A/N: My apologies for the delay. As stated in my previous stories, I lost a dear friend recently and needed time off from writing. It's good to be back. This chapter is just a warm up to the next few. I hope you enjoy
Disclaimer: I don't own Bones but need warmth so I would love being part of a DB and TJT sandwich
Sweets looked at the clock and saw it was three thirty. He wondered if Angela was going to show up.
He knew she had good intentions for everything she did. He knew how much she loved Brennan, but he had to agree with Booth that Angela's attitude the last several months has been extreme and become out of control. He went over in his head what he knew about her over the years. He had a theory, but he needed to talk to Angela first.
He was knocked out of his thoughts as his door was quickly opened, followed by Angela walking in and slamming it. She sat down on the chair across and threw her purse down.
Sweets saw that she was obviously crying. Moving quickly, he sat down across from her. "Can I get you anything? Water, soda, coffee?"
"N-No thank you"
"So Angela…how can I help you?"
Angela wiped her eyes before she stood up and walked to the window. "I want to know what's wrong with me. Why can't I love the people I love the most without hurting them?" She couldn't hold back the tears as they started to streak down her face yet again.
Hodgins was studying the evidence from the Howard Compton case. After a moment, he stopped what he was doing in frustration. He kept looking over at the entrance, hoping to see his wife come back. He didn't regret what he said to her, but wished it wasn't in anger.
He knew they should have talked about what happened years earlier, but it never seemed to be the right time. They were able to somewhat clear the air when they were in the jail cell before they got married, but some things were left unsaid. After a while, it didn't seem to be important and was easy to forget about.
Cam's words went through his mind. 'Whatever you and Dr. Brennan said to her pushed some buttons'
Hodgins was glad Angela took his advice, but also was afraid of what Dr. B told her. Tact was never her strong suit. Obviously what was said upset her enough to leave work to get away from everybody.
However, he knew that sometimes with Angela, she didn't listen to what someone was trying to tell her unless you beat her upside the head with it. He never wanted to see her cry, but also knew what he said, and what he suspected Dr. B told her should have been done a long time ago.
Hodgins checked his phone again, hoping that Angela responded to his text or called back without him knowing. When he didn't see anything from her, he checked his phone and saw it was set to vibrate. Frustrated at her lack of response, he watched the door again for a short time. After fruitlessly observing, he decided he wanted to know what his colleague said to her. He put down the tweezers he was holding and walked out of the Ookey Room.
Booth was walking to brainstorm with Sweets on a case when he saw a tear-streaked Angela get off the elevator and walk with purpose to Sweets' office. He stood there for a minute before curiosity got to him and walked down the hall. He got to Sweets' office, looked into the window, and was dumbfounded with what he saw.
Sweets was sitting in his regular chair while Angela got up from her chair, walked to the window, and seemed to be speaking before crying again.
Not wanting to spy on an obviously private moment, he walked back to his office. When he walked in, he saw his wife sitting in a chair looking quite pensive. "Bones? Are you all right?"
Brennan snapped out of her funk. "We found equine bones in Mr. Compton's remains, Booth"
"Equine? You mean there was a horse in him?" He meant to correct himself, but was interrupted by Brennan.
"Homo sapiens do not contain a horse, Booth. We found an equine bone with the remains. I'm fairly certain there was horse meat in that stew"
Booth followed the track his wife started. "Sorry…So Compton found out about it, was going to blow the whistle, and got stabbed with the marinade injector!"
"Booth I doubt Mr. Compton was going to just blow a whistle about this. He was probably going to contact the local health departments, the USDA…" Brennan saw Booth's face. "Too literal?"
"Yeah, Bones, but that's okay" He walked over and gave Brennan a hug, taking her by surprise.
"Booth, why are you hugging me?"
He stopped hugging his wife enough to look at her. "You looked like you needed it. What's wrong?"
Brennan didn't immediately respond. Booth knew from experience she needed time to process her thoughts and only needed to wait. He didn't need to wait long.
"Angela asked me why we weren't getting together like we did in the past. She asked if the reason was that you were having issues with her and not letting me go out with her"
'Uh Oh' Booth thought. 'That would explain Angela in Sweets' office.' "What did you tell her, Bones?"
"The truth. While partly because of the conflict you two were having, it was mostly because of the things she had said to me before and after the wedding. It just got to be too much"
'Of course Bones was honest. She could never be anything else but' Booth thought.
"I couldn't help it, Booth. She just kept pushing off my concerns and reasons, always trying to turn it back around to you. But it was her. To not be honest with her would be lying. I'm sorry if I upset her, but if I have to choose, I choose you Booth"
Guilt washed over him. "Bones, you don't have to choose—"
"Yes, I do, Booth. Until Angela jumps off her horse, I don't want to be around her"
"It's get off her high horse, Bones"
Before she could respond, Brennan's phone rang. "Brennan"
She listened for a moment. "Dr. Hodgins, what are you talking about?...Yes, I talked to her….what did I say? I told her that I didn't appreciate the way she has treated my husband and that I didn't want to be friends with someone who would be thoughtless about my feelings….I-I didn't know, Hodgins…well, if I see her I will let her know to contact you. Bye"
She hung up the phone. "That was Hodgins"
Booth saw his wife's face. "What's wrong, Bones? What did Hodgins want?"
"I guess he and Angela had a big fight during lunch, right before she came and talked to me. He asked Cam when he didn't find her and she said Angela left crying an hour ago and no one knows where she went"
Before Booth could open his mouth, Brennan directed her questioning to him. "Booth, why didn't you tell me about your argument with Angela during the Seidel case? She told me what she said to you and it must have been quite hurtful to you"
Booth hugged Brennan before releasing her and looked her in the eye. "It was Bones. She made me feel like I was like my father"
"Oh, Booth, I'm so—"
He held his hand up. "Let me finish, Bones. It felt like a slap in the face. I took her words to be a comparison to me and my father"
He was interrupted by Agent Shaw knocking on his office door. "Sir, the head of Tryon Foods is in Interrogation Three"
"Thank you, Agent Shaw" He turned to his wife. What he wanted to say would have to wait. "Ready?"
Brennan grabbed her crime scene kit. "I am. Let's get a killer, Booth"
