More questions and a tragedy.

The rest of the visit went smoothly. There were jokes and pie. Of course, the case still hung heavy in the air, but no one brought it up. Everyone was determined to focus on the company.
The only thing that was odd was that Rosaleen kept looking at her phone from time to time. The others would ask or comment on it, but she would just brush it off. Saying that it was just family stuff. The others didn't push it. Nick and Monroe would exchange looks from time to time, but knew that it would be smarter to let it go. Nick also pointed out that he could always find out who was calling her if it became too worrisome.
Hours later Monroe took Rosaleen home. Unlike everyone else, she seemed even more tense instead of less. Monroe had offered to be there for her if she needed to talk and she promised that she would take him up on that offer.
When she got into her house, she was exhausted. She decided to call her mother in the morning. It seemed that she was going through this every other year. She just hoped that this didn't mean that she would have to find a new place for her mother to live. She had already been nudged out of three hospitals for being difficult.
It seemed that the dream came out of nowhere. Later she wouldn't even be able to tell anyone when she fell asleep. One minute she was in her room and the next she was in her mother's room at Cedar Hills.
Her mother was in the middle of the room. Sitting in a wooden chair. She wasn't facing Rosaleen or the door, but something about the way she held herself gave the impression that she was aware of what was going on in the room. Rosaleen didn't know why she thought that because her mother looked the same. The stillness that was ever present with Eryl Deage unnerved people. In the dream, her mother's seemed to be made out of stone for all the movement she made.
She heard her mother speak in a hushed panic, "I'm so, so sorry. I tried my best, but they found me. There was so much I was supposed to tell you, but I couldn't. I wanted you to have a normal life for as long as you could. Instead, I might have made things worse. It never showed me this. At least, not clearly. Time is not as straight as everyone thinks. So many possibilities. I know that I'm not making sense now. Unfortunately, it will all become more clear soon enough. Remember that I love you and that you're stronger than you know. Goodbye, my sweet daughter and trust your guide when she shows."
Before Rosaleen could say anything, a shadow moved along the floor. Turning around, she saw a man in the doorway. She couldn't see him because of how dark the room was, but she had a feeling that he wasn't there to sell Girl Scout cookies.
She heard the man speak in a gruff voice as he walked towards her mother, "You knew I was coming?"
Her mother nodded, "Nothing gets past my kind. I am ready. Do not put it off. You wouldn't want to keep /HIM/ waiting. That would be….unpleasant for you."
With those words, the man wrapped his hands around Eryl's throat, while Rosaleen screamed at the figures that didn't seem to know that she was in the dream with them. Causing her to topple over into consciousness.
As she unwrapped herself from the tangle of sheets that seemed to be holding her down, she saw that her answering machine was flashing. She thought that was rather odd since everyone knew her cell number. She only kept the landline for backup and emergencies.
As she watched the red light flash, a feeling of dread filled her. She didn't know if it was because of the color or the fact that it was such an unusual sight. She mentally berated herself. It was probably just her mother again. Since she couldn't get Rosaleen to pick up on her cell, she probably tried on her home phone. If anything else could be said about her mother, she was a very determined woman. After talking herself down from the building panic, she took a breath and pushed the play button.
The voice of an older gentleman started to speak, "Hello. This message is for Rosaleen Deage. This is Dr. Matthew Rogers from Cedar Hills Hospital. I am sorry to say this, but something has happened to your mother. Could you please come as soon as possible? The police are here as per protocol. Thank you."
She looked at the answering machine in horror. Trying to process what she just heard. The doctor hadn't really said anything, but she just knew that her mother wasn't just hurt. There was a heavy weight pressing on her heart. It told her that her mother was dead.
The dream came rushing back to the forefront of her mind. Did she somehow witness her mother being killed? In the next moment, she brushed that thought away. The dream probably came because of all the times her mother called her that day. It had made her worry and it had made itself known in a disturbing dream. That's all it was. Just an active imagination. She repeated that to herself as she stumbled out of bed and got ready to face the worse day of her life.

