Chapter 10: An Off Day for Ally
Ally was curled up on the couch. She was still in her PJs and cream cardigan. She pushed her hand through her hair. She couldn't remember the last time she felt this uncomfortable in her own skin. It had been almost a week since she had gone shopping with the girls. At first everything was going really well, she was feeling great, but now . . . it felt liked she flat lined . . .
She watched as Trish ran past her calling that if the guys weren't down stairs in thirty seconds than she would kill them. Today Austin's band was meeting with the record company in charge of his career. Austin seemed anxious all week. He hadn't told Ally why he was so nervous, but she didn't feel she needed to know. She watched as they all rushed down the stairs. Kira and Cassidy went out already, since their presence wasn't needed at these meetings. They invited Ally to come along, but she declined. She didn't feel much like getting up today, but she couldn't seem to figure out why.
Austin's jacket was on the couch next to her. He came over to her and grabbed it. He kept his eyes on Ally as he put it on. "You wanna come with?" He asked her.
As she opened her mouth to answer, Trish, coming from the other direction said, "I already asked her. She said no."
Austin raised his eyebrow at Ally. He had noticed she was acting differently. He worried over this change a lot. "I'm just tired." She said in a quiet voice and she pushed her hair back. She really was tired the past couple nights had been difficult for her. She hadn't been sleeping well even though she tired her absolute best to sleep. Her body refused to let her sleep.
Austin nodded, but he didn't seem satisfied. This would be the second time Ally was alone at this house and the first time led her to running away. It would only be a few hours, but Austin didn't want to think about all the things Ally could accomplish in a few hours.
Dez came up next holding his turtle. "Ally, if you're going to stay here, could you babysit my turtle?" Dez asked her. Ally raised her eyebrow, but shook it off knowing Dez was odd, but a very good friend.
"Sure, Dez." She said, taking the turtle in her hands and then placing him on the couch next to her.
"Awesome," Dez then pulled out a paper that stretched out to the floor. "Here's a list of his allergies, favorite foods, favorite activities and toys. And instructions on where you can find Austin's hair gel. Which he sometimes likes when he wants to feel pretty." Dez said shrugging his shoulders as if he was saying he didn't get his turtle sometimes. Ally took the list in her hands and glanced it over. She then looked up at Austin, who only smiled and shrugged like Dez had before.
"Don't worry Dez." Ally said, smiling weakly at him. "We'll be ok." Dez nodded, he trusted her. Dez turned and went to stand at the front door with Trish, Elliot and Dallas. Austin looked at them and then looked back to Ally. "See you later." Ally said, smiling at him.
Austin smiled back at her. "See you later." He said back to her. Reluctantly, he went to the door and left with the others. Ally watched after them for a while. The smile faded into a line on her lips. She brushed her hand through her hair again. She grabbed her journal and started writing.
. . .
It was late afternoon now. Ally had made herself and the turtle some lunch, while she continued to work on the song she had been writing since she got here. She had grabbed Austin's guitar and had been playing around with music for a while now. She thought she might have it figured out. She looked at the turtle chewing on a piece of lettuce. "You ready to hear this?" She asked. He moved his head slightly, which was a yes to her. She started strumming the guitar.
Got up on the wrong side of life today, yeah
Crashed the car and I'm gonna be really late
My phone doesn't work 'cause it's out of range
Looks like it's just one of those kind of days
You can't kick me down I'm already on the ground
No, you can't cause you couldn't catch me anyhow
Blue skies but the sun isn't coming out, no
Today it's like I'm under a heavy cloud
And I feel so alive
I can't help myself, don't you realize
I just wanna scream and lose control
Throw my hands up and let it go
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
I just want to fall and lose myself
Laughing so hard it hurts like hell
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
So so how I'm doing if you're wondering
I'm in a fight with the world but I'm winning
Stay there, come closer it's at your own risk
Yeah, you know how it is life can be a bitch
I feel so alive
I can't help myself, don't you realize
I just wanna scream and lose control
Throw my hands up and let it go
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
I just want to fall and lose myself
Laughing so hard it hurts like hell
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
Runaway, runaway
Runaway, runaway
Runaway, runaway
Runaway, runaway
I just wanna scream and lose control
Throw my hands up and let it go
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
I just want to fall and lose myself
Laughing so hard it hurts like hell
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
I just wanna scream and lose control
Throw my hands up and let it go
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
I just want to fall and lose myself
Laughing so hard it hurts like hell
Forget about everything and runaway, yeah
Ally strummed the last note and looked at the turtle. She was surprised when she saw he looked like he was smiling. She liked the song, but she was too nervous to share it with anyone. The turtle was the only one she seemed comfortable with. She remembered writing the song with Austin and even singing with him here in this living room only a week ago. But, what would he think if he heard her saying she wanted to run away? She sighed and let her head fall back on the couch. She needed to sleep.
. . .
The loud slam of the door woke Ally up. She had no idea what time it was or even how long she had been asleep. The only thing she saw was Austin rushing past her. She could see his body was tense and angry. He immediately went up the stairs and slammed his bedroom door loudly. Ally turned to look at Trish and the guys who each looked tense and exhausted. "What happened?" Ally asked Trish.
"Don't ask." She answered in an upset tone and she went past the living room to the kitchen.
Ally looked at Dez, who was picking up his turtle. "Thanks for watching him, Ally." He walked toward his room. Ally nodded slowly at what he said. She sighed and realized it was too tense for her right now. She picked up her journal and decided to go to the roof.
She went to her usual place and sat down, watching the sun set in the distance. She still didn't understand why she felt so off today. Why was today worse than before? She sighed, feeling she might never understand. She stared at the sun in the distance, hoping it would provide her with answers. The sudden boom of the door made her jump out of her skin. She spun around and saw Austin. His anger seemed to fade to awkwardness when he realized he scared Ally.
"Sorry." He mumbled. His emotions seemed mixed between angry and awkward and it came through on his voice.
"It's ok." She said, though she was still startled. She turned back and watched the sun again. Austin quietly shuffled to her side. He sat next to her in a peaceful silence. Ally wanted to ask how it went today, but she could tell that would only upset him. She didn't want him to be angry with her. She sighed again, feeling confused about her emotions all over again.
"How was your day?" Austin asked. He sounded a lot calmer and more exhausted now.
Ally smiled weakly at him. "It was ok."
Austin looked at her concerned. "Are you sure? Are you alright, Ally?" He asked at her. "You're worrying me lately." He shared with her.
"I'm worrying myself." She said. "I don't know what's going on with me today." She explained. She couldn't remember the last time she felt this lost.
"Well you know, you can talk to me if you need anything." Austin said to her. She nodded and went back to looking at the sun, which was gone from the sky now. As the moon started rising in the sky, Ally thought about the first time the moon had made her feel better.
Ally felt the world shake around her. She figured it out. What had been bothering her . . . why she was so off . . .
Austin saw this change in her face. "What's wrong?" He asked.
"I just remembered. It's been 7 years since I first started running away." She said, never feeling weaker. "It's my birthday."
