoothed his hair back from his cold face. His lips were blue and he wasn't breathing.
"Please don't go…"
She cradled him in her arms and pressed her lips against his. In reply he coughed so hard his body wracked and her mouth was filled with water. She helped him sit up and furiously smacked at his back to bring up all of the water in his lungs. When he was done coughing and collapsed back in to her arms-suddenly-it was the boy again. Drenched and shivering and looking around with wide brown eyes filled with fear.
"Don't be afraid. I'm here. I won't go. I'll never go." She promised.
The little boy's terrified face wrinkled up and started to cry. Rey held him as tightly and as closely as she could. Protecting him, warming him, giving him comfort she was never given.