Nick answered the call with a frown, "Please don't tell me that there's another body."
Hank sighed, "Nope. Well, at least not from our boy. It seems to be an apparent suicide at Cedar Hills. Caught it on the wire and called you. It wouldn't have been ours but I called in some favors because of the name. I figured that we would want to handle this."
Nick frowned, "Suicide? I would think they would get someone like Wu on that. What's so special about this one that you volunteered us for this?"
Hank paused before saying, "The vic is Eryl Deage. She was Rosaleen's mom. Seems that's who had been calling her all day yesterday. I know that I don't have your secret vibes but something about this seems off. I can't shake it. Could be wrong, but I thought, either way, Rosaleen would be glad that we were handling it. Did I assume too much or will I be picking you up in ten?"
Rubbing the bridge of his nose, "I'll be ready in five. Do you know if she has been notified yet?"
He could hear Hank shuffling some paper before saying, "They left a message that something happened and that she needed to get there as soon as possible. She won't know how bad it is until she gets there. So, I say that we hussle so she doesn't have to face this alone. Might want to call Monroe and give him a heads up."
Nick sighed, "Yeah. He's going to want to know about this. I'll call him. Just get over here so we can be there for her."

Rosaleen didn't know if she was scared or just in shock from the situation. She did know that if Dr. Rogers expressed his sympathy one more time, she might lose it. She understood that it was his job and he was worried how this would reflect on the hospital, but she wanted him to go away so she could start mourning her mother.
God! She still couldn't wrap her mind around it. In just a few days since she last saw her, her mother was gone. From what the doctor had told her, Eryl Deage had quietly hung herself in the middle of the night. There was something wrong about that, but she knew she couldn't protest it. Her mother was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. One that had resistance to treatment. She knew for a long time there would be no happy ending for her mother. Still, she didn't think it would end like this.
A quiet knock had her lookup. It was Nick and Hank. Both of them looked as though they wanted to be anywhere but here. She didn't blame them at all. She wanted to be far away from here as well. At least, she knew she wasn't going to be alone with this.
Dr. Rogers finally finished, "If you have any questions or need to talk, just give us a call. Again, I'm sorry for your lost."
Seeing Nick and Hank, he nodded, "Gentlemen! I will leave you. Take all the time you need."
The doctor moved quickly out of the room as if he wanted to get away from the situation. No one could blame him. This was just not going to get any better. Rosaleen was at a loss. Wanting more than anything to just go home and pretend that this wasn't happening. Be in denial for a bit longer.
Nick cleared his throat, "We can take you home if you're ready. Monroe said that you can also stay with him for a bit if you want. Whatever you want."
She closed her eyes at his words. Trying to keep the scream that was trying to escape. She knew that he was trying to help and be supportive, but all she wanted to do was lash out in the unfairness of it all. It wasn't his fault, but that gave her no comfort. She wished that she had answered her phone. Talked to her mother. Maybe it would have made a difference.
In a shaky voice, "It's so strange. This doesn't feel real at all. I keep expecting to wake up and find out that this is all a nightmare. That I can still call her and talk to her. Why didn't I just talk to her?"
Nick sat down in the chair next to her, resting his arms on his knees, "This isn't your fault. The doctor explained that she was getting worse. You can't question yourself. It's just going to drive you insane. The what ifs. The past is past. You can only move forward. Take the good memories and keep going."
She gave a bitter chuckle before saying, "I had a dream about her last night. Right here in this room. She told me that time wasn't linear. That there were so many possibilities. Ironic, huh?"
Nick looked down at his hands. Feeling at a loss. There didn't seem to be words that would fix this. Anything he said could make this worse and he didn't want to do that. He thought it was funny. There were creatures from fairy tales, but there didn't seem to be much in the way of magic. Not the kind that counted. At least, not to him.
Gathering his thoughts before he spoke, "You're not alone in this. Just remember. Come on. Monroe is waiting to hover over you until you throw a pillow at him."
There was a hint of a smile. It wasn't much, but it was something. Silently moving, they left the room. Rosaleen on paused for a moment to look around. Saying a wordless goodbye to her mother. Still, feeling a bit lost with all of this.
Nick glanced around and caught sight of the doctor out of the corner of his eye. The sight startled him. Causing him to still for a split second before he continued to move. Doing his best to act as though he didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
He was going to have to get Monroe alone and have a talk. Seems Eryl Deage's doctor was a Steinadler. It might be nothing, but he is 'special' vibes as Hank called them, told him that this was connected. That and the heaviness that settled into the pit of his stomach.
